I think E3 is still important because of how many people watch. It's great exposure. I do prefer Directs though, because it's just you and Nintendo. It eliminates all the fluff from typical E3 shows. It's short, sweet, and to the point.

Every conference/trade show whether it's at a conference hall or all online, has one purpose, to excite and sell a product. Even PSX is like, and while Sony keeps the heavy hitters for E3, PSX is for indies, and smaller companies to help sell their products and rewarding the gamer (excitement about ps brand)

They seemed to stop doing E3 once a year as why wait an entire year to reveal a few games each year big companies like Nintendo can do their own thing as and when they want to in the day and age we're in we don't need to wait for E3 each year so that games magazines can go out and cover it for us and then we find out a few days weeks later it's now Livestreamed! Nintendo can do this on their own. Use E3 for just getting people hands on with the games but can reveal them in their own time throughout the year at key points like they did with Switch in January giving people a bit of time to save up we all knew it was due march time anyway they'll have another around launch time no doubt before and after E3 after summer and before holiday period. E3 is great but it's right as summer is kicking off. Time for going outside ;) games stop coming out... not completely of course but yeah Nintendo can't wait a whole year each they got too much going on need to let people know what's coming and when.

Nintendo directs are cool. It's a focused approach at presenting your product.

But it doesn't prove E3 is no longer needed. Sony proved that E3 done right can be the most amazing spectacle ever. Sean Layden laid low but the games soared high.

It was focused, without all the dry talk and all from the beat of a drum(orchestra). It was delivered so powerfully that I've watched it more than any E3 presented since they started the expo. Then, watched YouTube reactions from places like Easy Allies, giant bomb, kinda funny games, etc. Then individual reactions on YouTube. That was a powerful presentation. And that's the first time I ever did that.

Nintendo could do E3 and deliver a powerful and fun message. And having them there promotes a unified gaming industry instead of separate conferences and directs.

What you're seeing with the Nintendo directs are what I call "Apple presentations."Apple gets on a stage all by themselves and it comes across as self important. Not part of the cell phone industry. It's effective. But you can see Apple keeps the rest of the industry at arms length. In turn, Apple comes across as arrogant. I'd rather not see Nintendo become like that.

i honestly don't see the difference between Nintendo having their own presentation at E3 or doing the direct thing. they're not sharing the stage at E3 with anyone, they're still focused on their own product(s), etc... in both instances.

Take a school oral essay. All the other students come to class and present to the teacher and other students what they have to say. But one student tells the teacher and other students to watch their oral essay that's scheduled for another day on the internet.

That student is not sick or injured. Creating self importance when all the other students came to class.

Nintendo has that choice. It's their business. But it doesn't change how it looks. Why have CES, Tokyo game show, Gamescom, Car shows. Let's cancel them all so that everyone does theirs individually.

You would find that things would become a disorganized mess of presentations. And then later, wonder why there wasn't a place or format that everyone could come together to present then all at the same time.

Because a lot of these events are for gamers mainly so people can get on the show floor. They are being offered an experience not just the conferences and while yes off guys back at home don't get to experience that stuff it's still great step adoption. There's a reason why many people enjoy the game shows because they have the option to go and when they do it's great

It's kind of the same like live concerts why bother going when you can listen to their track online or watch a live stream, it's because people want the experience they want to be able to meet their favorite developers play their favorite games on the spot and try out new product

But the Switch reveal looked exactly like E3 though. Switch interest is high after Nintendo stood on a stage for the first time in years for fans and the gaming press. Third party interest grew after that professional presentation. So if I were them I would do a stage presentation every year along with what they do at E3 and the Directs. It organizes everything.

I see this flew over everyone's head because they are too stuck on stupid, or fanboy agendas. You as the regular gamer not in the press you only get to experience E3 at home. Your not there with your hands on the device or games why do you put so much emphasis on this event? Gamers everywhere think that E3 is the only place or event or way to announce games or consoles. But it's not and no matter what you watch stream, video etc your still at home and you still haven't experienced it for yourself you are subjected to someone else's opinion of what they had hands on of.

Nintendo has proven with the Switch this method is not needed and it doesn't benefit the regular gamer at home. (I purposely didn't speak on directs as that wasnt the point) They started before this but we will start in October at the teaser trailer of what the NX was and now would be called Switch. Didn't have to be at E3 to garner attention. Next they went on Jimmy Falon, and then we fast forward to the January event. They had several places they held the event not just in Japan. In conjunction with this event they had tree house presentation of the games and also at the NY store they let the PUBLIC come play and try out the Switch. Then at the end of January they had a jam packed booth @Pax South that is also OPEN to the PUBLIC. They will also have a tour where you can go to check it out around the country. This is several months of info and available play time for You the Regular Gamer that is not press to check out unreleased system and games.

As gamers why would you be in objection to this? If Sony and Microsoft did this as well you are trying to say you wouldn't be happy about it? For the guy that said there are more companies then just those 3 you are right and a lot of them have pulled out of showing games at E3 and opted for the public approach one company being EA. Y'all put so much emphasis on an event that you watch at home and don't attend. I actually attended several E3's so I get hands on time and I would much rather get hands on then sit at home watching trailers and other people play. But I forgot this is the twitch era of gamers where gamers watch other people play games instead of playing themselves.

E3 is an important stage for showing information on new games. The date and occasion more than the stage used itself.
A live on-stage show isn't needed, since 99% of all gamers are going to be watching the show online instead of attending in person anyways and stage shows are hella expensive no matter which company you are, but showing up on the show floor with demos and stuff is, and Nintendo's been there every time.

Directs and E3 can co-exist just fine, and we can get lots of information and excitement either way.
Plus, need we be reminded of how badly a live stage show can sometimes go due to unexpected errors?
