Glad to see Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn up for so many awards, including Game of the Year. 2 of my favorite games this year.

TheGamersGhost2503d ago

I expected Horizon Zero Dawn but, for some reason, Persona 5 surprises (and delights) me. Also glad to see Hellblade walking away with 5 nominations.

sammarshall1022503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Horizon is a good game (finished it twice) but it doesn't belong on a GOTY list Nier: Automata should be on this list

With that being said if GG works on making the open world more lively and work on the side quest then Horizon 2 should be awesome.

nowitzki20042503d ago

@sam You forgot to add IMO.

sammarshall1022503d ago

@Nowitzki yeah I did but I really don't believe Horizon does anything special, I think it would've been a lot better without its enormous but dull open-world

In fact, I think Horizon would've been better off as a linear game its pacing would've been better too

darthv722503d ago

My vote goes to Horizon for GOTY. It's fresh, new and adventurous.

Razzer2503d ago

lol.....of course Horizon Zero Dawn belongs on the list. smh

morganfell2503d ago

"...it doesn't belong on a GOTY list "

Too bad a truckload of fans AND developers disagree with you.

andrewsquall2503d ago

@sammarshall102 Lol I'm going to call LYING on that. You didn't think it was all that but you "finished it twice"??? Get out of here with that.

How about this, its on here because even somebody who apparently doesn't even like the game put in the time and completed it twice............ and its not even a game with massive consequential choices in its story either to warrant a second playthrough within 9 months.

Well done Guerilla ^_^

sammarshall1022503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

@Morganfell There's also a truckload of fans that think Horizon is very overrated

Go to this exact thread topic on Gaf and you'll see people that praise Horizon but a lot of people think it doesn't deserve GOTY also

+ Graphics
+ enemy design
- redundant side quests
- bland open world
- bad melee combat

I did enjoy fighting bellowbacks and tramplers though

Nier: Automata is the better game in every way besides graphics and Nier is a good looking game too

sammarshall1022503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

@Andrewsquall I could've beaten Horizon 5 or more times with how many hours I've put into it but all I do in the game is search for Tramplers and Bellowbacks because I like seeing them explode when you hit their vulnerable parts

I often play Horizon trying to convince myself that it's this game of the generation but it's just not

The Witcher 3 probably had more to do with me not loving Horizon TBH

I've put double the amount of hours into The Witcher 3 and soon Nier: Automata which I've also finished

Razzer2503d ago

“There's also a truckload of fans that think Horizon is very overrated“

Yeah....mostly Xbox fans. There a lot of people who think Zelda is overrated. Including me. But it still deserves to be on the list.

UCForce2503d ago

@sammarshall102 You are not helping here, buddy.

AspiringProGenji2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Lol “Bad melee combat.” Whay combat? Horizon didn’t revolve around melee mechanics. It was just optional. It was all about the bow and mobility which you didn’t bother to mention.

Cheery pick all you want. There’s no way you can troll it mate l. Horizon is goty material

Steveoreno12503d ago

@sammarshall102 you played a different game than I did....twice

P_Bomb2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Hellblade for audio and performance.
Nier for score.
Nioh for action.
Edith Finch for impact.

Yakuza 0 deserves a narrative nomination. THe amount of interwoven and good story/characters dwarf the other nominees.

@sammar
Well, I platinumed both and am still playing Horizon via DLC. Nier’s 3 playthroughs across predominantly the same areas were a grind and dimmed it’s shine somewhat. If you found Horizon’s open world bland, Nier’s seasonless empty shoulda killed ya.

2503d ago
spreadlove2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Morgan,

More than a truckload of fans buy CoD too every year and pay for micro transactions.

sammarshall1022501d ago

@Razzer I'm a fan of both consoles and Horizon isn't that good, sorry

sammarshall1022501d ago

@Aspiring GG included Melee combat so therefore they intended on players to use it. Are you trying to say you play Horizon without using any melee attacks? Lol

+ Show (15) more repliesLast reply 2501d ago
-Foxtrot2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

I hope Horizon gets some love when they announce some of the winners...a great game, with a good concept (robo dinosaurs..come on) and it's a brand new IP.

