SCEA: Killzone 2 in latter half of 2007

In a recent interview with SCEA's Peter Dille, Killzone 2 is mentioned briefly as one of Sony's upcoming titles to release in the second half of 2007.

"I think we have a good first half of the year. Games like Lair that people are really excited about. MLB is coming out and is looking great and is the best-selling sports game from a first-party studio. Motorstorm. Heavenly Sword. And don't forget you have games like Killzone in the back half of the year. We're not really saying that there is one game that consumers have to wait for. I think that the content is there now and the content is coming. It's going to be a steady stream of really great PlayStation 3 content," stated Dille.

There will be a steady flow of quality games coming to the PS3. Even though Raiders only mentioned the exclusives, there is still plenty of games coming that would make it worth paying $600 for. Not everyone will think that, but the more quality games that start to come out the more people that will be willing to spend that much. And it's not that far off. March is a big month for Sony. Europe launch and new games, hopefully it'll be good.

I couldn't agree more. As little as six months ago on this site people were touting the nex-gen race as a "marathon". However the rules seemed to have been changed since the Christmas season shinanigans and fistfights. It's as if one month decided the entire race for some. People were already shouting "we won this", "the war is over", blah. People forget that Playstation is the console game leader. Period. Until that achievement is taken away from them by force -- it's ignorant to think that the titles coming for the PS3 and even the mighty PS2 in 2007 are nothing less than pre-cursors to a long list (converging to the P3) of games to come from a comapany that knows a thing or two about pumping out GAMES. A lot of people dogged KZ I. It was one of THOSE games. Either you hated it or loved it. All I know is that the lobbies are still full today with gamers that love to blast in the park, beach, creek, slums,or orbital station. I think that the man vs. man aspect is part of the draw, but also the grittiness and realism of re-loads and cartridge ejection from the shell chambers of the guns that make it so kick ass. The sounds of the weapons are great too. For this to be realized on the PS3 with vast improvements has a lot of PS fans on the edge of their seats waiting to see what Guerilla is going to do to this game. I wish there was some in game footage available or even an actual screen would be nice. No doubt that the wii and 360 will have good games coming this year, but for a wicked variety of games -- 2007 looks to be the the year the PS3 comes out of its shiny shell. =]

Im a playstation fan but i gotta say, i think Killzone 1 kinda sucked. Especially after playing Halo. However, it has a real cool feel and a lot of potential of where it can head. It also has a great story background. The E3 Killzone 2 trailer really showed what a cool game this can be. Even though i think Killzone 1 sucks, i can sense that Killzone 2 is having alot of work put into it and that it will be a good game. Its gonna be one of those games where it'll either trounce Halo 3, match it, or stunt Halo 3's sales, but i don't think it will be a complete failure. Sony's pushing this game like no other

Your right about RockStar. They hold back on the GTA info for some reason. They have done this with previous games. Nobody thought it would come out on time because they hadn't seen much on it. But the game still came out and was a huge hit.

However, I doubt that Killzone will make it out this year. The guy barely mentioned it in passing. It is probably another mistake that will be retracted later. They will probably show something on the game around when E3 was, but I doubt the game will be out this year.

Once you got past the hype, Killzone was an "ok" game with an amazing back story. Incredible art direction and awesome villains (Come on!! The Helgast look badass) and tons of "potential".

Thats why people are looking forward to it.

I think there are two potential reasons for no in game shots or vids of Killzone.

Reason 1: It really IS as good as the concept video

Reason 2: It is close, but not as good

I think if it is reason 2 the devs want as much time as possible to try to raise the bar to get the game to look as good as the video.

If it is reason 1, then we will find out soon enough. It is just that Sony doesn't want to tip their hand just yet.

Only time will tell at this point. I must say that I do not envy the developers for Killzone at all. They have been placed in a very precarious position of now having to prove themselves. Even if they manage to get close to the target renders, for some this simply will not be good enough.

Especially when you ask the question, if Sony "doesn't want to tip it's hand" now, why the heck not? they need some good publicity and more reasons for gamers to buy the system. A Killzone even anywhere near close to the target render would really give them the boost. Right now is a very important time to overcome the idea that the pS3 is just on par or less powerful than the 360. And sitting on footage like this would be idiotic.

With each build more and more people got excited and hyped about it. Both ways have their pluses and minuses. Personally, I would like to wait and see a near final build instead of an early build first.

