Microsoft unveiled its own wireless controllers for Windows 10 VR and mixed reality

The controllers are coming "this holiday," and will come packed in with Acer's headset for $399.

Vasto2959d ago (Edited 2959d ago )

Now that is how its done.

$399 for the head set and the controllers!

I said that VR will not take off until Microsoft gets involved and I am sticking to it.

christocolus2959d ago (Edited 2959d ago )

And it's important to note that they require no external cameras to work with full tracking, which is pretty amazing. It will come bundled with the Mixed Reality headset for $399

Cupid_Viper_32959d ago (Edited 2959d ago )

@Vasto

"I said that VR will not take off until Microsoft gets involved and I am sticking to it." Hopefully, you get over yourself soon.
http://www.roadtovr.com/est... "Estimated 25 million steam users now have VR ready-gpus.

http://www.roadtovr.com/201... "Record breaking VR/AR venture funding totals 1.8 billion dollars in 2016, 58% increase over 2015.

I mean there are so many big companies, from Google, Apple, Sony, NVidia, Acer, Facebook, Samsung, HTC, and the list goes on and on, that are all investing in VR/AR at the moment. Saying that VR will not take up until Microsoft gets involved is quite nonsensical, to be honest. Surely a big a player like Microsoft finally joining the party (albeit later than most other big partners) is a good thing for VR. The more support for VR the better. I mean, you can barely find a smartphone nowadays that doesn't support VR, which is the main driving force of VR at the moment. Yet we know Microsoft doesn't have a smartphone presence.

Even Spencer himself said that Microsoft would have a wait and see approach when it comes to VR... http://www.gamasutra.com/vi...

So here are my questions to you. When was the last time Microsoft was successful at making anything take off? Windows mobile? Xbox?
What metrics are you using to back up that statement?

Or, did you simply mean that that VR won't PERSONALLY take off for YOU until Microsoft gets involved? because that would be totally understandable.

On Topic, This is good news for VR and a good price point for anyone wanting to get into VR on the PC. Hopefully, this will lead to a less bashing of VR on this site and others like it.

@SolokingxRobert

I am well of aware of what Acer is offering with these headsets, which is partly why I'm debating his claim that "VR doesn't take off until Microsoft gets involved."

I've been researching and investing in HMDs since late 2011. I paid some $900 for the Sony HMZ-T1 model, waited in line to try the Oculus DK1, and went to two VR conferences trying to get a taste for these headsets, also the current owner of the PSVR. The community and money involved behind-the-scenes in VR is huge, and investors are popping up left and right and so are start-ups. Think real-estate, medical, data-tracking, gaming, entertainment, education, etc... The idea that VR wouldn't take off until Microsoft gets involved is simply not true, and I just wanted to hear his insights on why thinks otherwise.

Unspoken2959d ago (Edited 2959d ago )

When have they been successful? I'll give you a link as it would take too long to type here.

https://goo.gl/images/RPqUU...

There are only a handful of companies supporting VR hardware and Microsoft played it extremely smart by waiting to see how the landscape turned out after first gen headsets were received by the consumer.

Try to downplay the news we've had for months where 2nd Gen headsets supported by MS OEM partners are going to bring VR to the masses at an affordable price.

So no he doesn't have to get over himself at all.

DigitalRaptor2958d ago (Edited 2958d ago )

Oh dear...

Christocolus, you do realise that the internal tracking technology has rather huge restrictions and that you have to actually be LOOKING at the controllers for the tracking to work. Now tell me how that isn't a major downside, and why you would always have to think about where your hands are to ensure that tracking remains accurate? So instead of being immersed in whatever software has been programmed for you, you're constantly thinking "oh crap, are my hands in my line of vision?". If you move your hand too far left or right out of the line of sight of the headset, tracking will drop. This directly affects gameplay potential. This is a bad thing, and will most likely hinder progress for games made on that platform.

But now all you're going to see is people thinking "wow I don't have to have a separate tracking source like a camera", and less people actually questioning what the implications of not having that available to you is.

