You do not get hd gaming and performance is below sub par compared to what is out there.
It will be dead very soon as well with Microsoft themselves already talking about next gen.
Microsoft has yet to make any new AAA games this gen of which is the best value of a gaming console.
No new games removes value from xbl due to.. nothing of value being offered.
It also removes reverse compatibility as something to brag about because said feature will literally be the exact same feature next gen due to nothing new this gen.
As a consumer, there is no value in Microsoft currently. It’s console is a bargain bin item currently.

I only bought the PS3 when i did because it was currently the cheapest bluray player. It didn’t have the exclusives to carry it at the time the 40GB came out. And i bought it because it was a great value. Just like what we are talking about here (great value for a console)

depends on the type of exclusives you are interested in. If you like FPS and Racing games then the xbox one would be the better choice. If you like mostly single player story based games then the ps4 would be better for you.

See, this article states "Of All Time".

The PS3 is easily the best value console of all time. It cost $800+ to manufacture but was sold for $500 and $600 at launch. Sold at a loss so that Bluray had an extra push. On top of being the cheapest, and best Bluray player for years, it was all around a state of the art box with its CPU, RAM configuration, every box including a HDD, and Bluray inclusion. Though, it definitely lacked on the media functionality since they didn't allocate RAM to background tasks like music playback and party chat. I didn't even mention that it had Wifi built-in for free while it was $100 extra for the competition. In case you don't know, the OtherOS option was only ever added to classify the PS3 as a computer for saving costs on shipments since computers had less import tax than media devices.

I personally do wish that the PS4 had a 4K Bluray drive because I would actually use it, but Sony is smart to not have invested in it for PS4. Bluray's in general still need to be marked down and 4K needs to become more abundant. On top of that, most use streaming now and few use 4K for movies. I expect the next consoles to have a better drive to read 4K and 100GB or higher Bluray discs.

PS3 was fully BC with 2 generations of PS consoles. It was 400-500 less than stand alone blu-ray players at the time, and could play media off all sorts of media types. Came with wifi and networking built in, where wifi included was not as common back then.

Despite the criticism of the price, value wise, it was about as good as one is going to get.

JRPGs? Lots of them like Persona 5, Dragon Quest 11, Digimon etc
Sports exclusive like MLB?
Fighting games? Again a lot of exclusive fighters like KoF, Guilty Gear, Blazblue etc
VR games? Last I checked Xbox gots none.
Action adventure exclusives? Like Fist of the North Star, Yakuza etc

Tbh I'm not a fan of GT games. I got them all up until 6. I have played 6 and sport but just did not get the wow from them. Just like Project Cars did not give me the the feeling although project cars 2 dose.

Now playing racing games in VR I agree are good but again vr is not for me as I want to get home chill on my sofa in front of the tv not put something over my head.
If you also read I said for me. Both GTS and DC are good games in there own right but I had to make a decision when I jumpped to this new gen as I now have a baby and less time to game. I was on the PS front and getting DC but when Sony said they had pushed it back I ended up getting the Xbox one because it had Forza 5.

What I was trying to say in my reply to tross is that just because one consoles has less excludes dose not mean it's better than all the other consoles. It all depends on the games you are.

For me as a racing fan the Xbox has the better racing games and more games I'm interested in both in the FPS and Racing gore than both the switch and ps4.

But the switch has better platform exclusives and family fun games. The ps4 has the most choice in 1st party games and also the best choice in action adventure games like UC, God of war, Spider-Man ect.

All 3 consoles stew great in there own ways it just depends what type of gamer you are to what is best for you.

I've noticed that MS has not really pushed the base X1 since they announced the X1X. There is value in the OGX1, I won't deny that, but MS doesn't do much to really push that idea on potential customers. Everything they show or talk about is about the X1X, and that's an expensive console, at a time in the generation where the casual is buying in, and would be looking for good value.

First systems didn't have hdmi, didn't have full BC with og xbox, didn't have wireless controllers, you had to buy batteries for the wireless controllers released later, overpriced wifi adapter, expensive hd player, didn't have as many usb ports, didn't have memory card slots, $50 a year for online play. (that's another $500 on top for 10 years compared to free online),you couldn't turn it into a Linux computer, didn't play bluray movies or 3D Bluray movies, you didn't have motion control built into the Xbox controller, didn't play as many 3D games.

If you tried to match PS3 fat for everything it did built in on the $499 or $599 system, you paid a lot more on Xbox 360. And it still didn't play as many games as PS3 fat as it played 99.9% of all PS1 and PS2 games.

