PlayStation 4 Outsells the Xbox 360

The PlayStation 4 has outsold the lifetime sales of the Xbox 360, according to VGChartz estimates.

The PlayStation 4 sold 533,999 units for the week ending November 17, 2018 to bring its lifetime sales to 86.15 million units. This compares to the Xbox 360 with sales of 85.80 million units.

It should outsell the PS1 as well. Even passing the Game Boy is possible. PS2 and DS with sales over 150 million is likely out of reach, but I wouldn't say impossible. It depends how much Sony support the console and when the PS5 launches.

Sony consoles have a tendency to sell well pretty far outside of their lifetime. I think the PS2 was at 110 million when the PS3 launched, but continued to sell almost 50 million more in the years to come. So it's possible.

Personally, I think it'll probably cap out at 125 mil, making it the second best selling home console and third best selling video game console overall.

Should have passed PS3 before the end of November as well, if it didn't it's guaranteed to pass it before the end of the year.

By holiday 2019 Wii and PS1 will on the chopping block as it makes its way to 105m, and eventually GB will be passed as it sales it's last few years on the market from 2020 - 2022 (PS5 likely 2020).

PS2 and DS should be safe.

@theknoghtsofknights yes ps4 is not selling 40 million more after ps5 launches. You got to take into account DVD players were still massively popular. The ps2 was the cheapest DVD on the market and it played games. It was a no brainer for anyone in into buying a DVD.

Look at the PS3 for example it didn’t even sell 5 million more once the ps4 launched.

I expect the ps4 to hit 100 million but not much more. That’s based on the fact I think the ps5 is releasing mid 2020

I kind of agree we're coming to an end because people are waiting on PS5. Most gamers don't even /know/ what PS4-Pro is and considering the economy most of us only have money for more well-planned purchases. Most base-PS4 owners who even know about the Pro are waiting on PS5 as well at this point considering how late in the gen it is.

If it launches next year it will likely have BC with upgraded games so it stays in the PS4 ecosystem and benefits from it until support for PS4 is axed in 2022 or so and by then we'll be in PS5 gen fully. As for 16 Mil I'm 50/50 on that.

^^^ also to the comment above, you don't think those heavy hitters will become cross-gen so they can sell PS5s? Understand here they have the chance for having the single greatest console launch /in gaming history/ by giving TLOU2/Death Stranding upgraded graphics on PS5. Of course there will be a PS4 version but to think they won't have an upgraded PS5 version as well as save these games for the launch at this point is kind of short-sighted.

Lol how wrong you are. The PS4 is still $299 and as Black Friday has shown the past 2 years massive amounts of people bought it at $199. When it hits that pricepoint officially this thing will sell millions and millions. The PS5 isn't coming until 2020 at the earliest. Sony will sell close to if not 16 million in 2019 alone. It will pass 100 million next year wait and see. PlayStation consoles have a history of selling pretty well long after the next one releases.

I think the RROD contributed to a lot of 360 sales I went through 4 Xbox 360s until the Slim Model was release all 4 old models got rrod I sent them to Microsoft they repaired each console multiple times when the warranty ran out I had 4 useless consoles. I never got compensated by MS I remember someone did on a UK watchdog TV programme. Also a lot of people firmware hacked their 360s and got banned from Xbox Live so they had to re-buy the 360 console to play online again which also contributed to 360 sales although I agree with Microsoft banning modders. But RROD problem still sucked for people when the warranty ran out.

Youre certainly right. I am positive that the 360 numbers were "Shipped" numbers and those included not only re-buys but REPLACEMENT systems. Not that it doesnt happen to any console but I think are able to safely say the 360 failed more often than any console historically beating out the early PS1 laser issues by a good margin...

After supporting them since the beginning, the OG Xbox was the first console I bought as an adult and thought it'd be great to have a new player in the game! It was for quite a bit but the RRD and how that played out in this household put a bad taste in my mouth and then instead up getting back on track and delivering compelling games, the Xbox is what it is today!

Xbox 360 had a strong presence in the UK market. Although PS4 seems to be stronger in Germany than it is in UK, it’s still possible for PS4 to overtake Xbox 360 in the UK within the coming years.

It might but the 360 broke so frequently that the PS4 probably already addresses more users in the US than Xbox did. The Xbox One is a much better developed piece of technology so it will never ever pass Playstation again because it doesn't break fast enough.

a good 30+ million came in the last 2 years or so of the 360's life. I don't know if that is due to the slim being released but it would explain it.

