Sony says Spider-Man has the power to help them reach 100 million units in PS4 console sales

Sony CEO Shawn Layden says Spider-Man is “the biggest chance” to broaden the pie that is their customer base.

Sony hasn't done to well in the movie department when it comes to Spiderman but i have faith in Insomniac more so than Sony. The game looks great and Insomniac has not let me down yet.

MegamanXXX2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

Actually I think Homecoming is about to sell like hotcakes just because of his name and trademark. But I do agree with you that Sony has been struggling a little in the movie department in the past and lately. Spider-man and James Bond always helps them out a lot in revenue.

Omnislashver362915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

Homecoming looks like garbage. Tony Maguire still the best Spidey. Andrew Garfield was decent. This new one is turd though.

That aside the game looks epic.

BlackTar1872915d ago

Toby and Garfield were bad.

Lol two pet names

LAWSON722915d ago

Depends how you look at it, Spiderman 1-3 were huge and box office hits.

leeeroythe3rd2915d ago

Insomniac does make fun games. I didnt like the qte of the shown footage ... hopefully the rest of the game will provide depth

darthv722915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

Maybe i should have said, Sony hasn't done to well in the movie department when it comes to reboots. Their first and 2nd SM movies were okay, the 3rd and subsequent reboot / sequel not so much. Now this will be their 3rd try at making a go of the SM license. It's certainly can't do any worse than ghostbusters (that may be a bit tender still for some people.... *cough* bigboss *cough*).

Obviously that's the movie side of Sony though but they are trying to tie in the marketing of the game with the release of the new movie and vice versa so they do sort of go hand in hand (or web in web).

Genuine-User2915d ago

That's just not true. The only shoddy Spider-Man movie since Toby McGuire is Spiderman 3. Spider 1,2 and the amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2 were good movies.

thekhurg2915d ago

No darthtroll, this spider man has nothing to do with the homecoming movie.
No darthtroll, this spider man game being published by Sony has nothing to do with the movies distributed by another division of Sony.

Minimox162915d ago

@ Genuine-User
Im totally agree with you! but other people seems to hate amazing spider-man/
On topic, I believe this is possible, since i heard a lot in instagram and Youtube about non playstation User want soo bad this game, and the only place to play it will be in Playstation.

AspiringProGenji2915d ago

What does this have to do with the movie?

jugo142915d ago

what? I loved the first three spiderman movies. I thought they did fine. If I remember, they made a ton of money too.

donthate2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

Spiderman does look great.

@omni

agreed! Toby Maguire is the best Spiderman. I don't like the reboot either.

Goldby2915d ago

@Omnislash

Tom Holland is actually the closest to date to the personality of Peter Parker.

Toby's focused too much on the photography side, and andrews focused more on the science side with quirky jokes.

because Toms character is the younger actual high school version of Peter Parker, the smack talk he has more aligns with the comic books. perfect example is when he stops the winter soldier's punch, he remarks how cool the arm is while making it look like its but a simple paper weight

darthv722914d ago (Edited 2914d ago )

@genji... "What does this have to do with the movie?" are you not familiar with marketing tie-ins? The movie comes out soon and no doubt the success of that movie will spark interest in spiderman merchandise as well as games. What better game to get that attention than this one right here? Best part is Activision has no part in this. It's all Sony as the publisher.

Did you really need to have it explained?

@khurg, read my comment here to understand why yours is trollish... not mine.

@omni, Tobey was a good PP in the first two movies. The 3rd... not so much but that is the problem of them trying to hard with the emo side and venom. I liked the idea of venom but the way they handeled it wasnt thought out properly. And sandman felt tacked on.

Lately i have been watching the original late 70's spiderman live action tv show on youtube. Man that really takes me back. Cheesy but good.

MetalSuccAttack2914d ago

All rights to Spiderman movies and video games are owned by Sony since the PSOne.

AdmGenAladeen2914d ago

Every time I come on these boards I come across one of your comments that somehow, someway is more stupid that the previous one. It takes talent to do what you do and I gotta admit you're damn good at it. I got one question though, how do you manage to get even more stupid after every comment? There's gotta be a bottom line to your stupidity, right?

"Layden’s strategy isn’t to steal business from competitors, but rather to draw more people in the world of gaming, thereby growing the consumer base. "

Well said! This is the only way to do it well- to not compete at all instead carve your own path and be successful in your own terms.

Shawn knows that competition is a meaningless war. Success is as simple as doing what is good for the gamers, the game makers and the gaming industry.

