Sony's Defense Against Microsoft's Xbox One X Is Pretty Obvious

Every year at E3, it's the same thing. There are dozens of games, even more announcements, hands-on demos and oceans of swag. But the big matchup comes down to two companies: Microsoft and Sony. The platform holders for Xbox and PlayStation have been at it for years, their barely differentiated products forced to compete on showmanship and stagecraft. This year, Microsoft walked into the fight with a big new advantage: it had a new console to show off, and Sony didn't. And so yesterday Microsoft showed off the Xbox One X, previously known as Project Scorpio. Tonight, Sony fires back, or doesn't. Sony still has the opportunity to walk out of this fight the victor by doing the same thing it always does.

XBO X biggest problem is it unfortunately is going to be looked at as a $500 upgrade for the most core of Xbox fans, because MS showed absolutely nothing to show why the majority of current Xbox owners should spend $500 upgrading their current XBOs to the XBO X.

The current XBO owners who aren't flocking around gaming forums don't have any real incentive to upgrade. Most gamers don't have 4K TVs to warrant the upgrade, Super Sampling is nice but the majority of those gamers don't even know what it is, The XBOs already has HDR and 4K Blu Ray playback for $199 right now bundled with a game, and just so many other uneventful factors to the average Xbox user. There are benefits like the additional RAM letting games load faster (how much faster needs to be tested) and enhancing base XBO and 360 titles, but that's not worth $500 or for most current owners or the mass market casual-core who will see a $300 difference between the XBOs $199 price and the XBO X $499 price.

I honestly think MS should have just waited and rode out this year, and launched XBO X as a new console in holiday 2018. They could have got a much better CPU than the same Jaguar CPU we have now, they could have selected from a better GPU and pushed closer towards 8 TFLOPS, and they would have been able to have another full year to get backwards compatibility ready for it to make sure all games still worked, while also focusing all their developers on making new exclusives for the consoles launch, since what they had as exclusives this E3 were expected and for the most part lackluster IMO.

On top of that it could have still launched at $499, it would give them a next-gen head start along with price advantage for the next-generation (but eventually a loss to the PS5 in power), and actually gave them a console worth bragging about, rather than having a mid-gen "True 4K' console that can't play everything in "True 4K", and still has no heavy hitting AAA games to show off that "True 4K" besides Forza 7 (and patched games from years ago).

This holiday gamers will be looking for:

1. PS4 & Switch
2. XBOs > PS4 Pro (If it gets a $349 price drop) > XBO X > PSVR

Sony super fan Abizzel waiting a year to launch would have been a mistake. Contrary to the hopes and dreams of some Sony can't launch another console next year. That gives Microsoft the advantage of coming behind Sony the following year from here out with superior performance. What Nintendo should have done (though they seem to have gotten away with it despite the Wii U).

For Sony to launch next year it would require them to make a 1070+ level console in under two years. Not impossible, but it would be rushed. It would have to pull a Matt Damon and engineer the sh*t out of it. That could lead to mistakes. It would also probably cost. Though 7nm should be there next year and that would keep cost way down. But unless they make a huge leap in OS they probably will have to add PS4 parts for BC.

Why? Because most likely they would bump up the CPU to Zen. Which is different from Jaguar. Microsoft's OS can deal with that. Obviously PlayStation's can't. But they don't have Ultra bluray which is actually smart. But with no BC, it means another console under the TV. It's getting crowded under their for Sony fans. Especially in Japan.

It's just cost prohibitive for Sony to fast track another console. So Microsoft can safely leapfrog them for the time being. And given the obvious advances Microsoft has made, Sony would have to come back really hard. That will take a few years.

That I'm having two XonXs in my house, and I'll be happy with that because I enjoy third party's as much as I do exclusives, however I was more than delighted by the e3 conference and the 22 exclusive that got announced as well as the total of 47 games. Yeah people contained that Microsoft needed to shift it's focus to games, so they do and what a surprise they're still whinging lime 2 year olds.

I can't wait to play black desert online, sea of thieves, anthem, need for speed, assassins creed and more.

But no one can take away from what is happening with minecraft, that is some wonderful stuff and thought yeah that some announcements n half even though I don't play it.

I actually thought ubisoft and ea have stolen the show from any of the console devs as well.

To me it's just funny how power is everything now for Xbox fans. Before it was not important because games are important. Same was true during the X360 and PS3 era. I think you're mixed up. In the 360/ps3 era Xbox had better performing multiplats and early on good exclusives to boot and the Xbox fanboys gave ps owners a lot of shit for it. And let's be honest on both platforms games have always mattered but the technical aspects of the games is what has taken the spotlight. Fast forward to the start of this generation and the same Sony fanboys who screamed exclusive games over performance are now screaming res and Xbox fanboys are are now on the defensive. As for the PS3 and Xbox 360 era. Actually the Ps3 was more powerfull however it was hard to code for while the 360 was easier. That was the reason for better looking games on the 360 not because it was more powerfull. Everyone knew that and that is why xbox owners always said, it's games now power that matters. I agree with that. Always did. Yes, PS owners got carried away with power of the PS4 and the Pro but they also had the games on their side. I don't remember a PS fan ever saying it's power that matters not games.....unlike the xbox fans now do. Now all of a sudden it's all about the power. X is a serious piece of hardware for $499 though. Anthem was running on it for example and was gorgeous. Multiplatform? Yes, but that kind of fidelity can't just be ignored.

