Horizon: Zero Dawn’s Map Revealed, Is Pretty Massive In Size

The map of the game seems really huge.

gameseveryday3045d ago

Well, that does not tell anything about how big the map is in relation to the player. The map in the game is huge though. No doubt about that.

-Foxtrot3045d ago

I don't believe we don't get that map and the other little trinkets in the actual collectors edition ¬¬

NukaCola3038d ago

The map sort of has the same shape as the Skyrim map. From what we see in the draw distance and how detailed each location is and diverse, I think it's going to be pretty huge, but not so big it's empty. Plus you got to see that there are lots of temples, dungeon and indoor places too. There is quite a bit here. I think this is going to be a solid 40-80 hours experience.

zivtheawesome3045d ago (Edited 3045d ago )

a guy on reddit have used the gameplay videos to calculate the map size:
"There are many game play videos available now. I believe they can be used to calculate the following:
1. Aloy's speed on foot and mount. Many videos show Aloy running or galloping toward a waypoint with the HUD showing a decreasing distance measure. My rough estimate is that Alloy runs at 4.5M per second and with a mount travels at 10-12M per second.
2. Many videos show a floating waypoint icon on the HUD (with a distance measurement) and then go directly to the map (where we see Aloy's position relative to the waypoint). Say the HUD indicates that the waypoint is 100M's away, when you view the map you know that the distance between the current location icon and the waypoint icon is 100M. You can then use this information to measure the size of the map.
My Findings. My rough rough rough, didn't count pixels (for distance) or frames (for travel speed), back of the envelope estimate is that the world is ~5000 meters wide and that it would take ~18.5 minutes to travel from the eastern shore to the western shore (at the widest point) if FLYING at the speed Aloy runs. Factoring in elevation changes and navigating terrain obstacles, it would take much much longer to travel that distance by foot. This seems big to me, but I've never played the Witcher 3, and I have no expectation that this new IP would match that size."

tl;dr the west end of the map is 5km away from the east end on flying distance.

KwietStorm_BLM3044d ago

Not exactly an exact science, is it?

Darkfist_Flames3044d ago

wait, Final Fantasy XV is bigger than Xenoblade Chronicles X ?

3044d ago
Segata3044d ago

No way dude. The FFXV thing was based on the world map MODEL. Actual in game and it's MUCH smaller than XCX. What is actually playable is pretty small.

Segata3044d ago

Darkfist_Flame

No. That is based on the physical model of the entire world. FFXV only has 2 main playable areas with 2 much smaller areas and I mean small. The game isn't very large at all. What is playable is a great deal smaller than XCX but a massive margin.

Hype is fading away for me for this game. Its just confirming what I thought about Guerrilla. The game is looking less and less special from what were shown except for its lore and enemies.
What really separates this game from your Far Cry 3, Ass Creed or Shadow of Mordor except robots?

BIGBOSS083044d ago (Edited 3044d ago )

What exactly do you want from a game? What is it that would make it special? Maybe your expectations are Un realistic. This looks like one of the best games to come out of this generation.

sullynathan3044d ago

I want something different, don't you think they can do more with this setting than to have a generic story and the same far cry 3/ass creed style gameplay that nearly everyone in the past 5 years has been influenced by?

Overload3044d ago Show
sullynathan3044d ago (Edited 3044d ago )

@Overload Kojima is a hack. A horrible writer that has been pointed out by his own editor, a dunce when it comes to game design that he has to copy superior games and fail and a career narcissist. So what, are you going to refute my claim or what? That's right.

Those games aren't rpgs either.

andrewsquall3044d ago

Must be right up my alley then. Far Cry and Assassin's Creed are LITERALLY the only Ubisoft Games I have bought this gen. Never touched Watchdogs or its sequel or the meh Rainbow Six or The Division and most certainly won't be buying Ghost Recon Badlands or For Honor even since their debuts at E3.

I didn't have unrealistic hype that "diminished" for any of those games, I NEVER had it to begin with from their first showings. For Honor just looks like another boring attackathon like Ryse and no impressive visual tech to boost it at all.

Again, not sure why you though Horizon looks great and now doesn't, you either should be hyped for a game or were never interested to begin with.

Wait Kojima is a hack? Okay moving on, everything I said about your ideas makes perfect sense now. Butthurt over Death Standings exclusive status too are we?

UnHoly_One3044d ago

Nobody in the world is "butthurt" over Death Stranding being exclusive.

It's nothing but 2 trailers at this point, nothing is known about it, and since it is coming from Kojima, I personally am confident it will just be weird and terrible like the rest of his games.

Now can we go back to talking about the actual game in this article, or do you want to argue with me, too, because I don't like a developer that has nothing to do with the topic at hand?

