Wipeout HD vs. F-Zero GX

Ah, Wipeout HD... Speed, finesse, technical mastery, the most banging of soundtracks... The game has it all as futuristic racers go, right?

Well actually no. Another game had all of those things years ago, and frankly, it did them all better. That game is F-Zero GX, released in 2003 on the Gamecube.

F-Zero GX is one of the best racers of all time. I prefer it much over the Wipeout series. Obviously this is all just a matter of taste etc, so feel free to disagree... but the design and gameplay for F-Zero were just amazing. It took a while getting into, but once you were in, Time-Attack became more addictive than porn and M&M's.
The tracks are all very varied, take a while to master, opposition is very tough, etc.

The only thing I didnt like about F-Zero (other than the fact it was on the Gamecube), were the character-designs. It's probably me, but those characters just sucked. Also, story-mode was extremely hard. (Ok... so that's 3 things I didnt like)

But yeah, give me FZero over Wipeout any day of the weak...

untill they recommended playing the gamecube F-Zero instead of Wipeout-HD. FZero has better tracks in my opinion, I love the fact that parts of the track have missing siderails. I used to love taking opponents out by trying to hit them off and at the same time not throwing myself off. And its definitely more of a challenge, you have to break and watch your speed alot more. But you can't say go play an almost 10 year old game instead of wipeout HD.

I can't speak on Wipeout HD as I haven't purchased it yet (don't worry I'll get around to it) but I will say I very much like the original Fzero for the SNES. F-zero GX for the gamecube? I hated it. Honestly I preferred XG3 to that game. I love high-speed racers with weapons.

It is the best downloadable game on the PS3 right now! This game is so well put together and is so fast and looks so good. There is a campain mode, an 8 player online mode, and just a play by yourself mode. It rocks! It is so easy to play once you get the hang of the controls.

Get this game! You also know they are gonna add downloadable content to this game (more tracks)

Also the tropies are cool in this game and it is easy to get some of them.

...is that the high score charts need some attention. They don't update anywhere near fast enough. Also, if you get a really great lap/race time and you are not on-line at the time it does not later upload that score for the global high-scores next time you're on-line. It only remains as a personal record.

However, its a minor gripe for a game I would score as 9.75/10. Its damn near perfect and is the most fun I have had from a PSN game since getting Super Stardust HD.

bring a lot of fun and enjoyment to the table for me. Of course, the gameplay itself is the major factor but if everything is pretty to look at, there aren't any graphical glitches, and the framerate is as smooth as silk, for me it makes it more enjoyable. Of course, Wipeout HD has both gameplay and graphics to a T.

wipEout is a better game imo, however to base this claim only on the fact that it's "next gen" or has "next gen" graphics is baseless. Lair has "next gen" graphics but I'd rather play rogue squadron or panzer dragoon orta any day, it's not a better game then many of the classics out there.

Graphics don't mean everything, but he has a valid argument, especially for this genre.

I've played a lot of GX and it's a really nice game with awesome gameplay and cool tracks. I've always thought of it as more of a casual racer that's perfect for a preparty.
One of the best titles on the GC imo... never played the arcade version though :(

But I do prefer the Wipeout-series just because it has always been a topnotch game allover the spectrum, it's got style, brilliant gameplay mechanics with a lot of depth... except for maybe Fusion. :P
They should have compared F-zero GX with Wipeout Fusion (PS2) instead of HD imo, since they're from the same generation.

If you're a fan of futuristic racers, you should definetly give GX a chance. :)

I'd like to see him take that rail-less 90 degree turn at "Mach 14" without slowing down in Wipeout HD. Sure you can do that in F-zero GX but that's what makes it completely unrealistic. Wipeout HD has much more believable physics and the F-zero GX maps levels are more about the frustration of taking dead ends than it is about perfecting the race. In Wipeout HD if you tried to pull that crap, you'd completely fly off the map. And btw there is NO proper mastery of letting you take a 90 degree turn at 2000 mph without completely flying off the corner. What he calls mastery is called a poor physics engine with plenty of exploits.

