Sony's Fate/Grand Order Hits $3 Billion in Global Player Spending

To put Fate/Grand Order’s success into perspective, that figure is the equivalent of a PlayStation 4 title selling 50 million copies at $60. It’s also five times what the most successful PS4 game to date, Horizon: Zero Dawn, would have grossed on its 10 million copies at full retail price.

All this accomplished by a free to play anime game.

Dem games as a service dollars raking it in big. No wonder everyone seems to be moving that way

AspiringProGenji1652d ago

this is a mobile game

Nice try MS investor

bluefox7551651d ago (Edited 1651d ago )

I'm confused, you seem to understand why it's bad, yet always defend it? Is the image of MS really that important in your eyes?

WelkinCole1652d ago

They look like Dockers icons to me lol

Kribwalker1651d ago

“this is a mobile game”

it’s a free mobile game, that has raked in as much money as HZD would have if it sold 50 million copies. You can’t tell me sonys not looking at that.

It shows, SP games don’t have as big of an impact, as this FTP GAAS online MMO game has made more than any SP game sony has released for the PS4.......chew on that

remixx1161651d ago (Edited 1651d ago )

Maybe you should chew on the fact that you don't seem to actually care about gaming and feel some odd ass form of satisfaction from predatory consumer practices. All if this to defend MS current direction.

You're like a super shill

The Wood1651d ago (Edited 1651d ago )

Bro. . .you're starting to sound like Phil. . .'impact' ms and Sony aren't equal. No matter how hard you try to 'me too' Sony into your gaas party it won't work. You're injecting a false equivalent like Sony can't dabble in other areas and simultaneously focus more on the games that have helped them destroy Microsoft this gen. Sony has the best balance. .Microsoft have failed this gen on many levels that count. These two players are only equal or on the same path in your mind. Taking one game and using it as the barometer for 'where we should go' is a quick way to shoot yourself in the foot. . Just ask MS lol

King_Noctis1651d ago

You are right. This is game as a service, or GaAS, but just in mobile form.

Legatus1651d ago (Edited 1651d ago )

"feel some odd ass form of satisfaction from predatory consumer practices. All if this to defend MS current direction."

I couldn't say it better myself. You know how much of a die hard fanboy you are when you are happy to pay full price for a bad, unfinished game that you will need to pay at least 3x the normal price to get full experience just because your favourite company is doing it. Phil should really consider to hire him, he would be a perfect company soldier.

Nyxus1651d ago

Because Phil is always right, also when he said Crackdown 3 was 'coming along nicely'.

CoinOrc1651d ago

Chew on the fact that MS can’t consistently make decent games, service games or otherwise. Crackdown 3, sea of thieves, state of decay, quantum break, etc. all suck.

these figures are depicting all that‘s wrong withe the industry today.

SuperSonic911652d ago

US$3 Billion?
Took Nintendo 2 years 2016 to 2018 to make that money

King_Noctis1651d ago

As always, where is your source?

bluefox7551651d ago

Even though one is kinda seeping into the other, I think it's important that we don't conflate phone gaming with console/PC gaming. There is some overlap, but they are massively different demographics.

tontontam01651d ago

Sadly, the investors are probably thinking why the hell are developers wasting their time making aaa games.

solideagle1652d ago

kudos to Sony but thats sad that a game needed to sell 50 million copies to earn same amount of money....wow Mobile is huge no matter from which angle we look at :)

SuperSonic911651d ago (Edited 1651d ago )

@solid
Like Guerilla Games said, for them to break even to sell twice their budget is already good.

USD$3 billion for a single game to make is too lofty a goal that no developer ever sanely hopes to make. Fate/Grand Order sales is considered a one in a million lucky phenomenon.

Lennoxb631651d ago

Its still way more common to reach goals like these with MP games than SP. Sure you got your huge SP franchises that do as well but that only happens about 3 or 4 times a gen. MP games don't even have to be established franchises to make this type of money.

FallenAngel19841652d ago

“It’s also five times what the most successful PS4 game to date, Horizon: Zero Dawn,”

I’m certain that Uncharted 4, God of War 4 & Spider-Man sold more than Horizon: Zero Dawn

mandf1652d ago

Fallenangel

I'm not going to disagree but I would like to know the exact stats just out of curiosity.

ORyanDeee1652d ago

google is your friend my dude

mandf1652d ago

Just asking fallen a question. I not trying to be disrespectful or saying I know.

Italiano12345671652d ago

They did but most members of the video game media have no idea what there talking about. Ign is a great example.

bluefox7551651d ago (Edited 1651d ago )

It's not just gaming media, "journalism" has become a joke these days. It seems like most can't be bothered to even do 5 minutes of google searching before writing an article.

conanlifts1652d ago

I don't see it being accurate but vgchartz has hzd at 5.84, god of war just over 6 million and Spider-Man and uncharted around 10 million.

The figures for GOW seem too low though as it sold over 3 million in the first few days.
