"On episode 9 of The Gamer's Society Podcast, I made a lot of statements about Monster Hunter World based on my experience from the beta..."
Yea you were pretty wrong and as a first timer to the series, myself, the beta sold me on this hard. I’m clocking 80 hours and I’m not bored of it... this is some of the most fun I’ve had gaming in a long time.
I'm so frustrated because I did not manage to play the beta more than 30 mins and I could not get into it. Is the game that good? I'm so tempted to buy it.
I'll be honest. It's a great game if you're already a fan. If you're not, it's a acquired taste type of game. Feels like an mmo, movements are heavy, etc. But... It's so atmospheric and you have to see what's next. I don't even have PS+, so i play alone. Still awesome.
Z501, Thanks for the reply. I did not play any other MH games, the beta was my 1st contact with the IP. That said, I love methodical games but I hate MMO grinding. Dont know maybe I'll risk it!
The beta had no chance in representing what this game is. Give it a try. I’m 45 hours in and I have so many personal goals for this game. It’s fun alone or with friends. It is time consuming and not really a pick up and play for 10 min game. You will see your weekends flee you.
Yeah the beta was a very limited representation of what this game is. For fans, the beta could really only be used to judge whether or not you like the combat and controls. It was missing literally everything else. But if you don't like grinding then it may not be for you. I spent 5 hours or so Saturday night hunting the same monster over and over again until I got enough of its materials to craft a full set of its armor. Granted, I didn't have to do that. I could have easily mixed it up and went and did other things in between. But I REALLY wanted that full armor. Thats kind of the glory of this game though. Rather than going on repeated Expeditions hunting the same monster, there are a number of other things I COULD have done instead. Story missions. Optional missions. Hunted different monsters to get items for a different weapon. Gathering missions. There's so much content and variety that no one should ever feel pigeon-holed into a grind if they don't want to.
I'd say rent it first or try it on your friend's, it's an acquired taste type of game after all. It's that kind of game where some will love it to death but some won't like it no matter how much they try it, and the beta really only let you try the combat part, which in itself has learning curves and you definitely need more than 30 mins to get a hang of.
My first MH was on PSP back when I was younger, I hated it so much I avoided the seires until now. This game is awesome! I already have 80+ hours in it. I think its worth a shot if it seems interesting enough to you.
@guys above Thanks for taking the time to give me your opinions guys, I will surely give it a try at some point!
Hi Ultranova. MH Vet here. The beta didn't convey the pointcof MH and that is starting from the beginning and working towards getting more gear and armour. Its a very rewarding series for this. If you go straight into the hunts with preset gear like the Beta and the previous versions of mh demos like mh3u etc had it kind of voids the main point of the game.
Game is ace, just gone beyond 100 hours and still so much to do and collect, it's epic..
I bought it used, and traded it in after 2 hours. Not for everyone.
If you didn't like it, don't let the opinion of others sway you into thinking that you should buy it. If you can't help it then buy it, but make sure you buy it because YOU want to. If you don't like it trade it in. If you like it, play the hell out of it.
Played the beta, didn't liked it. Still bought it due to the mass of positive reviews 100 hours into the game .. Go for it buddy
Just buy it. No regrets.
@Software_Lover When I ask people's opinions on a game I find interesting it does not mean I will be "convinced" by what they say. Its called getting informed and what better way to do this than asking fellow gamers who actually played the game and do not have any agendas while criticing it (clicks, ads etc)? That said, I really want to play this since combat reminds me of Dark Souls (my all time fav game series) but I do not have the time to grind for 100 hrs before I feel I've completed most of everything. I'm kinda OCD on doing as much as possible in every game I play while it keeps me interested. I hope this clears things up for you. Thanks though.
You have to know if the game is for you, and to do so is for you to know what kind of games you like and dislike. If you are unsure if the game is for you there is still the ability to research the game through youtube videos to gain a better understanding of how it plays. Btw the game isn't easy as the learning curve is big, but once you get it you become addicted.
Games that focus on gameplay above all else when good, will always be the most fun games you'll ever play.
