Penello: I Love and Don't Want To Break Console Gaming; I Don't Want A New Console Every Year

Microsoft's Albert Penello assured that he loves console gaming as is and doesn't want to break it. He doesn't want to switch to a new system every year or so, either.

offcourse they dont , only in words though (and after they saw Layden s answer about PS5) as XoneX is virtually a next gen console with just a different designation ..

Imp0ssibl32491d ago

Well then PS4 Pro is almost a next gen console too

GTgamer2491d ago

Not really just look at games like horizon Sony made sure the ps4 pro didn't make the ps4 look like weak by comparison but compare the xonex to xone it's literally leaps above it and if ms choose to target 1080p instead of 4k that extra gpu power can make next generation looking games.

JaguarEvolved2491d ago (Edited 2491d ago )

Seems like they've applied the same policies across the board at Microsoft. They don't want to have exclusive games on the xbox every year but it seems like they've taken it to extremes. They don't want to have any exclusive titles at all on xbox . I like the xbox but it seems like the Microsoft Xbox execs don't like supplying games exclusivemy for the fans. I would like to buy the xox as well but there aren't any compelling games coming to it that entices me to buy it.

KakashiHotake2491d ago

Now that's just a huge exaggeration. Most games on PS4 Pro are identical to standard PS4. Maybe if Sony done away with the parity clause then that statement would make a lot more sense.

2490d ago
richyque2490d ago (Edited 2490d ago )

It is, but xbox fans will cling on to any 3rd party since xboxonex lacks 1st party support that they desperately need to show what the console can do.

DarXyde2490d ago

The difference being that Pro won't have any exclusive games, period (assuming Sony is absolutely adamant on that). There are no exclusive accessories either. It's really just a console to bolster what you already have and is seen entirely as optional.

One X will at the very least have VR titles unavailable on the standard Xbox One. I wouldn't be surprised if HoloLens is X exclusive as well.

Two very different visions, I think. I think Sony is really not trying to alienate whereas Microsoft might be trying to wean their customers for a transition to X. I think the differences in offerings will become more pronounced with time. I wouldn't be surprised if One X becomes a weird standalone generation- independent device that has exclusives and support until the next official Xbox releases. That would at least somewhat coincide with their vision for console generations.

donthate2490d ago

Actually no. PS4 Pro is almost just a PS4. The only difference is GPU increase and bump to the CPU.

DragonKnight2490d ago

I think people are forgetting that what Penello wants or doesn't want means diddly squat. If his bosses want an Xbox console every year, then that's what's going to happen.

GoodnessGreatness2490d ago

it's still a PS4, it's not a PS5

Mr Pumblechook2490d ago

Microsoft have changed their tune. First they said it was the end of the traditional console cycle - but publishers told them there was no way they would move to a new generation without Sony and PS5. So now they've backtracked and the Scorpio' ambition was scaled back and the XBO X is firmly part of this generation and Penello is talking about generations again.

There's no doubt that there will be a ps5 and xbtwo... its what happens 3-4 years after those release that is unknown.

The only certainties in life are death, taxes and next gen gaming.

"offcourse they dont , only in words though (and after they saw Layden s answer about PS5) as XoneX is virtually a next gen console with just a different designation .."

Of course it's next gen because it's more powerful, that way you can remove any comparisons. How convenient. Sorry to bust your bubble but there will be a new Xbox down the road in a few years as well.

2490d ago
Zeref2491d ago (Edited 2491d ago )

They were never going to release a console every year. That's just dumb. It's gonna be every 3-4 years. But like the smartphone model, if you have a fairly decent iPhone(4s), you can still download the latest apps. If you have an older iPhone, 3GS for example, you won't be able to download the new apps, but on the new iPhone your old apps will work and maybe better. Same thing is gonna happen with Xbox.
Instead of a complete reset, where you lose access to your games. and devs will lose their install base.
It's an outdated model and it's not good for consumers and developers. It should not be tolerated any further.

For those saying, well I have my PS4 and my PS3 to play their respective games. So with the PS5 you have 3 consoles sitting under your tv, with 3 different sets of controllers that only work with their respective console.
Is it not a 1000x easier to have it all on one system and being able to sell your old console or give it away?