We wanted new IPs...we got one. Not saying it deserves the love just on that merit but you have to give it credit for taking a risk in today's industry.

"PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds"

GOTY...why? Wasted spot no?

UCForce2503d ago

GG deserves to get a lot of credits.

-Foxtrot2503d ago

Same

Although the voice acting picks...I'm torn

Ashly Burch or Claudia Black

UCForce2503d ago

Me ? I vote Ashly Butch. She did phenomenal job play as Aloy.

Ducky2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Not sure why PUBG got a GOTY nomination when it isn't even released yet.
Would've liked to see NieR there instead.

Still, 2017 has been a phenomenal year, and it's nice to see so many single-player games on the GOTY list.

andrewsquall2503d ago

Lol I think the big question is why PUGB when it isn't even properly finished and released lol.

jacksmith562503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

would not say pbug is a waste of a spot it pushed the genre in a creative way for that it deserves to be in the spot i prefer zero dawn to it but it should be recognized as a contender at least

Razzer2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

"”PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds"

GOTY...why? Wasted spot no?“

More like sponsored spot. It has mixed reviews on steam and isn’t out of beta. This is just silly.

But thankfully there is no single GOTY. Secondnexus.com (whoever they are) can compare this to the oscars, but it is far from it. There is no equivalent in gaming and multiple games will garner GOTY awards, like always.

Chexs19902503d ago

PUBG isn't even eligible for a GoTY, it's just weird. Since when can early access games be GoTY? :P
It's not even a full game yet, so yes, I agree with you dude, it's just a waste of space.

Prince_TFK2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

PUBG’s spot should have been given to Divinity Original Sin 2.

+ Show (6) more repliesLast reply 2503d ago
WickedLester2503d ago

It's probably Zelda's or Mario Odyssey's to lose for GOTY. But I'm glad to see the nods for Horizon and Persona 5.

AKS2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

I expected Nier: Automata to be treated similarly to how the Academy Awards treats David Lynch's best movies, and that's pretty much the case. Wow, we see something good seemed to have went on here but WTF did you just put us through?! Have a few nominations for artistry so we can focus on something safe and easily understood instead.

Themba762503d ago

and i have yet to finish either of them this is why i dont need an xbox one x

mafiahajeri2502d ago

I wanna see what Rocksteady have up their sleeve.

rezzah2501d ago

Playing Persona 5 now and it is amazing. Already platinumed Horizon but so far Persona is more enjoyable (that soundtrack!)

A lot of first party and third-party exclusives are on this list from Nintendo and Sony. Not that many third-party multiplatform games on the list.
Best Anticipated Game list.

The Last of Us Part II
Red Dead Redemption II
Monster Hunter World
Marvel’s Spider-Man
God of War

Best Action / Adventure Game

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Assassin’s Creed Origins
Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Mario Odyssey
Horizon Zero Dawn

TheGamersGhost2503d ago

I'm actually have a rather difficult time thinking of an exclusive Microsoft game that launched this year. Halo Wars 2? Was there anything else?

Nyxus2503d ago

Cuphead and Forza 7 (although they're also on PC).

Toby_19812503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

That's because Microsoft rely's mostly on third party multiplatform games now.

Ashlen2503d ago

@Nyxus

Cuphead isn't a Microsoft studio game. MDHR is a fully independent company.

Eldyraen2503d ago

He asked for MS exclusive, didn’t specify MS developed.

Cuphead will probably win art direction but doubt it will win anything else. Maybe Independent or score though.

Forza is iffy but always a contender for its main category. A couple good competitors in racing scene depending on platform.

Nintendo or Sony have heavy hitters for exclusives. MS didn’t do much this year worth noting other than helping Cuphead, release yet another Forza and of course the X—which would lose to switch in a hardware competition I have to imagine even with power difference.

Halo Wars as strategy game is a joke almost. I’d easily vote Mario+Rabbids over it and then there are more traditional real-time competition (and xcom Expansion).