That's more value in comparison.

Why do people keep ignoring that there was a $500 option at launch? It wasn't a secret. Seems more like willful ignorance, or some people just built their opinion based off fan boy pettiness at the PS3 launch. The only difference in the two SKU's was the size of the hard drive.....which was just a bit above what the difference in cost was for those size drives at the time anyways. And I believe there was a few of the media ports missing as well.

And despite what you think, if you look at what it offered, in terms of how value is measured, it is probably going to win out because of all it offered at launch. All those things separate, or with all those extra features if you could even find them, would have cost well over $600.

I think its a decent value for the current time, but certainly not of all time. Until something else comes in at a huge loss for the company making it, the launch PS3 is probably going to hold that crown.

However, I think unless someone just likes the games that MS has to offer, that the OGPS4 is probably a better choice. It doesn't cost much more, and there are more high profile and critically acclaimed games which you can't play elsewhere. It plays fine, and overall, I think there isn't much lost by not going with the more powerful mid-gens.

That being said, rating a console as best of all time based on a short sliver of a generation seems kind of dumb to me. There are points in time during a gen where any given console's value will go up or down based on varying factors like games and features either added or removed. PS3 maintained it's value through the gen, but it lessened as it continued, or certain features were removed. The price coming down, and the game software helped keep the value up.

I bought my XBO S a few months ago for something like 170 euro, including Forza Horizon 3 and FIFA18. With its ability to play games from my 360 days, it seemed like very good value to me.

That said, as a current-gen console, obviously it's still lacking a library of impressive exclusives, especially compared to PS4.

First, the author mentions how the console has tremendous value because the entry price was cheaper compared to a real HD Blu-ray player. In that case, the PS2 would win because the DVD player was a lot cheaper compared to normal DVD player of the time.

Also, the PS2 had BC with ps1 (heck Ps3 had BC with Ps1 and 2) plus they were actually improving the old games with filters and others whistles.

Last, the author fails to explain his definition of Value. Is it the number of games you can play today on it? Is it the cost of playing a game on the system?
For example, you could say that Xbox1 S has the best value because you can sample Gamepass, BC and etc a cheap price. But I could argue that ps3 offer more value due to 2 BC possibilities without having to pay an Internet, Game Pass, and Xbox Live Subscription.

In the end, I agree that the Xbox 1S offer some tremendous value to a new customer with some cheap options to play hundreds of games. But, as the best value console of all time?

I have the One X and it's great but, yeah if you don't care about having 4k and you can deal with lowered graphics settings.... You can get one used on ebay for under $200. A full gaming system with a 4k blu ray player in it for $200? Yeah. That's a pretty good deal. (actually there is one on ebay now that has a controller, HDMI cable and power cord for $182 and a few more for bids under that). The One S isn't going to blow you away with performance, but, the value is there for sure.

It may be good for 4k movies but that's about it.Since XBO has been on the market it has a small exclusive library of XBO games & there hasn't been any AAA exclusive games released for the console in 2 years except for the recent release of the racer Forizon Horizon 4 & a couple of indies from early this year.

Maybe yes, maybe no. As of current generation every console has unique value for their customer :
1. Xbox = Exclusive games + BC
2. Playstation = Many great exclusive games
3. Switch = upcoming exclusive games + portability
The value is up to the customer. For me playing Yakuza is very very essential, but i don't have love for Forza while i admit Xbox's BC is somewhat interesting. Switch....Nintendo's console is always interesting, i'll get it but not now.

This reminds me of the "best game lineup in history" courtesy of MS. Oh how some people have short memories the PS2 had way more value. Fist of all digital media wasn't a thing yet so that meant that the build in DVD player in PS2's offered way more value than the 4K player in today's market. That's not even mentioning that the PS2 had arguably the largest game libraries ever, yeah best value console of all time is the PS2 nice try though.

Yes it's the best value, ignore stupid fanboys. I use PS4 Pro in combination with XBOX ONE S and both are amazing. XBOX 360 Backward compatibility and UHD 4k Playback is amazing.

PC gamer here. Well I picked one of these up the weekend £229 for Red Dead Redemption 2 later this month. Xbone S also came with four games. Forza Horizon 4, Fifa 2019, Tekken 7, Project cars 2 and three months subscription for live. Traded back in Fifa, Tekken and PC2 for Red Dead special edition which I get now for nothing (£75). Its a very good deal you have not got a PS4 or Xbox.
