Top 5 Underrated PLAYSTATION3 Games

For those of you not yet familiar with the Unsung Heroes series, the rules are as follows; games eligible are those disc-based releases that Electronic Theatre feels have been underrated, or treated unfairly since launch. This time, it's the turn of the PLAYSTATION3. Being the Current-Generation machine with the fewest titles – and fewest exclusive releases, for that matter – many of you may be wondering exactly where Electronic Theatre'll be dragging five missed-hits from, but as with any and every console released, there's plenty of ways games can just slip by even the most observant radar...

I agree with Buzz and slightly Conan, but the rest can piss up a rope. Folklore, Genji 2, Lair are my fill ins for those other 3 and the Simpsons game coming in for close runner up.

gaffyh5678d ago

I disagree with the whole list.

The games that should be in there are Heavenly Sword, Folklore and Ratchet & Clank (especially because it is thrown to the side because people think it is a "kid's" game, but it actually is really really really good)

lordgodalming5678d ago

took the words right out of my mouth. R&C (both ToD and QfB)and Folklore are terrific games. Funny thing is, if you go back and look at reviews for Folklore, many of them are really positive, but I guess no one bought the game. And I have to say that Tools of Destruction is still my favorite PS3 game to date. Love Insomniac.

SL1M DADDY5678d ago

Yikes! That was not underapreciated, it was simply terrible. I don't mind QTE's but that game abused the system.

UltimateIdiot9115678d ago

Hot Shot golf should be on there. It's a really good game.

masterg5678d ago

MotorStorm is the most underated if you ask me.
A 82% avg on one of the greatest racers ever.

INehalemEXI5678d ago (Edited 5678d ago )

Warhawk is the most underated game of the generation so far IMO http://www.youtube.com/watc... watch and drool

If they did not abandon the single player campaign and came with a solid co-op it would of been my selection for greatest of all time.

Has a respectable Meta 84 but plays like 100. Especially with the Operation fallen star booster pack... Jetpack's and trophy's.

ThatCanadianGuy5678d ago

I agree demonStalker!

Warhawk is one of the best online games i've played since Battlefield:2 I love everything about that game.

There's some moments in the game where you just have to stop and go..WOW!

i would give it atleast a 9/10.And you gotta love the dedication incognito put's into it with all the DLC

INehalemEXI5678d ago (Edited 5678d ago )

Yah , Thats the game I really want the screen capture feature for. I could of set up a camera and tripod but I feel Narsasistic doing that and its a pain and produces a somewhat poor quality video vs screen capture.

Very amazing gameplay goes on late into the night many sessions. Bubs to yall fellow Warhawkians.

gunnerheadboy5678d ago

I actually think Buzz! is awesome. It's best played with other people, not by your self.

Johnny_Boy5678d ago

Warhawk is by far the most underated game on ps3 the online experience in that game is impeccable. Definetely a game that has shown that the psn is a place to have a great online experience thats exclusive to the console. Also Heavenly Sword as far as action adventure games truly great fighting system and amazing graphics that for some reason are never mentioned and holy crap the amount of baddies to slice and dice through, the only thing reviewers could whine about was how short it was, who cares the game was amazing and leaving u wanting more how exactly is that a bad thing.

barom5677d ago

I agree with Heavenly Sword and Folklore. But R&C was not underRATED at all! It got a wooping 88.6% at gamerankings. That's a really high score and the franchise is known too. I don't think anyone looks at Ratchet and throws it off their radar because it's a kids game, I think they just don't like those type of games in general.

On a sidenote I'll add Stranglehold and Virtua Fighter 5. Stranglehold because it's a lot of fun period. Virtua Fighter 5 because it was a launch game and the interest in it died wayyy too fast. I might even go as far as to say it was better than Soul Calibur IV. The biggest thing was that it was missing online, but it was still a great game.

redgaurd5677d ago

nah, just kidding. Warhawk definately. Even though I get pwnd all day and night, Its the best fun I have had online....except for the time me and your sister posted our videos on exxxpress lol

BattleAxe5677d ago (Edited 5677d ago )

The Darkness was awesome and I agree that it was totaly underrated. If you guys haven't tried it, rent it or buy it, its a quality game.

boodybandit5677d ago (Edited 5677d ago )

Man it's hard to argue with Warhawk especially after viewing that video. Nothing online runs better than Warhawk with as many players as it supports on any console. The game is simply incredible. I can't believe I have all but stopped playing it. I should be embarrassed to call myself a gamer.

