I'll be buying the next Xbox, PS5 & Nintendo's next console & handhelds as well.

I like games and to get as wide of an experience as possible I prefer to play what I like and that means I'd need all 3 consoles.

I don't get the console wars or fanboy syndrome.

Microsoft does need to step it up next gen but I believe they will. They get to build it they way they want now with all this past gens mistakes in mind.

Phil Spencer's first true consoles where he is in charge during it's development and initial release.

I'm still enjoying this gen and some past gen games but I'm always excited for the next gen.

you know what's funny? the n64 barely had any games outside of it's own exclusives and even those were few and far between, yet it's still heralded as a great console by most. the difference? there was no internet to complain on....as far as xbox goes, no matter what they do there will always be wrong in the eyes of these sony folks....if they don't bring a game to pc, you have pc players complaining, if they do, then you have console players complaining (mostly sony folks). you just can't please everyone.

Before you leap to conclusions I’m not one of these “Sony folk” you talk of I’m a gamer I own a 360 (currently in its box) had a xbox1S sold it after 4 months yes I have a PS4 pro and a vita but I also own a switch Wii U and a 3DS if a console has its own great games worthwhile me purchasing a console I’ll do it.
Xbox one has been dire all Gen and since I sold it well over a year ago apart from another forza admittedly a pretty good one but other than that nothing and for the next year it’s pretty much crackdown yea pass on that. Microsoft has already been venturing into VR and AR. They have been maturing their own Windows Mixed Reality Platform for over a year now. I assume these very games (with Xbox support) will be available once they bring it to their console.

Before Game Pass came around there was no need for a PC gamer to own an Xbox One. All MS first party is on Windows 10 going forward so Xbox One would be redundant hardware for an PC gamer. But now I could see a PC gamer buying Xbox One for the selection of games available on Game Pass. Or to take advantage of Play Anywhere if there were a need for a gaming console in another room or there may be some indie games that are on Xbox One but not PC, etc. It would have to be some specific reason, but for the most part if you have a Windows 10 gaming PC then you can play pretty much anything available on Xbox.

Personally, I'm quite happy as a Windows 10 gamer so I don't expect investing in Xbox hardware anytime soon.

Why not have that synergy between both PC and console in the home? Buy once, play anywhere...it beats buying for either console or PC right?

Cross-buy, cross-save, cross-play (play anywhere). This is what I like personally. My console sits in the livingroom where I like to lounge, and my PC is in my office, where I prefer to use Mouse & Keyboard. It's the best of both worlds in one ecosystem, although, you also have Steam, Origin and other services, so the PC ends up still being a unique experience.

1. Steam link? Ok...how many different screens can one PC distribute to using Steam Link? In other words...if I live in a home with 2 adults and 4 kids...can we all be playing different games, off that one PC using Steam Link? How will that effect performance?

2. Getting a really long cable? You mean cables right because again, I'm talking about gaming for multiple people throughout the home to multiple rooms while different people play different games.

3. Building a cheap HTPC? With that solution you are diving head first into console territory. That's exactly what consoles are haha...cheap HTPCs. Lets just say a house hold can get an HTPC built for $500 a piece...well Microsoft is making diskless consoles for a cheaper price point that will be capable of playing games at the same level (higher in some cases) as a cheap HTPC...and be even cheaper in price while doing it.

But in my scenario, gamers would still maintain those digital play anywhere titles where one could play them on the really expensive desktop, and while through family share, could also allow everyone in the home to play different games at the same time, which was my original point. The synergy between Xbox and Windows 10 is already way more powerful than trying to figure out what games to buy for what platforms. They presumably would both play each others games and could be distributed throughout the home each picking which platform works best for them.

