Mass Effect Andromeda pre-review impressions after the first few hours - Fenix Bazaar

Mass Effect: Andromeda will finally grace consoles and PC next week, and Fenix Bazaar has been lucky enough to have spent the good part of the past few days blasting through Bioware's overwhelming, intimidating sci-fi space opera epic.

I haven't actually seen it myself but the UI seems to be a negative no matter who is previewing the game.

pros:

combat has drastically improved

story seems interesting especially the growth of ryder as a character. i don't know how you can judge this with 2.5 hours of gameplay/story

There’s a distinctive difference in relationship building(i like this because in ME2 there was either like or dslike and there should be some middle ground)

cons:

need to fix auto saving and check points
the UI is a mess
leveling up is quick and easy(i guess early level will be quick while later ones taking longer)
auto cover needs work
scanning stuff still sucks

the unknown:

Dialogue options are a little more … grounded(i actually like this)

The character models do look a little out of place...nothing gamebreaking but noticeable. Watched a video and the character movement seems way better and the jump pack definitely adds to environments since you can essentially climb things now. Looking forward to it no matter what. Need me some space drama!

JeffGUNZ3018d ago

Yeah man, too many people on this site are making the character models/animations out to be a poor NES port. Sure, they could be better, but tell me which Mass Effect had great character models/animations? Some article on this site people are ripping it apart saying the game is trash solely on an animation which isn't really that terrible. With this site, I think the problem could be they hate ME from ME3 ending issues and the game isn't a Sony exclusive.

@ JeffGUNZ

I will tell you this. I just started playing it and it is at its core still Mass Effect. The first zone "Habitat 7" is pretty massive for a starting area with plenty of optional quests that naturally come in to play. The character models take some getting used to but after the initial shock that it is different the expressions and way characters interact is actually good. Controlling the character is definitely better than previous games and the jet pack makes fights way more intense especially on the highest difficulty setting. So far I am really enjoying it and I absolutely loved the original trilogy. I'm actually on the fence with cancelling my physical pre order and buying it through EA Access just so I can keep playing over the weekend after my 10 hours are up haha.

To sum it up in my opinion: if you are a Mass Effect fan you will jump right back in no matter what has been changed.

"Overwhelming"?

Overstated maybe.

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast151d ago (Edited 151d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul151d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow151d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake151d ago (Edited 151d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast193d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine193d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast193d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman193d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast192d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

it's like bitch but your shirt back on, your not blue or spikey get away from me

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

thorstein228d ago

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics228d ago (Edited 228d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac227d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992228d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX228d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9228d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne228d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast227d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne227d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog227d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay228d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000228d ago (Edited 228d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon227d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT227d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon227d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139228d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein227d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