Magnes2490d ago

But if you upgrade consoles every three years and make the the 3 year old console obsolete then it's the same as PC and the constant upgrades. I'm not saying I want an 8 year cycle but at least 6. Most of the good game franchises take 2 to three years to make a new installment. Is it to much to ask for two installments per console generation

2490d ago
conanlifts2490d ago

"would say the same for PS4 pro but imo Pro is just mild anti-measures against MS s strategy "

I am confused by this comment. Sony made the first move. Xbox X is a response to the ps4 pro. You seem to have it backwards.

XanderZane2490d ago

Neither the PS4 Pro or XB1X are next gen. They are both mid-gen hardware upgrades. Both Sony and Microsoft have said this time and time again. Whether you want to accept it or not, is up to you.

I think upgrades every 3-4 years will be the new norm

Alexious2491d ago

It would be nice so that console gamers feel a little less left behind when compared to PC.

Armyntt2490d ago

I agree. I think a new console every 3 years is just right.

BlackTar1872490d ago

I've never met a console gamer that feels left behind. Consoles imo have better games.

LOGICWINS2490d ago

@Alexious- Agree wholeheartedly. I want the option to upgrade every 3 years as opposed to every 6. This would lessen the technological gap between PC and consoles.

I think that depends on how successful these mid-gen consoles end up being in the end. If they don't sell well, we might not see them again.

RememberThe3572491d ago (Edited 2491d ago )

Great point. Sony and Nintendo are reliant on their consoles as platforms. MS has Windows and that dynamic may pull the companies in different directions. MS can afford to play around with Xbox a little (no more exclusives, beastly midgen upgrade) but as we've seen Sony is going to be a little more conservative. I didn't like the idea of these midgen upgrades at first, and I still don't, but I like to see these companies trying something a little different. My PS4 is my sole console now and I really don't feel like it's been undercut by the PSPro, my roommate has a PSPro and though the visual differences are obvious, they're not dramatic.

LOGICWINS2490d ago

^^I'm upgrading to a Pro next month. I think the differences will become more pronounced with games like Spiderman, God of War, and TLOU2. Even Spike Chunsoft wants people to play Danganronpa V3 on the PS4 Pro.

After the Pro, I'll upgrade to the PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro in 2023-24.

2490d ago Replies(1)
fenome2490d ago

Personally I'd rather them squeeze it out for 6-7 years. I don't want it to be the norm after this. I think this gen is an exception to the rule because 4K is just starting to hit mainstream and get adopted by the mass market.

Call me crazy, but I like seeing a system be supported for long periods of time. Everything else seems to be disposable nowadays, I really don't want to see the same thing happen to my consoles.

SonsOf Zadok2490d ago

This really is no different than previous gens. The xbox one and ps4 came out in 2013, and simply released models of the same platform that enhances the graphics and performance. Now we can enjoy games that look like the versions they show in the trailers, instead of the shit down grades that we got durning the ps3 and 360 era, hell even this era. But any fool knows that in 2 or 3 years we will get another Next Generation launch.

ILostMyMind2490d ago

I'm not really sure about that. This may depend on how much each platform has evolved over the previous one. Anyone who owns a PS4 and sees videos about Pro does not feel uncomfortable about not having bought a half-cycle console. On the other hand, anyone who sees this news about XBX feels that they now only have a paper weight with their XBO. I do not know if this is healthy for the gaming industry.

@Alexious
That's why I never compare my games to PCs version. Also because the games shown on that videos are always running on PCs Tops and I know most of players don't have such machines.

You will be force to do that. The power card is a double edge sword. By next year the PS5 news will start and you know that all your strategy is based on power... because exclusive experience wise...

Alexious2491d ago

Greenberg just said they have many unannounced games. At least a few of those should be exclusives

jznrpg2491d ago

Greenburg? Really? He's a tool. Xbox doesn't have exclusives anymore. That's that and it's okay. A lot or all of the games he's referring to probably won't be on PS but they'll be on PC and that's okay too.

