To me its without a doubt God of war. But I have a feeling that GOTY would be RDR2

darthv722368d ago

If they were doing categories like exclusive and multiplat then God of War for best exclusive game and RDR2 for best multiplat. and Spiderman for best licensed game based on a fictional character.

And the GOTY goes to........ God of War.

fiveby92368d ago

I think GoW was a riskier venture in that they really changed the gameplay formula and story from previous iterations. Although RDR2 really improves upon the mechanics and realism of open-world gameplay. RDR2 is more iterative but still amazing in how far it's improved. Not sure it's worth picking just one game. I haven't played Spidey just yet. So I guess it's a bit of a toss-up for me. But my guess.... the 'press' will vote for RDR2 as it's multiplat and that pleases other parties.

Skull5212368d ago

It’s Red Dead without question, nothing in years has come close. Not just GotY, but Game of the Generation.

bluefox7552368d ago (Edited 2368d ago )

Completely agree. Game journos tend to lean towards multiplats to begin with, unless there's just nothing really good that came out that year. I'm enjoying RDR2, but it doesn't have anywhere near the level of polish or masterfully crafted gameplay mechanics. GoW really was the total package. Many great games excel in one or two areas, be it combat, story, world creation, but GoW really nailed everything.

King_Noctis2368d ago (Edited 2368d ago )

“Game journos tend to lean towards multiplats to begin with”

So why did games like The Last of Us, Uncharted 2, and BOTW won GOTY?

Was there not a 4th game that could be added to that thumbnail?

Lot of good games this year....although I think GOW and RDR2 are the obvious front runners. But can't dismiss how good Spider-Man is.

God of War by far at the moment.

I am either suffering from open world fatigue, or I'm just not clicking with RDR2... I'm late into Chapter 2 I think, but I'm honestly bored out of my mind! I find the shooting mechanics to be AWFUL, the controls and player movement are clunky beyond belief, and the repetitive animations just to do the simplest of tasks are wearing extremely thin.

I can see the animations of the characters movements, voice acting and audio are top notch, but otherwise I'm just not getting it... Maybe it is because I am early on in the game... I will carry on and see if it changes my mind.

Elda2368d ago (Edited 2368d ago )

Agreed!! You're definitely not alone,I feel the same way about RDR2.

Skull5212368d ago

I’m the other way around. I got to that like giant turtle house in God of War and I’m bored out of my mind and haven’t touched it in 6 months or more.

bluefox7552368d ago

I share this sentiment completely. When I got God of War, I couldn't stop playing it. I'm about 8 hours into RDR2, and I find myself playing the SOTN remaster more lately. The gameplay mechanics of RDR2 just seem fairly unpolished for a game of this budget.

agent132368d ago (Edited 2368d ago )

keep playing and exploring, the game has a slow pace but it gets better when you proceed with the story and face new missions and challenges

Elda2368d ago

Totally agree as I played the first hour of GOW I was blown away, totally intrigued & couldn't stop playing. This past weekend I started chapter 2 of RDR2 & after 1 hr I got so bored & started playing some Van Helsing,SOTTR,Dead Cells & AC:O well into the morning light & I had a ball...time just flew...lol!

chiefJohn1172368d ago

Tell me why I'm not surprised lol😂

chiefJohn1172368d ago (Edited 2368d ago )

Ive invested about 25 hours and I'm just now making it to chapter 3. It's felt like a full game already and I still have a long way to go. Controls are great I have no complaint.still waiting for someone to tell me what's so bad about them. Lol brings up repetitive animations but with Gow have no complaints oh the irony. To each their own

PhoenixUp2368d ago

Clearly Sea of Thieves beats all 🤣

darthv722368d ago

Best technical achievement... for the water effects.

rainslacker2368d ago

Good thing CD3 didn't release this year, or all those other games wouldn't have stood a chance. :)

ArchangelMike2368d ago

I'm absolutely loving RDR2, I don't get all the complaints about the game. It's the most immersive open world game I've ever played. But I have to say God of War for GOTY, because even though RDR2 is very highly polished, GOW innovated and reinvented the game much better.

UCForce2368d ago

It’s hard to choose, my friend.