This is what made the PSOne a breakthrough success in the first place-it did not compete with Nintendo or Sega for their own captive markets...PlayStation made its own market.

darthv722914d ago

@metalsuccattack, nothing wrong with what you said but I am just going to change some context and you let me know if it makes sense (just for fun)

Uh, last time I checked, Sony's still relevent in the movie industry.

Inzo2914d ago

The first 2 Maguire Spidies were very good with Spiderman 2 by far the best one to date in both movie and game but from Spiderman 3 it was down hill but this new game seems set to blow people's minds.

HeyNowChillax2914d ago

Yeesh, why all the downvotes? @DarthV72 is absolutely right. Spiderman 3 with Toby and everything since has been meh. The first Amazing Spiderman with Garfield before he snuffed Sony's head honcho was decent, but c'mon 2 reboots from 3 versions within 15 years! Sony totally mangled that franchise. Meanwhile Insomniac has produced many solid games over the years which have a special quality to them.

I'm sure the game will be good. I mean Insomniac is making it and most Xbox & PlayStation fans alike have heaped nothing but praise on their work.

Rimeskeem2915d ago

Insomniac makes incredible platforming games with fun traversal and combat. Spider-Man should be no different.

UltraNova2914d ago

I have absolutely no doubt that Insomniac's Spiderman will be 9-10/10 game. It has the same kind of quality vibe Horizon zero dawn had before release. You can bookmark my commnent and get back to me if it gets anything less than a 9.

Of course, but guaranteeing 100 million seems too optimistic now.

uptownsoul2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

@XiNatsuDragnel - "Of course, but guaranteeing 100 million seems too optimistic now."

Who guaranteed anything? They believe Spider-Man has the power to "help them reach" 100M PS4s..."help them reach" is not guaranteeing anything.

And for the record, I also believe Spider-Man has the power to "help them reach" 100M PS4s (key word being "help")

Genuine-User2915d ago

Spider-Man is the most popular superhero in the world. And if the new gameplay video is anything to go by, Spider-Man PS4 is going to be huge.

BlackTar1872915d ago

Is Spider-Man more popular then superman and Batman?

Genuine-User2915d ago

Batman, Superman and even Wonder Woman don't agree with that claim.

Of all the Sony's upcoming games I would be surprised if GT wasn't the game that helped Sony move the most PS4/Pro/PSVR units.

darthv722915d ago

Are you sure genuine? I know he may be the most popular in terms of marvel but I would think superman is more popular overall. then again the recent Bm vs Sm movie didnt help things so you may be right.

Why o why2915d ago

Not sure about wonder women or either super man for this generation. . Spiderman is probably more popular with the younger generations. Bat man I think is the most popular.

TKCMuzzer2915d ago

WelkinCole2915d ago

@blacktar

Yes for a long time Spiderman is more popular overall however with the batman movies Batman has become just as popular if not even more popular than Superman at least.

Imalwaysright2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

That's not popularity. That's the hero that sells the most merchandise. Literally everyone knows who Batman and Superman are. The same could be said about Spiderman but....

Spider-Man merchandise sells more than Batman and Superman combined (around the world) and you link social media statistics to prove your false point? lol

Significantly more sales mean less popularity?

KwietStorm_BLM2915d ago

It's trending faster than PS2 after only 3.5 years. Optimistic? Sounds realistic to me.

Imalwaysright2914d ago (Edited 2914d ago )

I edited my comment with another link to google searches in the past 9 years. Is that false as well? Just face it. Batman and Superman are the most popular and iconic superheroes. Everyone knows who the Bat is and everyone recognizes that S symbol.

Minimox162914d ago

Not only that those media link that Imalwaysright provide are from 2013 and Yes spider-man its by far the most popular hero and profitable

imtiyaz62914d ago

Superman and Batman maybe the most recognised superheroes but that doesn't mean they have more fans, as Spider-Man has a bigger fan base. Similarly, people around the world have seen the yankees' logo but they really don't care about Baseball. Kids everywhere find Spider-Man more relatable and humorous.

BlackTar1872914d ago

I was actually curious so I did some looking and I see spider man up there on some but I see Batman and super man being in the top spot more often. This all means nothing so I don't know if there is a right answer but id be willing to stake a huge sum of this fake money I got on superman being the most known comic book character of all time around the globe but on a yearly power ranking in the last 10 yrs I think Spider-Man and Batman are 1A 1B.

Anyways was just curious

_-EDMIX-_2914d ago (Edited 2914d ago )

@Imalwaysright- smh.

Please buddy, your comment reeks of SALT!

Spiderman for a FACT earns more. If they like it so much, why on earth are they not buying?

http://www.hollywoodreporte...

Sooooooo Spiderman merch makes basically almost 2x more then Superman and Batman....COMBINED!

