Remedy continues a successful year with two new games - bringing Northlight engine to PS4

Alan Wake and Quantum Break developer Remedy Entertainment is adding PlayStation 4 support to its Northlight Engine, the developer announced.

The company is working on a new game project code-named P7, which it aims to release on “a wider range of platforms,” which is it is bringing Northlight to Sony’s console.

The Northlight Engine is the same in-house engine that powered Quantum Break.

PS4 ? Interesting. Quantum Break was really fun, but had so much unfulfilled potential.

UltraNova3000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

Wow thats big news...hopefully their new game wont have tv 'influences'.

uptownsoul3000d ago

Can't wait to see what this CodeName P7 is all about. More games is always better!!!

Nitrowolf23000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

Make Alan Wake 2 Happen!!

i believe Remedy owns the IP

freshslicepizza3000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

i say this is good news for remedy, now watch as brand warriors try and highlight how this is bad for microsoft.

i finally got to play quantum break and its ok, not awful and not great. i kind of liked the whole tv influence thing, didn't bother me and you could easily fast forward or skip it if it bothered you. i imagine it was much cheaper than using ghr game engine to render all of that.

what remedy really needs to do is make combat more fun because its worse than uncharted games are for bullet sponge enemies. alan wake and this also look so dumb when running. plus the graphics are pretty good but again its like a smear of vasoline creating this weird overlay. plus adding these little things that you interact with dont make the gameplay more compelling. the formula is going from point a to point b is very basic and quite boring.

UltraNova3000d ago

Moldy its obvious that a significant part of the dev's time and budget went to the tv stuff, thats why QB ended up a mediocre game. If that 'pressure' isnt there next time I m sure they will make a better game.

darthv723000d ago

well... considering that both the ps4 and xb1 have very similar architectures (more alike than any other systems in the past) then it's pretty obvious that their engine would work on the PS4 since it works on the xb1.

Why would this info surprise anyone?

Good news for Remedy
now work on making a fun game with good story
you did that once in MaxPayne 1-2

Concertoine3000d ago

Alan wake had a great story

BlackTar1873000d ago

just lol'ing at you did that once then listed 2 games :)

i love remedy i can't wait to see their next game regardless of where it's released at.

starchild2999d ago

Quantum Break had a story that I enjoyed a lot. Alan Wake did as well.

EpicZinger3000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

In a world, where every other day, we are listening how these 'niche' JRPGs like Persona, Nioh and Nier that supposedly nobody cares about, all selling comfortably over 1 million units in few weeks, it's funny we have yet to hear from M$ about QB selling over 1 million units. Game was released in Feb 2016 btw. 😂😂

zaherdab3000d ago

I dunno why it had so much input lag for me ... i couldn't get into it

Ju2999d ago

I wouldn't say lag, but controls are a bit "sluggish", I have played better "time control" games.

I think the step is logical. I could imagine games like QB would appeal to Playstation players quite a bit.

zaherdab2999d ago

I dunno i just felt the aiming is off and there was a bit of noticeable input lag in my case, the premise was interesting. i have a lot on my plate on playstation but slow-mo shooters have been far and few between this gen

DrumBeat3000d ago

Qauntum Break had so much unfulfilled potential, but it wasn't very fun.

moegooner883000d ago

combat was compelling, for me at least.

ShadowKnight2999d ago

Remedy going multiplatform. Microsoft should have acquired them a long time ago. Oh well

jdoss7202999d ago

PS4 with Northlight engine, the more the merrier. I thought Quantum Break was hella fun graphics were awesome game was just too short. Needed about 5 more hours gameplay and maybe no tv episodes. I'm all about that Alan Wake 2 though. Bring it on please Remedy.

Hoping for a new Max Payne but with the same feel and atmosphere as the first two.

AcidDvl3000d ago

Not very likely. Rockstar owns the IP and they do a good job internally.

UltraNova3000d ago

Didnt enjoy the last MP game that much...

