I Wish I Had Played SOMA in 'Safe Mode'

If you're thinking of picking up SOMA, don't be like me and think that you need to play it on 'normal mode' to truly appreciate it.

If there is no danger or no challenge then it's not a game. Wouldn't it better to be a film/ short film.

I think you solve puzzles and explore and pick stuff up etc etc.

Like prey - the core of the game is amazing, but if there was like 1/100th the amount of combat, I think it would have been a better game.

I respectfully disagree, there's a lot of games out there that have no combat or challenge but are still worthwhile experiences, Look at the Walking Dead games, it's mostly QTE with no lose state other than just starting over but still worth experiencing as a game. I don't think there's ever really any "danger" in games, you lose and you just start before you died or respawn.

Not to mention tons of puzzle games out there also exist. Games are meant to be interactive experiences, which separates them from movies in the first place.

Maybe it's just comes down to preference. I do understand your point. But I would hate all game to have a safe mode. Maybe I'm wrong and that would stop people wanted to play.

SOMA was always a walking sim poorly disguised as a horror game. I felt that the enemies added absolutely nothing to the experience (they're barely even referenced in the story) so i'm OK with cutting them out, it's probably a better game for it.

I generally prefer challenging games too, but there's nothing wrong with the occasional walking sim, and I don't think that the feeling of playing a game like Journey could be recreated in a film/ short film.

Best story ever written for a game

I really want a VR mode. I have bought the game, but I have it in my backlog just in case!

mixelon2747d ago

A lot of the effects would need a lot of work to be VR friendly, I don’t think they’ll bother. :(

I might try it with vorpx though and likely feel ill as a result.

G20WLY2747d ago

^please does at things I don't want to hear 😔 I know you're right though. Oh well, I've been itching to play it, so I guess I'll get to it.

...you better hope they don't patch it as soon as I finish it 😁

GamesMaster19822747d ago

I played it the way it was meant to be played, not this safe mode crap. Game wasn't difficult at all, great story and got all trophy's in one playthrough.

Jaypi032747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

Personally, I think the game was fine on normal difficulty, but I understand there are people who probably can't handle the scares for personal reasons, maybe past trauma, heart conditions, etc. so it's cool that there's options for people who want to just enjoy the good story without having to watch someone play it on youtube or something.

Options are never a bad thing.

Very safe list of horror games. I would argue that Amnesia Machine for Pig was not that great. Dark Descent was much a much better game.

Far better games have been released in this genre (Dead Space Remake, Alien Isolation, Alan Wake 2 etc).
