Elite Dangerous PS4 Pro Support Detailed: No 4K, Supersampling or HDR at Launch

Frontier detailed the Elite Dangerous PS4 Pro support available at launch: two modes will be available, Performance and Quality, but no 4K, supersampling at 1080P or HDR support.

For the record, Elite Dangerous has been confirmed to get a 4K patch on Xbox One X when the console launches later this year.

What the heck?

Did MS pay for this or something? This is unacceptable! 😀

No, I don't think they actually did, still it's weird as all heck. I think tho that it has something to do with the One X, they wait until they can make a patch for it, then do more with the Pro as well. The game that is releasing next week is something they've been working on for some time now already in order for it to release. Am sure a patch is coming later. If not that would be severely crappy behaviour of this dev.

porkChop2868d ago (Edited 2868d ago )

There is a difference in performance between the two systems though. Maybe they just couldn't get the game running in 4K on the Pro? It's entirely possible.

Anzil2868d ago

This game is not that taxing and seeing it on the xbox one at the resolution its at...... This could easily be pushed 4k with checkerboarding. Its a loyalty game and i aint buying it hahha.

Anzil2868d ago

Ive read the article and its really click bait the game isnt at 4k but just lower so probably 1800p or something and has no HDR support for any console just like BF1 has no hdr or other similar games. They just havent specified so take OG comment with a grain of salt. haha

Aenea2868d ago (Edited 2868d ago )

Then they still should support the highest resolution possible and not just keep the game at 1080p.

Currently it's not exactly clear what their current Pro support entails but it sounds like that it's 1080p with better visuals or higher frame rate as the two options.

-----
@Anzil

I hope it's indeed in a higher resolution than 1080p on the Pro, would be weird if it wasn't. Still, the wording didn't seem to reflect such a thing. Guess we'll have to wait until Tuesday...

BrettAwesome2868d ago

The article mentions no supersampling, which is only relevant if the resolution is above 1080p

frostypants2868d ago (Edited 2868d ago )

Elite: Dangerous isn't that graphically impressive a game though. Space stations look cool but everything else is pretty plain, beyond some neat lighting when you get near stars.

fr0sty2868d ago (Edited 2868d ago )

HDR doesn't really cause much of a performance hit, however (which is why Xbox One S and PS4 standard both support it), so its omission from the pro version is suspect. Either they just needed more time to implement the upgrades or there's some money changing hands.

Liqu1d2868d ago

@fr0sty I'm pretty sure the Xbox version doesn't support HDR either.

Skull5212868d ago

Gonna be playing in 4K on my XBOX. Sony can keep their faux-K machine.

I don't care if it is 4k or not, but this games cries for higher resolution. Not going beyond 1080p is a disappointment. Really makes me wonder what they were doing all that time. It's already a year late or something. Elite was my favorite game on the Amiga. I would burn through weekends with that game... okey, but they support a "Performance" and "Quality" mode on the Pro. Not 4k, though.

R6ex2868d ago

ED will definitely benefit from higher res than 1080p coz the space battles occurs over great distances and all your enemy ships are at times just a tiny spec of dust far far away. Higher res will help you detect them visually as well as firing at them more accurately. PS4 Pro should've chosen higher resolution.

It will get patched but at the end of the day it will still run better on the one x. It's entirely possible they can't get it to run in 4K hdr on pro and are still optimizing. One thing for certain is that you're going to have to get used to multiplatform games just running better on the one x and that's just simply because of a. If power discrepancy (why the one x costs more) And remember that this is just a logistics issue where as Sony literally paid to have the Xbox one x version of destiny 2 held back because of the PS4 pro's lack of power... so ya know. One of these situations is more acceptable than the other.

....

Are you so dumb? LOL! "Cough" Ass Creed Origins 4K Checkerboard on Xbonex and PS4! And guess what, MS has a marketing deal with Ass Creed Origins. But hey, Ubisoft says PARITY! Yep, MS paid Ubisoft for parity.
Your post will be flagged as SPAM cuz you spew bullshit, Xbone fan.

beans2868d ago

I don't agree with him either but he is entitled to his opinion.

Aenea2868d ago (Edited 2868d ago )

Keeping it at 1080p on the Pro is severely silly as you should agree. Yes, the One X is more powerful, but it's crazy to think that the One X can run this at native 4k and the Pro can't go above 1080p!

And your Destiny 2 comment is ehmm, even crazier!

You have literally no evidence to support your claim that Sony paid Bungie to cripple Destiny 2 on the One X.

Besides that, basic math and simple logic would tell you that even the One X can not do what you and others seem to expect it to do with Destiny 2...

I've accepted that the One X is more powerful ever since it's reveal and that games can and probably will look better. How much so is to be seen and will be different for each games as well.

Now you should accept that the One X is not this powerful and magical device that can do things that are't possible...

The Destiny 2 engine supposedly uses the CPU for quite a lot of calculations. If you agree if that's correct or not or if you feel that other games/engines do more similar things is not relevant. If it does use the CPU so much than it stands to reason that the increased clockspeed is not going to make it do twice the amount of calculations, not even on a CPU with extensions that will NOT help with them.

