Microsoft is slashing the cost of its Xbox 360 console, but is now a good time to buy?

This Friday, Microsoft will lower the cost of its Xbox 360 console to £129.99. But there's one reason not to buy, and it's called Jasper.

I agree. I just finally bought a new Arcade 360 with HDMI. I have my old 20gb HDD. I am a proud HDMI player of both the 360 and PS3 =]

Immaculate6121d ago

If someone wants to wait, let them. But I think these people are being a little too petty.

rCrysis6121d ago

waiting may cost you the best fun during Christmas time! Gears 2 on one TV and Resistance 2 on another TV. Pure awesomeness.

Plus all the other games that are coming out during the holiday season.

chaosatom6121d ago (Edited 6121d ago )

articles i have read.

It gives good info.

But I don't want to buy a arcade.

YoshiMeetsU6121d ago

Yup, I know a grip of people buying a 360 now that the price drop has happened. I recommend getting an in-store warranty just in case the worst happens you can take it back to the store and swap it out instead of waiting for a repair.

Anton Chigurh6121d ago

I got mine since 2005 and I'm very happy with my baby

elitewh0re6121d ago

you don't need an instore warranty in england, there's a legal requirement with part of british trade act that means all electonical goods can be replaced/exchanged with proof of purchase. it's strange not many people know about it. i myself only found out about it after my dad told us...

GameOn6121d ago

That's only for a year mind.

King Neptune1176121d ago

of course its the right time to buy one. We got gears 2 coming out, NXE, fable 2, new halo games, and most of all, we got xbox live. It was the right time to buy years ago.

Skizelli6121d ago (Edited 6121d ago )

Petty?

I've gone through two Xbox 360s in the past two years. My first got the dreaded RRoD and my second, brand new and only a year old, now has a faulty DVD drive as of a week ago. My first console was under warranty, but that's not the case with my second, as it has already expired. Forking over $99 + $5 S&H to get it "repaired" won't renew my warranty, so I'm better off buying a new one for $199 just for a new 3-year warranty. If Jasper will solve all these damn issues I've had over the past couple of years, I'm willing to wait for it.

Petty? I don't think so.

Tomdc6120d ago

im pretty impressed by these price cuts! I'm a PS3 fan and i'm not the type to buy two consoles but that price is very competative and I think may result in more sales than PS3 the rest of the year even though the current game line-up for PS3 is better (JUST MY OPINION). Unless of course sony have a price cyt of there own sometime soon =P

Sangria6121d ago

I may buy one soon, the Elite will have a 70€ price cut in Europe, it would be nice with my PS3 and my future 40" screen. I keep waiting, i'm afraid there will be good packs for Christmas, so the question is "Now or Later?".

rCrysis6121d ago

the choice is yours in the end. But remember, there's a huge influx of games this holiday season. But I wouldn't miss out on GeOW2 or R2.

jaysquared6121d ago

I would wait until the bundles come. Last year MS bundled up 2 games with the 360 Forza 2/Marvell Alliance.

UMC6121d ago (Edited 6121d ago )

I've been to my local blockbuster (UK) on tuesday to trade-in my Elite, before the price cut, as it was my third one (two replaced by MS and the 3rd one refurbished) and I wanted to raise some cash to buy a Jasper Xbox, however, I don't know whether to buy a Premium one with the 60GB hard drive or for £70 (about US$ 125) more to buy another Elite. What would guys do?

SabreMan6121d ago

I recently had the red rings with a refurbished 360 i bought from blockbuster which was still under the six month warranty they give you.
So i took it back and they replaced it with a brand new 60gig hdmi 360 for an added cost of £50 on my part, i happily paid the money but when i got home i was very disappointed with the noise the new 60gig 360's make quieter than my refurbished model but still to noisy so now that has been sold.

