Why The Witcher 3 Is Still One of the Best RPGs Even After 3 Years

On the game's 3rd anniversary, we'd like to pay some tribute to The Witcher 3 and it's developer, CD Projekt Red and discuss why it's still one of the best open world games (not just an RPG), and why you need to play it ASAP, if you still haven't.

Agree my second best game ever after Shenmue . That game just has too many memories for me for anything to ever beat . But there are other games right up there with the Witcher 3 for me also like The Last Of Us, MGS3, Silent Hill , Horizon and GOW to name a few.

GOW is as much of an RPG as witcher in that you are playing the role of someone....a true RPG i want to be a mage/archer hybrid....not run around with a useless crossbow. witcher was a good action game, GOW is better

GoW is a action game with RPG elements, it's not a full on RPG like the Witcher which has you shaping numerous stories with drastically different outcomes & scenarios ect.

Your role in the Witcher can be drastically different depending on the player, you can try and be the good guy, neutral, greedy, bad ect.

an RPG should be the above plus the ability to level my character as i see fit....if i want to be a rogue/mage/cleric/archer/warri or then i should be - not forced to the repetitive dull combat that is the witcher

You implied Geralt is given no choices and your just following his story which he's not, everyone playing will have a different experience storywise when playing it.

That wasn't the full definition, it was a response to sampsonon. RPG means role playing game, it can be someone you make yourself in games like TeS or a set character in games like the Witcher or Kingdom Come Deliverance ect, you're pretending to be someone else and make decisions ranging from the story to utilizing other skills, gear, stats.

God of War is a hack n' slash. It just has RPG elements like many games out there the most known example being GTA5 but that doesn't make them RPGs.

The story is kinda slow to pick up, but once it picks up, it just keep going. Get to at least the barrón quest that things get real interesting.

The gaming world was awesome and beautiful, the only thing I didn't care for was the combat mechanics. I kept wishing it was more like Dark Souls in that regard. That may be because I was more used to DS controls though,

I didnt care much for witcher combat either, but it is ok. I tried to play dark souls game, but didnt like the combat either (many weapons, but the approach to beating any boss, is practically the same, and the difficulty is not as hard as people make it out to be). Im more used to Devil may cry, ninja gaiden, or bayonetta combat so DS games like combat do not appeal to me much, just personnel opinion.

I would love another dragon dogma though, great combat system.

It's good and I loved the combat but it started to get tedious towards the end.

I found myself skipping a lot of the cutscenes because I just wanted to get to the end of the game.

The best part of the game from what I remember was doing the hunts and using traps on the enemies/monsters. I had a blast doing those.

Probably one of the best games I have ever played. I did apl the contracts, almost all the side quests, both expansions and I even waited for the Xbox One X update which improved the visuals and shortended the load times. 188 hours and I wouldn't trade that time well spent for anything. It was a wonderful experience.

Loved the game and the combat. Yes the COMBAT too, I loved it. Coming from playing witcher 1 and 2 it was huge improvement especially considering the scope of the game and the non linear gameplay, the combat was much much better than any non linear RPG out there at the time,( a fact that most people forget to consider when shitting on this game's combat).

I find the combat has lots of variety with varying signs and traps and oils and stuff and the writing in the Witcher 3 is the best of any RPG. Every side quest was interesting and felt like more than a mindless fetch quest. The world felt large and had a good amount of variety too. God of War is great and all but the side quests felt like pointless busy work.