AcidDvl3000d ago

I liked it. The best in the series. It lost in the Noir feel, but gain with an well crafted narrative and fun gameplay.

morganfell3000d ago

I enjoyed it but they needed to stop taking away my weapons after every cutscene.

UltraNova3000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

Acid, its the fact that they departed from that Noir aesthetic in favor of the buzz, is the very thing that made me go meh...other than that it was a good game.

AcidDvl3000d ago

@UltraNova

Of course, you have every right to dislike that. I don't disagree with you, I just appreciate the effort they've put in to that game, seeing that they're not Remedy, nor did they try to be. That's Rockstar DNA running on MP3, and that's preferable than trying to copy Remedy's DNA.

I personally didn't mind the Noir loss, as the game traded it for those multiple camera angles in the screen (24h style), distorted images and text on screen quoting the dialog and other different narrative structures. That combined with the well crafted dialog and a lot of one liners. Max is very quotable on MP3.

In the gameplay department, it's one of the best 3rd Person Shooters of all time. Mechanically is flawless.

'The way I see it there's two types of people, those who spend their lives trying to build a future and those who spend their lives trying to rebuild the past.' - Max Payne (MP3)

Max Payne 3 was a great addition to the series, especially if you're a fan of Tony Scott's Man on Fire. But the loading times were abysmal on last-gen consoles at the time.

njulo3000d ago

They realized that the Ps4 Nation(Gamers) are supportive in new IP.

GTgamer3000d ago

Gonna be like the ps2 era where 95% of games were on PlayStation and they all strived I can feel it.

The 10th Rider3000d ago

The irony of this comment is that most PS4 gamers here have been bashing Quantum Break, which is Remedy's newest IP.

EpicZinger3000d ago

How many millions out of 55 million ps4 owners have you seen bashing QB? I'd love to hear your statistics. 😂😂

yeahright23000d ago

most ps4 gamers? or a few fanboys?

Razzer3000d ago

Let's not pretend the game was universally praised everywhere else.

The 10th Rider3000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

@EpicZinger,

I dunno about statistics, I'm merely pointing out that just because the game is on a console that's not PS4, there's people that will bash it. So to paint the "Ps4 Nation" as welcoming new IPs is a bit ironic.

@Razzer,

The game has a 77 on Metacritic. That's around The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush 2, RIGS, Until Dawn, Teraway Unfolded, Little Big Planet 3, Infamous Second Son, Driveclub, and Killzone Shadowfall. While not "praised", over 90% of reviews are positive. That means that over 90% of reviewers enjoyed the game. Although it wasn't universally praised, it was near-universally liked by reviewers.

Really anything above a 60, while it often disappointing compared to the amount of hype, isn't a terrible game. The fact that you're trying to put it down merely supports what I said about PS4 owners attacking the game simply because it's on a different console. And yes, everyone does that. Xbox fans do that to PS4 games and Nintendo games, Nintendo fans do that to PS4 games and Xbox games. It's unfortunate, but people see a game that's below an 85 as a flop if it's not on their console of choice.

Razzer3000d ago

The game got mixed reviews. That is all I'm saying. Some loved it. Some thought it was ok. Others hated it.

You looking far too hard at fanboy reactions and generalizing just as much as that "PS nation" label.

The 10th Rider3000d ago (Edited 3000d ago )

@Razzer,

But the game didn't get mixed reviews . . .

Mixed reviews would be if there were a lot of really high scores and a lot of really low scores, with scores in general being allover the place. Most of the game's scores are around a 70-80. The further out you get from there the fewer reviews there are. Here's roughly what the score breakdown looks like:

Seven below 6 out of 10
Nine from 60-69 out of 100
Seven above 90 out of 100
Thirty-five at 81-90 out of 100
Forty-eight from 70-80 out of 100

The reviews are NOT mixed. The only reason people say they were is because that's the picture those who attack the game try to paint. In reality it's a game that got an overwhelmingly positive, although somewhat lukewarm, reception.

