Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings (PS4) Review | VGChartz

VGChartz's Thomas Froehlicher: "While entertaining enough as an RPG, Atelier Lydie & Suelle is overshadowed by its revolutionary predecessor and can't match its overall experience. The shallower content and lack of variety makes it a bitter entry for series fans, and the emphasis on story doesn't make up for this. The flurry of late DLC also shows a lack of care towards the final episode of the Mysterious trilogy. True, the game system is solid, combat is great and the soundtrack is nice, but I expected more from a title marking the 20th anniversary of the series."

Atelier has a lot of good ideas packed into a game stuck two generations back. I wish they'd slow down on releases and spend more than 6 months developing each sequel.

Yes, forgoing a dub isn't going to save the series at the rate they're going. This latest game is apparently on track to be the worst-selling in the series. They really aren't in a position where pulling an Ubisoft with annual releases makes sense. Heck, Ubisoft stopped pulling an Ubisoft and took their time with Assassin's Creed Origins and look how that turned out. That's a AAA title, and Ubisoft wised up and stopped with the annual releases. Fast-releases of niche Japanese titles that also have to be localized don't strike me as an investment destined to see nearly as much return as would be needed to sustain such a practice long-term.

I think he was making fun of a previous RPG of the year award given to Detroit from another site.

NecrumOddBoy2002d ago

Why is OCTOPATH TRAVELER missing from this list?

VideoChums2002d ago

It almost made it but didn't quite outrank any of the games that we ended up choosing. Incredible game, though!

ChasingTheSun2001d ago

Because it looks like an snes game.

crazyaejay2001d ago

That's a silly thing to say.

King_Noctis2001d ago

Ever heard of the term “art style”?

Segata2001d ago

SNES can run Unreal 4 Engine? Wow, it was way ahead of its time!

NecrumOddBoy2001d ago

Celeste is pixelated and won GOTY awards. OT is brilliant

It is funny for me that pokemon won a prize and not octopath. Pokemon is a really bad jrpg....

crazyaejay2001d ago

Perhaps that's why it won "Casual RPG of the Year"?

Octopath isn't a casual RPG.

Spenok2001d ago

Because it's a generic JRPG that get's rather repetitive and boring really quick. I'm at 15 hours and SLOGGING through it. I know several people who quit around that mark too.

The complete lack of interaction between characters and their chapter settings is really unfortunate.

The combat and world are pretty nice though. For what that's worth.

crazyaejay2001d ago

Exactly. It's the most overrated RPG of the year. Maybe they should have had a category for that.

Odd that Dragon Quest 11 didn’t make the cut. Did the author not play it? It’s quite good.

VideoChums2001d ago

The author of the article didn't decide which games would receive awards. The whole staff did. We reviewed DQXI and weren't blown away by it: https://videochums.com/revi...

Segata2001d ago

That is the most anemic list one could possibly conjure. Many of those suck. DQXI and Octopath are well above. Not to mention Torna the Golden Country.

crazyaejay2001d ago

None of the games "suck". You just didn't play them.

bluefox7552001d ago

Dragon Quest 11 was easily the best RPG this year, and it's not even on the list.

kalkano2001d ago

Not only that, it didn't even have any real competition. Valkyria Chronicles 4 was the closest, but still a distant 2nd.