Liqu1d2503d ago

@Eldyraen He said "Microsoft game". That means a game from MS, Cuphead isn't a MS game in any sense. It's independently developed and it's even available on Steam.

_-EDMIX-_2503d ago

@Nyxus- So none? I mean....they are on PC, doesn't that mean XONE had basically zero?

TheGamersGhost2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

I did mean any exclusive game for the Xbox, my apologies on my wording.

That's pretty telling, though, that even with the broader scope, the same three titles have been mentioned. I loved my Xbox for a while, but the fact that Microsoft has been really lacking on development and third-parties aren't even producing exclusively for it, I may have to make a switch soon - or go back to PC.

*edit* I haven't used this site in a while - is there a glitch when it comes to replying? I couldn't directly reply to anyone in this thread.

leoms2503d ago

Cuphead is xbox's saving grace and it's not even exclusive

-Foxtrot2503d ago

I'd like to see a new IP win aswell...but considering Zelda and Mario are on there I doubt it's going to. Shame

UCForce2503d ago

Ugh, you are right about that. If HZD won GOTY 2017 (which is impossible), that would show the gaming industry that making new IP can be worth it.

Neonridr2503d ago

@UCForce - pretty sure the game has sold extremely well and was reviewed very highly. Will easily win best Playstation game of the year hands down. Just because it doesn't win the big award at the end of the year, that doesn't mean that it was a wasted effort. Here is a potential new series in the making thanks to GG taking a risk.

-Foxtrot2503d ago

Yeah it might send a message out to the gaming industry

"HOLY F****** SHIT...a brand new AAA game just won against Zelda and Mario. Maybe our studio should be taking more risks and doing things like GG which are completely different genre wise to our last game"

Imalwaysright2503d ago

It should have a best new IP category.

TekoIie2502d ago (Edited 2502d ago )

@foxtrot + UCForce

Wouldn't make a difference. The award has absolutely no influence when it comes to industry trends.

-Foxtrot2502d ago

zivtheawesome2503d ago

Yea me as well. Sadly probably the votes will go for Zelda. Will be hilarious if Zelda and Mario's votes will be so split it somehow wins though lol. (Most hilarious case is if both Zelda and Mario votes are split and horizon and persona splits and so PUBG will somehow wins xD, although this'll also be pretty sad.)

Neonridr2503d ago

I think Zelda and/or Mario rightfully deserve as much GOTY consideration as you feel Horizon does. There is no sad outcome if any of those 3 titles win as they all deserve it for various reasons.

ninsigma2503d ago

Hmmm nah it's pretty sad if Zelda wins. Painfully average game. Mario and Horizon on the other hand both deserve a good shot at it (haven't played the rest of em so can't judge). I think, even though horizon is my favorite game this year, Mario probably deserves it more simply because it's extremely imaginative with amazing gameplay that keeps adding as you go along while horizon uses alot of standard open world principles.

zackeroniii2503d ago

what about B A T T L E F R O N T 2 ?

WelkinCole2503d ago

I'm sure Zelda will win but my choice for GOTY would be Horizon. That said I haven't played Mario Odyssey yet.

TheGamersGhost2503d ago

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Odyssey wound up taking it. It's definitely going to one of the Nintendo titles, though.

Nyxus2503d ago

Yes, Odyssey is also a very strong contender.

Neonridr2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Odyssey really is a masterpiece. As much as I loved Zelda, Odyssey makes me feel like I am playing Mario 64 all over again, except done so much better.

Nyxus2503d ago

Sounds very promising!

Persian_Immortal2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Overall Zelda will win Game Of The Year i called it before it even came out, and looks like i was right https://gotypicks.blogspot.... Zelda has 4 confirmed Goty wins, even if it dont win TGA its going to win Overall GOTY, shame for Horizon but fan power and being estabilished wins look at Uncharted 4 and Witcher 3.

-Foxtrot2503d ago

No love for the Evil Within 2 survival horror wise but Resident Evil 7 gets some mentions...come on.

Neonridr2503d ago

I think because RE7 reinvented itself, whereas Evil Within 2 sort of carries over from the first game.

