Resident Evil 2 looks scary, but it’s sound that makes the game blood-curdling

DT writes: "I spoke with Resident Evil 2 audio director Kentaro Nakashima about the process of creating sounds for the remake. Nakashima’s insightful responses are sure to please longtime Resident Evil fans, as well as those curious about what goes into designing audio for video games."

There is a massive difference in the level of ambient 3D sound when I have my headphones on and when the sound output through the TV. Literally with headphones on it is a very different and terrifying experience.

It's a shame because the original Resident Evil 2 sounds from the PS1 are even better and make the game feel more tense. I don't know why they didn't just update and remaster the original songs.

MONOLITHICIDE1914d ago

Fresh new experience to be had and probably to have you buy it.

DVAcme1914d ago

As classic as the old soundtrack is, it's a product of its time, and the new soundtrack is more appropriate to the new game. It's much more atmospheric and uses the different channels better to create mood. Not only that, the old tracks are much shorter, so they can become repetitive. The tense track that plays when the zombies break through the door in the shed under the balcony becomes annoying REAL fast.

nucky641914d ago

man, no sounds from the original re2 come close to those lady zombies screams from the remake.

-Foxtrot1913d ago

Well I’m playing it with the original soundtrack changeover and it sounds fantastic

ScootaKuH1913d ago

I know it's not 100% ideal but there is some DLC that reinstates the original audio (The music and menu sounds, not the zombies). I'm playing with the original audio on my second play through and it helps bring back some of those old memories 😎

-Foxtrot1913d ago

That’s what I’m talking about...the DLC OST

Would have liked all zombies to look different. The sounds and surroundings were excellent

DVAcme1914d ago

If you're using headphones, that THUMP THUMP THUMP of Mister X walking down the halls looking for you is MADDENING. In this game, he's scarier than Nemesis and even friggin' Pyramid Head. If they remake Nemesis to the leveo of this game, it'll be pants-pissingly terrifying, I really hope the rumors that they're working on that one are true.

nucky641914d ago

those shrieks the lady zombies make are wild. and if you don't see them and hear them scream - it's chilling!

Oh great, now we have to deal with Anasts Bethesda fetish indefinitely.

Thanks a lot, Todd

You're welcome for the free entertainment. Usually, it comes at a cost of $70 because of inflation.

Crows9011h ago

That's an inflated price...

@Crows

It would be if it weren't a valuable resource.

"with no plans to retire anytime soon" I mean this is like a common news topic involving his name. Knock it off and do some actual newsing. This is like the biggest "No Duh" article of the day, and several sites had to regurgitate it. Geez. So lame.

This is when he'll retire.

He doesn't have to retire, just the stupid outdated garbage creation engine.

Netimmerse 4.0, presumably 5.0 for TES6. They should give the Fallout IP to Obsidian, and have it made in UE5.
