A Case for Videogame Companions
FGE – So I just recently finished The Last Guardian and it got me thinking, not because its good, because I don’t believe that it is particularly good, it made me think about what makes a good AI companion in a game. Across my ten-hour playtime with The Last Guardian I continually came back to the same line of thinking. I was convinced of the fact that Team Ico had made what is essentially the most realistically behaved animal in any game, in spite of the fact this animal is a terrifying bird/cat/dog thing, but I also genuinely don’t believe this matters. Games have to be games first and foremost, it is a matter of form and function that makes a great game and this is where The Last Guardian fails.