So I'm not sure what meth you've been smoking bud.

Someone BUYING SOMETHING 2X MORE COMBINED then Superman and Batman means they hate it?

What measurement of popularity can you seriously go off of? Sales is the only real objective way of looking at this.

Someone isn't buying something they hate.

Its unbiased and only focuses on a solid number, not "feelings" or anything like that.

How many "likes" isn't a buy, someone isn't spending money to really back that data bud, simply means they like a trailer or a page, buying TRULY shows this fanbase. Trust me bud, when you are willing to part ways with your money, you clearly like something ENOUGH to justify such a move.

Those raw numbers making you upset so you jumping into "subjective" polls? Whats next? You going to link a video of some comic nerds saying who they like more?

Imalwaysright2914d ago

@ Blacktar

Yep. Superman and Batman are the most iconic superheros.

https://trends.google.com/t...

Spiderman sells more merchandise most likely because its the most kid friendly and because there is more merchandise for that character in general but in terms of popularity Bruce and Clark are the most iconic of them all.

The 10th Rider2914d ago

The data about Spiderman selling more merchandise is also post Disney buyout. Everyone knows Disney merchandises the s*** out of their properties.

Spiderman is a lot more family friendly too. I don't mean that in a bad way, but movies like The Dark Knight simply aren't going to sell nearly as much merchandise as movies like Spiderman 2.

My guess would be that Batman and Superman are more recognizable, but that Spiderman makes far more money.

Imalwaysright2914d ago (Edited 2914d ago )

@ Edmix

Salt? Don't pretend that you know me and please don't get your panties in a bunch because someone that you don't know has a different view on this matter. Relax, calm down. There is no need to insult me over such a trivial matter

Selling more merchandise doesn't mean that spiderman is the most popular superhero. All it means is that Marvel/Disney milk the the character to no end which those companies do.

Batman and Superman are the most talked about and searched superheroes around the internet for the past 10 years. Batman/superman videos have far more views on youtube than spiderman videos.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

http://www.tomsguide.com/us...

Why is that if Spiderman is more popular? Why do more people (definition of popularity) talk more about less popular characters? Why do people search more about Batman and Superman than they do Spiderman? Does that seem consistent with less popular characters? No, It doesn't because popularity isn't measured by the money you spend on something but on what MORE people care about and they clearly care to talk more about Batman and Superman than they care to talk about Spiderman. Make no mistake about it, both Batman and Superman are more popular than Spiderman.

"Trust me bud, when you are willing to part ways with your money, you clearly like something ENOUGH to justify such a move."

Yeah, your kids begging you to buy a spiderman costume or backpack.

I still remember when it was rumored and everyone assumed Sucker Punch would be the ones behind it. The fact it's Insomniac and not Sucker Punch has me extremely excited for it. Don't get me wrong but I love SP and the games they have made. But to see a group like Insomniac making this with the humor and crazy weapons they had in their other games gives me hope we will get the best Spider-Man game yet.

But they can dreamer Its is Free.

Eonjay2914d ago

Are you trying to be ironic?

Vbma2914d ago

No, are not you being very naive in thinking that Ps4 will continue to yield good sales even with the great attractions of Switch and Xox?

gokuss1220022914d ago

@Vbma

So you're getting Spiderman on the X.B.O.X?

Jeff2572914d ago (Edited 2914d ago )

Why would anyone buy a Xox for multiplats when they can get a PS4 or PS4Pro and play the same multiplats and also play exclusives you can't get on the Xox? Fact is XBox isn't getting Spider-Man or many of the other great exclusives Sony is known for. Now if Microsoft shows some great must have exclusives that can rival what Sony is producing then yes it may be worth getting. But currently they just aren't doing that.

The Switch on the other hand could sit right alongside a PS4 but honestly even that won't reach the numbers Sony has done or will do with the PS4.

That's very ambitious, I'm sure all the other exclusive games will help as well. I wonder how long it will take them to get to 100 million units.

Rimeskeem2915d ago (Edited 2915d ago )

Well, we all know when TLOU2 launches that itself could sell millions of units. Other exclusives could sell consoles. Ima say by 2020 100 million units will be passed.

Gamist2dot02915d ago

I think they can hit 100 mil by the end of 2018 if the PS4 slim drops to $199 by next summer.

The 10th Rider2914d ago (Edited 2914d ago )

@Gamist2dot0,

You do realize that to hit 100 million by the end of 2018 the console would have to sell around 70% more each month than the average of all previous months?

