Gamespot: PS3 Fallout 3 Review

It's a shame, in light of these impressive design elements, that the PlayStation 3 version is shockingly inferior to the others from a technical perspective. However, no matter what platform you own, you should play Fallout 3, which overcomes its issues by offering a deep and involving journey through a world that's hard to forget.

This morning I intended to buy the following games.
LBP (TRIPLE A+, NEXT GEN GAMING, REVOLUTIONARY AND ORIGINAL - no brainer here. Those who do not own LBP this Xmas, is fked).

r2 (Triple A+, shooter of the year).
COD World at war (incredibly solid shooter, youre getting COD3 + left 4 dead in one package. No brainer here).

Valkyria Chronicles (no brainer - best next gen strategy rpg)
SOCOM (solid shooter for 10 bucks but mostly for the HQ headset).

Fallout 3. Now after knowing that PS3 version is less than 360, I drop fallout 3 from my list.

Its no biggie, bethesa. You just saved my wallet 60 bucks rofl.

And guys, try not to be that hard on bethesa. They thought they would win by supporting the 3rd60...but their game got leaked weeks before release already rofl. They have income leak from all sides right now. From gamer deciding not to purchase the PS3 version and 3rd60 versions being pirated on the net.

In the end, I dont give a fk. This holiday season is LOADED with good games. One more or less dont make any difference. The 60 bucks I saved up now, is better spend on Mirrors edge for example.

im pretty sure its not as bad as they make it seem...im actually going to pick up my copy in a few minutes but right after its right back to work unfortunately lol...i do have both a 360 and ps3 but i still choose to pick up the ps3 version as i prefer playing all my games both multiplatform and exclusive on it and leaving my 360 for the exclusive games only...well the good ones at least...either way im sure bethesda will patch the ps3 version to fix up some of the issues

@theExecutive - It had to be a 0.5 reduction because Gamespot changed their grading scheme a while back to only do 0.5 increments - so even if it only deserved 1 point knocking off (so it was 8.9) they have to put it down to 8.5 because they can't do it any higher than that.

Stupid really, this game is great though, buy it on whatever platform you can

Is a joke. Has anyone else noticed that when gamepsot scores a multiplat on the PS3 regardless of what the world + dog is scoring it they are generally always .5 if not more lower? It's one thing to score a bad game badly. But the folks at gamespot are just ridiculous.

It's funny, because everyone knows they so desperately wanted to give MGS4 a lower score as well, but they figured if they give it a ten, it would absolve them of past fallacies and allow them to down-rank games from now on (LBP is one...read the review, they basically call it a novel experience as if it's nothing special), and if anyone says anything they will say "didn't you see the 10 we gave MGS4."

I agree the R&C and Uncharted reviews says it all about gamespot , The PS3 version dosn't derserve to be scored .5 below the 360 bcuz of a few techincal probs which I hear doesn't really affect the gameplay in anyway but then again it's still a good score and im a little dissapointed that Devs are still screwing the PS3 over even though the PS3 is the #1 most profitable consoles for 3rd parties..

im sure POG/The Mart will be happy to see this in the wake of all the great scores PS3 exclusives has been getting

I tried checking for Midnight Club: Los Angeles yesterday at gamestop.com and they only show the Xbox 360 version LOL they dont even mention the PS3 version, the only clue to the PS3 version being made is the Strategy guide that says, PS3 Xbox 360, PC hahaha..........

One thing some people should keep in mind while getting mad at Gamespot for taking a whole .5 points off the game is, Gamespot grades on a .5 scale.

Grading on a scale varying by .1 requires a little extra thought, and while some sites/mags grade on the .5 scale that are credible, Gamespot is no such thing and put so little effort into their reviews, the .5 system was the way to go.

I have a gaming PC and a PS3, I'm really starting to go towards getting the Collectors Edition for the PC, since i could hook it up to my 52" tv and play the same way i would with my PS3, i just want to know if there is anything going to be released for the PS3 that is not coming to the PC? Or should i go to hell with it and just get the PC version?

