Kind of hoped after the reception they'd just rename this something else. All this time waiting for a sequel to Beyond Good and Evil yet this is what we get...a prequel nobody asked for with a story that's not nothing to do with Jade and seems like a new IP.

SegaGamer2329d ago

From my point of view, it's Beyond Good and Evil in name only. I'm seeing zero similarities to the first game. I don't know how any fan of the first game can even be slightly excited for this one. We aren't getting Beyond Good and Evil, we are getting a new ip that is using the Beyond Good and Evil name to give itself a boost.

Bigpappy2329d ago (Edited 2329d ago )

It looks king of interesting to me. Hope it turns out to be as explorative and varied and the first. I always leave the direction of a franchise to developers. They are the once with the creative minds that made BG&E so good in the first place. I am not going to complain before I get to play it. Looking forward to the finished work.

wonderfulmonkeyman2329d ago

Hey, even if it's only a prequel that doesn't have much relevence to the future of the story, at least it's being given more of a chance than Metroid Prime: Federation Force was given, by its fans.
Granted, this looks like a much more well-thought-out kind of experiment than Federation Force was, but still...

I hope this turns out to be a sleeper hit; I'm honestly not too enthused by direct prequels as far as story-based games go.
I like the idea of advancing a game IP's plot more than the idea of explaining what led up to said plot. Backstories that can't be told in the proper main story line of the original game would be better off left to either a real life book, or explained through side missions and stuff in the original game.

Thankfully, some games do just enough with their prequels to make them seem/feel like whole new tales unto themselves, which really helps make them more entertaining.

I guess the short of it is, I hope this does well, but I REALLY want a proper sequel to BG&E instead, eventually.

Five Big Games Still Lingering Somewhere in Development Hell

This year promises to be a big year for gaming, and it will definitely be one of the greatest if any of these big MIA projects finally made it into gamers' hands.

Pretty sure Silk Song and Dragon Age are going smoothly. The other 2 can be assumed to be quietly cancelled knowing their publishers and Metroid will most likely be shown off this year.

Michiel1989102d ago

Dragon Age going smoothly??? Directors leaving, people leaving in general, terrible working conditions....not sure how you define smoothly.

VincentVanBro4d ago

lol Dragon Age development has been anything but smooth

Chocoburger102d ago

I remember in 2017 when Nintendo showed off the Metroid Prime 4 logo, and some Nintendo defenders claimed "Just because they only showed a logo, doesn't mean that's all they've worked on for the game."

As history has proven, they were wrong. Nintendo showed off a logo back in 2017 because that's literally all they had.

-Foxtrot102d ago

I think Beyond Good and Evil 2 can stay there unless they are going to just rename it to a new IP

DOMination-102d ago

Pretty sure BG&E2 is dead at this point - along with the other game Ancel was working on before he left - I think it was called WILD. Anyone remember that from a PS conference years ago?

Dreadwolf isn't in development hell anymore and is finally getting its reveal in the summer - since 2016 the game has been scrapped and restarted three times but its been going pretty well since the last reboot when EA finally allowed BioWare to just get on with making a single player game.

I'm not sure Perfect Dark is in development hell either - like it could be but we haven't really heard much to suggest either way - imo they just showed the trailer off when the game was still in pre-production. Xbox were desperate for anything and this is all they had at the time. And the reason we haven't heard anything since is just because it's in normal development and games take 5 years to make. The help from a support studio was typically overblown on N4G because nearly every game has this.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Is Now the Most Delayed AAA Game Ever

Ubisoft's action-adventure even beats Duke Nukem Forever which previously was the title with the longest wait between a game being first announced and it actually being released.

x_xavier_x571d ago

I understand that the original game is held in high esteem by some passionate fans. I tried to get into it on several occasions and I just lost interest after a few hours of gameplay.

Abracadabra571d ago

Beyond Good & Evil was a great game at the time... but, like most older games, it didn't age well. Gameplay and graphics are subpar by today's standards.

Wouldn't mind if they made a Remake with updated gameplay and graphics. Game turns 20 next year...

x_xavier_x571d ago (Edited 571d ago )

I feel the same way about the original Psychonauts. I gave it a shot every few years, and it just wasn't for me.

MadLad571d ago

I find it still very playable by today's standards, honestly.

But opinions are opinions.
I just feel it actually aged well.

