There is no excuse for microtransactions in Devil May Cry 5

If Capcom really does believe that gamers should be able to play Devil May Cry 5 whatever way they wish then why would they lock this flexibility behind a paywall that gamers without disposable income won’t be able to take advantage of?

First of all, there are only 3 playable characters, Lady, Trish and Vergil are not playable (unless they pull a fast one, or are added in via DLC)

Secondly this same purchase was in DMC4:SE and Red Orb Drop and Proud Soul drops were faster in SE then they were in it's initial release. We know attacks seem to run 32k on the expensive side, which most people playing the game are earning 20k-40k for a single mission so the MTX are not really cause an economy issue (That is actually still faster then DMC4 Vanilla release)

There is something in the game that is 3mil, but is confirmed not to be an attack and is rumored to be a taunt of some kind, but that is now a bad thing either, might be a decent day of grinding (Even less if you are good enough to S rank most mission and score higher)

I'm not down for MTX in games, but as long as they don't effect the in game economy making it take days to grind for things, I don't so much mind because largely it doesn't effect natural in game progress. I'll have my characters maxed out within a day or so anyways.

Though an ability to customize a difficulty sounds like a really fun idea.

@shloombmm3

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t MH World their best selling game to date? Where have the money from those sale gone to then? The game didn’t even have microtransactions. I’m all for wanting a gaming company to survive but you are acting as if Capcom’s entire company depend on MT in DMC.

And on the topic of survival, don’t blame consumer, blame Capcom for releasing crap games like SF5 which is a glorified early acess game at launch.

Also, I would pretty much prefer them to raise the game price outright to $70 instead of nickling and diming their customers with MT. Companies like Sony had never depended on MT for their games, they just release good game for $60 and yet they still exist in this “$60 per game” cruel world.

PapaBop2465d ago (Edited 2465d ago )

@Shoobmm3

So we should accept Capcom shoehorning MTs into games which they have no business offering them because if we don't, they'll go out of business? Capcom have struggled over the last 8 years because of their terrible decision making. They basically nearly ruined all of their top franchises with these decisions while simultaneously scaring off all their talent due to their unethical treatment of their employees.

I'd argue that Capcom probably means a lot more to me than to most people on here.. they literally defined three generations of gaming for me (Snes, PS1 and PS2) but I'll be damned if I accept unethical MTs because they've spent the majority of the last decade run by dinosaurs who don't understand their consumers.

It's a shame really, they look like they're making one hell of a comeback with RE7, MHW and RE2 remake looking amazing but these MTs in DMC feels very much like one step forward, two steps back. Worse thing is, the people running the company likely won't react to the controversy unless it starts effecting their preorder figures.

Cmoney0072465d ago

Always good to see your reasonable comments on here, Foxtrot. I hope you have been well?

LordJamar2465d ago

The principle lol. Hard day of work annoying people ima come home and play some dmc if the gameing world crashes cause of it so be it. Ima go enjoy my game and escape a bit fun while it last

“I'm not down for MTX in games, but as long as they don't effect the in game economy making it take days to grind for things, I don't so much mind because largely it doesn't effect natural in game progress”

Yeah keep hoping this won’t affect the game’s economy and grinding. You people never learn, and just because DMC4 remastered had this doesn’t excuse this one. For all we know there wasn’t much Capcom could’ve done with a game economy of a 10 year old game to fit in MTs

NovusTerminus2466d ago

Except for the fact that you missed, or chose to ignore my comment in my previous post where I break down and address the cost of attacks in DMCV.

So allow me to repost it.

"We know attacks seem to run 32k on the expensive side, which most people playing the game are earning 20k-40k for a single mission so the MTX are not really cause an economy issue (That is actually still faster then DMC4 Vanilla release) "

Most weapons in DMC run about 6-7 attacks for purchase, up to 10. So if you get 30k per mission (Choosing a median average here) you can max out a weapon within about 11 missions if EVERY attack on the weapon costs 32k, and all weapons have 10 attacks, which given DMC, is not normally the case, and the user who posted the pricing said that 32k was the most expensive skill he could find.

Given the evidence we have right now, it will not effect the in game economy at all. Would I prefer the game without it? sure, but it does not seem like it is going to effect the balance of the game with the information we have right now.

DarXyde2466d ago (Edited 2466d ago )

But for all you know, you are assuming the worst.

Seriously, put the pitchforks away for now. You MIGHT need them when the game releases, or you might not.

And really, why complain so much? Don't buy it then. Just don't buy it. That would literally solve all of your concerns. You have lived your entire life so far without DMCV. You'll manage. No game, no microtransactions to worry about. That simple. And by not supporting Capcom, if enough of you do it,
they'll go under and people can be content with the outcome (if that really is the collective will). Natural selection wil run its course and decide what happens to Capcom.

"Oh, but what if it's really good?" Then it sounds like you should stand your ground or cave and buy it, used or new.

By the way, I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying you really don't know how it will play out. The outrage is such a knee jerk reaction to "single player" and "microtransactions" in the same game. Just wait and see.

Sure, you can say that single player games don't need them, but so long as this is not grind heavy, it still sounds like it beats season passes, which people seemed to accept after R* did it.

