Failure. It should do more than 700k first week because its a halo game. I cant wait to see all the fanat-X on the merry go-round

Thatguy-3102579d ago

No worries it sold a million digital that's what many xbox users buy /s lol

bouzebbal2579d ago

So not even play anywhere helped !

Critic4l_Strik32579d ago

butt hurt because it's true?

2579d ago
TankCrossing2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

Not butthurt in the least. I think I made a pretty fair observation.

The first comment on the article is someone saying "I cant wait to see all the fanat-X on the merry go-round" with seemingly geniune enthusiasm, which is pathetic isn't it?

Aloren2579d ago

@bouzeball There's no way "play anywhere" could help with retail sales since it only works with digital versions. If anything, play anywhere hurt retail sales more than it did with any other game, cause if there's one genre of game that makes a lot more sense to play on pc than on xbox one, it's RTS games.

This game was niche, it was never meant to sell.

PlayableGamez-2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

Why you are getting disagree is beyond me.
Niche title it is.
Strategy games on consoles are niche.
Halo Wars 2 was a fan service not meant to appeal to the masses.

CrimzonRazor2579d ago

dumb comment after development cost and time there is no way its not meant to sell. If it wasnt meant to sell they would not make it.

thejigisup2579d ago

All games are meant to sell, even the f2p ones...duhh

ShadowKnight2579d ago

Godzilla sold more than this

Deathdeliverer2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

@gangsta_red
I agree with you one hundred percent. Halo wars is niche as hell. The developers knew out the gate that it wasn't a blockbuster title. Expectations low, and hopes high. This sequel is a little different because the budget clearly went up after the great sales of the original. They clearly wanted more sales but even still, it's niche.
However me saying more Xbox gamers should support niche Japanese titles because it would make others willing to try selling their niche titles on the console as well. They just need to know the interest is there and strong enough. You and others started raising hell. Its contradictory as hell.
Every game is expected to sale, but the sale expectations are not always for a million sales, or even half a million in some cases. That's why games are budgeted appropriately during planning. Sometimes a "Blair Witch Project" happens. Low budget but ended up with a crap load more attention than expected. But it's an exception, not the rule.

The first one sold almost 3 million copies. What's your definition of niche? 300,000 week 1 for Forza is niche to then? This game got outsold by week 1 sales of Farming simulator! As usual if something for Xbox fails its niche, not a commercial failure. Way to make excuses. If this was a PS4 game they would call it a failure. The same people that suggested 2.6 million copies for Horizon after 2 weeks was a failure to those same people.

Stogz2579d ago

Lol anytime MS needs defending, there's gangsta red!

S2Killinit2579d ago

This was not a niche game in fact it had one of the largest ad campaigns for a MS game.

Darkfist_Flames2579d ago

niche? LOL, not according the xbox fanboys, its an AAA game.

Why o why2579d ago

1, I dont trust vg chartz or their numbers

2, I agree, this is niche especially for xbox gamers despite the halo name

Nobody should expect this game to do large numbers... its good for the diversity which is a positive.

Liqu1d2579d ago

@PlayableGamez He's getting disagrees because when PS fans say that games like Gravity Rush are niche they're apparently just making excuses. He's right about it being niche, but to claim it was never meant to sell is ridiculous.

Godmars2902579d ago

@PlayableGamez:

Because of the same old tired reflex of MS announcing a new game, and the Xbox fan camp proclaiming that it will sell millions.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2579d ago

"Niche" is an excuse some use to dismiss the success of some Japanese games, while simultaneously using the word "niche" to explain why some other game wasn't successful. Why is that?

Knushwood Butt2579d ago

Never meant to sell??

Classic. Remind me to use that in conversation.

2579d ago
Kribwalker2579d ago

In physical copies alone (not including digital, which is where I bought it) it sold better then another niche title, gravity rush 2, did with twice the install base in its first week

XanderZane2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

It is a niche title, but people will say since it's a Halo's games it automatically should sell 8 million copies. The first game didn't even sell that much. The main reason the first game sold well was because Ensemble Studios (Age of Empire) was developing it and they have a big following. Also, Halo Wars 2 wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. I'll probably still check it out once the price drops some. It's not a $60 game.