Godmars290570d ago

Its was great middleware that someone thought would make for an even greater AAAA title.

For some reason...

0hMyGandhi570d ago

Beyond Good and Evil aged just fine, as did the original Psychonauts. Visually, sure, a bit rough (though both have a wonderfully refreshing art style that more than makes up for actual "visual fidelity".)

I'd say that you really need to give both of these games another shot. Psychonauts is one of the most original and utterly creative games I've ever played, and it's also one of the funniest as well. Psychonauts 2 was even better, and basically, a (well made) Pixar movie brought to life.

In all honesty, don't just play games and try to like them if you don't actually like them. It's perfectly fine to have your own tastes! we tend to use a tremendous amount of hyperbole when referring to games that are slightly older, and we speak only from memory, which *can* be deceiving.

I will say that I replayed the first Psychonauts again in the last few months, and still adore it. But like I said, this is all subjective.

poppatron570d ago

I gave up on the og psychonauts after about 5 or so hours because like many many people those weird sluggish controls just got the better of me while trying to get through some of the more testing platforming and swinging around parts.

BgaE I got way further in enjoyed, I think I saved it off in the end because something I was more interested in came out. The sequel looks like a completely different type of game in genre and scope, to the point it looked pretty ground breaking I thought. I’m still super low key excited for it, although I wouldn’t be surprised if next time it reared it’s head it looked very very different.

EazyC570d ago

It's an age thing. I'm always reminded of this when I whip out the old PS2, the vast majority of 3D games from the '00s just haven't aged well.

Good-Smurf570d ago

I have same feeling over Code Veronica X fans loved it to bits while I'm came out of it confused and disappointed.
I never played Beyond Good & Evil and I might get give it a try soon.

Cancel it or change the name for all I care. This isn't the Beyond Good & Evil I fell in love with.

Si-Fly571d ago

Weird take. Whilst we didn’t get proper gameplay reveals it looked very much how I would want BG&E to look now.

-Foxtrot571d ago (Edited 571d ago )

So you wanted an ambitious open world Beyond Good and Evil sequel that gameplay differs from the original and has no clear vision so far if it's a prequel (which no one wanted) or a sequel (with an evil Jade where she's not the main character, which no one wanted)

All people wanted was a full on sequel that's a platformer and continues Jades story.

-Foxtrot571d ago

Exactly

It's not Beyond Good and Evil

They had an idea for an ambitious new IP and thought it would sell better or had more of a safety net if they slapped on a franchise name.

isarai570d ago

Seriously, has absolutely nothing to do with the original other that a loose cameo.

CrimsonWing69571d ago (Edited 571d ago )

How hard is it to make a game like the original? Nobody wanted anything different and these idiots just insist on trying to make something completely unrelated AND they don’t even know what to make! So, yea, here we go with the delays. Ubisoft can be such an obnoxious publisher/developer.

InklingGirl571d ago

Just leave it alone, the original is a classic lets not ruin it.

Exvalos571d ago

I'm more worried about how fast that time went i still remember it being announced there is no way that was that many years ago NO WAY!

Beyond Good And Evil 2 Starts External Playtesting

Although Beyond Good and Evil 2 has had its problems, it has officially been confirmed by Ubisoft that it is still in active development.

Terry_B656d ago

It never looked like a Beyond Good and Evil game even.

TheExecutioner655d ago

Do you know that first game came out 2003 by the time this game released i would be probably 40.
Now majority of gamers who played the first one are not going even bother playing now.

This game is a refreshing and wants to be more appealing to all gamers.

Concertoine655d ago

I just don’t see a reason why it cant be a new IP in that case.

Terry_B655d ago

..and? do you think it looks like a game that appears to all gamers? Unlike the first part it gets mostly negative feedback, even from people that never played the first game.

Michiel1989654d ago

@Terry they also didnt play the 2nd.....

maelstromb654d ago

If the devs were smart, they'd launch a remake of the original a few months before the sequel to get the fans who have loved the original amped again and to also introduce it to a new generation to get them excited for what's to come. Seems like a win-win to me.

isarai655d ago

Looks like an awesome game, but it has nothing too do with BGE1, or anything to do with what fans wanted.

Yi-Long655d ago

If it would have been a SP action-adventure game like the first one, I would have been excited.