EDIT: And i could play with everything maxed on the PC so what should it be?

id say pc version. pc is probably gonna get dlc, and you can probably get it for free. in fact, you can probably get the pc version for free if you look hard enough... plus it was stated that the pc version is the most superior version to all, provided you have a computer that can handle it. wasnt sure if mine could, im still running a geforce 7900gs and 2gb of ram; i need to upgrade soon. lol

I love those who question the fact that the PS3 version of Fallout 3 is significantly inferior assert that Gamespot can't be trusted. How many of you know that IGN said the very same thing. Specifically, IGN writes that the PS3 version looks "worse than 360 with some aliasing issues and lesser texture quality." The Official PS3 Magazine said the same thing. The simple fact of the matter is that, if you want to play the best version of multiplatform releases, 99% of the time, you really need an Xbox 360. PS3 has some good first party products, as does Xbox 360. No question about it. But when it comes to multiplatform releases, which are 94.8% of the game releases on these systems, Xbox 360 is the preferred choice.

As noted, the blurring issue you talk about is just one of many problems. Again, IGN itself noted that the PS3 version was "worse than 360 with some aliasing issues and lesser texture quality." The problems with the PS3 version is broader than you make them out to be.

Do people really believe that a developer would intentionally produce a dumbed down version of a game for a console? Are people really that dumb, or is that just a joke. I have to assume it's the latter, as I find it hard to believe people really are that poorly educated here. As everyone should know by now, there are significant difficulties developing games for the PS3. If one spends a significant amount of money and resources optimizing a game for the PS3, they can get a good product, just as they do with the Xbox 360. In reality, developers arn't going to spend those kind of resources necessary for even of modest improvement. For better or for worse, a developer of a multiplatform title can't justify spending twice as much to develop a PS3 version as they spend developing the Xbox 360 version. The market economics simply would not justify it. You can blame the developers all you want, but if you were in their shoes, putting fanboyism aside, you'd be doing the same thing.

I know that makes xbox fans happy but soon the tables will turn once alone in the dark is released

I would say that 99% of the gamers in the world would in fact not agree with you that Bethesda intentionally made an inferior version of their product. They did the best they could with the hardware and time and budget contraints. If you have to blame some, blame Sony, who chose to put a product on the market that, by all accounts (even Sony's), is notoriously difficult to develop for. Finally, I can't avoid making note of your comment that the truth will be revealed when Alone In The Dark gets released for the PS3. Alone in the Dark has a Metacritic rating 55 (PC) and 58 (Xbox 360). If this is the game you're hanging your hat on, you're in for some serious disappointment.

for the record, bioshock plays much better on ps3 than on xbox, its been said in almost every review. the only gripe they had was that it didnt BLOW the xbox version out of the water, due to lazy developers.

the discrepancy between the xbox version and ps3 version of fallout is also not as big as xbox fanboys would like you to believe, as stated by MUCH more credible sources than gamespot, which everyone knows is in m$'s pockets. now im not saying that the ps3 of fallout is better, and rightfully so, because it was not the lead platform. however, to say that it is MUCH better on xbox is ridiculous and obviously propaganda that GS is spreading.

on a final note, as the market between the two consoles levels out, and it is almost there, there are obviously going to be more evenly distributed 3rd party titles with either of the consoles as the lead platform, so things will change soon.

trust me, Metal Gear Solid 4 is very very good and it really has more gamplay than Gears (just for example, Gears is a great game, too). it's a shame that everyone who hasn't played the game says that it's 100% cutscenes just because it has a lot of them.

when your LBP PS3 arrives give this game a try, even if you didn't like MGS's gameplay in the past. the story is fantastic and the graphics and gameplay elements are some of the best this gen. no fanboy talk, it's really good.

i know what you're talking about when you say that the 360 is the 1st choice when it comes to games. multiplatform titles perform better and the multiplayer features are superior but the PS3 has also some great games that you won't find on the 360.

do whatever you like but i hope that you'll not only play Little Big Planet when your PS3 arrives.

no, Bioshock doesn't play better on the PS3 and this comes from a hardcore Bioshock fan. i've played this game on the 360 and the PS3 version is inferior. it's still a great game but not as good as on the 360. it's definitely not better on the PS3.

but i HAVE been playing the PS3 version for the past 6 days, and i'm having a GREAT time with it.

outside of the pop up message issue, the gameplay, story, and graphics are AMAZING (well, the story is what you make it, but the path your on is interesting enough).

it's not surprising that Gamespot finds a way to deduct a full .5 points from the score they gave the PS3 version, but i have a feeling that it would literally take having both versions side by side to notice any differences, and they would be slight.

the framerate, controls, EVERYTHING else outside of that pop up message PSN issue is spot on.

i have no complaints, and i give the game a solid 9.5/10. i can say that since i got it, me and my fiance haven't touched Fable 2 in those 6 days (which was enjoyable, but lacks the depth of Fallout 3. of course, that's not really a fair comparison).
