Posting on the ResetERA forums, James Stevenson, Community Director at Insomniac confirmed that Ratchet & Clank 2016 did pretty well, to put it mildly:

“The budget-priced movie-tie-in Ratchet & Clank game we made which got an 85 metacritic and is the most successful Ratchet/Insomniac game of all time.”

If Sony wants to partner with them on games there's nothing wrong with that. You seem to be ignoring fanatics from fans. Insomniac does not belong to anyone, they want to keep their independence and want to own the ip's they make. Sure things can happen like Microsoft got Ninja Theory but until then why can't we just enjoy Insomniac for who they are, why does it make you guys feel better if they only work with Sony?

Some of you take this whole console ownership way too seriously. As though it hurts you to see Insomniac games on another platform. They make Oculus games too, totally bypassing PSVR.

Well it wasn't just the film, they stripped Ratchet's personality along with the original ost and planets from the original. I'm glad it sold well because I love insomniac but the original ratchet is still WAY better.

How about no? Ratchet's story hasn't ended , we a need a sequel to intot he nexus. I don't wan't to go an entire generation without a PROPER ratchet game. Ratchet and Clank 2 was my fav ratchet game along with CRack, but it DOESN'T NEED A REMAKE. Wat's next, remake 3 after? ANd then remake the entire future trilogy? Hell no.

Yeah I loved all the Resistance games, people had different thoughts about 2 and 3 but I loved them. Thought 2 was better than the first and I got a big Half Life vibe from 3, which is probably why I loved that so much.

I read the post from the dev, but I still question it. I need more information. R:FoM sold in excess of 4 million copies, i.e. obviously he is referring to revenue, not sales. Naturally as the publisher, Sony owns the IP for both and would've incurred all the costs. So no overhead. Makes me wonder how a game that sells 2.5 million makes more revenue than one that does 4 mil? The tie-in movie was a dud domestically. Both games sold roughly the same amount in the 1st 18 months. I can only wager the film did better overseas and Insomniac had incentives tied to it.

In other words, the game was better than the movie and I would never turn down any more R&C games from Insomniac, they always have a great standard.

I suspect they began working on a sequel after the first game went gold.
They had the resources to work on Sunset Overdrive and Spidey concurrently while developing the first Ratchet game and smaller projects, they should have the resources to handle Ratchet 2, along with moving on to Spiderman 2 once the first game releases in September.

It would be great to see Insomniac go back to developing a new Resistance for PS4 or PS5 in the near future too.

Sony should just swoop in and buy Insomniac before Microsoft walks in with a big cheque and snags them up. With the upcoming Spiderman game coming out and from what was seen its looking to be a great title. I have always loved Insomniac game Resistance is my fave franchise from them.