That the same engine on PC's with much faster CPU's can do it doesn't mean the One X should be able to perform just as well, that's nonsense and irrelevant.

Basic math also tells us that the GPU needs to push 8 times the amount of pixels to go from 1080p@30fps to 2160p@60fps which should give you another reason why it might not be possible on the One X...

Ju2867d ago

Well...in all honetsty, he did not say it runs 1080p. Since they support Quality and Performance in the Pro version there is definitively Pro support. Maybe it's just some sub 4k res but not full 4K or he doesn't know. We'll see. It definitively supports HOTAS. And motion controls. Still cool.

And yes, I agree, the XoX will always have the edge, of course. But I disagree with Sony paying off devs.

A patch will come later I'm sure

ninsigma2868d ago

What's the size of the dev?? Might have something to do with it.

cartoonx12868d ago

yup same way as sony paid activision to cap xbox x version of destiny 2. /s

freshslicepizza2868d ago

Hmm, so you are not ok when a game is less impressive on weaker hardware but will defend actions like Destiny 2 being the same or better on the Pro as it may not even support native 4k on the Xbox One X? At least you all but confirmed it now which side of the fence you enjoy being on.

Aenea2868d ago

Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone I favour Sony over MS, am surprised you didn't see that earlier, perhaps because you're so busy attacking Sony and defending MS that you missed it!

It's still not confirmed yet how Destiny 2 will look on the One X, as you know Bungie can't talk about such things due to the marketing deal they have. If it turns out it will look less than the Pro version, then yes, I think people are right to be upset.

If Elite will stay 1080p on the Pro and be 4k on the One X then I also think people are right to be upset about it. Sure the Pro might not be able to do 4k on a game while the One X might, but that shouldn't be a reason to not try to get it to run on a resolution higher than 1080p...

Clearly you are okay with this which also shows to anyone who still didn't realise it what side you're on...

freshslicepizza2868d ago

@Aenea
"Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone I favour Sony over MS, am surprised you didn't see that earlier, perhaps because you're so busy attacking Sony and defending MS that you missed it!"

Favoring one over the other is not the problem, your judge of reasoning is.

"It's still not confirmed yet how Destiny 2 will look on the One X, as you know Bungie can't talk about such things due to the marketing deal they have. If it turns out it will look less than the Pro version, then yes, I think people are right to be upset."

That marketing deal was a waste because we already seen it being played on the PC. Even the guys at Digital Foundry are puzzled about it.

"If Elite will stay 1080p on the Pro and be 4k on the One X then I also think people are right to be upset about it. Sure the Pro might not be able to do 4k on a game while the One X might, but that shouldn't be a reason to not try to get it to run on a resolution higher than 1080p... "

Oh, what a turn of events! Now you want them to maximize the hardware when you did no such thing on the Destiny 2 topics. Like I said, its ok to favor one company but not at the expense of being contradictory.

"Clearly you are okay with this which also shows to anyone who still didn't realise it what side you're on..."

The PC you mean? Well I don't really need to worry about such things unless of course consoles are really holding back that platform.

xsta1ker2868d ago

the developers are very good the proless will get a 4k patch i have no doubts.

Liqu1d2868d ago

They probably just want to get the game out first.

Mbofa6om2867d ago

So did sony paid for all publishers to make the game works on xbo on 900p to look be better on ps4?!!
Its justv0.5 tflp between xbo and ps4
But its 2tflp between of xbox and ps4pro 😌
I'm sorry but resulotion war is for xbox ❤️

NobleRed2868d ago (Edited 2868d ago )

No supersampling lolz. Means the game looks exactly the same on a 1080p display. No matter if you play on ps4 or pro.

freshslicepizza2868d ago

This will continue to be a problem for the Pro and not on the Xbox One X as one does it through software and the other is done on the hardware itself.

Aenea2868d ago

Not correct tho since there's an option to go for better framerate or visuals on the Pro which the PS4 version will not have...

No buy then, keep digging your own grave devs.

Guyfamily9992868d ago

If a game doesn't have proper pro support I don't buy it (new, at least). Bare bones support (even just a straight 1440p) isn't much to ask.

Number_92868d ago

At launch is what you should be looking at. Here. It'll get patched.

2868d ago
PcRandy2867d ago

Maybe the pro can't do it at the higher resolution without the frame rate being affected so they are doing it at the most stable quality

Good game. Too bad they stopped console support.

Jingsing31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Seems a bit ridiculous that No Man's Sky was able to support all formats and this game couldn't. It didn't help that they were selling the game piece meal either. e.g. buy this expansion so you can walk on planets. I feel like the damage is done and they should probably shut the thing down.

The irony is No Man's Sky is what Elite used to be and can be played completely offline.

anast31d ago

You can still get a good 200 to 300 hours out of it on console, but I agree with everything you posted. It's really a shame because I like the art so much better than NMS.