XGreenGangsta. i appreciate the list as i have one myself but where is the full list because there is much more then what i see in your list below, there is some real winners on n4g who deserve to be on that list.
i remember the good old times with super nes and early playstation 1 days, when games came out and people played them and either loved the game or the game sucked and would play another game. we would read the magazines to see whats coming and get excited for the games coming out and either a game was shitty, good or awesome and we all banded together but this shit, this shit that gaming has turned into where its nothing but vile pathetic fanboys who attack and troll instead of gaming and being part of something that we are all in, we are all gamers. its disgusting really. this isnt even a one sided issues, i get that there are people on all sides that all they do is troll and attack the opposite side but there is something about certain sony fanboys that seems cancerous and some of it seems like paid shills who pop up everytime to crap on xbox and sometimes in groups and many times in articles that arent even about xbox or ps just to crap on xbox like the link below proves. so i cant figure out if its truly pathetic fanboys or paid shills from sony.

conanlifts2490d ago

I don't understand the mentality. Sony has amazing exclusives coming up and everyone is praising them for this ( which they deserve). Yet in their next comments they talk about the ps5 and how it will be revealed and released in the next 1-2 years. Why do people want a ps5 so much at a time when sony is delivering the games. Especially when in other comments it is games not power that matters.

conanlifts2491d ago

The ps5 is 3-4 years away. It will not be discussed next year. They are not in a rush as they are already leading and outselling the competition. But just for info the quote regarding ps5 is below.

"Golem.de: This means that you are more likely to rely on a real Playstation 5 - whenever that will be?

Layden: Yes. It will probably be some time."

If they had planned to start discussing or releasing it in 1-2 years they would not be saying"some time".
Plus ps5 cant be done for around 3-4 years unless they release it either at $499 upwards or only as a small upgrade over xbox x. I think about 3 years.

BlackTar1872490d ago

Ps5 is coming out before 2021 October'ish 2019

conanlifts2490d ago (Edited 2490d ago )

@blacktar I agree that we will see a ps5 in 2020 or 2021. But I am 100% certain it will not be in 2019. Xbox X is selling at cost for $499. The next gen consoles need a more poweful gpu, more ram and a newer cpu ( which is more expensive). So if they did this by 2019 it would be priced above $499. Or it would only have a minor gpu upgrade over the X. Sony will not do a small upgrade over X. Also the ps4 has so many great exclusives coming up, why do so many people want a ps5 suddenly?

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil5d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19924d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop3d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom3d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor4d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog4d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit4d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

So they eventually don't pay their workers and depend on our tips to pay them like the case with waiters!

Deeeeznuuuts4d ago

That kind of practice is only normal in the states, as far as I know anyway, what a backwards system

H94d ago

No it's as well in a every country that wants to amercanize

bloop4d ago

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum3d ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

Jin_Sakai5d ago

Is this a joke? How about the big wigs giving up some of their pay for their hard working developers.

MrBaskerville4d ago

Maybe the CEO could earn his money based on tips.

The Reason Sega Lost The 32-Bit War? The 32X, Says Yosuke Okunari

"The company was unable to focus enough on its main hope"

timeextension.com
ApocalypseShadow9d ago

Nope. Going back to the 32X as the reason Sega lost that generation doesn't go back far enough before the Saturn.

Sega executives need to blame themselves as to why Sega lost that generation. Not Saturn. Not 32X. Not Sega CD. Nope. Executives were the reason why. It wasn't the hardware. Those devices were either dropped early or released to soon resulting in a developer backlash the hurt the game catalog. They really shouldn't have been made at all because they should have planned their next move more carefully. It has nothing to do with the devices. Poor leadership decisions and lack of unity within the company are what happened.

Love how blame is always shifted away from what is the truth. Writing a book placing the blame on the 32X isn't the truth.

solideagle8d ago

I am pretty sure there are documentaries (Youtube) around it which highlights these points. I had Sega Mega drive and NES growing up but that's about it. I didn't even know there was a war going on between these companies but I do remember thinking why I can't play Sonic cartridge on Nintendo or Mario on Sega :D

FinalFantasyFanatic8d ago

I had the Genesis and the Saturn, also had the SNES and 64, I never got a Dreamcast for some reason, but I never saw one in the stores either.
