ONM: Quantum Of Solace Wii Review

ONM writes: "'The best Bond title since Goldeneye', they said; 'You'll be blown away by how much better it is than the last few games,' they said. Granted, the fact that 'they' were all people who had a vested interest in the game doing well should have had our alarm bells going crazy way in advance. However, the idea of Quantum Of Solace being the best Bond game since Goldeneye is fairly true. It's just that it achieves that accolade by virtue of only being 'mostly bad' as opposed to 'utterly rubbish' like the other games were.

Admittedly, 'mostly bad' doesn't mean completely bad. But extolling the game's few redeeming features - the close combat system, the ability to blind fire without exposing yourself from cover, the way enemies react when you shoot different body parts - doesn't prevent the negatives far outweighing the positives. Fact is, having uttered more expletives at Quantum Of Solace than at any other game in recent months (moreso than Mega Man 9, even), we assure you it's a frustrating experience. And sadly, that frustration is a cumulative effect from a number of particularly annoying problems."

ouch...... I love 007 games too and yea they have completely fallen off since 007 NightFire. Nightfire best 007 to date and might be last good 1 too...

heyheyhey5648d ago

Nightfire was awesome!!!

but Everything or Nothing and FRWL were enjoyable bond rentals too..

Wii is a sad joke.. How do you make a console then let a game like this out.. Goldeneye looks better than this.. and it came out N64

funny, yet sad because its true :D

"Visual textures on the walls and floor are a blurry mess when you get close and the framerate is, for the most part, atrocious. Explosion effects are pitiful; someone bursting a paper bag behind you would have more effect than the pathetic flame effects and complete lack of noise shown here."

"The muddy visuals also make combat difficult, as enemies more than a few feet away have a habit of blending into the background - you'll often only spot them when the lock-on markers will pop up or you see the red light from their sniping scopes."

Here is my favorite part since I was disagreeing with some geniuses the other day that were saying how superior the Wii control mechanism is.

"And sadly, even the controls have their own niggling problems. The dash-and-cover ability is nice, but becomes an annoyance when it results in you taking cover behind anything you happen to accidentally bump into while dashing. Jumping over obstacles is incredibly selective (some low walls you can, some you can't despite them looking identical) and you can't do it while in cover; you have to back off and leave yourself exposed before being given the option.

Using the Wii Zapper makes some of the controls incredibly awkward, because the buttons are on top of the Wii Remote out of reach. And overall, they just feel either too sensitive or too sluggish depending on the setting you choose - the Custom option helps, but even then it's hard to find the sweet spot."

Did I mention the game is ugly on the Wii?

Looks like they managed to duplicate Goldeneye in one respect. Remember, if your game sucks and only the control mechanism makes the game interesting then the game still sucks. In this case even the controls are horrendous. I am glad I paid for this on an actual next gen platform.

I dont have the energy to read all that but its probably a well thought out comment so have a bubble for the effort :P

what me and others were saying is if a game is made correctly the controls for the wii are awesome for fps's. you use this game to fuel your fanboy BS, why dont you use metroid, or another game where the wii controls were great. bet you wont use the conduit neither when it comes out. lmao at you pointing out frame rate issues with this game, when i dunno how many ps3 games have horrible frame rate issues, orange box, f.e.a.r, fallout3, shoot too many to list, and dont you consider ps3 a next-gen console?..... go home morgan, or better yet play ya ps3, instead of using it for a web browser like 98% of the sony fanboys do. oh and by the way i wanna know when nintendo said that wii was going to be a next-gen console, cause i sure dont remember that news.....

morganfell5648d ago

nos4speed, much appreciated. Right back at you.

Maxned5648d ago

YOU HAVE NEVER EVEN PLAYED A WII SHOOTER.

Maybe you could have gone to a friends house to play. Oh wait. You have none.

Wii shooters are far-better controlled than dual-stick.

AND GTFO OUT OF WII NEWS. NO ONE WANTS YOU HERE, PS3-SLAVE.

morganfell5648d ago (Edited 5648d ago )

Open Zone is that way ===> or didn't your read the forum rules. Yes I have a Wii, plenty of people here have seen pics of my rigs. You just can't stand the fact the Wii is not a real game machine. Hurts doesn't it. If a Bond game doesn't work on the controller then a more serious shooter would just be crap. Stick to Mario.

PS, I love the PM you sent pleading me not to come into a Wii thread and how the Nintendo fans just wanted to be left alone. Yet there you were attacking SOCOM in a PS3 thread. Tsk Tsk my boy...

Is still the only bond game i've been able to enjoy, imo that game revolutionised multiplayer gaming.

One of the things these developers seem to want to do is overly emphasize "Bond moments". They last thing I want to do is bust through a skylight and hear a quick snippet of the Monty Norman theme while a rotating golden 007 emblem comes at me.

Until they get their head out of their rear end, cut down on the linearity, and make the game truly gritty and realistic they will never hit the mark. What made Casino Royale great - besides a new Bond? Going away from the camp and wading knee deep in grit.

Even Goldeneye is overly praised. I still have it sitting here plugged into an N64. There are too many instances of body armor sitting everywhere items and such along the same line jsut lying around.

As soon as I heard Treyarch had this game I asked myself what the hell Activision was thinking. You finally get the Bond license and you give it to Treyarch? When you are in the Superbowl and you finally get your first possession of the ball do you run the initial offensive play and hand the ball off to the waterboy?

Where Have All the Bond Games Gone?

Everyone’s been thinking about James Bond lately, with the franchise’s latest cinematic release tantalisingly close yet pushed back by the pandemic. It serves as a reminder of the wider obstacles faced by this particular franchise—one that can be nimble, competitive, and invigorating—but yet is a behemoth always struggling against the weight of its reputation in a changing creative landscape. The video games inspired by these films are a particular testament to those difficulties, considering their trajectory: an early enormous success in GoldenEye, through weakly received adaptations and original stories, to a near-decade of non-existence.

I paid a few quid for a copy and I enjoyed it.

Articuno763638d ago

You should try Blood Stone if you haven't already. It's going for the same price as Quantum but I reckon it's a better game all round.

jontrueno3638d ago

I actually enjoyed the game. The scenery was really good and varied. It wasnt the best shooter ever, but it was certainly worth playing if you like the bond franchise at all. Bloodstone was good to, just different.
