Mass Effect: Andromeda Review - IGN

Mass Effect: Andromeda is an expansive action role-playing game with a few great moments that recapture the high points of the landmark trilogy that came before it, and energetic combat and fantastic sound effects create a potent sci-fi atmosphere. But without consistently strong writing or a breakout star in its cast to carry it through the long hours and empty spaces, disappointments like a lack of new races, no companion customization, and major performance problems and bugs take their toll.

Flop effect heading for andromeda

skydragoonityx2967d ago

7.7 isn't bad, but considering its a mass effect game, hyped for a long time, yes it is indeed flop of the year

-Foxtrot2967d ago

Not bad...but bad for a high up respected "triple A" franchise like this

Gaming_Cousin2967d ago

This game is the decline of Mass Effect

Some people are determined to be excited about it. No matter what they are still dancing around.

Several people are saying the reviews are mixed. That isn't really the case. The number above 7.xx are actually quite few and those that cross that barrier are unevenly written affairs. No one giving this game 9's effectively supports their case.

princejb1342967d ago

I consider anything under a 8.5 a average game. That's because in my experience those games under 8.5 I get bored of quickly

ChronoJoe2967d ago

Bad when it's launching alongside Horizon, Breath of the Wild, Nier Automata and Yakuza Zero. There are far better RPGs / Action RPGs to be playing than Mass Effect right now. EA are giving people little reason to invest in this experience over others, when the quality of so many elements of the game is so low.

I guess it's a decent Spring option if you're playing on XBOX ONE or PC. Since all of those games listed are either PS4 or Switch exclusive. However I don't think ME Andromeda is a game that will be remembered positively in years to come.

Brugal2967d ago

You took the words right out of my mouth.

bouzebbal2967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

flop of the year because someone you never met gave it 7.7?
you peole are so desperate.
i am neither defending nor criticizing the game but to claim what you just did shows how ridiculous and sad the world is.

super_bruno2967d ago

Damn... :/ Oh well, Horizon here I come.

JackStraw2967d ago

Why do people still take game reviewers seriously? When they review a game poorly that you like, you find a reason to try to discredit them. When they review a game you don't want to like, it's completely unbiased and justified. I can name at least 5 games that have come out in the past decade that scored poorly but were phenomenal games, and I'm sure any other reasonable gamer can do the same.

Ashlen2967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

So my opnion having played 10 hours. (minor spoilers)

First off the mood of the people which has been an issue of contention for some people didn't bother me. And I feel like those people miss the point. The Andromeda mission wasn't supposed to be a military operation. Most of the people were sold on the idea as colonization. It's reasonable to assume the people they picked would be optimistic and easy going people and not authoritarian military types. And as for the main characters mood ( I picked the female lead and have no experience with the male leads performance) a lot of that depends on what dialog choices you make. So it's not fair to criticize your character for being optimistic if that's what you pick to say.

As far as game-play goes, the first mission was great it was structured in a semi open setting with some verticality it's really great and it feels like Mass Effect. Then you go to the hub and meet what I would assume will be your main quest givers it's not bad it's basically the Citadel 2.0 except with less interesting characters though more will probably appear through out the story

But then you go to the first planet and it's DA:I a big flat boring zone where you do what seems to be repetitive tasks that it seems safe to assume will just be duplicated on each of the different worlds. And thus far those seem pretty boring. Do a task fight a couple baddies rinse repeat. On top of that the world is a desert which makes it that much less interesting to look at.

All in all it feels rushed and made on the cheap in typical EA fashion. Again I have only played a small part of the game, so this is just a review of the first ten hours.

From what I have seen a 6.5 to a 7.5 seems accurate. It's not the worst game ever but it's probably the worst Mass Effect game.

Godmars2902967d ago

@Foxtrot:
Given how obvious it was that Bioware cut several corners, under-delivered if not outright copped out, with ME3, never understood how they're so respected.

DarXyde2967d ago

We're three months into 2017 and, according to reviews, has a pretty average score. You would do well to understand the difference between a "flop" and a disappointment. It's Mass Effect on the PS4 and Xbox One. It'll sell anyway, I'm sure.

I didn't like the past games, but this one doesn't seem terrible in the grand picture. Just....underwhelming for fans with high expectations. There's no need to be so pessimistic and dismissive

lelo2play2967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

Dam, reviews are all over the place. A lot of good scores... and a lot of bad scores.
Not a good sign!

badz1492967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

Now fps drops and lack of variety are points to deduct from games, ha, IGN? Whatever happen to fps drops not affecting enjoyment and gameplay like you guys said in your review of the secretly multiplayer game Zelda BoTW?

Dario_DC2967d ago

Don't call them out on their bullshit, Nintendo fans are gonna kick you in the nuts xD

Flewid6382967d ago

Sometimes frame rate drops affect a game. Other times it doesn't.
This is one of those times where it does.

#TheMoreYouKnow

badz1492967d ago

and this part is hypocritical as well

"Andromeda just can’t stop itself from retreading some major plot ideas from the original trilogy, including another long-dead civilization that’s left advanced technology lying around."

and another Zelda with the same storyline is a masterpiece! go figure

CaptainObvious8782967d ago

Shhhhh.... You'll destroy their fragile narrative and they'll get angry again.

