Indie Dev and Marvelous Community Affiliate Petitioning Sony to Stop Censoring Japanese Games

A Marvelous Community Affiliate is asking Sony to lighten it's current and surprising trend towards censoring Japanese games like Senran Kagura. The community affiliate, known as “yagyu4k” on Twitter, started a Change.org petition in the hopes of drawing attention to Sony’s alarming tack towards censoring localized games.

Sony moves its American HQ to California, starts censoring games and telling its fans that its for their protection. How quaint.

Aura75412421d ago

Not only that, but even PS4 games in Japan are censored because of Sony's censorious policies. Nintendo, after being censorship-happy with the Wii U, has been way more open nowadays. I mean... look: https://twitter.com/gematsu...

Sounds like something the government would say

annoyedgamer2421d ago

Chinese government maybe. And all the US tech companies are drooling at the power of communist censor boards.

gamer78042421d ago

if nintendo were smart they would capitalize on this mistake of Sony's. Release games on switch as developers have intended and leave Sony's watered down version on the ps4 and take sales.

Matrix62421d ago

Something has already begun. The next Omega Labyrinth game is being developed for the Switch only. And soon all the Gan Gal and Senran games will only be available on Switch & PC. :(

Sony has made a comment about this? Where did they make mention that it was for our protection?

Never understood how Sony has no problem with the most violent of titles, but god forbid it have intense sexual themes

Aura75412421d ago

My hypothesis is that Sony is thinking along the same lines of Jack Thompson's stance against violent video games, i.e. consumers playing games with sexual content will be more inclined to sexually harass/sexually assault innocent people. However, similar to how there are studies that disprove the notion that violent video games encourage real life violence, there is no empirical evidence that points to sexual video games leading to real life sexual harassment/assault.

I signed the petition I hope others will as well, censorship isn't the answer.

Aura75412420d ago

It's as if the "Don't like it, don't buy it" philosophy has been completely forgotten at Playstation HQ.

rainslacker2420d ago

I signed it, and also encourage others to. It doesn't take much to sign.

Not to discourage people, but unfortunately, these things usually don't amount to much. I think the only thing I've found fruitful from these in the years...that I know about anyhow....is that the US isn't interested in creating a Death Star.

Sony has some internal reason for doing this, and I don't agree with it. But they should at least give a real reason for doing it, and not some utter, "Think of the children" crap. The people who play these games and enjoy these niche Japanese games are intelligent enough that they can see through PR BS, and should be respected enough to be told the truth. These are the kinds of gamers who support PS because Sony has a platform that has games that people like. There's a reason that Sony has the Otaku gamer, and there are enough of them collectively to not ignore, and that collective is a big reason that Sony sells so many consoles.
