John Carmack: Oculus Quest will end up competing with Nintendo Switch

Oculus Quest isn't just going to compete with other VR devices. It'll also have to content with Nintendo Switch, according to John Carmack.

It makes sense. The Quest will likely be similar hardware-wise, and they're both portable gaming systems.

It seems impractical as a portable game playing device. Mobile VR solutions aren't meant to really be used in such a manner. It can be taken with someone where ever they go, but it still can't be used in anywhere near the same manner as the Switch.

Only people who would wear this in public would be Kieth Apricary...then again he only wears Virtua Boy in public not an Oculus or Vive.

If the Quest can play Elite: Dangerous I might consider getting one.

If not, I'm really not interested. I would be better off buying a VR headset that works with my next PC.

*I would want my Thrustmaster HOTAS X to work with it. It would suck if I would have to buy an official Oculus HOTAS instead. I don't know what peripherals are compatible.

for cockpit style games, there is no real point to choosing the Quest over a Rift. Sure you might have a higher quality screen inside, but the machine powering it won't be able to compete with higher end CPU/GPUs. Since you are sitting down, having a wire to tether you won't be as bothersome.

I suppose so. But it would have been nice to play Elite in my recliner instead of over at my computer.

A stand-alone VR headset means you could play wherever and I like the idea. But I suppose the hardware wouldn't be good enough to run Elite.

yeah, don't get me wrong the Quest will still be pretty cool. I love the idea of an all-in-one device that has inside out tracking and full controllers. However, I just feel that a game like Elite would definitely push the hardware far too much.

I agree with you though, being able to play anywhere is pretty cool. Good question about the peripherals, I have no clue if the headset itself has a USB in for devices.

Nah, no way in hell. For starters it's more expensive. Seconders it has no indies or Nintendo games. I don't see this thing selling at all.

Im not interested in VR until they can pack current gen power into a standalone headset with a decent battery life..... Gonna be a while.

Switch is much less powerful than PS4 but a lot more powerful than last gen machines and he says this thing is basically an Xbox 360.

In some ways yes. Every electronic product competes with another for your time and dollars. And, it's portable.

But it's funny seeing some gamers change from "its got to be wireless." to "its got to have eye tracking, foveated rendering, 200 field of view, graphics at the level of today's intense games and less than $200." Yeah. Keep waiting as that will be years from now.

Quest is looking good for what it does, the price is great, you can play superhot on it and it's better in the 6dof factor then the old game. This is a good step forward for VR. Not basic. Not the most powerful. But right there in the middle. Goldilocks style.

if it's lifetime sales are even 1/10 of the Switch's it should be considered a success... but I am skeptical. This doesn't have a cult following nor the marketing to make up for it.

I seriously doubt it will ever pose a legit competitive presence. This reminds me of Steam Machines. These guys aren't good enough at marketing to make a real dent in the console hardware market.