DigitalRaptor3042d ago (Edited 3042d ago )

@ Overload

Even though your comment was marked as "inappropriate", I have to thank you for telling me everything I needed to know about this person. LMAO!
----

@ UnHoly_One

"Nobody in the world is "butthurt" over Death Stranding being exclusive."
- Well that is 100% false, and you clearly haven't been visiting the same parts of the internet I have. Lots of people on other platforms who don't seem to think PS4 is worth buying want it, and other people on this website are trying to use old, outdated information to try and prove that it's also coming to PC.

"It's nothing but 2 trailers at this point, nothing is known about it"
- Plenty is known, but since you're disinterested because it's Kojima, you have failed to pick up on the analyses that dive into the clues hidden into those trailers and everything that has been hinted by Kojima over many months - as well as stuff about it that has already leaked.

" I personally am confident it will just be weird and terrible like the rest of his games."
- Since your first 2 assertions are completely false, you don't have the luxury to be confident about anything in regards to Kojima and his games, especially when they're not terrible - the reviews, awards, influence and industry recognition easily back this up.

"Now can we go back to talking about the actual game in this article, or do you want to argue with me, too, because I don't like a developer that has nothing to do with the topic at hand?"
- Your arguments were destroyed. We can do that now if you like.

You could draw that comparison to most open world games. Or any games. What made Uncharted 4 different from 1/2/3?

What makes it different is that, well, it is different. New environment, new narrative and so on. Sure they all have trees, rocks, the lead has arms and legs (I'm being petty). But the experience is new.

I'm not downplaying your opinion, just as valid as mine but maybe you're just burnt out with the formula I don't know. But I'd say there is as much to differentiate Horizon from the pack as there are any other open world title.

No reason to decide either way anyhoo, games out soon so just wait and see if it grabs you then or not. No biggy.

sullynathan3044d ago

yes and that's why most open world games are generic and aren't worth playing. Some thing like the rope, larger environments, more interactive scripted parts and stealth made UC4 different from its predecessors but that's mostly my uninformed opinion from watching UC4 and not playing it.

One open world game I played recently that was mostly generic but did something new and very different was Shadow of mordor. The game is obviously heavily influenced by Arkham and Ass Creed games but it had its nemesis system that I was locked in and spent hours on, until the stupid game deleted my save file and forced me to do it again.

Same reason I am worried about Mass Effect andromeda because while Andromeda hasn't shown us all these things, its pretty much told us it will have all the same crap that a generic open world game will have.

sullynathan3044d ago (Edited 3044d ago )

@Barrcade_BE I am not a troll, I have had this name sullynathan before I came on N4G. If you find someone with the name of sullynathan on any other site, that's most likely me. The claim that I am troll and I'm downplaying anything by Sony is only said by you users on N4G because I am not boasting and overhyping Horizon.

Am I still a troll against Sony because I said I fear that Mass Effect Andromeda will have these same problems?

Am I still a troll against Sony since I have been speaking positively about Uncharted, The Last of us and NiOh? Excuse me for not singing praise for any and everything Sony related on N4G but you children will have to live with it. Everything that comes from them isn't good and won't be good.

Dark_Knightmare23044d ago

Dude it gets so tiring seeing you troll Sony in almost every Sony related article. Go do something more productive nobody buys your opinions or care to see what you have to say so just give it up and go do something else

Takwin3044d ago

EVERY site has loved it. It looks to take things from many games in the action RPG sphere and improve upon them, which is what games do. I personally love action-adventure-RPG games with solid stories and a super fun gameplay loop. The graphics are stunning in this game at 1080p and 4k, from what everyone has said.

sullynathan3044d ago

how does it improve upon them?

Darkfist_Flames3044d ago (Edited 3044d ago )

Go buy Gravity Rush 2,whats that its too unique for you?

akurtz3044d ago

too much gravity for his taste

Controversial gamer opinion incoming... I don't get the hype over Zelda!

I see the new Zelda and I think, Okay so it's Zelda in a new art style, one that we've seen before. It's doing things like Monster Hunter, it's doing things like Far Cry 3 and other open worlds... and people are losing their minds over it. I look at Horizon and i see a lot of similarities, not exactly of course. But both games are taking things from other game and putting them all into one game. The big difference, Zelda is in one of them. On a side note, i think both games look like they're gonna be good.

@Sullynathan are you hyped for the new Zelda? If you are why hyped over that and not Horizon? If no, then what games are you hyped over?

IamTylerDurden13044d ago

Would u say the same about Witcher? Witcher 3 isn't revolutionary but what it does, it does very well. Not many games are revolutionary, hardly any are, but it doesn't mean they can't be great.

ColonelHugh3044d ago

Very good point. Witcher 3 is a great game, but not terribly original. There's nothing wrong with games like that. The first 4 gens had platformers copy/pasting all over the place, and yet some legendary titles just collect the formulas together.

Even Ocarina of Time didn't invent any of it's staples, not even Z-targeting, but it is remembered for how cohesive and well-made it is.