-Foxtrot2503d ago

RE7 is basically just Outlast, P.T and the like...

The Evil Within 2 expanded on the first game and give us a bit more freedom to explore the town of Union. It was an improvement in everyway and didn't forget the franchises identity in the process.

Neonridr2503d ago

@Foxtrot - I am not saying it's not a great game, I loved the first Evil Within (own part 2 but haven't started it yet). I just think RE7 changed up the game so much switching from Third person to First person. Sure it has some similarities to Outlast and P.T. but to experience an RE game from first person (or VR if you were brave enough) really was a breath of fresh air. It's still something new for the RE formula and one that was immensely successful. It's all an opinion contest anyways, nobody can tell you what horror game is your favorite.

-Foxtrot2503d ago

"nobody can tell you what horror game is your favorite"

I'd like to have seen it as an option to vote on though...they have Wolfenstein II up there despite releasing at a similar time and even have PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in the GOTY category...says it all really.

Neonridr2503d ago

@Foxtrot - can't please everyone :/

_-EDMIX-_2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

I wouldn't say "reinvent" as most of the concept in RE7, is from RE1....

Evil Within 2 has many concepts of 1, but adds a lot of different features like crafting, so....how about play it first and then come back and talk to us.

@Fox- "RE7 is basically just Outlast, P.T and the like..." Nope. Seriously, I played all 3 games you listed, they are not a like, even a little. Seriously, stop.

You can't fight back in Outlast and P.T....you have many guns and weapons in RE7, you fight many bosses, no bosses exist in Outlast besides the last which I can't even call "fighting it". Seriously, the exaggerating about RE7 isn't helping your point, it just makes it look more and more stupid.

You are correct on Evil Within 2, but no need to bash everything. I mean...I own both, I like both. BOTH are SURVIVAL horror titles, NEITHER are like Outlast or P.T

@Neo- "I just think RE7 changed up the game so much switching from Third person to First person"

ummmm RE has been in first person before and no, not much is being changed with 3rd to 1st person....the perspective is simply the way you see the game, its basically irrelevant to the actual FEATURES that make up the game. Evil Within 2 has a part in first person, someone modded the game on PC to allow a part of the game to be played in first person, SHOCK its still the same game.

You seeing their back or seeing in their face isn't change WHAT YOU DO IN THE DAMN GAME! Are you playing this game or just looking at it? Do you not understand that the perspective of such games doesn't really alter much in terms of gameplay? This isn't a hack and slash where you MUST see the character to play the game.

Neonridr2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

@EDMIX - clearly you haven't played the game in VR. Playing in 1st person and 3rd person is an ENTIRELY different experience. And which core Resident Evil game was played entirely in first person mode again?

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 2503d ago
Segata2503d ago

RE7 is classic Resident Evil just in the first person.

-Foxtrot2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

It's really not...it half arses everything in the original. If you think the RE7 is like 100% like the old games then seriously you need to play them again.

Really sick of this "bu bu but it's exactly like the older games"

Wow...it became a little scary again but seriously not by much. It was shallow compared to the original games and even games like 0 or CV. It's just better then it looks because RE6, Operation Raccoon City and Umbrella Corps were f***** shit and Revelations 2 was okay at best.

_-EDMIX-_2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Agreed

@Fox- "Wow...it became a little scary again but seriously not by much."

Ok. Thats nice.

Limited ammo, health, weapons, return to puzzles, mansion layout, item boxes etc.

No one cares buddy, you keep on with this "It's really not.." Can you give an objective list showing how or more of "its really not" and "play them again" or my favorite "It was shallow" OH so its a lot of things that are immeasurable?

Its something you can't list?

OH its something you can't objectively state?

Amazing. Soooo...what your telling me, is based on your "feelings" and nothing more? No hard facts huh? lol
Its pretty hard to say something isn't like the last thing, yet only have emotion to back your point.

_-EDMIX-_2503d ago

Both are great survival horror games.

HeisenbergX2502d ago

Maybe because Evil within 2 is a crappy action game that's not scary at all ?

