Why The Witcher 3 Is Still One of the Best RPGs Even After 3 Years

On the game's 3rd anniversary, we'd like to pay some tribute to The Witcher 3 and it's developer, CD Projekt Red and discuss why it's still one of the best open world games (not just an RPG), and why you need to play it ASAP, if you still haven't.

Completely agree. I'd go as far as saying that The Witcher 3 is one of the best games of all time.

joab7772589d ago

Yep. The next rpg to hold a candle to TW3 will be Cyberpunk 2077.

DVAcme2589d ago

I have no clue why you're getting downvoted so much when Cyberpunk 2077 will be just as epic as The Witcher 3 but with the setting of one of the best tabletop RPGs of all time.

Gatsu2589d ago (Edited 2589d ago )

It is the best, it used to be FFVII for me. 3 years is a short time though, so I don't think a article like this is really necessary.

stupidusername2589d ago

I agree. To me it might be the best game I've ever played only contested by TLOU and BOTW.

GamesMaster19822589d ago

Agree my second best game ever after Shenmue . That game just has too many memories for me for anything to ever beat . But there are other games right up there with the Witcher 3 for me also like The Last Of Us, MGS3, Silent Hill , Horizon and GOW to name a few.

RandoCommenter2589d ago

Is the best game of all time. Let the downvotes roll!

Great games don't stop being great as time goes on bud, it'll remain exactly what it is till the end of time, even though the bar will be 1000x higher in generations to come.

Psajdak2590d ago

I have better title: Why Chrono Trigger Is Still The Best RPG Of All Times Even After 23 Years?

Anyway, didn't know that 3 years is so long to deserve "even after" before it.

showtimefolks2590d ago

Bluepoint needs to remaster or remake it

sampsonon2590d ago

having a better experience playing God Of War, especially when t comes to the combat... its way better.

sampsonon2590d ago

true, but my point stands

Vegamyster2590d ago

sampsonon

Your point is irreverent to the topic of the article.

sampsonon2590d ago

God Of War is an RPG.

can tell that most, if not all the people here are pc gamers and never played God Of War or Horizon. sad

slayernz2589d ago

GOW is as much of an RPG as witcher in that you are playing the role of someone....a true RPG i want to be a mage/archer hybrid....not run around with a useless crossbow. witcher was a good action game, GOW is better

Vegamyster2589d ago (Edited 2589d ago )

GoW is a action game with RPG elements, it's not a full on RPG like the Witcher which has you shaping numerous stories with drastically different outcomes & scenarios ect.

slayernz

Your role in the Witcher can be drastically different depending on the player, you can try and be the good guy, neutral, greedy, bad ect.

slayernz2589d ago

vegamyster, cool so by your definition of an RPG then detroit become human is a full blown RPG as well? I choose the storyline and different outcomes, can be good/bad etc?

an RPG should be the above plus the ability to level my character as i see fit....if i want to be a rogue/mage/cleric/archer/warri or then i should be - not forced to the repetitive dull combat that is the witcher

Vegamyster2589d ago

"GOW is as much of an RPG as witcher in that you are playing the role of someone"

You implied Geralt is given no choices and your just following his story which he's not, everyone playing will have a different experience storywise when playing it.

"cool so by your definition of an RPG then detroit become human is a full blown RPG as well? I choose the storyline and different outcomes, can be good/bad etc?"

That wasn't the full definition, it was a response to sampsonon. RPG means role playing game, it can be someone you make yourself in games like TeS or a set character in games like the Witcher or Kingdom Come Deliverance ect, you're pretending to be someone else and make decisions ranging from the story to utilizing other skills, gear, stats.

Why am I not surprised to see GOW mentioned in almost every articles on this site.

riibhu2589d ago

Comparing apples to oranges eh? Typical n4g comment.

ArchangelMike2589d ago

But everyone knows that apples are better than oranges right? Riiight?

:)

Imalwaysright2589d ago

God of War is a hack n' slash. It just has RPG elements like many games out there the most known example being GTA5 but that doesn't make them RPGs.

@ slayernz Detroit is an adventure game.

GamesMaster19822589d ago

Whole different type of game bud nothing at all like each other . It’s like comparing telltales the walking dead to fifa 16 .

A switch 2 update might be a nice way to celebrate it for people who brought the switch 1 version

4Scarrs_Gaming34d ago

This is exactly what I was thinking too.

gigoran833d ago (Edited 33d ago )

It will be for a price. unfortunately not like the PS5 where a majority of them were free.

anast34d ago

Cool, can we get a controller sensitivity option for the PS5? Geralt going full sprint when I barely touch the controller is keeping me from playing this game a 3rd time.

I would have included the Uncharted games as well. Good list though.

Island would be #1 but that would be anything from Frontwing.

Haha it is not lost on me that two of the games in the top four were already novels before they were games

The Witcher 3 PC Optimized Settings: Next Gen Update & Ray Tracing Performance

Even 9 years after its release, The Witcher 3 remains one of the finest RPGs ever. Its detailed world and ingenious quest design have yet to be surpassed by another in the genre. The next-gen update released in late 2022 was a significant visual overhaul, adding ray-traced lighting, upscaling, and frame generation to an already pretty world.

Actually just picked this up yesterday on Steam, since it's $9.99 for the game and all the DLC. I've owned it for years on Playstation, but honestly never put a whole lot of time into it. Though I knew I had to play through it one day because I loved what I did play. It runs so buttery smooth on PC. Still a really beautiful game with everything maxed out settings-wise at 4K.

jznrpg183d ago

Damn man that’s a long ass wait for a game you were feeling good about. I beat it the first time over 9 years ago
