Harrison: Broadband Speed More Than Sufficient to Satisfy Our Most Ambitious Plans for Google Stadia

Phil Harrison is confident that broadband speed is more than sufficient to satisfy the most ambitious Google Stadia plans in launch markets (US, Canada, UK, Europe).

I imagine even DSL upload will be enough since you're just really sending controller inputs back to the server. The data caps will be the real deciding factor.

Hell... this might even work over shotgun modems (56k x2) for 112k streaming action. I remember those days. Couldnt afford ISDN but I could link two phone lines together. And then doing ICS to another PC it was like butter.

The people this will cater to, have no idea what you just said.

^sad.... but true. The youth of today will never know the struggle.

Such a good call hahahahaha! I was thinking exactly the same thing. We’re dinosaurs now guys. At 39 I guess I’m ready for the retirement home lol. That gave me the laugh of the day.

i dont know, every demo had horrible input lag, i will wait and see if that improves

Marioraider181826d ago (Edited 1826d ago )

Its a bunch of bullsh**

I use Paperspace, which is the same thing. I get 300 mbps and low latency and yet the blacks in games are terrible. The fog in game disrupts the imaging. And then there is the input lag. You are literally just watching a video being streamed to you

2pacalypsenow1826d ago

Thats how it was when I used On Live, the microblocking was insane.

Fishy Fingers1826d ago

30 mb/s is the minimum requirement for 4k 60fps I believe. Only slightly higher than the UK (and USA) average and anyone looking at Stadia will no doubt already have a well beyond 'average' internet package. Here in the UK Virgins SLOWEST deal is 54+ mb/s for example and I dont think data caps even exist anymore.

codelyoko1826d ago

For that matter, they never even existed in most European Union.

ElementX1826d ago (Edited 1826d ago )

I get 300mbps fiber for $49.99 with no data cap and a two year guarantee of no price increase. I was paying $34.99 for 50mbps but that plan was discontinued. The US is a large country with the population spread out, if you live in a rural area streaming might not be feasible but if you live in a metropolitan area or suburb it might be a good option. I wouldn't go with Stadia, though.

fiveby91826d ago

I pay about the same for my fiber in the U.S. 300 Mb/s synchronous speeds and no data cap. I could get 1 Gb/s but for now 300 seems to be more than enough. But will I replace my PC and consoles with a Stadia type device? Not any time soon. Data caps are just the worst. I feel for anyone who has to deal with that.

ElementX1826d ago (Edited 1826d ago )

Anything over about 300mbps is overkill at this point. Steam downloads don't even come close, the most I've ever gotten is about 30. I don't stream 4k movies so I don't know the requirements for that.

rainslacker1826d ago

Biggest problem is, is that people with those high speed connections, don't usually get a sustained and stable bandwidth at that speed. It may appear so for a download, or buffered stream, but for a game where you need to see with relatively fast speed, it's going to show people the weaknesses of their internet, and it's something that everyone will deal with, because that's just how consumer level ISP's are.

Fishy Fingers1826d ago

And you're qualified to say that for hundreds of millions of internet users across the world based on? I expect Google can predict its viability some what more accurately.

I can only speak for myself, like you and mine is pretty rock solid.

I'm in no way for or against streaming platforms, I just find the whole 'internet speeds, data caps, stable bandwidth' pretty laughable in this day and age, there are more than enough people who dont suffer any of that and what you call "high speed" is basically standard, as I said 54+ mb/s starting package. It's not 2005 anymore.

rainslacker1825d ago

Based on my experience operating servers for companies webservices, and common sense. Bandwidth is measured in both theoretical limits, and averages. While one can maintain high bandwith quite often, it's certainly not uncommon for some packets to go slower, or your connection stop completely for a bit. Bandwith isn't stable unless you run your own ISP services and have direct connections to the backbones, and even then, you're often reliant on other connection hubs to maintain their connections. The consumer level ISP service is nowhere near as reliable in this regard.

You may experience what appears to be rock solid connections, and in this case, that likely will be more than enough for these kinds of streaming services, but if you really analyzed your packet deliveries, you'd probably notice the phenomenon that I describe.

I'm not against streaming platforms either. Just that it's not going to be a consistent experience across the board, even with those who have fast internet. My previous ISP had the speed, but they couldn't manage to have a lag free connection to save their life, even after repeated attempts working with them to fix it, going so far as explaining to their tech guys exactly what they needed to do to fix it. They just didn't really care, and once a new ISP opened up in my rural area, I hopped on it quick and got much better service. It's laggy at times, but overall, much more reliable.

Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors: "I deserve a lot of criticism."

Embracer CEO demonstrates a masterclass in mental gymnastics in latest interview.
"I'm sure I deserve a lot of criticism, but I don't think my team or companies deserve all the criticism. I could take a lot of that blame myself. But ultimately I need to believe in the mission," he said.