The System has a lot of support and games on the horizon plus it hasnt hit its lowest pricepoints yet. Once youre able to walk into a store and buy a bundle for like 150 or even 129 expect 10-20 mil more sales in a couple years after that, above whatever its already hit by then, over the holiday seasons etc as non-gamers buy them for the existing library and as gifts.

Its amazing that they even think the PS4 won't sell after the PS5 drops. The PS4 hasn't even hit the sweet point of $199.99 yet and as we saw with Spiderman no one could keep it in stock when the price was that low and they don't think a bundle with TLOU2 wouldn't do insane numbers as well?

Not everyone has a budget to buy $500 launch consoles, but, a $199.99 PS4 with an amazing library that will be extremely cheap by the time the PS5 launches. A system that can stream games with services like Netflix, plus cheap games at $199.99 will continue to sell and by the time the PS5 launches a cheap Pro will give another option to get the same in 4K.

Like someone else pointed out the PS2 sold almost 50 million after the PS3 launched and it was because it hit the right price and the massive library that it sold so well. The PS4 should be able to do that as well. Find it unbelievable that they think the ONLY home console maker to ever have 3 out of 4 generations that break a 100 million and overall including portables sold over 500 million systems couldn't repeat the same success.

PS4 is a major success and Xbox one was a major flop. Microsoft killed all their momentum and market share gained with the 360. This is the reason ms needed to find a value add for Xbox because it wasn’t selling no. So they added free backward compatibility. Free 4K blu Ray player. And introduced game pass. But non of it has stopped Sony’s momentum. Sony has just buckled down and delivered great games and many single player games without dumb monetization options like micro transactions. From the very beginning with games like infamous second son and bloodbourn. To their later titles like uncharted 4, horizon, Detroit and god of war. And their upcoming games like ghost of tushima and last of us 2. All long being backed up by great third party exclusives nioh, neir, gravity rush, hellblade etc. While ms seems to have mismanaged development with games being canceled. Like scale bound or the releases games not being great like state of decay and sea of thieves.

I’m not falling for ms’s bait this time. People are loving game pass but for me it’s a service geared towards casuals. Like really who’s is buying a PS4 pro or Xbox one x to play the old games they have up their like banjo or the re1 remake? Sure they’re are better games too like doom and ori which are some of my favourite games of this Gen. But it’s practically 2019 now and if you haven’t already played doom or ori you’re probably a casual type gamer. To me game enthusiast right now have long played those games and are in to titles like spider man and red dead 2. Both titles by the way can only be played if you own a PS4 by the way. As if you had a Xbox only you can’t play Spider-Man.

And that’s really Microsoft problem. Sure they are putting future 1st party games on game pass. But why would you subscribe now for those games that aren’t even out or announced yet? The first party titles they have out at the moment are titles hardcore Xbox fans would have already played. If you own a Xbox and in 2019 haven’t played halo 5 or gears 4 yet? I don’t think so. Like I said this would be great if you never had a Xbox and for one now. But that would make you a casual gamer at best. Who is buying a Xbox one as the generation comes to a close when a new Xbox will likely be shown next year.

Lastly bet your bottom dollar that when next gen rolls around and due to their developer purchases ms might actually have some good first party games that can sell a console. You won’t be getting those games on game pass. As soon as they can further monetize gamepass they will. There will be tiers to the program like they originally had silver level and gold level for Xbox live. At 9.99 you’ll get all Xbox games but for games that require the next gen Xbox if you want those games on game pass expect to play more for that level of the service. Typical Microsoft model I’m surprised people haven’t caught on yet.

Just to be clear. I’m. It saying Xbox one isn’t profitable. But I thinks it’s a flop compared to the expectations Microsoft had. I believe coming into this generation ms probably believed that this time, their 3rd attempt at it would be the time they actually beat Sony at their own game. They thought they had a superior product, they WERE confident to charge 100 dollars more! They thought thru their market research they had all the features Sony neglected. You would be able to game and stream YouTube on the side watch you favorite tv show. It included a HDMI in etc. They really thought it would be the one product every one needed, hense the name. Imagine going from that mind set at the beginning of your product reveal/launch then having to slowly go back on all those features, including the online only bs too. To try and be more like the competitor. They thought they would reap in profits by eliminating used games. They were so confident that they didn’t need bungie , they let them go when they had first chance to snap them up. They thought they would poach one of Sony’s best developers relations in insomniac. And guess what it all fell flat for them. To the point they changed the rules and stopped reporting sales figures. Even Nintendo during the wii u reported their abismal numbers. Ms tried to make it about “monthly active users” and what not. Also look at their recent developer purchases they didn’t think that would be necessary. They are paying the price now and trying to buy up developers. If they had known things would be like this, they would have hung on to bungie when they could have.

