The Shooters of 2017 - From Destiny to Wolfenstein, What Flopped and What Flew?

Regardless of your views on Destiny 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, or Call of Duty: WWII, 2017 was certainly an interesting time for shooting games as companies and consumers clashed on microtransacions.

Good article! Good year for shooters.

unfortunately very few shooters have compelling stories, so the single player campaigns are basic steps to the multiplayer, which to keep generating revenue are filled with DLC , DLC on the disc , loot boxes , and other cosmetic upgrades. Fighting games do this now with DLC characters, pay to dress up costumes, loot box power ups.... Its all about how much cash can you squeeze from your loyal fanbase before they abandon you, or maybe they wont.... This is why the bell has been sounding for the single player game....there has been no way to find a way to keep squeezing money from fans except for additional story DLC....which wont sell if the original story was not good or too short. Uncharted a great story experience had to add 'shooter' multiplayer to installment #2 to keep going...Cash is king and if a game isnt a hit out of the gate with many ways to keep generating that cash its dead in the water...

NotanotherReboot2684d ago

Uncharted 2 multiplayer was good. leave it be

Wolfenstein II is awesome. Just finished the campaign and I'm going after the Ubercommanders now. It's the way story based shooters should be built.

TheRacingX2683d ago

I totally agree, great game, the new order and the old blood were great too.... problem though.... sales dont reflect how great the game is....and THAT is sad.... deserves big numbers

jc122683d ago

I was shocked, but I ended up not liking Wolfenstein II at all. I played it for a couple days and then deleted it. I found the gunplay loose and imprecise. Aiming down sights was also a mess as the guns were so big and cumbersome they'd obstruct my target; It didn't help matters that the guns also had insane recoil.

Enemies also felt like bullet sponges at times too, especially when using the submachine gun. I don't know, I guess I was surprised, because I really liked the first game. The graphics and story were top notch, but the gunplay just didnt work for me.

I found Wolfenstein 2 to be the best shooter this year. The sequel was not quite as good as the original from 2014 but it was still a fun single player experience enhanced by the opportunity to slay Nazis in a game.

I have played Call of Duty from the first game released on PC and I could not help but compare COD WW2 with the first five or six WW2 Call of Duty games and, unfortunately, as good as it was, it was just not as good as the first 2 or even COD: World at War. However, a return to the WW2 era was very welcome and I hope the next one will aspire to be more and better.

Battlefront 2 was ruined by EA with loot boxes and trying to squeeze as much as the company can from gamers. I gave it a miss like many others for good reasons. Will EA learn? I doubt it.

Ghost Recon Wildlands Is Still 2017’s Top Selling Video Game

Today, Ubisoft released its sales figures for the fiscal quarter ended June 30, 2017. And surprisingly, Ghost Recon Wildlands is still 2017’s top selling video game. For Honor was 2nd on that list, but it has fallen off since.

How are the riots coming along?

Grown Folks Talk2843d ago

The freedom of choosing when & how to tackle things is what I enjoy most. Playing with my friends & coming up with different methods to tackle a situation. I also enjoy shooting a member of either faction & making them think it was the other. Cleared an entire mansion minus 1 guy that way once.

-Foxtrot2843d ago

How?

I've hardly heard anyone I know even play this and the majority of them are all on different games from each other

DaDrunkenJester2843d ago

Filthy Europeans.... that's who :P

-Foxtrot2843d ago

Brexit...it's been hard you know

Eating Turnips...playing Wildlands....drinking toilet wine

freshslicepizza2843d ago

Depends on the year, some toilet wine is actually pretty good.

CrimzonRazor2843d ago

well sales numbers suggest there's ALOT of people playing, maybe you dont know that many people. Have you reached out to everyone of your millions of friends to see if they are playing ghost.

SoulMikeY2843d ago

lol, that last sentence tho....

The 10th Rider2843d ago

What other AAA multiplatform games have come out this year? Prey?

