Exclusives Are What Explain The Difference Between Consoles’ Performance, Says NPD Analyst

The question of how much exclusives matter in today’s market realities is something that has been extensively debated. Some, including Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, believe that exclusives are minimally important in terms of how a console is doing on the market. However, NPD Analyst Mat Piscatella recently sounded off on the issue himself, stating that exclusives are what explain the difference between the performance of different consoles on the market right now.

It's only debated because some don't have as many. . What you'll notice is that whenever exclusives are announced or released, said people get excited. . Exclusives are one of if not the most defining factor of a console. People can use any metric or downplay they want but it won't change the facts or their importance.

When exclusives go out the window, automatically you will lack competition and quality of work. People by Big Macs because they like Big Macs and it's exclusive to McDonald's. If they want a Duritos Locos Tacos they are exclusive to Taco Bell. If there were never any exclusives there would be no purpose in there being a Nintendo platform, PlayStation Playform or Xbox. Everyone would just play on PC inevitably as the Monopoly would be just about complete.

We know all too well, that in these fake fanboy wars on N4G and other platforms, exclusives only matter in support of your favorite console, despite the actual facts. Logic and captain obvious don't always show up here.

Well, to be fair Captain Obvious has a gig promoting hotels.com these days. In all seriousness though, yeah, gamers know that the main thing that sets one system apart from one that's nearly identical is the selection of games it has that its competitor doesn't. Even a system like the Switch with limited specs can do quite well if it has exclusives people want to play.

Exclusives give a console an idenity but they are derived out of the need to stand out and be competitive. It has always been this way for F sakes Sega made a hole ad campaign out of it when they went head to head with Nintendo. People that want all games on all platforms don't understand free markets and the need to at least appear different or offer consumer choice.

Off topic: Coca Cola owns many brands and half the market that give people the illusion of choice and Pepsi owns the other half so essentially you only have two choices even though there is an illusion of many choices.