Next up, is that whilst these displays are some of the higher resolution on "reality" headsets, they aren't OLED which is the standard that matters most on VR display tech. They are LCD, and that is not a good sign, especially considering the price of the bundle. The $399 price is questionable and also the Acer brand which isn't known for quality.

To say you're being naive about what this means, is an understatement.

christocolus2957d ago

@Digital

Naive? Lol. what has that got to do with my comment?

DigitalRaptor2957d ago (Edited 2957d ago )

.......

You're asking why your comment is naive, and I actually told you exactly why that was in great depth in my reply. Jesus christ man. Oh, and thanks for classing my comments as "BS" when in fact they come from a place of wisdom and I'm still waiting for a legitimate response from you here.

christocolus2957d ago

@Digital

At this point, I don't even have to go beyond the first 4 words of your posts to realize it's more unnecessary talk. Stop wasting your time dude. I don't care.

kinect didnt take off, illumiroom didnt take off, hololens aint taking off (in gaming at least), and I dont think if they go VR it will take off either. The only thing they need to take off is their greedy smug unwarranted cocky smirk off their faces and stop all this BS they've been doing by taking notes from other companies (idc who either it could be taking notes from Uncle Ben rice boxes, idc at this point, do somethin...)

gangsta_red2959d ago

"The only thing they need to take off is their greedy smug unwarranted cocky smirk off their faces..."

And there it is folks, the answer to MS's problems. I myself always wondered why everyone at MS had a smug, unwarranted, cocky, smirk on their face and kept up with the BS.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who noticed that...but might I add that their faces also had a sarcastic, foolish, bombastic, psychopathic, ugly sort of mongoloid around the brow type of look to it also?

OC_MurphysLaw2959d ago

illumiroom was never a product hot shot...just an R&D project. As for the rest of your post...it will get filed in the appropriate bin.

TheUndertaker852959d ago

HoloLens hasn't even saw a consumer level release either. DevKits are the only things available. 🙄

2cents2959d ago

All of these devices provided platforms to develop individual aspects of the deployment of Mixed reality.

Depth scanning, spatial scanning, skeletal scanning, voice recognition, visual projections, holographic manipulation...

Many of these devices were proof of concept and were justifiably needed to be able to get where they are. This is exciting stuff for normal tech heads, most of you jaded die hard fans really spoil it for yourselves and everyone else. You have no idea how much passion and real world sacrifice has gone into these industry developments. Just take it all for granted.

2959d ago
subtenko2959d ago

@Dlacy13g stop being a dagon fanboy. Don Matrik was the epitome of my post.. Illumiroom was being hyped up by all the xbox fans, stop ignoring the fact... Guess you dont want microsoft to improve because that was the point of my post dum dum.... You dont like any bit of criticism so you want to cover your ears. Thats not how things progress you bafoon.

@TheUndertaker85 No duh, but if youve keep up with Hololens like I have you now its not taking off "(in gaming at least)," I even said it in my original post....READ next time ...

@ImGumbyDammit EVERY COMPANY should take notes from their competitors and non competitors, you are a fool if you think otherwise. You might as well have version 1 of every single product. You wouldnt support a console successor if you really didnt think companies shouldn't take notes. WTF....

This might be the reason Xbox has been laging behind, because these dumb fans think they shouldnt improve in any way possible... N4G ignorant xbox fans be like "Naaww are you kidding? Xbox shouldnt take notes from the success of others, they shouldnt learn from their mistakes!"

Xbox is in trouble if they are listening to people like you all. I'll let actions speak louder than words (as they always have like this console gen) And these actions clearly are speaking because Im witnessing this gen so there is no fooling anyone

TheUndertaker852958d ago (Edited 2958d ago )

It wouldn't be "taking off" without a consumer level release. Ya know. So the device is moved to consumers who buy the product? The consumers who'd also be buying the HoloLens content.

Nice try eliminating context.

Or should developers be sitting around and messing with what is available rather than you know. Creating the content.