Good.

Now that you´re releasing games and making big money from every gaming platform, you should double that amount and give us even more day one third party games!

Jin_Sakai1d 19h ago (Edited 1d 19h ago )

You’re delusional beyond belief. Businesses wise it doesn’t make sense and sooner or later they’ll be raising prices again to cover that billion they’re blowing every year.

outsider16241d 11h ago

Lucky for xbox that papa microsoft is rich.

purple1011d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

As someone else said earlier today, they are past the growth stage, it’s been stagnent for last 3 years, they are now in the money making stage, prepare to be goosed for as many dollars as possible for the least amount of content. It may not be bad now, (actually it is) but it will be soon (even worse) this year you got hellblade and starfirld and a load of other games that could be bought in bargain bins for about $5-30 and for that you pay them monthly

To add I honestly don’t know how you put up with the barrage of Xbox negativity (which is deserved). I put it down to:

A) you are being paid
B) you may have a problem thinking clearly
C) prefer rooting for the underdog, that’s a legit thing too. English people do it by default

Profchaos1d 14h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

Yeah Aussies also love an underdog as long as that underdog isn't Xbox as they were too of the game with the 360 then lost their minds

It’s quite funny.

Popsicle1d 13h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

Yet people still allow the troll to derail an entire topic. I don’t understand how moderation allows it.

I literally just skip the comment. This may be the best comment obscure ever made. I don’t know because I didn’t read it. I have read to many thread derailing post from this person to ever devote any time to reading another.

I wish everyone would ignore the trolls so we can have a genuine discussion. Stop feeding it and it will go away. Even just hitting the disagree button feeds it. Thats what it wants. This is the last post I will ever post about obscure because I am feeding them now.

Legit question to Mods. After such a long history of being a troll, how has this poster not been banned?

Profchaos1d ago

Is he though or does he just blindly love Xbox in the same way Sega fans loved the Dreamcast even though it was clearly dead they thought it could be redeemed

Sonic18811d 15h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

Are you insane? You want them to double the amount when the Xbox is already struggling and losing money 🤔

Hofstaderman1d 14h ago

Correction....XBOX is already dead.

Obscure_Observer1d 12h ago

"Are you insane? You want them to double the amount when the Xbox is already struggling and losing money"

As long we get the games I couldn´t care less about a trillion dollar company losing money. That´s their business to worry about. I only care about the games.

And "struggling and losing money"? Really?

"Microsoft reports Xbox’s revenue is up 61% in Q4 FY24 thanks to Activision"

https://venturebeat.com/gam...

61% more revenue and BO6 is not even out yet.

MS will make a sh!t ton of money with that game alone in all platforms. So 2 Billion yearly invested in their *core* business is nothing!

So yeah, I want them to double the investments on Gamepass. Period.

Sonic18811d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

"So yeah, I want them to double the investments on Gamepass. Period."

That ain't going to happen. Just because you want it 😂

fr0sty1d 14h ago (Edited 1d 14h ago )

They'll do that, after creating 4 more higher-priced tiers and making the one that currently includes everything only contain games that have been on the market for 4 years.

"Gamepass Ultra to the MAX: Now only $299 per year!"

Profchaos1d 14h ago (Edited 1d 14h ago )

They are trying to get a return on abk and Bethesda they won't double day one we're lucky we are still getting them now that day one has been removed from base tiers

I like how they twist cannibalising game sales into "invests".

No lifetime sales with MS, they'll F-up gaming the same as streaming services have done to the movie industry and it's workforce.

Fishy Fingers1d 17h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

Out of interest do you think those 3rd parties signing the deal are unhappy with the severence and have a gun to their head?

Bro probably has a PS+ sub and has library full of Epic launcher free games.

TheNamelessOne1d 11h ago

lol

Pretty much. There's a lot of hate on this site for Gamepass, but put games on the different tiers of the PS subscription, and whenever they get that free day one release, it's an entirely different tune. No talk about how this choice is killing devs.

DarXyde1d 10h ago

Do we think they're unhappy?

