Ratchet & Clank PS4 Was a Disappointment

Ratchet & Clank PS4 Was a Disappointment - Ratchet & Clank has always been one of my favorite franchises. Ever since the original's release in 2002, there was something special about the series. Although successful, this new game was a large disappointment to myself and other longtime fans of the series.

Oh look. Another VGculture opinion piece trying to stir the pot.

Don't give them the clicks.

Aceman182493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

Hey author blow it out your you know what lol. I loved this retelling of R&C. Gotta love how the "media" think they know how all gamers feel about a particular game.

ApocalypseShadow2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

Shill/Trash articles. How they don't help N4G.

Recent article says that the game is the most successful game Insomniac has made. Obviously, most gamers enjoyed it and it was well reviewed.

Then we get this opinion piece that serves no purpose. Unless it's to trash the game with a SHILL ARTICLE and the developer because Spiderman is right around the corner from the same company. Sort of an indirect attack before release to downplay their next game.

BiggerBoss2493d ago

I thought this game was great, and so did my little 4 year old nephew.

The author may not have liked the game, but that doesn't make it a "disappointment".

Eonjay2493d ago

This article was a disappointment.

coolbeans2492d ago

@BiggerBoss

-'The author may not have liked the game, but that doesn't make it a "disappointment". 9;

The author was letdown by this remake to one of his favorite game franchises of all time. How does that word not qualify here from his/her perspective?

morganfell2492d ago (Edited 2492d ago )

It wasn't a disappointment to gamers and it certainly wasn't a disappointment to Insomniac. http://www.playstationlifes...

Remember, do not use a browser based site blocker to block worthless trash sites like vgculture because your browser actually visits the site momentarily before it is blocked so they still get a click. Learn how to use the hosts file in your system: https://helpdeskgeek.com/ho...

MuddyWaters2492d ago

I have all of the Ratchet games and I liked this one. The only ones I didn't care for were Deadlocked and even though I liked Quest for Booty it was overpriced for what you got.

rainslacker2492d ago

@coolbeans

Why be disappointed though? It was the same story. Mostly the same levels updated. same weapons. Gameplay was the same, just refined to not be all wonky at times. Same mini-games. The cut scenes were different, but other than that, the game was pretty great.

coolbeans2491d ago

@morganfell

"It wasn't a disappointment to gamers and it certainly wasn't a disappointment to Insomniac. http://www.playstationlifes... "

If this is an indirect response to me, you've failed. If someone critiques a game on how it's a disappointment (looking at a game's material, gameplay, etc.) responding with how well it did financially and appealing to the majority isn't an argument.

@rainslacker

"Why be disappointed though? It was the same story. Mostly the same levels updated. same weapons. Gameplay was the same, just refined to not be all wonky at times."

I don't know. You'll have to bring it up with the writer of the article. But I'm not really buying it being the "same" per se. From what I've seen/heard about the original R&C and the remake, different design & storytelling philosophies took root between their respective eras. The original's philosophy sounds much better atm.

Razzer2493d ago

Agree. The title says all I need to know about this "article".

GottaBjimmyb2493d ago

Yea, regardless of if this is a troll or legitimate, I honestly think R&C is in my top 3 PS4 games, and that is among plenty of competition.

Babadook72493d ago

Yah. I’m reading the title and thinking “what planet this opinion came from?” I remember the reviews being very consistent. After getting it on ps+ I can’t see how this opinion needed to be shared. An embarrassment of an opinion that I don’t want to read more about.

Concertoine2493d ago

Eh, as a fan of the earlier games i thought ratchet and clank both felt lacking in personality. The graphics and gameplay were still great though.

neutralgamer19922493d ago

Good for you we all don't have to like the same games please okay something else that you enjoy

Why did you write an article about this game which came out a little while ago

Dab2493d ago

After I read article it made me want to replay...such a GREAT game!!

NotanotherReboot2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

ummm, you do realize this is a widely popular opinion within the Ratchet and Clank fanbase?