And to be fair. A lot of the same reasoning I use here can also be applied to Sony in the ps3 gen. Sony thought they had all the features like back compat and USB card readers etc and needed to roll back features. Maybe ps3 ended up profitable, but coming from the huge market share lead they had with ps2 vs Xbox it was a flop of a generation for them and their expectations. But Sony corrected and came out very dominate in ps4 gen.

All that said, yes I think Xbox one was a flop but I also think Xbox CAN dominate next gen. Sony was able to correct after ps3. The interesting question we’ll have to wait and see is if ms can do the same after Xbox one. I believe in them. They seem to be making moves. It will be a very interesting next generation to see if any of the two make any huge blunders again or the better scenario both companies bring their A game and we see what happens when there are two really strong brands going head to head!

Ps. Even if we forget about the sales number success of PS4. And xbox’s 40 million. And forget about the company’s expectations. I think even as gamers we can say Xbox was a flop in terms of games. A lot of Xbox fans them self realize this was the weakest generation game wise for Xbox. Sure they had some really cool games like quantum break and gears 4 and Forza horizon 4 are good games. But people weren’t blown away by them and won’t remember them like the games Sony brought such as horizon, bloodbourn, soft reboot of god of war.

After coming off of almost 90 million sales? Yeah that would be a flop. The PS4 will easily break 100 million and it hasn't even hit $199 yet. The Switch in just over 2 years will overtake Xbox in year 6 for sales. If the PS5 sold say 50 million or less next gen it would be the same.

An analogy it would be like some movies that flopped in theatres, but, did amazing retail sales after the fact. It would still be considered a flop at theatre even though ultimately it became profitable after the fact. This would be no different. Just like those 'flops' can become classics and make money after the fact as well you can't measure your success in isolation it has to have a measure against their competitors.

All of these numbers are padded, RROD was an issue , I went through it with 2 X360's , I also went through a PS3 as my launch system crapped out, I, as I'm sure many people also bought multiple PS4's and X1's I got a launch PS4 dumped it for a Pro and then dumped that for a God of War Pro...thats one person buying THREE PS4's....same with X1, bought a launch dumped it for a project Scorpio edition....thats 2....no one was buying multiple Wii's or PS2's like people do today with these newer systems....those systems made wide market penetration

I don't know if the RROD would really cause that much of a padding, I don't know if they are counted or how they are counted. I had a 360 fixed, sent it to for free. I don't think this counts as 2 in the numbers.

Same with the YLOD my friend had to pay like £80 each time his PS3 broke. If it didn't last 3 months after fixing then the 2nd repair is free.

I don't think these are counted in the PS3's numbers. However, I think a lot of people would have switched to the slim versions later in the Gen. This is the biggest factor in my opinion. The slim 360 looked much better than the orginal 360. and had a proper internal hard drive and no RROD issue.

nah man no comedy at all,i will tell you all about my struggles.
#1.my daughter poured orange juice on it,i still gave it back for warranty,i waited a long month for it and while i waited i bought new one #2,then they replaced the juiced one with new console #3 which i sold,after some time my number #2 started to work so loud it became annoying,so warranty replaced it with a new one #4 i took a MGS bundle,it broke after few months,it was working but could not see my controllers,again gave it to warranty,and bought Uncharted bundle console #5 then and there,in a month they said they could not fix the MGS console and gave me a new one #6,also MGS bundle,then Pro came out so i sold both #5 and #6,got me a Pro version it was #7 and again it took 6 months to break,worked loud as hell(i got a youtube video to prove it)and again warranty got my back,sadly it took them 30 days to realize they cannot fix it(meanwhile i played on my #3 which was sold to my friend few years earlier)and after 30 days they gave me a new Pro with new warranty and it was #8 i played it for 10 months now,works perfectly thank god.So there you go no BS here.