Ok? So vr won't take off till a company whos already losing to PlayStation makes a vr unit to compete with psvr which has already been out for half a year? Uhh why?? Name one of the technologies involved with vr that Microsoft are ahead of Sony htc or oculus? Vr is taking off with or with out them. They are not pioneering anything related to vr.. they are just saying us too.. and that's fine.

2959d ago
Kingcorey132958d ago

I see what you mean with windows. The controllers are going to need a camera. Does anyone know how good internal tracking is? And mixed reality is not new. They all have patients.

DigitalRaptor2958d ago (Edited 2958d ago )

Internal tracking is not going to be good enough.

The controllers MUST be directly in your line of sight for it to work. You can imagine the restrictions and gameplay hindrances involved in making VR games on that platform.

Cy2958d ago

It doesn't have to be Microsoft, but yeah, it was always going to be the hardware that came out a few years after the first wave of VR that started to make the technology better and more affordable. VR still has a long way to go to be anything other than a cool, if expensive, piece of new tech, but if you're hoping it doesn't flop like it always has in the past, the fact that major companies are still investing in bettering the technology is a good sign.

Now if only people would start making more real games instead of tech demos and "experiences".

Exactly. I can't wait to see what they have planned for E3.

candystop2959d ago

I've been wanting vr and mentioning it long before even oculus. Heck I've even applauded Sony for stepping into VR. Now that MS is on board it can become the norm across the board. Not sure where you're getting this flopping from. Seems like the Sony guys like to create drama or bunch together a few that dislike with the rest. Well for your info, there are many Sony fans that could careless about VR as well as MS gamers. You sound sour and not sure why. Smh

cartoonx12959d ago (Edited 2959d ago )

@kryptic, they are similar to u guys, when ps4 was powerful, resolution was the only thing that matter to you guys now with scorpio resolution doesnt even matter. very similar indeed.

BigWan782959d ago

@kryptic...

vr still on life support... everyone low key praying that microsoft brings some life to it...
who wouldn't want one of the worlds biggest software/tech companies adding to the vr space..

andrewsquall2959d ago

@BigWan78 You're joking right? Scalebound VR anyone?

ninja Gaiden being released 8 days apart is insane MS hasn't learned anything with shoulder to shoulder releases. October 29 for Outer Worlds and October 21 for Ninja Gaiden. These games now range from 60 to 80$. Yalls audience might GP it but other platforms have to buy it and your average person won't shell out that kinda money a week apart.

franwex1d 16h ago

Aren’t those games made for different audiences though?

Lightning771d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

Yes but what if you want both?

Not everyone can buy both.

franwex12h ago

If you want both, then buy both. What difference does it make if you buy one now, and the other one later? Just get the one you really want first. I know $80 is expensive, but it’s not THAT expensive. If you’re skipping paying the gas bill due to trying to buy a game maybe don’t buy either one yet and wait a few months when they’re cheaper? They won’t eat into each other’s audience. Even Microsoft knows.

Reaper22_1d 15h ago

Well, you dont have to buy it. Noone is making gamers buy it a week apart. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Lightning771d 8h ago

You want another Doom The Dark Ages scenario? I'm surprised Oblivion and Expedition 33 did well with a simultaneous release. Clearly that fatigue was definitely felt with Doom.

They need at least 2 weeks apart.

coolbeans1d 10h ago

You're talking about a first-person RPG and a third-person action game though. So, it's a bit different than EA putting Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1 back-to-back.

Petebloodyonion20h ago

Last I checked, Ninja Gaiden was published by Koei Tecmo and not MS.

Nope, 'displeased' ain't the feeling I had when reading that article.

But speaking of pleasure:

Are you personally pleased with that line-up Xbox have in store for you in the Series' fifth year?

Edit: I didn't downvote you.

goken18h ago

To be fair “sigh” could also mean relief, happiness… although it is also often interpreted as some form of negative expression

Lightning771d 4h ago

Still making excuses. What's the issue with this?

1Victor20h ago

@light:” What's the issue with this?”

The issue is your thickness a reasonable player would buy one of the two game that are close to each other release and at minimum get it to halfway/finish it and then buy the other at a later time🤦🏿.