ArchangelMike2368d ago

I agree that it is really hard to choose, I love just getting immersed in RDR2, hanging around camp talking to the gang, maybe go fishing or hunting with one of the gang, and then robbing a stagecoach on the way back to camp. The story and the writing - even for incidental NPC's are top quality; also the fact that the missions have gold ratings increases the replayability of the game even further. So I'm defiantely sold on RDR2 being a strong GOTY candidate.

However, if I'm completely honest, I think the innovation and evolution of RDR2 has less of an impact, or is less significant, than the innovation in God of War. God of War redesign was much more of a revolution - than just an evolution of the franchise. But it's a very close call, and I'm willing to bet that RDR2 will win GOTY because it is multiplatform. Anyway it'll be interesting to see the numbers at he end of the day.

Strange_Evil2367d ago

At least you get to choose if you own a PS4 ;)

Ezio20482368d ago

I don't get "rdr2 will win because it's multiplatform". Where were you when tlou, uc2, uc4, half life 2 etc won. They were all exclusives. If a game wins, it wins. Simple.

agent132368d ago

the last of us didn't won goty in game awards instead in 2013 grand theft auto 5 was the winner

MrVux0002368d ago

agent13
we are talking GOTY awards overall... game awards is not the only party that chooses the GOTY. There are hundreds of different sites and various other awards shows that do GOTY awards.

In which The Last Of Us won more GOTY awards that GTAV in 2013, and thus being the ''ultimate'' GOTY 2013.

rainslacker2368d ago (Edited 2368d ago )

@Agent

Most GOTY awards for any given game

1. The Witcher 3 (251)
2. Dragon Age: Inquisition (Unsure the count, but it makes 2 on the lists)
3. TLOU (240).

For the most part, no one really takes the VGA's seriously, because it's entirely commercialized without even trying to pretend its impartial.

agent132368d ago

i kinda agree, even though we all know rdr2 is bigger and more creative still god of war feels better

EpicFruityPie2368d ago

people these days seem to like 24/7 action give them a slower game like rdr2 role-playing in a way and they get bored
people seem to have lost their attention span and can't handle a nice story

MrVux0002368d ago

"people these days seem to like 24/7 action give them a slower game like rdr2 role-playing in a way and they get bored "
Funny because most of the haters of GOW stated that the game is slow and boring...
"people seem to have lost their attention span and can't handle a nice story"
... both games had nice story. Tho to me personally GOW story was more satisfying in comparison to RDR 2 (especially when we are talking game ending).

rainslacker2368d ago

I wouldn't be as bored if the game play itself was better. And slow doesn't mean boring. Its boring because it's not overly interesting once you get past all the glitz and glam.

Not that I'm overly bored with it, or the story, but it's not some remarkable experience to me so far.

chiefJohn1172368d ago

RDR2 went the extra mile to bring the world to a new level. The amount of hours of fun you can invest surpass gow therefore it deserves goty over gow imo and that not even counting online. Add that and it's a sweep.

Neonridr2368d ago

God of War or RDR 2 seem to be the easy bets. Smash could get some votes once it releases too.

King_Noctis2368d ago

Imo, GoW will win PS4 game of the year, FH4 will be for X1, Smash will be for Nintendo, and the overall one will be RDR2.

Neonridr2367d ago

those are solid predictions.

Ex-CoD producer tells devs to “be more like Larian, less like Activision”

Rubin: "Thank you! A lot of games, Call of Duty included just focus on how to make the most money possible out of the player base. They rely heavily on FOMO marketing and EOMM matches. But I feel like it used to be just more about the quality of the game which would drive players to play. And that means making the game more player centric. i.e. less engagement based tactics and higher quality experiences for the players. Better maps, modes etc. In other words your game should have a high player count because it's good and people want to play it rather than people playing it because the game has a $250M marketing budget. Everything is just said is very simplified as it would take too long to really go into it. One last simple analogy. Be more like Larian, less like Activision."

Sonyslave31d ago

Lol the producer of xdviant a cod clone in every shape and way, including the micro & fomo is piss off his game getting shut down.

Sonyslave31d ago

Yet you work for another scummy company like Ubisoft that fight to flood single player games with useless battle passes, predatory microtransactions and to take away player ownership of the games they pay for.

This twitter post exposed this fool

Weird article written by a bot.

In any case I knew EA would ruin Codemasters.

Codemasters will likely close soon😞