...how many people even care about KillZone 2. I mean, if it comes out looking like what they showed a while ago, I can see it doing something. But, the way things are going, it'll probably be a prettier version of what the first one looked like, plus a better, but still shoddy, online service.
I want to see some in-game footage before anyone says anything ridiculous like "this will challenge Halo 3", or "KillZone will be a stomp 2 the game industry". I'm a gamer who LOVES FPS's. Those are my kind of games, just like some people love fighting games, RPG's, etc.. If you aren't into FPS's then you won't be into Halo.

Halo didn't necessarily do anything different or better than any game before, but what it did was do each of those things right. The weapons balance was great. The smooth gameplay was great. The graphics were great. The story was great. The AI was great. The map designs were great. The speed of the game was great. On and On. I'm NOT saying any of these one things were the BEST, but they were all great. There are a lot of FPS's that do one or two things great, but miss the mark on other aspects. Halo did essentially everything great.

One main thing that Halo brought to the game world was introduce the standard for multiplayer matchmaking on a console.

Anyone that says Halo blows and sucks balls compared to any other game is just ignorant. People don't spend 125 million on launch day for crap, or just based on hype. So, don't even go there...if you didn't like the games then that's fine, but there are 4 million gamers that'll disagree.

Then how bout the fact that the NES wooped the @ss of the Sega Master System even though the SMS looked better (it was technically superior to the NES, and btw I was a Nintendo guy, and hated Sega), and how bout the Genesis beating out the SNES? even though the SNES was technically more powerful? is first to be as close to the tralier that`s possible, which is a given ( i think regardless of what they show, it`s not gonna live up to the first one anyhow ).

The second is a better framrate, hopefully a stable one. It can`t run like the game on PS2, it was simply too unstable.

A multiplayer that`s acctually fun would be welcommed additon, as the first one didn`t have one ( havn`t played the online bit, so can`t comment on that)

I think the overall gameplay needs more varriasion too. It suffered from the same problems as Black, it was only shooting. I have heard it`ll have some drivable bits which is a step in the right direction.

I would want the opption to choose which of the 4 sublevels within each level, i would want to play, insted of having to play through 3 other ones to show off something in the last one. That would probally make the game seem biger too, more levels in a way.

For the hole Halo vs. Killzone comparison, i don`t think Killzone is going to be better than Halo based on what`s know at this point. Don`t get me wrong, Killzone on PS3 can turnout good, but Guerilla has not made a game yet on a Halo-scale. Their recent game was a very good one ( Killzone Liberation on PSP ), so they can make it, but i needs some in-game tralier ( i guess the new E3 would be the place to show the real over the fake ) to make me belive in this titel again.

atmosphere, length and depth of the campaign mode, and strong AI. There's a reason that Halo 1 and 2 had absolutely no AI-controlled characters in multiplayer mode.

The Killzone team, based off their forum posts and interviews, is very aware of both the positive and negative aspects of their PS2 title and have worked hard to rectify those problems.

Their AI division is exponentially larger, and unlike Killzone 1, multiplayer (both online and offline) is being worked on from day one rather than being tacked on at the last minute. The KZ team says that the game looks like the trailer, and insider sources have said that it looks 99% as good as the original trailer.

What made that trailer so damn impressive was the quality of the animation (especially facial expressions), the physics, and the AI. And if they can pull it off, we're in for a hell of a treat come Winter. Awesome graphics help too.

I would focus on steady fps, multiplayer, and more variation between the 4 classes, if they`ve kept that for this one.

explained advantages of a PS2 game seems, oh I dunno, like a horrible strategy? I own both games, so I'm making a very accurate comparison of both titles.

Halo 2 wins in terms of multiplayer, framerate, and online stability (great soundtrack too). But my friends and I who've played Killzone know how much more intense that game is. In fact, if you want to improve on your aim for both weapons and grenades, I recommend playing Killzone's multiplayer.

Me and my roommate improved a lot after traing in KZ before coming back to Halo 2. I guess it's because KZ has much more sensitive controls. Once we got on Halo we started jacking up the sensitivity settings 'cause it felt so slow. Kinda like switching between Burnout and Gran Turismo.

I don't know why Sphinx is defending Halo's storyline so passionately since not many people actually care about it. Halo 2 was chopped in half, so the ending just made people go "whatever" to the campaign mode. Hell, my friend didn't even have to fight the last boss to beat the game; his AI teammates did the job for him (he still can't get over that).