NotanotherReboot3044d ago

Agreed. the more I see of this game, the more skeptical i become

UCForce3044d ago (Edited 3044d ago )

Then you are becoming emo. Already told you, don't go too far with negative or else. Here the thing, you keep asking me to add you, but that not gonna happen because your attitude and reputation are all time low. You maybe right sometimes, but mostly you don't get it.

UCForce3044d ago

Optimism and skepticism are must be balanced, but you don't know how to use it.

NotanotherReboot3044d ago

Twoforce, i'll be playing Nioh in 5 days time on my new pro. Add me bro

Also if I'm skeptical about horizon and its a bad game, then im not disapointed.
If im skeptical and turns out to be a good as Nioh, then ill be happy.
Thats how i live my life Twofroce, you need to accept this and also accept me on PSN

"Kojima is a hack. A horrible writer that has been pointed out by his own editor, a dunce when it comes to game design that he has to copy superior games and fail and a career narcissist. So what, are you going to refute my claim or what? That's right.

Those games aren't rpgs either."

Refute your claim, you say? I'll throw my hat in on this one.

First, Kojima, as an industry figure, is incredibly prominent. Many know him, love his games, and believe he deserves his many accolades. As for his writing skills? Imperfect, yet very enjoyable regardless. He does an exceptional job considering he wanted to stop making Metal Gear several entries ago yet found ways to salvage plots at the expense of plot holes. I assume you judge his ability to write due to his work on Metal Gear. You would do well to remember that the mark of great writing is coherence and crafting a universe where you care about the characters, plot, what's at stake, climax, resolution, and closure. Kojima does quite well at most things mentioned. If you look at the series and the plot per game, it's pretty easy to follow. It only gets confusing when you look at a previous entry and try to understand why things changed for no apparent reason. Otherwise, his writing is quite serviceable and not what one would consider "hack writing". Whoever writes Bayonetta's story is a hack. It's hard to concern yourself with the plot, but the games are great. That's my refutation.

As for those games not being RPG's... at the very least, they contain RPG elements which play a large role in the game such as leveling up, customization, etc. Even Gravity Rush can be considered to contain prominent RPG elements.

Horizon, I argue, is definitely an RPG. Why? Because it's similar to The Witcher, which was created by CDPR, a self-described RPG company. In fact, take a look at awards it received, including RPG of the year. Fair to say, with the similarity in functions, game play elements and whatnot, Horizon is totally an RPG. Likewise, Ni Oh is very similar to the Souls series, which are definitely RPGs.

The point of a game being an RPG comes down to decisions. How strong you are, decisions made in game while interacting with other characters, equipment, etc. Side quests and reaching the conclusion at your own pace are known characteristics of the genre.

The games you mentioned are fairly considered role playing games.

JangoMan3044d ago

All the videos we have seen only shows the game mechanics and how they work. We know less about story and its plots. So you cannot say its all the same.
Farcry with RPG elements of witcher, Its enough to get excited about.

phoenixwing3044d ago

@sully, this game has been described combat wise as monster hunter open world. The combat/gameplay is far and away different from far cry, ass creed and shadow of modor. If you've seen the videos of the gameplay you'd know this. If I'm wrong and you have then why did you compare it to those games when it's obviously not like those games. All you did was pick big name open world games and say it plays the same.

Lynx02073044d ago

Maybe nothing. But I love Far Cry (3,4,primal) and AC (all of them). SoM was ok, except of poor story. So I'm very hyped for Horizon - this is exactly the game I want.

Highlife3044d ago

I think you should stop playing games it seems like you don't like anything

trooper_3044d ago

You never had hype to begin with.

UnHoly_One3044d ago

I've thought from the beginning that it is probably going to be like Far Cry Primal with Robot Dinos.

Which is exactly why I plan to get it. I love all the Far Cry games and most Ubisoft games for that matter.

How when the game is literally inspired by a movie?

Goodguy01149d ago

Lmao, sony making more shows, films, and remasters this generation.

Lightning77149d ago

Yet let's ignore Ghost of Yotei, Intergalactic, wolverine and Santa Monica's New IP.

Yep all TV shows and remasters alright.....

Hereandthere149d ago

Ghost of Yotei looks like a ps 4 pro game at best, intergalactic only showed 4 seconds of in game footage, despite being in development for more than 4 years, wolverine might be good, Santa Monica's New IP was just for you to fill space and cover for sonys lack of 1st party games.

DarXyde148d ago

Remasters aren't games?

Didn't realize the same folks making games are also making films and shows (which Sony actually has been making before games, but ok).

Silly comment aside , Ghost of Tsushima as an anime sounds grand. Don't care too much about Horizon or Helldivers media, but it sounds cool to get more Jin.

You do realize Sony has a completely separate movies and tv series division right? They are simply catching on and actually taking advantage of their popular gaming ips

I was hoping the GoT series would focus on Jinn after the main game.

Im not sure about the show or why it allegedly fell apart, but the story in Horizon is pretty cool. I can see people enjoying it.

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?

No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.
