Xbox Live Arcade Revenues Skyrocket

It looks like Microsoft’s "Summer of Arcade" has been a smashing success, with the company seeing a 58% increase in unique users downloading digital content over the summer months. The company also reported a 67% sales increase in August thanks to high profile releases such as Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Castle Crashers and Braid.

Marc Whitten, general manager of Xbox Live, was certainly pleased, declaring Microsoft’s crush of content to be a resounding success:

"The debut of the new strategy proved to be a huge success, with the Summer of Arcade making August the highest grossing month to date. But the focus on quality games doesn’t stop with the Summer of Arcade. We have plenty more great titles coming out in the next few months and beyond that we think will continue to fuel this incredible momentum."

The key phrase in there is quality games, as a big reason why revenues were up so much was due to the sheer caliber of games being delivered. I know August was a particularly rough month for my online wallet, as I dumped well over 3,000 MS Points back into Microsoft’s lap in a two-week span just to keep up with all the great games that were coming out.