2967d ago
Vegamyster2967d ago

Two different reviewers and games. Mass Effect focuses on story, Botw focuses on adventure, they're not comparable.

Veneno2967d ago

Lololololol this isn't even a Zelda article and yet you still bring your butthurt for everyone too see?!?!?!?!?!

kreate2967d ago

I wouldn't blame ign on the comparison between zelda and Andromeda. the industry was being cute by calling zelda a masterpiece.

with Andromeda, the industry was being honest on the let down from all the hype that was built leading up to the release. and to send a msg to Bioware that they will be held accountable to a higher standard than Nintendo games.

badz1492967d ago

@Veneno

The review itself mentioned a slight comparison to BoTW and Witcher 3. So, what's your point?

Cheezeman30002967d ago

I mean, it's obvious they like one game more than the other. I usually find reviewers are able to forgive things like framerates when they enjoy the game as a whole. But they don't enjoy Andromeda enough to forgive the technical issues.

Not saying it's the right way to do things, but reviews are subjective.

DarXyde2966d ago

Um...The Last Guardian and Shadow of the Colossus? Any Souls game?

I can appreciate calling them on it, but let's not be ignorant to many other games that got a "pass". Could be that frame drops matter more for these games.

Gazondaily2967d ago

Raaa....Gassed effect.

Didnt think this would get such mixed reviews.

andrewsquall2967d ago

Lol it wasn't obvious from the awfully received VGA 2016 trailer???

girevik2967d ago

BUT! You can sex with aliens!... ;)

I feel once they started pushing the sex stuff more than other items that was a red flag to me that it might lack substance.

yeahokwhatever2967d ago

I think they should just make it a space sex sim. like surgeon simulator. I mean, why not really go for it, right?

Calither2967d ago

More stimulation, less simulation

girevik2967d ago

@yeah

Totally! They can call it Mass Erect! Bwahaha!

aaronaton2967d ago

i know.. i thought it would get 5's across the board.

Shame on Bioware for doing this

frostypants2967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

EA. Shame on EA. Bioware is just an EA pawn now. Most of the people behind their good games have been gone a long time.

annoyedgamer2967d ago

Its EA, the Bioware you knew is gone. This is a common theme with all of EA studios. Bioware will be closing up shop within a few years.

2967d ago
PhoenixUp2967d ago

Ass Effect incoming. Bioware really Dragon Age 2'd this game up

PapaBop2967d ago

"Ass Effect" I hope that term sticks, this week gunna be good!

Eterna1Ice2967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

I haven't played Andromeda, nor am i planning to, but it seems like Dragon Age 2 wasn't even that bad.

StormLegend2967d ago

Yeah it's best to support better games like Nier Automata or Horizon or even zelda.

1908-PB2967d ago

zielocz3k---true this i can a agree with.

_-EDMIX-_2967d ago

Own all 3.

Still buying Mass Effect lol

thekhurg2967d ago

Own them all too. Not throwing away money on a broken experience though. Awful animations, poor characters, bad writing and a bland story. Yep just what immersive RPGs need to survive.

GTgamer2967d ago

If we reward them for making a mess then their just gonna stay on this path.

_-EDMIX-_2967d ago

@thek-it's throwing money away to you because you don't wish to play the game I actually on the other hand do.

I can't comment on the story or the writing of a game I've yet to complete I actually never even cared for the writing of the original three games I really only cared for the individual Stories of each character.

the overall main plot line of each Mass Effect game I actually personally never cared for.

Play what you like , buy what you like, stop trying to harass and demonize Gamers for making up their own mind.

This is clearly a 7 or an 8 game but trust me this would not be the first time I purchased a game that was a 7 or an 8 or even below.

I like enough about the series to make an informed purchase later down the line.

It's a broken experience to you bud, I've played games with similar issues.

No one's actually demonizing the people that are choosing to not purchase this so why are you choosing to harass those that do?

Lol throw your money at whatever you feel like it , it's your choice buddy it's your money stop worrying about other people. 😂😂😂

notachance2967d ago

own all 3, preordered Persona 5 Take Your Heart edition, sorry ME:A I've got money but there's just no time for a flop game.

girevik2967d ago

I'll gamefly it and if I like it then I'll buy it but seeing the mixed reception doesn't give me the confidence to purchase just yet.

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast105d ago (Edited 105d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul104d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow104d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake104d ago (Edited 104d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

ZeekQuattro104d ago

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Mass Effect Companion Tier Ranking

One of the best things about the Mas Effect series is the companions you meet along the way. So here is a tier list of all the companions from Mass Effect!

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast146d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine146d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast146d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman146d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

thorstein181d ago

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics181d ago (Edited 181d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac180d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992181d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX181d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9181d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne181d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast181d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne181d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog181d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay181d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000181d ago (Edited 181d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon181d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT181d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon181d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139181d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein181d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