UCForce2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

“The game became the best-selling retail game in the UK in its week of release. The sales of the remake in its release week tripled the release week sales of A Crack in Time, the previous record holder. The remake also became the first game in the series to debut at No. 1 in the retail software sales chart, whilst being the best selling title on the PlayStation Store in Europe. On April 29, 2016, it was announced that Ratchet & Clank was the fastest selling title in the entire series. It was number 1 on the Australian charts during the week of release and became the second best selling game in the month of April in the U.S. at retail and on the PlayStation Store, making it the best launch of any game in the Ratchet & Clank series. NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan exclaimed that these sales recaptured success not seen for the franchise since the height of the PlayStation 2 era.” Are you seriously want this game to fail ?

Dark_Knightmare22493d ago

No it’s not if you’re going to say ridiculous crap bring some facts or gtho matter of fact gtho anyway because everyone knows you troll Sony in every article that’s about them

shinoff21832492d ago

No it isn't. I'm part of that fan base and I can tell from some of the comments from other fans of this game, that this is NOT a popular opinion within the ratchet and clank base

Cryptcuzz2492d ago

Widely popular among it's fan base?

I'm among the fan base and this is the first time I've seen anything like this.
I've been on this site for awhile now too, so what you say is false.

With it being the developers most successful game, I doubt that sentiment is a "popular" one.

DialgaMarine2492d ago

I honestly have only seen a very small amount of genuine R&C fans not like this game.

rainslacker2492d ago

BiggerBoss2493d ago

Absolutely.

I don't see why this one guy not liking it warrants an entire article calling it a "disappointment".

The meta-score speaks for itself, plenty of people loved this game.

morganfell2492d ago

Because this is the nature of these narrowminded self centered individuals that spent a few bucks, very few I might add, on a cheap website. They are not journalists and they would not, in a decent grammar class, qualify as writers. They think a review and more specifically an opinion piece is supposed to be about what they like and do not like. The idea of impartial judgement is alien to them. Show someone from vgculture an objective article and they are like a pig looking at a wristwatch. For these stains it is all about their over inflated ego and the delusion what they like is somehow of importance. I call it Kim Khardashian syndrome...without the butt.

hulk_bash19872493d ago

I don't agree with the author's opinion at all but that doesnt mean he isn't entitled to have it. My opinion is that Insomniac was able to create an amazing remake of their classic PS2 game. It was beautiful, rich and incredibly fun to play. Easily worth its price tag and deserving of its success.

BiggerBoss2493d ago

I agree that he's entitled to his own personal opinion, but does that warrant an entire article?

Should I, too, make an article about how I liked the game?

hulk_bash19872493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

@BiggerBoss

I mean, isn't that the point of an opinion piece article? You can make one as well if you feel inclined. That's the beauty of having a platform to express your opinions and ideas.

2492d ago
Aenea2492d ago

The problem with it is the timing of the article. The game was released over 2 years ago, but now, right before Insomniac's next big release which is another PS4 exclusive this article shows up.
If that doesn't sound iffy to you then I don't know what does.

Add to it that they already wrote an opinion piece a few weeks back about Spiderman being overrated and the picture is complete.

And if not go look at all the negative opinion pieces they've written lately about Sony, MS or Nintendo...

RememberThe3572492d ago

Is it the point of a comments section to comment on the article? The author spoke his mind and folks in the comments spoke theirs. Except I'm pretty sure more people read the comments than the actual article.

Case in point: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

UCForce2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

Yes, we already know that. It maybe not like original. But the game was successful in receptions and commercial. There will be another sequel to this and I do hope IG can improve story and gameplay even further. About that youtuber, he annoys me not because his telling the truth. It’s because he trying too much to be like Totalbiscut. I couldn’t stand with his God Of War review. You are way too cynical and skepticism in every ways. You tried so hard to be like him.

AspiringProGenji2493d ago

Ok? One video amounts to everyone being disappointed?

