1UP: Alan Wake Comes Out of Hiding - New Screen and Interview

1UP writes: "No, it's not canned. It's still coming.

After two years of silence, Alan Wake developer Remedy is gearing up to release a new trailer of its game in Finland to coincide with the release of the Max Payne movie (Remedy also developed Max Payne). Remedy granted us an exclusive interview with Sam Lake, the developer's lead writer behind both Max Payne games and the Microsoft exclusive Alan Wake. Sam's been at Remedy since 1996, and besides lending his jacket to the character, he also lent his face for the first incarnation of Max Payne.

1UP: Was releasing a new Alan Wake trailer in Finland your plan for a while or was it more of a spur of the moment thing with the Max Payne movie coming out? What are your hopes with the trailer?

Sam Lake: Honestly, a spur of the moment thing. At Remedy, we make cinematic games that draw inspiration from TV series and movies, and we started to talk about how cool it would be to see Alan Wake on the big screen. In Finland, with the Max Payne movie, it proved out to be an easy thing to arrange. We have been silent for a long while, concentrating on developing the game, and it felt good to remind everyone what Alan Wake is all about."

Ateanboy6102d ago

And I DOUBT this game will be good...

There's nothing about it that interests me one bit.

But, to each his own, I guess.

TheColbertinator6102d ago (Edited 6102d ago )

Its been so long.2005 to be exact.Hopefully the TGS trailer is phenomenal

Tobias1236102d ago

I'm very interested in this game. Remedy haven't failed me before, I don't think they'll start now. Bring it on!

lowcarb6102d ago

WEll if this releases next year based on this pic alone I think we are in for a treat. Next year might just shape up to be the year of 360 just like last was PS3 until September though.

lowcarb6102d ago (Edited 6102d ago )

Tacki your right and I'm just going to wait for some actual new gameplay footage. I know I'm being a little extreme here but I like poking fun at the fanboys to be honest and have a feeling this game will help shut some of them up once and for all. Now if this game does look mind blowing I think it will be safe to say that 360 really is an impressive console and maybe even the more powerful one but only after seeing this in action before making the claim.

Kuest6102d ago (Edited 6102d ago )

Bubbles, lowcarb, you literally convinced me to start caring about Alan Wake. Who would have thought?

I still can't get over that groundbreaking footage... When? How? What the f#ck?

Tacki6102d ago (Edited 6102d ago )

It's alright man, I can understand your excitement. If it plays as good as it looks then folks are in for a real treat.

As for which console is 'most' powerful, I don't think it really matters. Both machines ARE powerful and in my opinion close enough at this point that you're not going to have a vastly difference experience on either. What I mean by that is... I don't believe it will ever be such a difference that it's like looking at a Wii game in comparison to a 360 or PS3 game. No offense intended, Wii fans, and I'm speaking solely on the showcasing of graphics.

As an owner of all 3 consoles it makes very little difference to me whether one outperforms another. To a point I can understand fanboys and why they do what they do. Often it evolves from the poking or prodding from the 'other' side. When both sides are doing it there doesn't seem to be any reason to stop. It's kind of like... if you offer them courtesy it's still not likely to stop the cycle. Who started it to begin with? We'll never know. We can only observe how it goes from topic to topic.

For me it's a sad thing to see though. In many cases I think the arguments take the spotlight away from the game that should have it. Some gamers get so caught up in the experience that others are having that they often seem to forget that it makes very little difference. Whether 10 or 20 people love or hate a title you yourself enjoy makes little difference. Their experience does not define your own. Nor does it change it.

We can rarely go into a Gears of War 2 or Resistance 2 article now without hearing mention of the other. This, in my view, is so silly. If one just so happens (and I believe it's unlikely with either, though it does come down to each individual's opinion) to suck it won't make the other game any better! Just as if one is really good it won't make the other worse.

Sales are often brought up as well to prove some sort of point. I believe that we as 'gamers' shouldn't really care for sales unless it's out of the interest of receiving a sequel to that game or continued support of that platform. Of course we have free will to be as reasonable or as childish as we like and no doubt here at N4G many are exercising their right to either end of the spectrum... but from my perspective a good many have lost their focus on the more important matter. That being their own experiences with games. We should think of what we're getting. What we're feeling. Whether or not tusheymonster69 or any other random person should be having a 'better' experience than us or if we're having a better experience than them shouldn't even be on our minds. If it is then why stop at game consoles?

When I wake up in the morning and have some toast I think I'm going to start logging onto the internet and bragging about it. I will go to a toast forum (you can find anything on the internet) and begin to boast how I am eating the greatest piece of toast ever to grace a man's body. I will tout how my toast is fitting more butter than the competitors bread and how no one will ever have a more even spread. I will then laugh as I log off... feeling better about myself and the meal I have just consumed.

That above paragraph was probably unnecessary to help get my point across... but what the hell, I enjoy wasting my time I guess. And I must make it clear that my post (at least not the entirety of it) is not directed at you... but is kind of an open letter to all members and gamers here. Personally I try to only address those who I feel are either being unfair or are telling outright lies. I'm not saying that I'm perfect or that I haven't approached situations or members of this community in the past in a wrong way. There's been times when I've fallen victim to frustration and made statements I wish I hadn't... or that I feel were a little childish in the end.