Umm...YES...?

They literally need to be paid up front to put games on the service. It's become a way to gain a foothold on the platform.

Do you think Atlus would launch on Game Pass otherwise?

MrDead1d 3h ago

"Out of interest do you think those 3rd parties signing the deal are unhappy with the severence and have a gun to their head?"

I think you mean severance... and I've noticed you don't know what it means either, MS aren't firing the third-parties they're purchasing from.

"Bro probably has a PS+ sub and has library full of Epic launcher free games."

I'm not a console gamer, but yes I do have Epic with a library full of free games... but guess what Epic rotating free games every week doesn't do. It doesn't destroy lifetime sales and cut workers out of residuals. Then you bring up PS+ a service that also doesn't destroy lifetime sales as their model allows for new releases to earn.

DivineHand1251d 13h ago

There are pros and cons to everything. Streaming services like Netflix is no different than cable tv except it is on demand. Services like Netflix has made it so that more studios can get a share in the profit where they can reach more consumers worldwide compared to the old days where the masses will only watch a few new titles per month.

The only negative about streaming services is that it no longer makes any sense to sell DVDs and Blu-rays though it can be argued that those persons may have moved on to building digital libraries for the sake of convenience.

The reason Xbox is doing so poorly is because they are not doing enough to be competitive. Their output of AA and AAA exclusive titles are extremely low compared to the competition and they haven't had a game of the year nominee in years.

Releasing their games the same date on PC is also hurting their console and it would have been more strategic for them to delay those releases by a year similar to what Sony does to maximize profits.

Gamepass alone is not to blame for Xbox's current position because it can be argued that if the service didn't exist and they had the same gaming output as they have now, they would be in an even worst spot.

"Streaming services like Netflix is no different than cable tv except it is on demand."

It's nothing like cable. My comment isn't a guess lifetime sale of films has shrunk to a point it's almost gone and so has the revenue it generated, that is money from competing TV networks, cable/satellite and physical media sales.

Lack of revenue transparency with streaming has meant workers job security and pay has massively diminished, earnings from residuals is almost gone for example the writer for Squid Games because of streaming gets no royalties despite series earning $900 million for Netflix, before streaming he would have royalties form lifetime sales.
Or another example Willow the series was pulled and is no longer watchable here's why: “Willow” was one of nearly 50 titles that Disney+ pulled from its streaming library in May. Other titles included the series “The Mysterious Benedict Society” and the feature film “The One and Only Ivan.” Disney CFO Christine McCarthy explained that Disney was expecting to take a write-down in the June quarter of $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion by removing content from its streaming platforms. By writing down the value of the content assets, Disney can remove that from its balance sheet and reduce its tax bill." Also when you pull a show you no longer need to pay residuals to the workers.

Have you also noticed the drop in quality on sfx or thought some older films look so much better then they do now? This is because the industry now relies on cheap labour for sfx outsourcing abroad, more green screen instead of location shooting and a lot less real extras bring life to a scene.

Streaming in gaming is going to be far worse as we've seen with MS consolidating a massive part of the industry to try and make the service sustainable, lifetime sales being cannibalised by gamespass and a work force that has no unions like SAG is already paying the price.

All streaming does is remove income transparency, cuts the workers from the money and sets flat rates and removes consumer ownership... but CEO's and shareholders will still be ok as they benefit from the industry consolidation.

MrDead is absolutely on fire with the post.

Nothing else I have to add other than that.

@MrDead like I said pros and cons. Some of those issues can alleviated with alleviated with regulatory intervention to give more transparency to the industry but unlikely anytime soon with all the lobbying going on.

The issue with the squid game's writer can be attributed to the terms and conditions he agreed to. It happens often in business as no one really knows how popular something will be until you catch that lightning in a bottle. I remember reading about how Nintendo hardly made anything off Pokemon Go dispite Niantic making Billions.

I don't blame streaming services for studios finding was to reduce the cost of making films. That stuff would have happened regardless because of the greed of these corporations. We see that same cost reduction happening in every industry from food to Aerospace.