That video has me wanting to fire it up ASAP! If only I could afford to skip work today to do that very thing ;)

I disliked Conan.Too average for me

xhi45678d ago

games cost so much especially where I live it's only really worth it to buy the realllyy realllyy great games like Gears of War 1,2, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, MGS4, GTA IV etc.

Though some games true are underated, its because they get overshadowed by greater games and are really only normal, average but good games.

None of those mentioned are truly UNDERATED games, a truly underated game for it's time is ICO and Folklore, two truly great games that weren't picked up by the mass market of gamers at the time.

Mr_Bun5678d ago (Edited 5678d ago )

I thought Conan was pretty fun...The voice acting was lame and the boss fights can get annoying, but the gore and move list make up for it.

thisguywithhair5678d ago

I played Conan. Was actually pretty excited about getting it too. But after the third level with no variation on the fighting, no real story elements, and no variety in the boss fight formula I just gave up and sold the game.

Sounds like a remaster of The Darkness game may be in the works

The CEO of Nightdive Studios has said in a tweet that the game is currently on the list for a modern update.

isarai239d ago

Oh I'm sold already, Nightdive does really solid remasters, and to this day I still love the darkness

Leeroyw238d ago

Mike Patton of Faith No More did the voice too. It was such a great game.

Quetzll238d ago

Had no idea and i absolutely love FNM and Patton. Gonna go back and play this game.

Snookies12238d ago

The Darkness was awesome! Here's hoping a remaster might lead to a new game!

RaidenBlack238d ago

Darkness 1 is coming to PC! .... OMG!

isarai238d ago

That honestly might be the biggest W here. Darkness with RTX would be neat to see

I_am_Batman239d ago

Excellent news. The Darkness is one of my all-time favorite games and the sequel is great too. I've just recently had a great time replaying them on my PS3. Unfortunately it's kinda hard to recommend them these days, because they're stuck on PS3 and 360 so a remaster would certainly be appreciated. Nightdive has been killing it lately.

DefenderOfDoom2238d ago

Awesome, I loved The Darkness made by Starbreeze who a lot them are now developers at Machine Games . Yes , again thank you Nightdive !

Dagexon238d ago

Now I'm hoping they remaster more of starbreeze's games. Namely the chronicles of riddick games

DefenderOfDoom2237d ago

Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay , is one my favorite gaming experience I ever had . Great game .!

ModsDoBetter238d ago

Excellent games.
Recently ran through The Darkness 2 on PS3 again.

I hated the switch in style when it first came out but they're both amazing games.

Sony PlayStation Should Reintroduce Buzz! On The PS5

Buzz! Games had a time when they took over the gaming world. They were amongst the most popular PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. It only makes sense for them to return on the PS5.

Omg this! My family play Knowledge is Power to fill the void as we wait for a new generation of Buzz.

Awesome fun at Christmas with the family or with your mates when the drinks are flowing.

jznrpg461d ago (Edited 461d ago )

Is it sad I never even heard of this or just don’t remember it at all ? Not the type of game I would play generally so I know nothing about it . I would check it out if it’s fun with the fam . I have owned every PS ever made including the Go that I gave to my son . Just don’t remember this

MightyHealthy461d ago

I vaguely remember it myself.
Not sure why your honesty was downvoted I threw u an upvote

SonyStyled461d ago

There was a f2p version on the PS3 store (might still be there) and a version of it in PS Home. That’s my only experience with it but it seemed like a party/trivia game. Not sure what the full titles were like

FinalFantasyFanatic461d ago

I saw it advertised everywhere but never played it, didn't seem like my type of game.

Profchaos461d ago

Yes buzz was the greatest party game back in the day.

And in today's world everyone has a potential buzzer in their pocket with the app integration similar to knowledge is power and no more tangled cables.

The Wood461d ago

I still have my buzz controllers. Good party game

SullysCigar460d ago

I still have the original buzz controllers.... AND the revised wireless ones!