Halo has a few things going for it that other FPS games do/did not. I am bringing up just a few key points to answer all those who do not see or understand why Halo is so popular.
1. The story is actually a lot more in-depth than a lot of people give it credit for. Have you read the books? No? Then shut up. Oh, you don't want to read the books? Fine, but don't crap on the storyline, because you're just neglecting to let it draw you in.
2. Online. Yes, online. No other game before it had such an easy to use online interface.
3. The vehicles are as easy to use as walking around, but require some skill to master. I can whoop some A$$ with the ghost, but not very good with the warthog for example. What other game has vehicles that are this much fun in multiplayer?
4. Fan base. Yeah, sorta redundant, but Halo is a lot of fun because there are so many people to play with!

How can you say any of this? This is all speculation. Yes ps2 is outselling the ps3 - it's got a huge catalogue of games that has taken years to produce. And it's only £100 (prob less in the states). The ps2 is outselling the xbox360 as well...but there will come a time when ps2 owners will want to move to ps3 because simply the games will stop being made. Hdtv's will be in a lot of homes...and the games available will be growing at an incredible rate, just as it has for the xbox360.

I mean it took the xbox360 a year to really show what it was capable of with Gears of War - which is outstanding..and the first gen ps3 games are better looking than the first-gen xbox360 games - so why shouldn't the ps3 improve also? It's clear that both will continue improving graphically - I mean God of War 1 and 2 which are amazing looking games and light-years ahead of the games first seen on the ps2...and still only running on 32mb RAM!

We know the Killzone 2 trailer was not in game...and neither was Motorstorm. But we have seen how bloody close Motorstorm has gotten to their target render...insanely close. I mean it looks incredible. So who knows about Killzone 2 - but I feel it really won't look quite as good, or 'play' as good as the interacticity of the trailer shown.

And really...was killzone that well recieved? or that good a game? I'm not sure...it seemed pretty average to me...though I'm not too much of a fan of those type of games. - Halo included - I'd be interested to know whether the fan base of Halo is bigger than Killzone - being since there were only 24million xbox's and 100million playstation 2's...anybody got any stats of game sales?

I think the games coming up for Playstation 3 are really exciting...and I'm still holding out for it. Motorstorm, MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII and Versus, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden Sigma (the screens look immense and they have started from scratch to build this for the ps3), and games coming to both systems like Assassin's Creed, Army of Two, Dark Sector...and I'm a huge fan of God Of War...so I'll look forward to the third in 2000-and infinity...

Also atleast sales wise Halo 3 is going to take over November and December (just like when Halo 2 came out) and GTA 4 is going to own October. What's interesting about Killzone 2 vs Halo 3 is the fact very little is known about either game and there both gonna be huge games; at that the best part is due to very little being known about the games, that will mean they wont be able to combat what the other game developers are putting in there game, so all in all this should be cool! Yeah they're getting some good games. But it is the case and really is going to happen that ps3 is going to get some amazing games. Really why wouldn't they? They have more reason to than xbox360. One little random piece of information I read from a developer of both systems...is that since the ps3 has a harddrive in every system (unlike the xbox360) then it can be utilised for cache - speed of loading and taking a little bit of steam off the rest of the system allowing for improvements elsewhere...interesting non?

GameBattles are the name of the game for this title. PS2 and PS3 versions of this game will share that aspect of fun for the title, but I believe the campaign play on the PS3, from what I've heard will be deep and multi -episodic. Stellar! How cool is that?!

The MP in the game is very fun whether you play in the canyon with a 7 man based squad vs. the other or in the Park with a 2 man squad vs. 7 on HARD that is a very fun challenge, but doesn't touch the KZ online universe.