In average the console has sold around 1,400,000 a month since launch. There's 17 months left until the end of 2018 and it would have to sell about 40,000,000 more to hit 100,000,000. That means it'd have to sell (on average) over 2,300,000 each month over the next 17 months in order to hit 100,000,000 by the end of 2018.

At the current rate of sales it would take just over 28 months to hit 100,000,000. That would bring us close to the end of 2019. However console sales are almost always slowing down and 28 months is about the best possible scenario. I think it's safe to say that, though it's still possible for them to to make it by the end of 2019, it will be 2020 before they hit 100,000,000.

My bet would be that 100,000,000 shipped (not sold) by 2020 is about the best case scenario. They may hit 100,000,000 sold in the first half of 2020 but it's hard to say because we don't know if they've got any other plans hardware in the hardware department before then. (@Rimeskeem, I can see 100,000,000 sold in 2020. "By" 2020 is probably pushing it.)

People can disagree all they want, but if you look at the numbers you can clearly see that 100,000,000 by the end of 2018 is nigh impossible and would require an increase of sales that's simply unheard of.

Sony themselves said back in April that they've shipped 60,000,000 and are looking to ship another 18,000,000 over the next year. That'd be 78,000,000 in April of next year, meaning they'd have to ship another 22,000,000 in just 8 months. To hit 100,000,000 by the end of 2018 they'd have to nearly double their shipments in the second half of next year . . . And that's shipped, not sold, mind you.

The only way I can see all of that being off is if Japan suddenly has a complete turn around on home consoles. In which case millions of sales could come out of basically nowhere.

_-EDMIX-_2914d ago (Edited 2914d ago )

@Gamist- I don't know about all that. End of 2018?

They would yes have to drop that price, but even with God Of War, The Last Of Us 2, Spider man etc, I don't think that would likely happen. I mean, who knows, but that seems unrealistic.

I mean, they might be at 90 million by end of next year likely, I don't see room for 100 million though.

They'll get there as they have the teams, they have the momentum and have hit that number for home consoles more then any other company in history, simply that I don't see it in 2018.

@The10th- Shipped is sold. Sony, MS, Nintendo etc sell consoles to retail. Its a sale to them, they got paid before you even put your hands on the box to buy it.

The 10th Rider2914d ago (Edited 2914d ago )

@_-EDMIX-_,

To hit 90,000,000 by the end of next year they'd literally have to not slow down their shipping at all. That would be highly unlikely. Not "likely" as you said.

They're planning on shipping an average of around 1,500,000 a month from this April through next April.

That would bring them to 78,000,000

From there they'd have 8 months left to ship another 12,000,000

12,000,000/8 = 1,500,000

So IF sales don't slow down whatsoever, then they may hit 90,000,000 by the end of next year, but that's a huge if.

It is pretty neat to see people's world view blow up in front of them as they realize Microsoft has put themselves in a driver's seat that Sony hasn't been able to touch all generation.... What's even more pathetic is the same people downvoting you are the same people wishlisting Microsoft games on their ps5s 😂

It's a bunch of former 3rd party IPs.

Now even slowly returning to Playstation in some cases like Indiana, Hellblade, probably Starfield soon too, after they were made exclusively to Xbox on purpose.

Due to Microsoft's lack for own IP material except Halo & Forza. Which, the lack of, was the sole reason for all of it to happen in the first place anyway. Please don't pretend it wasn't.

And just look at all the games that come from Obsidian alone.

You really think Obsidian wasn't already working on Avowed and South of Midnight even without Microsoft buying Zenimax?

Microsoft delivered nothing but cheques.

@dveio THIS. Lol, this dude thinks Call of Duty wouldn't exist without Microsoft! smh 😂

Common narrative I see often — that Microsoft shouldn’t get credit for the games its studios release because they “just bought them.” But this viewpoint ignores key context and sets a double standard that other platform holders aren’t held to

No one is saying these games wouldn't exist at all without Microsoft. But let’s not pretend that having a trillion-dollar company backing a studio doesn’t make a massive difference. Obsidian never had AAA funding before the Xbox acquisition. Pillars of Eternity was crowdfunded, and their resources were always stretched thin. Now they’re working on Avowed, with proper support behind it.

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was made by around 20 people, using borrowed equipment and doing mocap in a boardroom. It was a passion project held together by tape and willpower. Today, Hellblade II exists because they were given resources, time, and freedom — something many developers don’t get unless they’re owned by a company that believes in their vision.

ZeniMax (Bethesda’s parent company) was in real financial trouble before the Microsoft acquisition. Reports and insider accounts have pointed out how much they needed a cash infusion. And while some people want to write off Xbox’s ownership of Bethesda titles, they forget the alternative could have meant layoffs or even closures.