@CrimzonRazor
It was definitely meant to sell, but not sell 7-8 million copies like a Halo fps game. If it sold 2 million copies, that would be a huge success for that game.

@ShadowKnight
Godzilla sold on the name alone. lmao!! I feel bad for all those fanboys who got stuck with that crappy game. Halo Wars 2 is actually better then Godzilla. Shoot, No Man's Sky is even better. lol!!

Worse exclusive flop ever.
http://www.metacritic.com/g...

@S2Killinit, HarryPuttar
Niche game on game consoles. Every RTS game is a niche game on a game console, because it really doesn't belong there. Most gamers don't buy RTS on game consoles. On a PC, it wouldn't be niche.

Dragonscale2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

@gangsta, that describes most xbone games lol. Excuses excuses.

@whyowhy, so true. VG usually inflate the figures regarding xbox. Its probably sold worse tbh.

2579d ago
yeahokwhatever2578d ago (Edited 2578d ago )

If there's 1 thing the xbox brand has proven, is that MS has no problem just burning money indefinitely for no real reason at all. Im amazed they havent moved on by now.

Just because the game says Halo on cover doesnt mean its gonna sell 1 million! Its a niche genre "RTS", one thats better played on PC with k&m.

Can you tell me what Halo 5 sold compared to the RTS in its first week? Oh ok....better than 149k thats for sure!

Ricegum2579d ago

Barely more. Microsoft exclusives generally don't sell very well, that has been the case this entire gen. This game should have sold a whole lot more and you know it, huge failure these numbers and it's borderline embarrassing.

Vandamme212579d ago

When do we get Halo 5 ODLC and Halo Wars 2 ODLC?

FallenAngel19842579d ago

You honestly expect an RTS to do that well on a console just because it's part of a big brand?

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2579d ago

How well did the Command & Conquer series sell on PS2?

I think you just don't understand that RTS have had good sales numbers on consoles, but EA chooses to focus mainly on sports games and annual franchises.

FallenAngel19842578d ago

C&C sure as hell didn't sell over 700k in their first week on PS2

I don't think you understand. Go and compare how well the majority of RTS games sell on consoles and then get back to me

Lime1232576d ago

Well, first one sold over 2 million....

FallenAngel19842576d ago

And the first one didn't sell over 700K in its first week so what's your point

DialgaMarine2579d ago

Halo Wars 1 did fine on 360. It sold over 2.6 million copies, so the niche title argument is irrelevant. To me it sounds more Xbox fans are trying to avoid something that MS themselves are terrified of with the fate of the Xbox brand; Halo is dying. They still put a lot of emphasis on it, but it's not even close to the powerhouse franchise that it used to. Neither is Gears for that matter.

boomtube19872579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

@GtR35olution A Halo game that is NOT a shooter. Why the hell would it sell in a shooter & sports game machine. Thats a stupid question. Its like saying indies and japanese games are what PlayStation is all about

EpicZinger2579d ago

Point is, halo wars 2 is a massive failure. Period. Now wipe those tears

2579d ago
Erik73572579d ago

Microsoft needs to treat halo better than this.

I hope halo 6 can re capture the magic PLEASEEEE lol

Darkfist_Flames2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

@Erik7357 LOL just go back and start praising nintendo games since you dont have anything to praise on xbox, and since Review scores matter now LOL.

S2Killinit2579d ago

Is that the world or just the U.S. Numbers.

S2Killinit2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

That is suprising considering the advertising campaign for it and the fact that its a Halo game. Also i believe the previous one sold a relatively good amount.

I dont want to stoop as low as some people, but I have to say this just to those people, when gravity rush sold the same amount in a single territory, some people were calling it a flop and laughing at the numbers.