I loved the game but there are certain things that I didn’t like. I still think Insomniac was bold to reboot the series and add more. I just wished soen of the maps were actually bigger. This wasn’t a total remake like SoTC. It was a reboot

UCForce2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

“I Am Him” No, you are lying. About TwoForce, it was a long time ago. I shut down my old account because it wasn’t fit for me. I created a new one aka UCForce for a better fit and a fresh start. Yes, I did created multiple accounts which i got banned on N4G and I shouldn’t do that. But I won’t do that again and from now on, I will only using one account.

As a HUGE R&C fanboy this “writer” is off his rocker for claiming anything in the game was bad, but I myself was a little disappointed by the game. When the reviews were hitting claiming how it was ratchet returning to greatness and things like that Inwas super hyped but it turns out most “games journalists and media” just haven’t played most of the series and were completely lapsed fans. All of the ps3 ratchets especially a crack in time and even the budget game Into the Nexus were REALLY good. Compared to those the ps4 remake felt very shallow even though what was there was very good it just lacked the depth of other recent games. The one thing I didn’t like how tied to the movie it was. The redhead Disney channel girl that played one of the characters had some cringe voice lines. Idk maybe i’m just crazy.

I didn't love the original PS2 version since I found it harder to get into the game or rather I didn't love any R&C in the PS2 era rather I loved the PS3 era. But I love the PS4 remake and I am hoping they remake the sequel.

All those likes fir that doesn't mean it came from the ratchet and clank base. How many of the likes would you say are from xbox fan boys. Even with that. It still does not mean that the popular opinion us the ratchet game was bad. It was a reboot anyway a remake would of been more scrutinized for leaving something out. Plus wasn't there a ton of new stuff added. The game is good, looks great and was a blast to play, period regardless of this guy's article or this video you've posted about 5 times.

Barneyco2492d ago

Hey Frinker you're getting a little weird.

trooper_2492d ago

Your comments and attitude is really, really annoying, first of all.

I'm going to put that out right now.

Second of all, a youtube video tells us NOTHING because people dislike/like things for the sake of like/disliking it just to get a rise out of people. A bunch of multiple accounts could have spammed that like button multiple times because they have an agenda.

Grow up.

TheRealHeisenberg2492d ago

Lmao, that is exactly how things go down here on N4G and you have the nerve to tell someone to grow up. It is clear to me which agenda you support.

DialgaMarine2492d ago

Those likes are clearly because that’s a relatively popular youtuber, whose fans are naturally going to agree with what he’s saying, even if the majority of them have never played a Ratchet game. If PewDiePie made a video saying BotW was the worst game ever made, guaranteed it would get a shit ton more likes than dislikes. Just kindof his YouTube popularity works, so bad example.

"Please tell me were you got never sony from in my comment?"

This is a first party title.
Released and poorly optimised. You jump straight to AMD being completely at fault as if TLoU PC port didn't happen.

Christopher645d ago (Edited 645d ago )

AMD themself said it was a driver issue.

generic-user-name645d ago

You should probably make sure it is Sony before trying to fling mud.

ModsDoBetter645d ago

@Generic with the cope:

From DigitalFoundry,

"The comparison, which was shared by Digital Foundry, was accompanied by a written analysis that goes over some of the port's best features, such as good scalability, which allows players with the proper hardware to enjoy much better visuals than on PlayStation 5 and those with underpowered machines to have still a decent experience barring some stuttering, and issues, such as missing transparency effects at max settings, texture loading issues, shadows issues with ray tracing enabled, stability issues and more. With the additional disabling of ray tracing on AMD GPUs due to stability issues, it feels like this is yet another port that was launched in an unpolished state and that will require multiple patches to be in a truly acceptable one."

"it feels like this is yet another port that was launched in an unpolished state and that will require multiple patches to be in a truly acceptable one."

This is not solely an issue with AMD, the port is "yet another" with missing features.

AMD has always been crap compared to Nvidia. The only advantage they have is price.

