Sony UK boss on DLC: 'Nothing is ever exclusive'

Sony Computer Entertainment UK managing director Ray Maguire has told VideoGamer.com that "nothing is ever exclusive" in response to questions surrounding exclusive DLC on Microsoft's Xbox 360.

@1.7 - wtf is wrong with you, 1.5 is telling the truth. MS had a 2 game deal with Epic for Gears of War, meaning Gears of War 3 is open for a platform at the moment. So it could end up being Multi-platform, but I really really doubt it would be exclusive to PS3 (because Sony doesn't have enough money to pay for that, especially when they are concentrating on their own studios)

It's a business bud, you have to balance the risk taking with the bill paying.

The devs have still got to pay their workers who have to pay their nannies, so whilst they may have some fresh IP in the cooker it's a good idea to put some DLC out to get in some added liquidity.

Plus, if you were in tech you'd know this, you never toss away a good piece of architecture. Liberty City shouldn't be left as it is, it's a locale for a lot of possible stuff. It's there, use it - like Paradise city has.

but my point goes to more about what is third party DLC and what is platform specific.

halo, gears of war etc are published and owned by microsoft.

god of war, gran turismo, littlebigplanet are owned by sony.

bioshock, gta, tomb raider is owned by the third party.

the debate here is about third party content. microsoft told us that they were exclusive to bioshock. turns out that is not true. sony has exclusive dlc to bioshock. we know that is not true and that microsoft may see that same exclusive content.

the difference in microsoft is they take their "me first" a bit further by adding an NDA regarding said time limits. such as bioshock and if gta4 dlc is a timed release. microsoft paid not only to get it first but to shut take two/rockstar up about said timed exclusivity.

Yeah, even though the majority of games have gone multi., I think that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 will ALWAYS have a few 3rd party exclusives here and there.

Quantum Theory and Wardevil are 2 other 3rd party PS3 exclusives coming 2009, and Sony didn't pay a dime for them. Since Sony didn't pay anything for them to stay exclusive, I'm pretty confident that those 2 games will stay exclusive.

there are some exemptions i would say..

for instance.. some companies like valve just prefer to work on the 360 cause its like the pc to make. as a whole the company may be rethinking their strategy.. but gabe, a developer, has a personal preference.

same can be said for a few ps3 titles. while kojima plans on making future games on both consoles big ambitious titles may be ps3 only or xbox 720 and ps3 due to what you can squeeze with hard drives, blu ray, and use of spu's

then there is the other guy. the guy that still makes ps2 games and probably cant afford to make ps3 and/or 360 games. they may pick a platform and stick to it cause they dont have the man power or finances to do double the work. and dont want to be published by a bigger name because they want to own their IP.

First off be real. Games like LBP and God of War are owned by Sony and therefore won't ever be multiplat, some people do not get that. I do not know if Sony owns Media Molecule but they likely own the LBP name. Same goes with Halo (name owned by MS) and Fable (name owned by MS and Lionhead is owned by MS).

But this is about DLC. Again the exclusivity here is timed at best. Bioshock PS3 content will hit XBL in 09 as will Fallout 3 DLC and likely GTAIV DLC.

Why? More platforms = more buyers = more money. Simple.

According to Wikipedia(so not definite but likely) MM was formed by people who left Lionhead. I didn't know that! I wonder if Sony owns the LBP property though. Now I am curious.

Lots of games are losing their exclusivity simply because Sony is not as dominant as last generation. Only reason for a 3rd party PS3 exclusive now is if the dev wants to take advantage of the architecture.

Having said that I notice how many people talk about games coming to the 360 but how about Saints Row 2? That was a 360 exclusive that they have lost? Pretty big one if you ask me. I mean if you are going to throw Tekken in then we should make note that the 360 is losing exclusives as well. The only difference is that they just don't have as many to start with.

Now Halo "4", thats something thats "exclusive" and would be a "smack-in-the-face" to 360 fanboys. 360 has plenty of exclusives that matter, and so far, none of them have become multiplatform. Besides, more than likely(based on history) the multiplatform games will look better on 360---and that still give those 360 kids some bragging rights.

Maybe in theory this is true that Microsoft's exclusive DLC is only exclusive for a certain ammount of time, but because the wait is so long even for MS to recieve the content I'm almost positive that a game company wouldn't waste time trying to support whatever the game in question is once the exclusivity window has passed. Usually those windows are 6 months to a year and it could be months before the content is released for 360 (GTAiv). And who will care about DLC of a game that could be 2 years old at that point? Move on, nothing to see here.

Personally, I'm not sure if MS would be able to do anymore buying up the competition's chances right now, because:

1. We're pretty sure their money is starting to run a little dry. They had to close Ensemble Studios and freeze hiring to get the TR:UW DLC and Tekken 6 (let's not forget about this recent economic situation that is hurting EVERYONE'S bottom line). What else are they willing to cut back on just so they can screw with Sony more?
2. People are really starting to catch on to this MS buying up everything strategy, so much so that some mainstream gaming media people are saying something about it and that Sony is really turning up the vocalization of the practice (from this alone). This means that the people will also know about the type of contracts that MS would like for these third parties to get into, plus, as I've said time and time again about GTA4, MS will never shut up about their "exclusives" when they really know nothing about what they really bought (always trying to say that something will come out right now and exaggerate about what they actually bought).

Of course, they always have their loyal fanboys to try to spread the fabrication and spin things however they can (who can never see MS doing anything wrong and use whatever they can in order to justify something MS is doing to win this generation).

2K Games spent alot of money to add new content and port this game, and the paltry sales on the PS3 will make many of them reconsider the benefit of porting stuff.