Let it play out and the consumer will decide. Plain and simple.

Concertoine2466d ago

I agree.

I understand why MTs are bad and am fundamentally against them. But if this game is like DMC4 and it doesnt effect the balance of the game, i dont care. Its like how in Deus Ex you can buy MT’s for praxis kits.

If idiots are dumb enough to get them, let capcom take their money.

I mainly hate when MT’s unbalance a multiplayer game, or unlock content that is otherwise impossible to get in SP. im not seeing that here.

cartoonx12466d ago

this game is going to be made from scratch and will most likely be built around MTs in mind, DMC 4 was original designed without MTs so the base design never had MTs. When DMC SE introduce them it was still the same game.

Movefasta19932466d ago

kill it now before it grows. MT never get better they get worse. That's the point, and I agree that it was implanted well in 4se but again, it'll get worse and then every single player Capcom game will have it

trooper_2465d ago (Edited 2465d ago )

The last thing Capcom needed to do was add microtransactions, not when people were starting to warm up to them again.

Nitrowolf22465d ago

You act like those numbers DualShock reported on are set in stones when time and time again, any game showing to the public is typically made easier than it tends to be. Wasn’t there even a backlash for a nba game recently with its whole micro transactions where reviewers earned more vs the final game?

I’m wait and see where this goes but being Capcom I have little faith

Poopmist2465d ago

Yeah I didn't even know there were MT's in DMC 4 SE when I played it and only found out about it from this "controversy". I'm meh at those type of games and was able to get every upgrade I wanted without issue. It seems like the MT's will only be there to take advantage of impatient idiots and I think that's fine. The extra revenue could be great for convincing Capcom to make DMC 6 a little quicker this time. As long as the MT's don't make the game unplayable like Madden Ultimate team(Google it to see how bad MT's can really be people that are probably gonna give me like 30 disagrees).

It sucks, but i gotta buy this game. Sorry, guys.

I hope Capcom will reverse this decision, because this is a bad look and will probably hurt the hype.

annoyedgamer2466d ago

Wait a week, buy it used that way they dont get the money.

Elda2466d ago

Doubt a used copy will be available in a week.

Platformgamer2465d ago

i do that with activision games

Concertoine2466d ago

Is that happens capcom will shun DMC as one of those series they cant profit from MT’s.

DarXyde2466d ago

Agreed.

Even if it's grindy, Capcom will be surprised at my resilience.

I've always favored odd numbered DMC games (and even numbered Resident Evil games, before 6). Not gonna miss this. Action is smooth, beautiful, and looks like a legitimately awesome game.

Not paying beyond the base price, so I'l be content (unless there's cool DLC).

And for the people complaining about microtransactions...a question:

Would you rather optional MTs, or ads in your games? Last I checked, people raised hell about that years ago. Games aren't getting cheaper and Capcom is still kind of a wavering presence. Just don't buy any orbs and play the game. You might just get more longevity out of it.

2465d ago
Hungryalpaca2465d ago

I’m not buying based on principle. You want MTs in your single player game? No money from me.

DMC2 ranked 2nd and also DmC ranked 3rd?
What a load of BS!

ABizzel173d ago

IMO

6. DMC2 6/10
5. DMC4 7.5/10 (Hated Nero, repeat bosses, Dante was the saving grace but only about half the game)
4. DmC 7.5/10 (solid overall, some great ideas, meh story, dialog sucked, and the director almost killed DMC)
3. DMC1 8.5/10 (all around solid)
2. DMC5 9/10 (carried by Dante & Nero gameplay, I didn’t like V’s, Nero’s better but still not a fan)
1. DCM3 10/10 (chef’s kiss)

Vits73d ago

Well, it worked.

This nothingburger of a opinion article got a lot of views and comments.

Pyrofire9573d ago

WHAT!? who in their right mind would put 2 near the top (not at the bottom) unironically?
I think all of them are worth playing in their own right honestly, except 2 unless you REALLY want to experience the whole series.

FinalFantasyFanatic73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

I honestly don't know what the author was smoking, personally I'd rank DMC3 as no.1, maybe DMC5 as second, DMC1 as third, DMC4 as fourth, and DMC as fifth and DMC2 last. such a bizarre list, mybe the author just has strange taste.

DMC2 anywhere but last is crazy. Awful list overall.

BlaqMagiq173d ago

"Devil May Cry 2 isn’t trash. It’s just misunderstood by a fanbase that doesn’t like change."

This and putting DMC 2 number 2 is all I need to ignore this ranking. DMC2 is absolute trash and it's clear this person doesn't understand exactly why.

Flenter73d ago

For me: 3,1,5,4,2 and then .....Dmc

fsfsxii73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

Why is DmC last? Genuinely curious.

lellkay73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

Dmc is far superior to DMC2 come on

"almost 20-year-old series"

It's 24 years old.

Niiiiiice. Now use some of that profit to make Zack and Wiki 2 for Switch. Get a remake of the first one first atleast.

tinchotin1971d ago

That's the franchise you want Capcom to revive? LOL

AriesBear1971d ago

I think some people just make stupid requests because they think it's cute.