I have no problem with those who believe this game or that is the 'best' looking. Or those who think a particular console is able to provide the best experience. I'm respect them as long as they behave in a respectful manner and acknowledge that they are merely projecting their opinion and not absolute truth. The ones who really bug me are those who always bring up comparisons which often have little to do with the articles at hand. "Heavy Rain looks better than Alan Wake." or "Gears of War 2 PWNS Resistance 2!" is an example of what you might and are likely to see. I often ask myself "Why can we not just appreciate games in the articles that pertain to those specific ones?" Then I wonder if it's healthy to be talking to myself.

No but really, I know fanboys will never be eliminated... but if only some of us could alter our approach when addressing them. It's not impossible to make a response without putting down their games or console of preference. I realize I must sound like Smokey the Bear here or something.

Remember, only YOU can stop console wars! ;)

I've already said more than I really needed to I think... but I felt like sharing some of my thoughts on these issues. I know it's kind of a fools dream... but I wish I could go into an article without hearing a Street Fighter announcer's voice. You know what I mean...

ROUND 2!
FIGHT!

@ Kuest
This has nothing to do with the article but I just have to say that I think you're hilarious man! Not mention reasonable and level-headed. It's very nice to see all those qualities in one package.

You know what else is funny? The censor wouldn't let me put 'bit' and 'childish' next to one another (even spaced) because it detected it as 'b*tch'. lol

Kuest6102d ago

Mr. Tacki, I don't think anything can be said of your preposterously long post, except that you deserve bubbles... lots of them.

And thank you, by the way, for your delicious compliment; again, its always nice when one is cognizant of my petty attempts at wit.

xhi46100d ago

so you think if Alan Wake does come out next year itll be the 360 year 2009?

but its also coming out on the PC, so all the PS3 owners can get it as well....hhhmm

but anyway lets test your theory...

Wake vs. God of War 3, Team Ico Game, Demon Souls, War Devil, 9 announced games, Uncharted 2, New Insomniac Game, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5, Tekken 6, White Knight Chronicles to name a few?

hhmmm.....sure seems like the year of 360 2009 doesn't it.

Cure6102d ago

but wtf are you people so excited for this game for???

the trailer was boring.....i just dont get it..

someone explain!

lowcarb6102d ago (Edited 6102d ago )

Alan Wake will be set in a world bigger then Oblivion and have some real horror in the Mouth of Madness/xfiles type stuff going on. The trailer here is amazing and was shown 2 years ago which will set it's development time close to 4 years if released next year. This game alone will slaughter any game thats been announced yet for 360 and PS3 and the people that disagree will just have to deal with it plain and simple. Just wait for more footage and then you will understand. http://www.gamersyde.com/st...

PoSTedUP6102d ago (Edited 6102d ago )

hype much?

bouncybullet6102d ago

Well I can tell you what the KZ2 kids are excited about.

The dirt on the ground.

"hype much"??

"the ground textures look so sick!!!" = Actual PS3 Fanboy talking about killzone 2 in an article a few posts away.

Tacki6102d ago (Edited 6102d ago )

Whoa, man... I'm seriously looking forward to this title as well... and from the footage that's been shown it's easily one of the most gorgeous games out there... but you have to be careful with games like this. What we've been shown looks extremely promising, however, we still know relatively little about the game. We've seen very little. It's quite a looker but we have to wait and see if the gameplay and everything else comes together as well. I think it will... but no one's even had any hands-on time with the title. We don't really know what to expect beyond a very pretty open world experience.

I'm not saying no one should get excited... but I think saying it will crush all other games at this point would be getting ahead of ourselves a bit much.

devilhunterx6102d ago

you must be new here. Cause I surely remember when the Halo boys went crazy over last gen grass in Halo 3. Grass. They were HYPING GRASS!

ThatCanadianGuy6102d ago

Uhh lowcarb..show me some CONSOLE gameplay before you go saying its going to destroy any game coming out for 360 or PS3.

That link you showed was running on a PC.

lowcarb6102d ago

This video is 2 years old and just here shortly you will finally be able to see just how powerful this game is and will run on 360. Here are some 360 screen shots which are exactly the same as the vid i sent. Also I bet the game looks much better now but unfortunately we need to wait.

PoSTedUP6102d ago (Edited 6102d ago )

ps3 kids are excited from the "gameplay" we have seen of KZ2.

No Way6102d ago

Kind of a goody story...

On a serious note, that is why I try activating gift cards asap. It's happened to me where the store didnt scan it right where the card was unusuable. Happened at Wally World.

gigoran8429d ago

wait, that place is real? national lampoon wasn't kidding?

Tacoboto428d ago

I just bought two of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies on 4K - both had digital copies expiring in 2023. Both were actually expired.

I'd be surprised but it's WB, of course they'd actually expire them

Knightofelemia429d ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Chocoburger429d ago

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Rynxie429d ago

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

429d ago
Profchaos429d ago

So in short she paid $240.00 assuming usd for a bunch on unactivated game codes.

I still don't understand why I guess cause there's not a physical version and she wanted something for a collection or art project.

Rynxie429d ago

No, most likely to resell. However, she ended up getting screwed.

Asplundh429d ago

This is Alan Wake 1, it had physical copies.

A thermos is upending the Alan Wake community

Remedy has Alan Wake merch on sale, including a pretty blue thermos. Unfortunately, things haven’t gone according to plan, and many players who want a thermos find themselves without one, though it does appear that Remedy is attempting to fix things. Nevertheless, it has resulted in a lot of upset, illustrating just how much the thermos means to Alan Wake fans.