I must also add that the campaign was very fun and Challenging to play through. Yes it suffered from framerate issues and it wasn't on the polish side of Resistance or Halo, but ya see, it didn't have to beat Halo and that's where SNE went wrong. All it had to do was be KILLZONE, that's all. It stood apart from Halo (and now Resistance) in that you're essentially fighting MEN not aliens. That's what I love about SOCOM. Men fight Men. Add in the superb realism of re-loads and cartridge ejection from the shell chambers of the guns that make it so kick ass with the processing power of the PS3 and this thing could really lift brows. The trailer surely did and thats a fact -- so don't think this game won't garner boatloads of attention once interim builds start to surface. The sounds of the weapons are great too. The game is very entertaining and check out the user ratings on gamespot sometime (8.2) and its rank among 35,000 games is not bad at all for a 2004 PS2 sleeper; compared to the 6.9 from the initial Gamespot reviewrs. The readers said 8.2 and think af those that didn't vote for it that are still playing today! Like I said you're gonna love it or hate it -- its just one of those kinda games, very polarizing period. It took my cousin (who would make the xbot fans on here look like a bunch of girl scouts) nearly a year before I convinced him to play the game online. Once he did -- he went out and bought the game, headset and joined a clan (PIC). He loves it and can't wait for II. Why? because he's a gamer. Most of the people on this thread have never even fired a bullet on the game so their opinions are invalid. They just read or "heard" that it sucked so they just throw it in the wastebasket w/o further review ala ManHunt. From one who has spent a fair amount of time on the game and watched it evolve online literally (dev. Viper99 is always looking for gamer driven feedback and ways to inprove the online experience to this day for a 2004 "sub-par game"), I recommend that you rent or buy it -- play it through, then jump online and look for me. You know the name or look for Drivn1. You'll be pleasantly surprised. It's gritty, loud, addictive and fun as hell. The online play makes its replay value soar. The KILLZONE crowd is akin to a dark underground cult that is lying in wait to pounce on the new Guerilla offering. Dude I've got NBA 'o7 NHL '07, NHL2K & NHL2K. The first two games are like silky butter on these screens in HDMI. There's no comparison. Maybe that's why they're on display at Bjorn's. I`ve got to say i disagree on the MP,i don`t think it was that good but maybye i`ll try the levels you recomended with the settings. I also need a good fps to fully enjoy a multiplayer, something Killzone struggles with, but glad you found some fun in it ;)

And to be fair, it was the press that said Killzone was going to be a Halo-beater, not Sony ( they hoped for it maybye, but that`s a different thing ). As i recall it was described as a Medal of Hounor- type game by them, but comparrisont to Halo is probally because it was Sony`s attempt at a First person Shooter.

This is what I'm waiting for. I have wanted KZ since E3 05. I don't care what system you like, I know you want KZ to be sweet. The first KZ was garbage from my point of view. I'm not a Sony fan and I don't give a "F" about loyalty, but If KZ is sweet I will be getting a PS3. Like I have been saying before viva la Killzone PS3 (e3 05 version). This is like the only PS3 game that I'm looking forward to.

Dude, get over yourself. Halo was ohkay AT MOST...but compared to other games like Battlefield 2 or even Prey...it's boring as frick. I gotta sorta agree with DJ and say i always bump up the sensitivity on Halo...but that's not due to Killzone. It's because I PC game...and those are actually FAST-PACED...unlike Halo. I don't like it because an FPS has to be either fast or strategic...Halo is neither. And...the storyline sucks. You can say all you want about it, but...it sux.

GodofGaming...dude, the only way it could beat out what i've seen of KZ2 is if they created a new 360 with a Cell processor and had fanboys buy it out before they found out KZ2 was better.

Killzone 2 way to hard. Part of the reason i HATE halo is all the hype surrounding a game that is average at best. Story is awful, action is not all that great. Point A: shoot aliens Point B:shoot some aliens Point C: More of the same. Online is it's best feature as it is pretty fun. Resistance falls under the same Category. Overhyped average games. Except Resistance has a better story.
There is such a thing as to much PR and Killzone 2 falls into that category. When we get we'll like it but once it's over we'll be saying "is that it."

First off, Killzone 1 was a mediocre shooter at best. The reason this game received such bad reviews (worse than it deserved) was because Sony ran with the "Halo Killer" tag that this game didn't deserve.

In the long run though, the "Halo Killer" tag worked out pretty well for Sony. The game sold over a million copies very quickly.

I bought it, played it (online was "meh" at best), and traded it in before it dropped to $20 at retail. And never looked back.

So now we have all of this hype built up around a pre-rendered video that was shown over a year and a half ago.

Looks like Sony will sell its million copies but I still have no hope that the game will be this great shooter experience.

No one knows squat about this game. So as of right now the negative press surrounding it is warranted. Show us something! Just a screenshot even!

The only thing we have to compare this game with at the moment is Killzone 1.

Guerilla didn't preview it as a 'halo killer'. The media simply came up with that title and plastered it onto the title in every single preview. Only OPM had the balls to come out and say "We don't know what these other journalists are smoking 'cause this game is absolutely nothing like Halo."

I've seen 360 fans actually accuse Sony for things that Microsoft did, such as the Toy Story 2 graphics statement. Yeah, Bill Gates said that. The original Toy Story claim actually came from George Lucas, not Sony. And the list goes on and on.

Havok released a new games physics engine that will fully utilize the PS3 Cell Processer, and from what I read, that will boost it's processing capability from five to ten times, in theory. As it stood with the 4.0 release of the physics engine, the ps3 was comparable with a TRIPLE CORE engine, this upgrade will indeed help to make the gaming capabilities truly Next Gen.