EDIT: @Kribwalker,

Lol, the comment section of that article is the perfect example.

rainslacker3000d ago

QB was average. That's why they have been bashing it, typically in response to Xbox fan boys acting like it's one of the best action adventure games ever made which somehow redefined the genre with it's repetitive game mechanics.

The 10th Rider3000d ago

@rainslacker,

You're further prooving my point that people put down the game because it's not on their plastic box of choice. The average score is a 77 and the number of reviews in each range was posted right above you. It's certainly not exceptional, but it's not 'average'.

I don't even own the game or a Xbox One, but the game was reviewed fairly well, although a bit of a letdown due to hype. I bet you wouldn't say that The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush 2, RIGS, Until Dawn, Teraway Unfolded, Little Big Planet 3, Infamous Second Son, Driveclub, and Killzone Shadowfall are all average.

starchild2999d ago

@ The 10th Rider

Good comments. I fully agree. I played Quantum Break on PC and totally enjoyed my time with it. I find it strange how if a Sony exclusive has a metacritic average similar to Quantum Break a lot of people on this site treat it as if it is a great game, but if a Microsoft game gets a score like that it's treated as if it's garbage. Its impossible not to notice the double standard here.

I liked Quantum Break and so did the majority of reviewers. It's ok if some people didnt like it, but it's goddamn annoying how they act like it's some kind of fact that the game is garbage. That behavior is driven by pure fanboyism.

Ju2999d ago

I am playing it right now. I don't think it is the end it all action games. I have issues with the game mechanics and it pushes the XBO quite a bit maybe too much. Not liking the low res; especially in motion. When the camera isn't moving it's OK.

It has it's moments. I generally like it. I think one of my favorites on the XBO. Could be better, though.

The 10th Rider2999d ago (Edited 2999d ago )

@starchild,

And the funny thing is that even after presented with the facts (the game's scores) people STILL falsely claim it got 'mixed' or 'average' reviews while denying any attempt by PS4 fanboys to discredit the game.

As I said, fanboys for every console do it to games on other consoles . . . But it's sad people still deny it after presented with clear evidence contrary to their claims.

If people were to actually read the reviews they would see that it's fundamentally a good game with a few flaws dragging it down. I for one would love to see them continue to evolve on some of the ideas implemented in the game. It'd certainly be better than seeing the same regurgitated AAA stuff that releases every year.

It Shouldn't Take Expedition 33's Success to Remind Square Enix That Turn-Based Still Sells

TNS: Expedition 33 was the wake-up call Square Enix needed, telling it turn-based RPGs are still popular, but that shouldn't have been the case.

True, but if it does get it through their thick skulls, then that works.

Although, the Dragon Quest 1 + 2 HD remakes will be turn-based and (the worst kept secret) Final Fantasy IX remake should be turn-based I would imagine. Let's see if any newer games go turn-based too.

thorstein2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

DQIII HD Remake was turned based and very successful. Then there was a really obscure turn based game came Balder's Gate 3. I heard it might have done well.

Profchaos1d 23h ago

I wouldn't be shocked if they switched ff to the vii remake combat system

PapaBop1d 19h ago

It won't get through to them though, despite E33's success, they still won't risk going fully turn based for their big budget projects simply because they are still in the mindset that it needs to be action combat to appeal to the mainstream audience. I hope I'm wrong but don't underestimate just how stubborn Japanese execs can be

barom1d 12h ago

Ya'll are hyping up Expedition 33 too much. Reminder that FF XVI sold 3 million in a week and it took Expedition 33 approximately a month to get to that (33 days to reach 3.3 million).

While it is true that Sqaure Enix has moved away from turn based games compared to how they were in the past, there is a good reason for it.

Older gamers will know this but during the ps2 era, we were flooded with turned based games from Japanese studios and this created a form of fatigue back then going into the next generation.

When Square released FF13, they received heavy criticism for making the game turned based like every other FF game and not doing enough to innovate. This is why they made FF15, FF7 Remake and FF16 have real time combat. It gave the series a fresh spin and has brought in new fans to the series.

