How Role Select Could Fix Competitive Overwatch
Role-select has been a hotly-debated topic in the Overwatch community, some clamoring for it to become mandatory when solo-queuing in competitive. Others argue that role select goes against the fundamental nature of Overwatch – hero switching and creative play.
However, competitive remains reliant on a dice roll when it comes to team mates. How many one tricks will be put into your team? How many Lucio players, how many DPS, how many tanks? If you’re fortunate enough to get placed with team members who can flex and perform multiple roles well, or you happen to have a lottery win of a 2 – 2 – 2 mains in your queue, your match is essentially won for you before you even leave spawn. Woe to the team who gets multiple support heroes and no tanks in their roster, or all DPS and no other role. Woe is the team who plays with the Symmetra one-trick who refuses to play anything else regardless of team composition or map.