It has me excited for what Ms brings to it next year (as they didn't show much this one, Forza looked great like always but all racing games now do and crackdown is fun but no visual powerhouse). Sad that not much really shows why buy it this year, but some will. I'm one actually much like I did the Pro--I want the best and am willing to pay for it (if I have the cash, lol. I can afford this though).

It's like a Pro Pro, minus sony games which is really ps's biggest strength to begin with. First party made Sony what it is really and MS needs to grasp at that same idea. It has some great games but not as many or diverse. Sony for example didn't show much that was new (MS too) but they showed a lot more and a stronger showing with those previously announced games.

If MS can prove to more why x is worth that extra $100 next year it probably has a better place in the market than this one. I liked MS's show (has 2 of my top 5 games of conference, both third party and it's new tech) but Sony once again showed more first party which is more "why this than that" than power alone which most will follow.

Sony fans have already been enjoying the "fidelity".
It was also confirmed that some games are dynamic 4k.
They also confirmed that frame rates will be the same.
They also confirmed no vr support.
The issue is, Xbox one games in 4k will be just that. There is no magic added to a 720p/900p game being pushed to 4k on hardware that is 5x stronger...

The Xbox one x games will suffer because of the push for 4k. Settings will have to be turned down like crazy.

Did you watch the conference? The last thing they said before introducing the person playing (maybe playing as it's sometimes staged) was explicitly saying it was running on the Xbox One X.

Metro was the only game confirmed as running on a PC.

We already know that Sony withheld showing all their games! The biggest example that supports this is there was no showing of The Last of Us 2 or FFVII! The question is where were Microsoft's big Blockbusters!? Microsoft relied on 3rd party presence to prop up Xbox X's viability! Sony showed true 1st party exclusives with 3rd party presence support.

Well the PS3 was actually $600 with the bigger drive, that was nut's I did not buy one till they lowered the price and bundled it with a game and 6 Bluray movies if I remember correctly.

The original XBox360 did not have an internal drive originally although later iterations of the machine allowed a proprietary disk drive to be attached. The PS3 from release allows the purchaser to change the disk drive using standard parts without voiding their warranty. The PS3 was for a short time one of the cheapest Bluray players on the market.

The PHAT PS3 was also the first console to support backward compatibility across three console generations in that it could play PS1, PS2 and (of course) PS3. When the much cheaper PS3 Slim was released PS2 backward compatibility was not implemented (note my wording - it was not removed) although all PS3's can still play PS1 game media.

Personally I rarely ever used my PHAT PS3 (still works) for movies on Bluray or DVD since I preferred games which offered IMHO much better value for my money. Once you watch a movie it has very little replayability (subjective of course although videophiles will vehemently disagree) while many games can offer tens to hundreds of hours of entertainment per game.

Xbox One X is the strongest console power wise, no doubt, but consider this. The fastest car is only as good as its driver, just like the strongest console is only as good as its games. Sony has the better driver.

It's all about the games. I didn't see much of anything coming to Xbox One X which is surprising. Nice hardware, but without the exclusives we're just looking as resolution bumps and slighter better effects similar to PS4 Pro. That being said $499 is a lot to pay for an upgrade.

Why announce a new console when the current console is selling at an unprecedented rate? Sony knows that the PS4 is still selling well and if they announce a new console, that will halt there PS4 sales. That is a stupid move. Sony did what they've been doing and that is to release new games. Their E3 is nothing compared to what they showed last year but they showed enough new games and exclusive to keep their fan base happy.

By the time the XB1x is released in November 2017 the PS4pro will be $150 USD cheaper and both the PS4slim and XB1slim will be at least $250 USD cheaper.

I've got a pC as well, but I know I'm in the minority as far as my set up. A lot of PC gamers also have a console, but the reverse I've found to not be as frequent. Console gamers typically don't also have a gaming PC. So while someone like me got to sell my X1 and only miss out on one game (sunset overdrive) I doubt that's the case for most console gamers.

Once I saw Metro, Battlegrounds, and Anthum was like finally XB has come out to play those look to be major exclusives we got a true battle! Only to realize during Conference it was only for launch window and will come to PS4, (and some were even running on a PC) not X1X. Then the price $500, oh boy good luck to em.

I saw some good games, a great one (and some not good ones) we'll eventuallly get to play in the future from Sony and I saw the some amazing hardware from ms that will run all games available better - old and new. Ironic that power used to be the Sony defense. I also think people totally discount the fact that 3rd party games are the most ubiquitous and yet fanboys place ALL of the importance on exclusives. So. Those 2-3 major exclusives every so often are more important than the onslaught of huge multiplatform AAA games that release constantly?? What about that huge library you amassed before gen8.