Unspoken2579d ago

Well, if you take into the consideration the PS4 install base, than yeah it was a failure. Just saying.

PhoenixUp2579d ago

Do you also expect every Mario, Pokémon, and The Legend of Zelda spinoff, no matter the genre, to sell over 700k in its first week as well?

PhoenixUp2578d ago

Then you're freaking out of your mind. The likes of Captain Toad, Pokken Tournament, & LoZ: Triforce Heroes didn't come close to selling that much in their first weeks

endi1232579d ago

Who is so stupid and naive besides ms to think that this game is going to sell well, no mater what they invested its still a halo wars game basically a strategy game with halo written on it that's it, if that was halo 6 then I would understand the problem and all the laughter from PS fanboys.

Liqu1d2579d ago

It's not a shooter though, Halo Wars is nowhere near as big as the main games.

Mystogan2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

Well we don't know the digital numbers yet. It was marketed heavily as a Xbox Play anywhere title, and XPA games are only for digital. I bet digital numbers are at least 2 or 3x these numbers.

butchertroll2579d ago

What a failure sales wise. First Halo Wars sold over 600k in February NPD 2009

Kurdishcurse2579d ago

You reek of desperate bashing.

Tech52578d ago (Edited 2578d ago )

"Failure. It should do more than 700k first week because its a halo game. I cant wait to see all the fanat-X on the merry go-round"

It's an RTS though. like the first game, the Halo community is big on the franchise being an FPS. there's a community for it but the amount of played hrs for Halo is through being an FPS.

The first Halo Wars sold 146K in its first week and it was only released in Japan and Europe during that week. How Halo Wars 2 sold so close to that despite releasing in North America in its first week is pitiful.

Hell Nier: Automata sold more in its first week in Japan alone than Halo Wars 2 did worldwide.

2579d ago Replies(5)
Chevalier2579d ago

Convenient goalpost moving. It wasn't a failure, it was a 'niche' game. Seriously the previous game moved almost 3 million units so how is it 'niche'. If that is niche then I guess Assassins Creed which does about 3-4 million on each single platform is 'niche', along with Forza, Dead Rising. It got beat by Farming simulator week 1 sales.

babadivad2579d ago

Those are low numbers indeed. Fan base seems to be dedicated though. I've never struggled to find a match.

bouzebbal2579d ago

xbox brand became obsolete under spencer. this is pure fact

FallenAngel19842579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

@ Chevalier

How is it convenient goalpost moving when comparing how a sequel sold compared to the original? 😑

Halo Wars 2 far underperformed compared to its predecessor, that's a fact. Halo Wars 1 released at the same time on its console's lifecycle and it still managed to sell better in the first week without even being released in North America at the time. When Halo Wars 1 did release in North America it sold 370K within its first week in the region, which is more than twice than what Halo Wars 2 sold worldwide in its first week.

Halo Wars 2 had lower first week sales than all those games you listed, so idk why you even brought them up. It's extremely unlikely at this point that HW2 will ever sell close to the 2.64 million that HW1 ultimately sold.

And there's no excuse for why Halo Wars 2 has lower first week sales worldwide than Nier: Automata, which only released in Japan where PS4 had a install base lower than 5 million at the time.

LiViNgLeGaCY2578d ago

Erm, I think that's exactly his point. You basically just agreed with him. Read his comment again.

FallenAngel19842578d ago

No I didn't agree with him. In fact he's goalpost moving himself. First he says it's a niche title. Then he tries to argue with himself that it isn't a niche title.

See this what happens when you kill the popularity of the main characters of the Series and I'm talking about Master Chief and Cortana.

You can thank 343 industries for that.

bolimekurac2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

it has nothing to do with that at all, people just dont like these type of games at least not the ones expecting a aaa title, it wouldnt of mattered if it was mass affect wars. its a niche game

masterfox2579d ago

lol justifying ? is cool you can keep trying,

Is indeed a not for everyone game, but still the popularity of Halo in the 360 was very high and thanks to that Halo Wars sold pretty damn good cause of the Halo popularity

http://www.vgchartz.com/wee...