The same goes for Activision Blizzard. Would you really prefer the company to stay under Bobby Kotick, after all the documented workplace misconduct and toxic leadership issues? Say what you want about Microsoft, but their acquisition brought accountability and change to a company that desperately needed it.

At the same time, Xbox gets hated on for doing what every major company does. Sony bought Housemarque, Bluepoint, Insomniac — but no one says Spider-Man 2 “doesn’t count” because of that. Why does Xbox get treated differently for acquiring struggling or undervalued developers and giving them a chance to thrive?

And the idea that Xbox locks games away is outdated. They're pushing cross-platform releases, cloud gaming, Game Pass, and backward compatibility more than any other platform holder. They're not forcing all studios into live service. If anything, their upcoming lineup is less GAAS-heavy and more focused on narrative and creativity — Avowed, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Fable, Perfect Dark, Towerborne, and others show real variety.

Whether people like it or not, Xbox is now the biggest publisher in the industry and owns the most gaming IPs. But what matters more is how they treat their studios. Most of these teams were previously stuck making AA games with limited scope — now they’re getting the tools and support to aim higher.

So when people say “Microsoft didn’t make those games,” they’re missing the point. It’s not about who started the studio — it’s about who enabled them to do their best work. You don’t have to love Xbox to admit they’ve helped a lot of developers and are taking a player-first approach.

Instead of writing off everything they do, maybe try recognizing the good they’re doing for both devs and gamers. At the end of the day, we should want more studios to succeed — no matter who owns them

I'm surprised Clockwork Revolution (BioShock meets Dishonored) isn't getting more media attention. The game looks interesting and reminds me of the old RPG games.

anast2d ago

The only good game on that list is Flight sim. The rest are either average or will be average. It's not a good look for MS.

TheEroica2d ago

My god.... Look how many comments are upset about microsoft's successes... 😂 This may be my new favorite thread. Not one gamer saying thanks for all the goodness coming their way, just bitter anger and downvoting the very games they themselves will purchase throughout 2026.... Sony really worked you guys over this generation.... Condolences.

@neutralgamer1992 You said what needed to be said.

I have heard for years from older gamers that fanboys are the biggest issue with any fanbase. They will defend or gloss over negative news as long as the correct logo is on the box and they bash the competing platform no matter how much good they are trying to bring.

Right now their advocacy for PlayStation is elevating that platform so high that Sony no longer believes they need to do anything to satisfy their loyal fanbase like they did in the PS4 days.

I just hope most of them will eventually start advocating for themselves and encourage others to do the same. No one should blindly support one platform because these companies do not care about anything other than profit.

Hunted

And first proper game done by the studio with proper AAA budget and saying it will be released when ready

Anast

I believe we went through this before that you are objectively wrong. Meta critic, user reviews, game sales. In Playstation top 10 best selling games were 5 from Microsoft studios

Otter

No this dude is saying so many other studios wouldn't be thriving without MS money and people would be getting abused physically and mentally with Bobby kotick and his side kicks

Also maybe look up how the original founder of Bethesda and zenimax was kicked out of his own company by his best friend lawyer. So that was always a shady place and had been struggling financially before MS paid a premium of almost 7 billion

Eroica

I use to be a die hard Playstation fan and now I only have a Pc. I see how these fans are so toxic. They just can't handle any positive news regarding Xbox. When the best selling games on playstation are Xbox titles. Look at Forza horizon being best seller and that's years old game by MS. I guess ms don't deserve credit for that success too since they are the only company in gaming making acquisitions

Forget the fact Sony paid 3.6 billion for bungie and MS 6.9 for zenimax. Which investment has turned out better

Destiny and marathon with a lot of controversy

While zenimax output is nothing short of amazing compared to what bungie has released

crazyCoconuts2d ago

Yeah it's tricky. "Xbox" has morphed to mean different things to different people.
Console, now Windows, GamePass, and the cross platform games. There's a mix of attitudes towards all those things individually, and maybe an overarching attitude towards MS. But can't argue that the game companies MS recently bought continue to flourish, and GamePass PC has been a great value over the last year.

They've had good output so far. So waiting for those games shouldn't be a problem.

Who cares if they're buy outs of companies or whatever excuse you want to make. They're games that are being distributed to other console. Play the games and enjoy it instead of fanboying or complaining.

ocelot072d ago

They going to be a he best and biggest publisher on Xbox, Playstation and PC next year. They not really said anything about Switch 2 though spite claiming to be big supporters.

quenomamen2d ago

If you call making one last Xbox before going full Sega, as Great. Then yea.

TheEroica2d ago

Doesn't feel like you're paying attention to what's happening.