The 10th Rider2842d ago

I dunno who disagreed, but I'm genuinely wondering about it. I guess there's Resident Evil 7 and Mass Effect Adromeda, but considering Resident Evil is horror and Adromeda had such a poor reception, I would expect Wildlands to sell more. There's not really a whole lot it's competing against.

Lord_Sloth2843d ago

I play, my family plays, my friends play, people I don't entirely know play. *shrug*

nucky642843d ago

really. EVERYONE I know is playing (or has played) the hell out of it. it's great fun. my only complaint was narco road -that dlc was "meh". but, fallen ghosts made up for it.

_-EDMIX-_2842d ago

So basically you're saying you know the entire Gaming Community 100%?

Seriously can you please stop assuming that you know every single last gamer thus can determine a game success based on who you know playing a game

that might be the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time it's so self-centered it's not even funny.

I hardly have any one on my friendslist that I know that plays FIFA yet it is one of the best selling sports games every single year.

So that's not perplexing to me, I think I have enough common sense to realize I do not have the entire world as my friends list.

I seriously thought you would have been smart enough to realize that.

Really? I haven't seen anyone playing this or talking about this game since it's first few weeks. I've wanted it but I'll wait for black Friday for it to be 20 bucks, the last couple Tom Clancy games have been subpar this generation. Looks interesting though.

RememberThe3572843d ago

Unless you play with friends it's bound to be disappointing. Without co-op this game is bland and boring.

Cmv382843d ago

wrong. I loved this game in co op with friends, but playing with the ai at times had its advantages. They don't miss when they shoot. It was a great game either way.

nucky642843d ago

I disagree - I like playing with friends and in SP.

CrimzonRazor2843d ago

takes seconds to get a group toghether with the match making system ingame, by far the best clancy game this gen. Its well worth the asking price.

TheFirstClassic2843d ago

I meant you need friends to play with to really get a lot out of the game, I guess I should have worded it better.

TheFirstClassic2843d ago

Definitely needs co op, but pretty fun with it.

CrimzonRazor2843d ago

Lol the game has had 4 player co-op since it came out unless you are talking about splitscreen but not much supprt for that anymore.

_-EDMIX-_2842d ago

What do you mean by Tom Clancy games? I mean you do understand that all those games are different genres and made by different teams correct? I mean that's like saying you didn't like Rainbow Six Siege so you're definitely not going to like ghosts Recon wildlands lol

Please buddy , do not generalize the Tom Clancy games as if they're one thing.

Summons752842d ago Show
_-EDMIX-_2842d ago

@summ- ???

Why do you always take everyone's post so emotionally? Relax! It seems like anytime somebody has a different opinion as you you're basically typing with tears in your eyes.

My statement is pretty simple the games you're talking about are made by completely different teams.

They're all made with completely different purposes one is a post-apocalyptic MMORPG , the other is a Sandbox strategic stealth shooter with Co-op option and the other is a first person shooter multiplayer game.

None of those games are made by the same developers and none of those games are even made for the same purpose which actually means they have very little to do with whether you will or won't like the next Tom Clancy game.

I mean for all you know the next Tom Clancy game is a narrative single player first person shooter.

So why would you base whether you buy that game or not based on games made for different purposes in different genres by different Developers?

Tom Clancy is not one thing.

I'm going to ignore the personal attacks because they're completely immature and uncalled

seriously control your emotions, it's not that serious we all have different opinions.

The game is good, nothing innovative but its a fun game.

A solid 8 out of 10

_-EDMIX-_2842d ago

I had a good feeling about this game when they first showed a couple demonstrations because I saw a lot of Metal Gear Solid V inside of it in regards to layout and concept.

The vehicle choices, the ability to approach the situation being able to tag people, being able to wait until night time, there was just so much features that I could definitely see how the stealth element in real time could play in because I absolutely loved Metal Gear Solid 5 for those features.

Love Wildlands. Understand why people hate it, being so repetitive, but on extreme difficulty with no HUD it really comes alive.

Joel_Drake22851d ago

There's really only so many games that qualify as action games this year (at least off the top of my head). It makes sense some less than stellar games would make the cut.