I have a 9 year old daughter...Im sorry, but shes getting a console in her room, not an HTPC haha...I, nor she will want to have to deal with that. Sure...ill take the insanely speced PC, but not for her...but by have one eco system, we can both play games at the same time, but I only had to buy those games once...

haven’t wasted my money on a pro because i hardly turn my PS4 on in the first place (haven’t since god of war), so i’m not that overly concerned about that. I’ll stick with the OneX for the high quality games and when Sony eventually drops the price of the Pro down i might buy one, but it’s not worth it for the 3-4 games i might play on it any given year.

Actually I said I played Nier: Automata, specifically, on PS4 because I thought it might be fun to try and get the Platinum and the PC support for the game was horrible. But yes, on a rare occasion I could see myself playing another multiplat on PS4 Pro to get another plat. That is quite different from streaming a game on PS Now which I would never do. stooping low? I have a PS4. I’m not streaming anything on PSnow. But i’m using it as an option against thunder cats thoughts on missing all the PS4 exclusives if you went PC and Xbox.
With sony releasing exclusives on PSnow, and if they want to keep expanding their service, it will start happening more and more, then you wouldn’t miss out on those games because you have the option to stream the games.

I respect the ability to play games elsewhere, but it seems like an expensive and limiting option to consider this the best set up. No problem if a person feels that way, but for the money, the PC, and any other system, is likely going to offer more. Some concessions may have to be made if one wants to play in multiple rooms, but I feel the added available content makes up for it.

It was short lived, maybe a couple months, but Halolens AR was used to try and quell the PSVR hype that Sony was having after the year of the staged Minecraft demo. MSVR was hyped up when MS said the X1X would have it the following year. It was also pretty short lived, when Spencer later said that it wasn't going to happen, because the market wasn't there yet. Maybe I have those two events mixed up in years, but they both certainly happened.

Basically, MS spent two years, promoting something to combat PSVR, which they either didn't have for the market(Halolens), or didn't really seem that interested in in the first place(3rd party VR support).

If you'd like, I could restate some of the bold claims from Xbox fans about why MS was the choice for this stuff, or why AR was better....just let me know.

It was? Didn't know that the E3 press conference showing minecraft was a business related conference. Is E3 not about electronic ENTERTAINMENT? The name would suggest that.

Didn't know that Hololens releasing a publicly available dev kit with gaming API's was a business related venture. Didn't know that all those talks where Phil mentioned how AR was better than VR for GAMES, was due to it being featured for business. Didn't realize that anything Spencer said would be them aiming it at business....he was the head of Xbox....a consumer level product.

Even if MS primary focus for the device is business right now, they certainly had no qualms promoting hololens as something significant for Xbox. Which it most certainly isn't. And this was before their bigger push to merge Windows and Xbox, so you can't say that was about the Xbox platform, not the console.

That's the very definition of a multiplat dev, as their games have literally been on every relevant platform that could run them. I think they're six feet under and not coming back, but if anyone is to buy them out and revive them it should be a third party company. Letting a console manufacturer buy them out would just delay their already apparent death, and probably not by much. In any case, I'd love for them to return and make a second season of The Wolf Among Us, but I've made my peace that the last few episodes of The Walking Dead The Final Season will be their swan song. Maybe Robert Kirkman will consider buying them out after Skybound helps them finish their series based on his franchise, but he's under no obligation to do so.

They don't really have much of value considering most of their games aren't their own IP. Buying them up to make them exclusive to MS platforms also means cutting their potential revenue quite a bit. It'd be easier and likely cheaper, for MS to just make it's own studio to make a similar game, maybe hire a few people like writers or designers from the studio, or find others in the industry who can do it.