i loved f zero x!!!!!!! i never played gx since i never purchased a game cube. i absolutely loved f zero x because the racing tracks had a lot of effort put into them. personally i feel that the tracks that were on wipeout hd could of been a lot better but i keep reminding myself that this is not f zero this is wipeout. in f zero x the racing tracks were a lot more wide and at some points you can do race upon all parts of the track. from top to the bottom and to the sides as well. i agree with the fact that f zero does not much skill. the only thing you need to do is make sure your ship was full shield and hit all the speed arrows the times have changed and so have the graphics. I still love wipeout hd even though i think its a little slow for my taste but that does not jusity this game being bashed by the author. It really sounds like hes pissed off cause hes not good at wipeout hd.

a great feature with in Wipeout HD is that if Techno isn't your thing you can play your own music to get pumped up too. so technically Wipeout HD can't have the worst music because you can put your favorite music on it.

Well I flat out disagree. Yes F-zero is faster and has more interesting tracks but Wipeout looks better, is more challenging (in a good way), and has a much more interesting soundtrack.

When it comes down to gameplay wipeout is just more deep I think, F-zero was more like a fast easy-pickup arcade game (but a very good one and had nice track design).

For me I think of it like this.

Arcade > Motorstorm > F-zero

Realistic(deep handling, difficulty) > GT5p > Wipeout

I know that FZero on snes was kick ass , I never played GX but i've played Wipeout Pulse and between the two i think I prefer FZERO . Maybe its the fact that I have so many games on psp i dont spend enough time trying to master the game well. I get more fun playing Bleach Heat the Soul 4!

I despise FZERO, totally overrated for one simple reason: it's a nintendo game. If it were a completely new title from an unheard of developer then it would have picked up reviews of around 7-8 / 10 but instead it got minimum 9s (similar scenario with the new mario kart).

Before you ask. YES i own a gamecube, i like nintendo and i own FZERO-GX and the SNES original. But wipeout is just a much better game in every way, faster, cooler, prettier. Wipeout is the undoubted king of futuristic racers.

F-Zero is by no means a bad game, very playable (even though I don't like the SNES version), it's better than say Fatal Inertia, but Wipeout is the definitive future racer. Big props to F-Zero for the genre, but Psygnosis (now Studio Liverpool), took everything you had and made it better.

The sensation of speed in Wipeout HD is incredible. I was doing a Speed Lap and pushing milliseconds off to get gold and got it with 0.1 to spare and my heart was racing and I realised I'd been holding my breath in the last few corners. That's what Wipeout is. A real rush of adrenalin. The ultimate sensation of speed.

See if it had an internal view, it would probably cause me to have a heart attack! Something to think of for the next game!

in wipeout you come to a grinding halt if you even as much as scrape the side. its all style and no substance. wipeout is 'cooler.'

F zero is the better game. it is more fun and more playable. it doesn't take itself super seriously like wipeout does and end up dull.

You have to have a lot of skill and patience to beat f zero on the hardest cups... it is incredibly challenging. Wipeout is only challenging because of bad design.

but in wipeout, when you put custum tracks on its soo cool how the music will slow down or speed up depending what you do, especially when you do a barrel roll of a high cliff. its NUTS!!!! I have nine inch nails and tool on there . and for those vids of WO he showed, he didn't even have it on phantom speed class to show how fast and difficult it can be, especially if you wanna be masterful at it

There are courses in Wipeout like Cheng and ubermall with those terrible hairpin turns that really shouldn't be any faster.

Both games are great.

Track design on Wipeout is better or at least equivalent to me.

Those 360 courses on FZ were truly cool though.

GFX way better on wipeout NO ARGUMENT.

Man, this is just stupid. I'm sorry but i downloaded Wipeout as soon as i could and that is ALL i have played since then. AMAZING GAME! I would love to see a new f zero game though as i don't have much to play on my wii right now.

F-Zero was the king of anti-g racer until now Wipeout HD Has knocked it out of the park on every level in game custom sountrack.,You can't beat it. Hint:(take Wipeout for the ps1, put it in your ps3, copy the songs from the game on to your ps3 and then play HD...CS it brings a tear to your eyes) and yes they put a gun on a car as a matter of fact they put many guns on the cars and let me tell you F-Zero doesn't have a chance until Wii-HD or something.
