World of Goo Is The Highest Rated Game Ever?

World of Goo, the new WiiWare game from 2D Boy is now the highest rated game of all time, according to Metacritic. How could Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and LittleBigPlanet have been toppled by such a small game? SlapStic tries to determine this after the jump.

Anyone who thinks so obviously isn't a gamer. Hmm..Civilization, X-Com, Quake, Star Craft, Diablo, FF7, Super Mario Bros 3, Zelda Link to the Past, These are the games I think of when I think of best game of all time.

And just to be clear, this is the same metacritic who's fanboy users are DOWNRANKING LittleBigPlanet because it's PS3 exclusive? Almost 2000 users votes before the game is even released and it's user average is a 6.0? Yeah. I trust sites that work off an average. *eyes roll*

If you would so kindly take the time to READ THE ARTICLE, you'd find that the guy writing it is saying the exact same things as you guys. He points out that "if you were to believe Metacritic, it would be ONE OF the greatest games of all time." And even goes so far as to say that he's sure that the review score will go down once more reviews come in.

He can't help what got put on the N4G link to his article! Give him some slack! And read the article before commenting!

What would you say is the greatest game of all time? Super Mario World? The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time? Halo? If so, you'd be wrong, if you were to believe Metacritic.

So this is just strange. The new WiiWare game, World of Goo, which was released to fairly little hype this past Monday, is now apparently one of the highest rated games of all time, according to Metacritic. One look at the Metacritic page for the game will show that the game has an overall reviews average of 97, with three perfect scores and three that are in the '90s range. This puts the game in a position where it could actually take the title of "highest rated game of all time". I haven't bought WoG yet, but seeing as how there's a free demo for the pc version available here, there's really no excuse for anyone to miss out. It seems insane that this game would top the likes of Super Mario Galaxy, so I'm sure that once more reviews come in the score average will go down, (there are ALWAYS haters) but it's extremely interesting that this game has blown every other game released this year, including the oft-hyped LittleBigPlanet, completely out of the water score-wise.

Check back here for further impressions on the game soon. We'll report on whether or not the game is actually worth all this hype.

Why do you assume I didn't read the article? My comment is clearly venting at the fact that this is news in the first place? If it received 1 or 2 great reviews, even 100%s, would it be news? No. Because we all know the score is going to fall. 6 scores hardly constitutes an average representation of a Metacritic score. When the game has 20+ reviews, then that's respectable.

See, that isn't even true because those other scores are averaged over many, many scores. WoG's score is an average of 6 scores. That is an apples to oranges comparison. The first six reviews of LBP if I remember were all above 95 as well.

FOR THE RECORD, it would have been more productive to post the link to the IGN and 1UP reviews for this amazing game than to link to a 'filler' blog post that clearly will have no bearing by next week. If this game is still above 96 by next week, I'll eat my shoe.

It will lower to the 93 mark sooner or later. And as expectations go, reviewers would have been giving this game 8's, and 7's if it was 60 $s. It is 10 $s on wii, and 20 $s on steam and gives the game a benefit to reveiwers. It is by no means the best game of all time.

Metacritic faithful? What's wrong with Metacritic? They simply average out other sites/magazine's reviews. Just because a game ranks higher than MGS4 doesn't mean it's better overall, it means that for what it is, World of Goo is pretty amazing. I hate it when people compare games to each other.

How can you judge a meta score on six reviews? It's not even at the top right now: GTA4 (PS3): 98 with 63 reviews (or, 360: 98 with 85 reviews). Goo (Wii): 97 with 6 reviews. So... not the highest rated game ever at the moment. And it's only tied with SMG, which also has way more reviews. If only one reviewer rates a game and gives it a 100, do we start talking about how it's going to be the highest reviewed game evaaaaa~~r!!!11! Of course not, we wait until it has... more than one review. Metascores with six reviews are worthless.

The hottest article the other day was Wii Music getting a five out of ten from IGN. Is a game that gets a single bad review is more deserving of attention than a game that six out of six reviews said was pretty good?

Because it's a game that hasn't received any hype or much attention from people. Meanwhile, tons of people often spend their days bemoaning how there are no good videogames out for consoles. And others writing articles about things like "The Ten Best Games You Never Played"

I don't know whether it's the highest rated game ever according to site X or the extent that it has the chance to -- personally, I'm not concerned about game ratings as A. there are tons of highly rated games that I've not been too fond of and tons of low-rated games that I was pretty fond of and B. The words people write in a review about a game are more important to me than the number at the end of things-- but then again, I don't think that's actually even the issue here. I don't see a single person even *saying* that it's the highest rated game of all time, and the author of the article expressly doubts that it will be.

But surely, though, if there's a game that some people are using words like "Absolutely Phenomenal" to describe, isn't that worth *some* consideration?

Their are another 30+ sites that have given LBP very high ratings,it's actually above 96% from what I last heard.These seem to have been overlooked...A update is way overdue...

For example Edge magazine just gave LBP a 10. Anyways,not knocking World of GOO,it looks real good,interesting,but LBP should get a fair shake...

Six reviews is not enough.
Over time, it will probably fall to around a 94 or so...
While it is a fantastic game (I play it all the time), biases and opinions will always get in the way of reviews.
Look at Wii Music! 1up gave it an A-, Gamespy a 7.0, and IGN a 5.0!
Just one of the reasons it's hard to trust reviews.

Comparing, say 6 reviews at 9.9 w/ 30 reviews at, say, 9.5 is a whole mess of FAIL.

the article doesn't compare. It just points out, with a bit of humor added in, that at this point in time, World of Goo is right up there with the best when it comes to the review average. It never says that the game is the best game ever, or even better than any other game out there. It even says that "I'm sure that once more reviews come in the score average will go down" IN THOSE EXACT WORDS. Read the article, next time, please.

Wait.. where were all you people to make those same claims when it was MG4? I dont remember the majority of people being upset over it or bringing up how few reviews MGS4 had to get the top spot. It must be because its available on Wii. I am sure and MGS4 is prrof of this that most of you wouldnt be so upset if it was a PS3 game that was getting this kind of attention. I cant wait for the post that LBP is the greatest game with 10 reviews and watch some of the same people feel totally differently about metacritic and its way of doing things when its a game they like getting the good reviews.

MGS4 has 77 reviews... Over 25 of them at 100%.

LittleBigPlanet has 18 reviews...5 of them 100%.

A game is a game regardless of the system it's on but the point is, you need more than a handful of opinions before people will accept your game as one of the great ones.

Wii owners are just happy they are getting a third party game that isn't Shovelware. Enjoy it for all it's worth, I heard Nintendo doesn't have a very strong lineup going forward to Christmas.

I would say high 90s but i think its no GALAXY or ZELDA.. but definitly worth every penny and lots of fun.. highly polished.. if there was more levels i would expect it to be a disk based game..