I'm afraid there is really no way that TT is going to survive. Their parent company may sell off what IP's they do have, but ultimately, the studio is now defunct.

no, they said it CAN run vr just fine if they wanted to implement vr into it. at this late in the game, why would they put their efforts into it instead of the next xbox? the only reason vr has had a surge these last few months is simply because of the massive price drops across the board on pc and on playstation.because it just wasn't selling enough at 5-$600 when they came out...not to mention that a lot of people find it cumbersome with all the extra wiring across the floor. personally, the day i invest in vr will be when the headsets are smaller, cheaper, and wireless which won't be for several more years....(maybe sooner after CES '19)

That's only good news if they actually intend to use these studios for more than one game, the quality of that studio's output doesn't drop, and the studio isn't completely forgotten about in the near future only to be quietly closed. What I'm saying is, I'm not sure why MS needs to go on such a shopping spree when they already have studios they could actually be using, but for whatever reason continue to choose not to, assuming they haven't outright dumped them.

It's not always easy to just expand a studio to accomadate a 2nd team. Even Sony can take time to get games from 2nd teams released...as evidenced by some of their studios which added 2nd teams. Sometimes, it's just quicker to buy up a studio which is already operating. In the case of some of those studios, it also means gaining some intellectual property that may be of interest to them. for instance, if PlayGround is working on a RPG, that isn't Fable, and PG say they're interested in going multi-plat, but MS really wants that game, or doesn't want PG to make games for the competition, then it's beneficial to them on multiple levels.

Lot of scenarios where it's good to buy an established studio. On top of that, I question who outside their studios may actually have good game ideas they can bring to fruition. If you look at Xbox as a whole, most of their new IP's come from the outside, which they then buy up to make them their own. MS doesn't have a great history of being the creator of really big franchises. they are known to support some, but that's a different matter.

What's all this nonsense about a second team? All these studios need is one team to produce something. A second team would let them tackle more projects, but these studios clearly don't even have a first team working on something. Expansion is something to do when they're already operating on all cylinders, but they're clearly not even doing that.

You're right about MS not having much history with creating big franchises, but that's their own bloody fault.
Sure, they can buy all the studios they want, but if they just get used for one game before their staff are laid off that's not much good. Sony can buy up studios too, but they don't go on big buying sprees because they actually do use the ones they have, and if they do buy a studio you can bet it would get some use. If MS used their studios too, they would be bringing the competition right now and may have been in the running for first place instead of hoping to hold onto second place with Nintendo rapidly closing in on them. The whole point of buying a studio and not just an IP is for there to be more exclusive IPs in the future. MS clearly doesn't get that though, so they have to repeatedly open their wallets, and time will tell how far that gets them.

Their current studios are already producing games. Not sure how many studios you think MS had before, but most of them aren't full fledged studios. A lot of MS content they've release has actually been contracted out to 3rd party studios.

I assumed you were talking about MS establishing 2nd teams within those studios, because there is nothing that would increase their game output, if they just moved those studios onto other projects.

The rest of your reply seems to imply you think I'm defending MS here. I'm not really. It is MS fault for not creating more. I was just pointing out that there may not be the right people in MS as a whole that are capable of creating, or starting the development of such games. This is backed up by the fact that they haven't done much of that, and all of their current big franchises are the brain child of other people or companies. Rare has some new stuff they came up with, but that's the only in house studio which has produced significant IP's for MS.

Microsoft better have greater 3rd party support next gen from Asia. This gen was horrible for Xbox Japan support compared to the 360 and OG Xbox years. They need more studios outside of America.

I really hope that Microsoft gets their act together with their First party titles. There were barely any games specifically for the one. I hope this year is better for 1st party titles.

They stated before that VR is “not ready” for prime time. They will jump into it once the tech matures.

Well they have to if they want to keep people subbed for more than a month at a time. They need 3 big games a year and at least 6 small to medium ones to make people stay with gamepass. Gamepass with day 1 games can only be profitable if people stay subbed.

It is little stupid that their games will not be available on steam. I doubt they can compete with Sony or Nintendo games but they must release their console first to have head start like 360 and it must be affordable.

its a nod in the right direction i dont think they will compete with sony on exclusive software but should be better than last gen. TBH if you have a Pc you may aswell stick with the xbox app now