DarXyde645d ago

And power efficiency. And arguably better performance on 1080p/1440p cards. And availability.

Nvidia cards really aren't worth hunting high and low for when there are very comparable AMD cards that are cheaper. I really have to give credit to AMD for their very frequent and consistent grind with RDNA. This issue I reckon is a developer level problem.

Can't really miss with either, but considering Jensen and Lisa are relatives, they probably laugh about these debates over a very expensive holiday dinner.

iAmyRose645d ago

Naw AMD have had instances of being good, Nvidia do have better features, raytracing and AI performance if you play with software that uses it though.

KeeseToast645d ago

@DarXyde
Power efficiency is not true at all this gpu generation. Nvidia‘s 4000 series is more power efficient that AMD 7000

DivineHand125645d ago

I believe AMD offers higher vram at lower price points compared to NVidia. We have found out that this generation needs at least 8GB to load the highest detail textures at 1080p.

This issue with the drivers will eventually be fixed for Ratchet and Clank, however, the vram issue NVidia has on their midrange and entry level cards can only be fixed by spending more money on a higher end card.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 645d ago
CantThinkOfAUsername645d ago

AMD has already confirmed it's a driver-related issue on their cards. Besides, AMD 'users' can't stop telling us how not important Ray Tracing is, how they always play with it off, and how it's an 'Nvidia gimmick.' This shouldn't be a problem for them I believe.

On a side note, kudos to Nixxes and Sony for releasing one of the best PC ports in 2023. Amazing graphics with Ray Tracing, great performance, detailed system requirements, plenty of graphics options, all upscaling technologies (DLSS, FSR, and XeSS), DirectStorage 1.2, and native Mouse and Keyboard support.

INMATEofARKHAM645d ago

Not surprised by an AMD driver issue... I love they are in the market and help keep Intel honest but I've had some whacked driver issues with then so I always just go with Intel anymore.

I'm sure they'll have it fixed in the coming days, if it even takes that long, just one of the joys of PC gaming.

ChasterMies645d ago

Imma just sayin’, this is why I play on consoles.

Good-Smurf645d ago

No issues at all on PS5 and some already called me being trolling yesterday.
No telling how well it will run on my PC because there's too things that can go wrong there being High End Nvidia stuff and everything.

MadLad645d ago

Consoles are highly limiting; and when devs screw up optimizing their games on console, you're screwed. You don't have the option of powering through it.

Binarycode645d ago

That's why always wait and see what the game plays like on any device before you buy.

I think they've done a good job porting it to pc, but it needs to be able to run on lower end cards and should have a ram indicator to show how much video ram is being used.

ChasterMies645d ago

That’s why I play on PS5. The user base is so big, devs can’t afford to screw up optimizing their games for it.

MrVux000644d ago

Looking at the overall state of PC gaming and its ports of AAA games for the past 3-4 years vs consoles ports.

Not really helping your case.

1nsomniac645d ago

People never listened when I said that this game doesn’t use “real” ray tracing on PS5. I believe it uses a very clever advanced/modified screen space reflection system. Which is why the real ray tracing doesn’t work on pc.

Outside_ofthe_Box645d ago

Does it matter? I thought we were past this "real" nonsense. The end results matter more. If you can't distinguish, who cares. If it allows for better/more stable frame rate who cares. MS f'd everything when they started using terms like "true" and "real" in their marketing when they launched the One X last gen. People are finally starting to realize that "True 4K" doesn't matter if you have to sacrifice framerate to achieve it. In the end something always has to give if you are truly pushing the hardware.

Binarycode645d ago

Raytracing reflections are used on PS5 as they are in Spiderman, Same engine. tested by professionals with first hand knowledge.

PC Ray-tracings problems are bugs and on AMD side a driver issue.

Lastly if AMD want to compete in the RT space, they need to come up with a solution. As in a unique chip to do it, not just make the gpu with some driver things help it. It's miles behind Nvidia.