I know...but we really loved it back in the day.. lol

refocusedman461d ago

I would love another buzz game. it was family friendly, funny, entertaining, and easy to learn/play so supper accessible.

mastershredder461d ago

Popular when? It was not popular back then at all except outside the stares for some reason. It was gimmicky as f when everyone thought they were so clever making game-show like games. but with puppet people… yuck.

You wanna gameshow game? Smash TV. Done. Move on.

andy85461d ago

I'd consider sales of over 10 million pretty popular. I know a few people who had (and still have them) fun with a few drinks.

Deeeeznuuuts461d ago

Love playing it with a few drinks, can't beat it, oh and singstar of course 🤣🤣🤣

Profchaos461d ago

Yeah the world is much bigger than the states in Europe, ociana it was very popular with all sorts of people's from non gamers to gamers.

Smash tv never heard of it.

Rock Band Doesn't Need Plastic Instruments to Work

TheGamer Writes "Harmonix has proven plenty of times it can make Rock Band work without instruments."

thegamer.com
Christopher483d ago

I mean, yeah, but was anyone saying otherwise? The fact is people liked the plastic instruments rather than pressing buttons on a controller. They enjoyed the simulated experience.

isarai483d ago

"Work"? No, but to be good? It's absolutely necessary. Not having the accessories is like playing a lightgun shooter with an analog stick sure it works, but one experience is completely unique and fun as hell, and other is torture trying to make do playing in a way it was never meant to be played

LucasRuinedChildhood483d ago (Edited 483d ago )

"trying to make do in a way it was never meant to be played"

I disagree. The accessories were a fun gimmick (and very marketable) but they were added AFTER the genre had been well established with games like Frequency and Amplitude (both also made by Harmonix).

The gameplay formula is different on a controller - there's a focus on switching lanes and contributing to all of the instruments.

Never played Frequency, but Amplitude and Rock Band Blitz were really good. I would love to get more of that kind of game. It's basically a different part of the genre, and stands on its own.

isarai483d ago

The insurmountable difference in popularity between Amplitude and Rock Band proves my point

LucasRuinedChildhood482d ago (Edited 482d ago )

Popularity isn't proof of quality. If it was, then Harmonix wouldn't be making music for Fortnite now. lol. Our disagreement wasn't over which one is more popular. Amplitude and Blitz just aren't "torture" to play.

Rock Band 4 and Guitar Hero Live failed to revive their sub-genre, and Rock Band 4 caused Mad Catz to have to file for bankruptcy. Doesn't mean that instrument-based music games are bad.

It does mean that there's too much overhead and risk for anyone to take a gamble on a big budget game that needs instrument accessories now though.

For the genre to thrive, for now, it needs to do so without the instrument accessories. That's just a fact, unfortunately.

VR games like Beat Sabre (a new sub-genre) and traditional music games make more sense and are more viable right now.

LucasRuinedChildhood482d ago (Edited 482d ago )

*"If quality is always proved by popularity, then Harmonix wouldn't be making music for Fortnite now."

Yi-Long483d ago

I think CHEAP plastic instruments is THE reason why the instrument-genre ‘died’.

People invested in buying the game AND the peripherals, so the guitar, the dj-set, the drum, whatever, and the experience was absolutely fantastic. Great fun, great music, etc.

But then the instruments would break. A button would stop working, or your hits wouldn’t register, and that kind of hardware failure would end in you not being able to play the game as intended, and thus you not getting the scores you deserve.

So, now you had a great game, but a broken instrument, and nobody is gonna buy a new plastic instrument every 3-6 months in order to keep playing the game.

A solution would have been to release better quality instruments (obviously), at a slightly higher price, so you could have kept the new games coming and the genre alive, but sadly, that didn’t happen.

dumahim482d ago (Edited 482d ago )

The only issue I ever had with any of the hardware was the drum pedal on the original rock band set stared to crack in half. The reason I, and other friends I know who played, lost interest is they weren't putting out new tracks that we were interested in anymore. I think earlier this year I looked through the releases for the last 2 years or so, and there was maybe 3 songs I would have bought.

slayernz482d ago

Yeah I had this happen too with my drum controller, I ended up attaching a metal strip to it which fixed it up nicely.

sinspirit483d ago

Can it work? Yes. Does it compare? No.

monkey602483d ago

Bust a Groove, Gitaroo Man and Parrapa the Rappa were such good games. Neither needed any extra peripherals