Agreed.... and I love this game! But I’d have to add that for what the game is.... it launched at the perfect time, I will never understand why they think we only buy games around the end of the year.. just imagine if the launched this late last year..
I appreciate focus on gameplay, but the sluggish combat of this series really should have been improved years ago. I don't know why everyone likes it.
I enjoyed the beta a lot and was worried about the final game being too repetitive. I also hated the super short timers, but after a few answers and reviews I bought day 1 and have enjoyed it every time. Definitely one of the greatest games this gen.
I think the time was shortened for the beta. In the full game I have yet to come anywhere close to running out of time hunting a monster.
indeed. most take 15 minutes, sometimes 20ish. The exception was late in the game when a friend and I had to 2 man one of the monsters. Someone came in at the last 5 minutes but that one took us 40 minutes. Overall though, having 50 minutes for each monster is more than enough time. Not to mention it's usually incredibly easy to fill up a team with an SoS flare should you want help.
The game sucks! I already traded it in!
Sounds like someone wasn’t good enough
Idk. Im pretty good at MH but my main issue was the grind. Is that an issue with this one? I just recall spending 4+ hours on Tri grinding the same monster trying to get a gem with like a 2% drop rate and i just wasn't feeling the RNG-based game design.
You should sell your XB.
What was the last quest you did and with what weapon?
Lol this is what people do when they are bad at monster hunter.
The repetition doesn't sit well with a lot of people and the thin story doesn't give much motivation to play. You have to be really down with that kill monsters to get a new weapon to kill monsters loop.
@Scatpants That’s a totally fair point. For the sake of discussion, I would argue that a lot of games are fairly repetitive but maybe hide that fact a little better. I hate doing the example thing because I will probably offend someone but GTA games are mostly repetitive. They hide it a little better with new faces and scenery. To your point though, games like GTA have a good story to latch on to when you are over the drive here and kill him sameness. You swayed me a little bit and I apologize if my first comment was a little strong/mean.
Died alot perhaps, there's one rage quitter. The MH games can certainly do that to people and to be honest those are the only types I've ever known get rid of the game, those kind of players which think they should be able to hack n slash and deliver one hit death blows that fail so hard..
I get why. It's basically the same thing over and over. It's a very rinse and repeat game. Im bored of it too.
Couldn't agree more. I bought it day one and was so excited. It seemed exactly like the PSP one I played ten years ago. Chasing a dumb monster around the map. I didn't like the clunky combat but was willing to overlook it. I really tried to like it too. Just not for some people I guess. Kinda irks me that people love it so much though... It means they'll make more. I wish someone would make a serious style monster hunting game oriented towards adults. The idea is so appealing.
I brought it played for a couple of hours then traded it in. Really did not like this game but that just my opinion.
first gow now mhw, yeah games are great ;)
funny the site has a wallpaper adv of MH... good game though.
My experience with it: I played it at PSX. I was a bit intrigued. I did not buy at launch. I bought it a week ago used at gamestop for One X. Played it, has really pretty graphics but the frame issues are not so great even in frame rate mode. What made me return it is the issue with matchmaking. I was never able to get into a game even though I seen my other friends playing. Ticked me off. Fast forward a week and i went back in to Gamestop amd bougjt it brand new for ps4. The graphics seem washed out a bit and not as vibrant but the framerate was much better in framerate mode. I had to do the opening tutorial again and instantly I was in an online game. The fact that I went through all this trouble just shows how much fun the game really is. I wouldnt have done this unless it was worth it.
Might want to change your ps4 display to output RGB full and make sure the input of your tv is set to RGB full as well as most TVs have individual settings for every TV input. MHW doesn't looked washed out at all on my pro, but maybe you have your colors way too saturated on the Xbox so you're used to that.
Same settings, all my other HDR games look fine. You cant get full RGB while you are playing anyway. Itll just switch to YUV.
@jj, also match your black level on your TV. On my LG if it's set to light every game is washed out.