Like it or not Halo on the xbone was/is garbage in comparison to the old iterations.

bolimekurac2579d ago

im not saying it did well or making excuses masterfox, it should of sold more with a large install base the xbox one has but the same can be said for the ps4 and its 55 million install base or 60mill and some games that should sell well simply dont. im simply saying halo wars is a niche game, i love halo, i wont touch halo wars and many others arent into it either.

Chevalier2579d ago

Halo Wars 1 did close to 3 million sales. If you think that is niche then these games are also niche based on single platform sales:

Dead Rising
Assassins Creed
Forza
Fable
Resident Evil

All these games sold about the same as Halo Wars 1 did.

LexHazard792579d ago

Or when you release a game in a genre no one really plays on consoles.

Halo 5 did well for MS. So the main games still got some life in em.

masterfox2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

" when you release a game in a genre no one really plays on consoles."
here you go:

http://www.vgchartz.com/wee...

bolimekurac2579d ago

masterfox your showing the 360 sales, the reason it even sold that many was because it was the first halo spin off game and the hype was much bigger for halo at that point in time, the game looked good but still was niche and it sold well a niche game but that doesnt change the fact its niche and chances are wouldnt do that well in a second or even third game no matter how pretty the game might be. you simply have hatred for ms but hey its your life

2578d ago
gangsta_red2579d ago

Not bad for a niche game. Considering it was never meant to sell.

tyasia02579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

Hmm, that's funny considering that Microsoft had a big Halo Wars 2 Launch Party that Phil, Major Nelson and other Xbox celebrities showed up for.

And I certainly don't remember any XBoners saying anything about how it wasn't supposed to sell when they were talking about how good it was going to be before release.

So yea... totally not expected to sell.

maniacmayhem2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

So because there was a party for the game doesn't make an RTS game niche in a console market? Yea, that makes total sense.

How many popular RTS games are there that do Uncharted or GTA numbers for consoles?

LexHazard792579d ago

@maniac, hes pretending not to have seen any gamers questioning how much the game was going to sell. When all I saw on the forums was how it was a RTS and it was gonna flop.

PlayableGamez-2579d ago

They do that for evey game.
They did the same thing with Ori and the Blind Forest. (Great game)

FallenAngel19842579d ago

You were expecting it to sell even lower?

_-EDMIX-_2579d ago

? so what you're telling me is I was always meant to be a failure? What's the point of this company anymore?

With a intellectual property as huge as Halo I'm not really sure the amount of units this game sold is something to be desired.

CrimzonRazor2579d ago

I dont believe anyone spends the time and money to make a game and not want it to sell, kinda a dumb thing to say.

Outside_ofthe_Box2579d ago

Not sure if you're being sarcastic to make 'you know what point', but you are correct that it is niche so low sales were expected.

But if these vgvhartz numbers are true, looking at the sales of it's predecessor this is a significant drop off, even taking it's niche status into account, if we are making an honest observation and not trying to push fanboy agenda.

dkp232579d ago

people can't be this dumb right? spend millions in development for the purpose of not selling.

_-EDMIX-_2579d ago (Edited 2579d ago )

??? You know what that is? That's strange because when the Last Guardian released I'm pretty positive you're making it sound as if it should have been selling 5 million units out of the gate.

😂😂😂&# 128514;

Didn't the first Halo Wars sell something like 3 million units?

Oh it's "niche" now lol

http://www.vgchartz.com/gam...

You know what's even funnier? This released on 2 platforms, the first Halo Wars only released on one.

I think Crackdown would fit in a more turn-based tactics system via Xcom then a RTS type game play. Being able to customize multiple agents, deploying that group in an crime infested urban zone, going against other super powered enemy and fodder type thugs. The potential for that is huge if they won't do another successful, ground breaking, GOTY open world outing like Crackdown 3....

I could see that. I feel like State of Decay could spin-off into something strategic as well.