I personally would be happy with either turned based FF or the real-time combat version we see today.

Shane Kim2d ago

Remake and Rebirth have "turn based" if you set it in the settings.

Lexreborn22d ago

Dang wish I saw your post before I made mine because we definitely feel the same way lol

Profchaos1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

Yeah hit the nail on the head but its like ww2 games we get hundreds of them then a decade of nothing and people start missing them i think we're going to start seeing them return

Claire, dragon quest even yakuza have seen turn based return

Runechaz1d 7h ago

Every Pokémon game is also a Turn Base RPG.. and selling millions

andy852d ago

Only need to look at their own game DQ 11 approaching 10 million to show there's a market. And that's not as big of a name as FF

Runechaz1d 6h ago

you can also look at the Pokemon game number

Tacoboto2d ago

Another article about Expedition 33 and Square Enix and turn-based games? This is starting to sound like propaganda.

The game didn't sell because it's a turn-based game; it sold and is enjoyed because it's a really freaking good game that released completed at a good price without gamer drama attached to it. No Mtx, no wait-until-it's-patched, minimal bloat, a self-contained story, no multiplatform BS. Just a solid original game that absolutely nails what it intended to do.

Redemption-642d ago

I was just about to say the same thing.

anast2d ago

This comment should have a 100 upvotes, at least.

CrimsonWing692d ago

Maybe try actually listening to the fans who have supported the series for decades. This habit of ignoring your core audience just to chase people who were never interested in Final Fantasy in the first place makes no sense. And when that approach fails, doubling down on it is beyond baffling.

The battle system has never been the main reason non-FF or non-JRPG players stayed away. Gutting the series’ identity to chase a broader market doesn’t attract new players. It just alienates the loyal ones.

Keep going down this road and we’ll end up with Final Fantasy Fortnite abomination or a F2P Battle Royale game.. Oh wait…

My personal opinion:

Manufacturers and publishers have indeed inflated the industry.

From $700 million development costs for games like Call of Duty, to digital (store) prices for games and DLCs, online multiplayer fees on consoles (why can you play Helldivers 2 online for free on PC but not consoles?) or still preventing sell/lend digitally purchased games.

Sometime in the future, this bubble will collapse.

They should know better, but they just can't help themselves and suck even the last penny out of our wallets.

BeHunted4d ago

Because Sony knows people will be forced to pay those prices for single player and multiplayer games, not everyone prefers PC gaming. Sony also has a monopoly on PlayStation digital games. In 2019, they stopped allowing retailers and game key sellers to sell PlayStation digital games, making them available only through the official PlayStation Store

anast4d ago

The Dutch gov. wants a piece of the pie.

Eonjay4d ago

They should be suing the individual publishers increasing the prices to $80 instead of suing the store. There are plenty of publishers still selling game for like $50 with much success (like E33). But this proves that the publishers are the ones setting the prices.... so again nothing changes because they aren't even going after the main offender. How is suing Sony going to make Microsoft not charge $80 for the next COD? Sony being the number one store in the market doesn't mean that publisher have to charge us an arm and a leg. Again the industry is laughing at us because consumers never get real representation. Just these fake platitudes that are meaningless.

BeHunted4d ago

"How is suing Sony going to make Microsoft not charge $80 for the next COD"

Because Microsoft doesn't have a monopoly, I can purchase Call of Duty at a huge discount from CDKeys or other gaming retailers. The only way to purchase digital PlayStation games is through the PlayStation Store.

djl34854d ago

Weird, I swore GoW, Stellar Blade, Horizon Zero Dawn, TLoU, etc. were on the steam store....uh.....

BeHunted3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

@djI3485

I'm talking about PlayStation games that you can only purchase on PlayStation. I can purchase Steam and Epic games from 3rd party retailers and key stores.

Killer2020UK4d ago

About time. There is zero fair reason why digitally distributed products that you cannot recoup any value when you want to dispose of them, should be priced higher than that of physical copies that entail all of the costs and the benefits of owning.