So many lies! How is that according DF the Xbox one x had the most fps is all tests? In fact in framrate mode the Xbox one x is a good 10+ fps ahead of the PS4 Pro so how is yours so different? I think you have a normal Xbox that will make sense
The kids disagree with DF I thought they were god around here 🤭 oh I guess they use to be thats right 😂😂😂 28514;
It is ahead but it will drop more frames which is more noticeable. I have seen that video but you cant believe that its true for every part of the game. I have a One X. You're just a DF groupie.
More fps and looks better 👍😂 So funny DF can not be trusted now all of a sudden 😂
What framerate issues? I have a regular PS4 and its fine. The only dip I cam ever see is with flying creatures that are way off in the distance. Their wings are very jerky when flapping. But that is only with flyers that are way off in the distance and are in no way effecting anything around my character.
Monster hunter is such a great game, so much fun and beating those monsters is awesome. NOOB in the series here!
It's the most boring grindfest possible. But most people love boring grind fests.
4 player co-op with a bunch of mates or even randoms is boring? Someone is doing it wrong.
Jack ass comment above.
First time MH player myself, and this game has blown me away. I'm only 20 or so hours into it but I'll definitely be putting in more. I was worried that doing most missions solo would be overly difficult but so far I've not had any trouble. I'm guessing the post game content is where the need for co-op becomes apparent!
No, not really. As you make progress you also upgrade weapons and armors. It’s all about seeing what the monster does after all. The game scales difficulty to match the amount of players fighting it regardless. So difficulty wise should be the about the same.
Agreed. The only thing that bugs me with monster Hunter is the reward money can get split 4 ways, yet they make the game tougher when people join, makes no sense and I'm constantly skint lol..
Assignments are pretty easy, there's some tough optionals, arenss, and events though.
I put about 5 hours into it and I honestly just can't get into it. It's not a bad game by any means, just not my cup of tea. Monsters not really having any sort of health bar is kind of irritating.
Why does a health bar make or break the game for you? You go off visual cues and the indicator on the radar. I'm a first time player with around 75 hours in the game because it's more than a mindless hack n slash. There's little details you have to pay attention to, it may feel overwhelming at first but the pace at which you're introduced to certain things is perfect.
It honestly wasn't overwhelming, I just didn't have any motivation to kill some random big monster after I had hacked at it for 3 minutes, only for me to chase it and hack it for another 3 minutes, then once again until it finally just died. I didn't feel motivated to return to the base to pick up a similar quest and go back out to do it again. Like I said, I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just not for me.
MH is fine on my Xbox one as I'm sure it is on the other version on all consoles. Yeah there is a bit of sillyness at times getting into online but it does work, SOS. Flares work most of the time and creating online sessions works a treat, so to inviting.
I haven't been able to go online in days. Spectrum ISP 5Ghz 100mbps. 5.50 Beta 2.
You're on wifi? Go cat6/7
That has nothing to do with it.. besides I can't where my PS4 is. I have an AC1900 router and PS4 Pro, no point in going wired, I get the same speeds and latency, and power line Ethernet is too wonky.
I get that 5038 MW1 error, no matter how I try, can't connect to another match.
Nevermind, it's a Nat Type 3 issue.
More games should follow suit on no health bars, it's about time gamers actually played games without them and used there brains and eyes. Health bars should of gone out of fashion along time ago..
I like it it's a great game I'm around 45hrs in but I'm beginning to see the amount of farm and grind it's going to take to reach the upper Hunter levels in end game and I'm just not that committed to it. After putting in 1500 hours or better in original Destiny I promised myself that I would never ever again do that in another game because it made me miss out on so many other great games that I'm still trying to catch up on my backlog. Plus I'll be real I've noticed that the newer monsters I've unlocked are reskins of older monsters. I saw the DLC monster coming and it's just a different color reskin of the Anjanath. Great game and well worth the $60 but too farmy and grindy with reskins for me to wanna sink 100s of hours into especially with so many great games coming this year.
Unlike destiny, they're not re-skins as they actually have different attacks.
Having a blast with friends on xbox i already clocked 102 hours and still going :)
Best game this gen!
I get people might have a problem with the “grind” but having 30+ different monsters to tackle, the argument for repetitive is null and void.
