What's up with The Witcher 3 patch 1.61 on PS4 Pro?

CD Projekt RED's The Witcher 3 has recently received yet another upgrade, with patch 1.61 bringing high dynamic range support to PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro, but there's a problem, the visuals have taken a hit.

draw distances for foliage and shadows are visibly dialed back on 1.61 - notably on the console's 4K output mode. This leads to more pop-in of grass - almost as if it's sprouting from the ground a few metres ahead, while more shadows visibly fade in ahead of Geralt during traversal"

A patch for downgrading visuals and no 60 fps option like the X1x version.

Wasabi2616d ago

Hopefully this is something that can be fixed by another patch further down the line, and not a downgrade that had to happen to enable HDR on the Pro.

Usually the impact from enabling HDR is pretty minimal, so probably just a bug and not a necessary downgrade.

TheDreamCorridor2616d ago

I’m sure that they’re looking into it.

bigmalky2616d ago

They already stated on Facebook a few days ago, that they were looking at the patch due to draw distance issues.

1nsomniac2616d ago

Again further evidence that the Pro is not what it was advertised as in the first place. Things like this really annoy me massively. I went to the trouble of selling my OG PS4. Then spending the extra money on the Pro & im regularly being disappointed by it. It’s just not worth the investment over the slim.

Muigi2616d ago

I completely disagree lmao!

Kyizen2616d ago

I feel it is amazing it is not a new console but a very nice improvment over OG ps4. It also isnt a $500 system

quent2616d ago

Well if its you're 2nd ps4 console that's $800 bucks you've spent

mandingo2616d ago

Rather pay the extra 100. Differences are pretty obvious. You get what ya pay for

DarkVoyager2616d ago

“Again further evidence that the Pro is not what it was advertised as in the first place.”

Take a look at Horizon: Zero Dawn and God of War. PS4 is a great console. CDPR just need to get their sh*t together.

quent2616d ago

No the game engine needs more cpu compute power both on the base and the pro can handle at these graphical settings, running on the same cpu mind you that only has. Slight frequency bump on the pro, so maybe get you're shit together and get better informed ?, otherwise I'd love to here of a proper comparisons of a game with Witcher 3's fidelity and scale performing better, its an openworld game not a walled off garden with fixed pretty wallpaper vistas in the distance you can't travel to or interact with

DarkVoyager2616d ago (Edited 2616d ago )

“No the game engine needs more cpu compute power both on the base and the pro can handle at these graphical settings, running on the same cpu mind you that only has. Slight frequency bump on the pro, so maybe get you're shit together and get better informed ?”

You have no idea what you’re talking about.

“its an openworld game not a walled off garden with fixed pretty wallpaper vistas in the distance you can't travel to or interact with“

So is Horizon: Zero Dawn and it looks just as good and runs better.

pinkcrocodile752615d ago

@DarkVoyager

Stop with the "you have no idea what you are talking about" comments and defend your point of view.

So, do as you have been asked and explain yourself

Razmiran2616d ago

"Not what it was advertised as"
It was advertised as a more powerful ps4, and thats what it is

CrimsonWing692616d ago

It’s still better than your OG PS4... Geezus if you’re that annoyed by the lack of power why don’t you just do PC gaming?

InTheZoneAC2616d ago

hdr has no effect on graphics like this, please keep uninformed opinions to yourself

boing12616d ago

You sound extremely bitter. I've seen your comments. Lighten up. It's not healthy.

Shineon2616d ago (Edited 2616d ago )

Same here I was going to skip this gen because it just dosent standout like previous console gens(my opinion)But when ps4 pro was advertised I thought now its the time to give 8th gen a shot,I should have bought more games for my alienware alpha instead wasting my money on slightly sharper visuals texture filtering and frames that try to hit 60 but cant paid online 8th gen is horrible

chaos-emeralds2616d ago

That's why I brought an XBOX ONE X. All the games run and look far better. Yeah Sony have their exclusives which look good, but on the whole I'd rather have every other game performing at their best on console. Witcher 3 does on xbox x

ILostMyMind2615d ago

I got confused. How was the Pro "advertised in the first place"?

Redlife2g2615d ago

Lol. Trolling at its finest. I seriously doubt you even have a ps4 to begin with or you have a shitty 4k tv.

mogwaii2616d ago

The PS5 better absolutely smash the x cause the pro is being outshined at every turn in terms of power, it just cant keep up performance.

Ricegum2616d ago (Edited 2616d ago )

Just picked up God Of War. It's the most stunning game out there on console by a large margin, followed by Horizon.

So basically your comment is rubbish. Also, perhaps play games and not pixels? You might enjoy gaming more.

mogwaii2616d ago

Cant hit 4k like it touted, the first party devs are amazing on ps4 but the x is a more capable machine sans games, pro is under powered compared. If i hadnt of bought a 4k tv i might not have bothered, by your rational we could just play old snes games cause power and tech doesnt matter right.

InMyOpinion2616d ago

God of War, Uncharted 4 & Horizon look better on a regular PS4 than anything running on an Xbox One.

pinkcrocodile752615d ago

Sorry but I disagree about HZD, this is after wtaching my youngest playing Destiny 2. it looks better than HZD graphically and with Art direction.

Father__Merrin2616d ago

Ps5 will smash x1x. In fact x1x has been a little bit of a flop Tbh. It's got nothing to show for it.

Even compared to the pro it's not night day difference with many games having to use the Eurogamer x200 x500 and even x800 zoom to notice anything.

pinkcrocodile752615d ago

PS5 with not be up again the XOX, it'll be up against the Xbox 2020.

I'm loving both the pro and the XOX, it's anything but a flop to me.

nucky642616d ago

what good is the power of the x if there aren't any "must have" games for it? I'm playing GoW4 on my launch ps4 and loving it.
high-quality games come first for me - console power a distant second.

It Shouldn't Take Expedition 33's Success to Remind Square Enix That Turn-Based Still Sells

TNS: Expedition 33 was the wake-up call Square Enix needed, telling it turn-based RPGs are still popular, but that shouldn't have been the case.

True, but if it does get it through their thick skulls, then that works.

Although, the Dragon Quest 1 + 2 HD remakes will be turn-based and (the worst kept secret) Final Fantasy IX remake should be turn-based I would imagine. Let's see if any newer games go turn-based too.

thorstein16h ago(Edited 16h ago)

DQIII HD Remake was turned based and very successful. Then there was a really obscure turn based game came Balder's Gate 3. I heard it might have done well.

Profchaos13h ago

I wouldn't be shocked if they switched ff to the vii remake combat system

PapaBop9h ago

It won't get through to them though, despite E33's success, they still won't risk going fully turn based for their big budget projects simply because they are still in the mindset that it needs to be action combat to appeal to the mainstream audience. I hope I'm wrong but don't underestimate just how stubborn Japanese execs can be

barom2h ago

Ya'll are hyping up Expedition 33 too much. Reminder that FF XVI sold 3 million in a week and it took Expedition 33 approximately a month to get to that (33 days to reach 3.3 million).

While it is true that Sqaure Enix has moved away from turn based games compared to how they were in the past, there is a good reason for it.

Older gamers will know this but during the ps2 era, we were flooded with turned based games from Japanese studios and this created a form of fatigue back then going into the next generation.

When Square released FF13, they received heavy criticism for making the game turned based like every other FF game and not doing enough to innovate. This is why they made FF15, FF7 Remake and FF16 have real time combat. It gave the series a fresh spin and has brought in new fans to the series.

I personally would be happy with either turned based FF or the real-time combat version we see today.

Shane Kim19h ago

Remake and Rebirth have "turn based" if you set it in the settings.

Lexreborn216h ago

Dang wish I saw your post before I made mine because we definitely feel the same way lol

Profchaos13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Yeah hit the nail on the head but its like ww2 games we get hundreds of them then a decade of nothing and people start missing them i think we're going to start seeing them return

Claire, dragon quest even yakuza have seen turn based return

andy8519h ago

Only need to look at their own game DQ 11 approaching 10 million to show there's a market. And that's not as big of a name as FF

Tacoboto19h ago

Another article about Expedition 33 and Square Enix and turn-based games? This is starting to sound like propaganda.

The game didn't sell because it's a turn-based game; it sold and is enjoyed because it's a really freaking good game that released completed at a good price without gamer drama attached to it. No Mtx, no wait-until-it's-patched, minimal bloat, a self-contained story, no multiplatform BS. Just a solid original game that absolutely nails what it intended to do.

Redemption-6418h ago

I was just about to say the same thing.

anast17h ago

This comment should have a 100 upvotes, at least.

CrimsonWing6918h ago

Maybe try actually listening to the fans who have supported the series for decades. This habit of ignoring your core audience just to chase people who were never interested in Final Fantasy in the first place makes no sense. And when that approach fails, doubling down on it is beyond baffling.

The battle system has never been the main reason non-FF or non-JRPG players stayed away. Gutting the series’ identity to chase a broader market doesn’t attract new players. It just alienates the loyal ones.

Keep going down this road and we’ll end up with Final Fantasy Fortnite abomination or a F2P Battle Royale game.. Oh wait…

My personal opinion:

Manufacturers and publishers have indeed inflated the industry.

From $700 million development costs for games like Call of Duty, to digital (store) prices for games and DLCs, online multiplayer fees on consoles (why can you play Helldivers 2 online for free on PC but not consoles?) or still preventing sell/lend digitally purchased games.

Sometime in the future, this bubble will collapse.

They should know better, but they just can't help themselves and suck even the last penny out of our wallets.

BeHunted2d ago

Because Sony knows people will be forced to pay those prices for single player and multiplayer games, not everyone prefers PC gaming. Sony also has a monopoly on PlayStation digital games. In 2019, they stopped allowing retailers and game key sellers to sell PlayStation digital games, making them available only through the official PlayStation Store

anast2d ago

The Dutch gov. wants a piece of the pie.

Eonjay2d ago

They should be suing the individual publishers increasing the prices to $80 instead of suing the store. There are plenty of publishers still selling game for like $50 with much success (like E33). But this proves that the publishers are the ones setting the prices.... so again nothing changes because they aren't even going after the main offender. How is suing Sony going to make Microsoft not charge $80 for the next COD? Sony being the number one store in the market doesn't mean that publisher have to charge us an arm and a leg. Again the industry is laughing at us because consumers never get real representation. Just these fake platitudes that are meaningless.

BeHunted2d ago

"How is suing Sony going to make Microsoft not charge $80 for the next COD"

Because Microsoft doesn't have a monopoly, I can purchase Call of Duty at a huge discount from CDKeys or other gaming retailers. The only way to purchase digital PlayStation games is through the PlayStation Store.

djl34852d ago

Weird, I swore GoW, Stellar Blade, Horizon Zero Dawn, TLoU, etc. were on the steam store....uh.....

BeHunted2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@djI3485

I'm talking about PlayStation games that you can only purchase on PlayStation. I can purchase Steam and Epic games from 3rd party retailers and key stores.

About time. There is zero fair reason why digitally distributed products that you cannot recoup any value when you want to dispose of them, should be priced higher than that of physical copies that entail all of the costs and the benefits of owning.