If i was in your shoe's i would wait for the Jasper models to appear

right....gamers want to watch bluray movies all day. PS3 is trash. i owned a ps and a ps2. sony lost another customer. defend your console all you want but they just don't got it anymore.

damn, look at Nasim go. Stupid little muslim hasn't blown himself up yet.

spelle cheque6121d ago

Judging by your user name and comment I would say you own a 360 yes?

Another fine addition to the 360 family I see.
You're all so funny.

cahill6121d ago

and without RROD

plus gamer can get games running at 1080p native at 60 fps on PS3 too

unlike TRASH BOX 360 which has no games except multiplat and crappy PC games like Mass effect/Gears etc

MART aks SPC

u owned a TRASH BOX

it doesnt matter whether u own one or not

X360 will be third this gen too. PS3 will beat x360 based on just EU sales this gen

oh wait what are u playing this Fall???there is no game on X360 except Gears

BUT

We have R2/M2/LBP/SOCOM/WIPEOUT HD/VALKYRIE/NARUTO this Fall

our EXCLUSIVE existing library is also better than CRAP BOX 360's library

R1/M1/HS/UNCHARTED/MGS4/NGS/F OLKLORE/RATCHET/WARHAWK/MLB SHOW/MINNA GOLF etc

Genesis56121d ago (Edited 6121d ago )

Still to noisy for me.

thanx for PMS

@ Genesis5

maybe you are a bit too sensitive for the V8 Engine sound so, a 4 cylinder car aka gimped system is more than enough for you

Playdead co-founder slammed with lawsuit as bitter row with co-founder escalates

Playdead co-founder Dino Patti is allegedly being sued by his former studio and business partner.
Patti was threatened with a lawsuit earlier this year after he posted a now-deleted LinkedIn post that shared an "unauthorized" picture of co-founder Arnt Jensen and discussed some of Limbo's development. Patti said Jensen demanded a little over $73,000 in "suitable compensation and reimbursement," adding that he had "repeatedly" had such letters over the last nine years.

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

InUrFoxHole3d ago

They had best show 3yrs in a row. Heading for another

VenomUK2d ago

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? Seems ambitious.” To me, I interpret this to mean rather than having a couple of X/S products for launch and a handheld there is a longer term plan to release new products with higher specs at timed intervals. I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

Agent752d ago

But Microsoft forgot the games.

KwietStorm_BLM2d ago

It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever.

Ganif2d ago

Correct.

"Sony's PlayStation 6 reportedly will feature an AMD semi-custom APU with a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU, capable of 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS gaming. The console will include X3D cache and advanced AI upscaling technology."

"It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever."

I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released.

Notellin2d ago

You should have just lead this comment with the fact that you have zero understanding of technology in the consoles and instead have a Toms Hardware online forum level of education.

"I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec."

Very interesting theory. Still not sure how MS would actually make it work.

KwietStorm_BLM2d ago

"I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released."

How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is.

Obscure_Observer1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

"How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is."

Dude, what I know for certain is that a tech as old as X3D chips which is actually *older* than both PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, is hardly the reason behind this new partnership between AMD and MS to build new *custom silicon* for next generation of consoles.

And yes it´s a huge announcement since AMD is working closely with MS to co-develop custom SoC which will allow backwards compatibility across all MS´s next gen devices allowing seamless integration between devices and full backwards compatibility across all generations of Xbox consoles.

I also know is that this announcement don´t have anything to do with Playstation and their strategy with AMD for the PS6, so stop comparing the two pretending that you know what´s going on, because you clearly don´t.

If Sony is working on something remotely similar, that´s remain to be seen.

Fishy Fingers3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

Obscure_Observer3d ago

I guess you missed Sarah Bond´s next generation Xbox announcement this week, were she clearly states:

"I´m thrilled to share that we´ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including, *our* next generation *Xbox consoles*."

But hey, I don´t think you´re entirely wrong, maybe MS will build their own Xbox consoles while licencing other manufactures to build and sell their own Xbox branded consoles. Who knows

Shares vision....we provide chips for money, this deal will sell many chips, we will make lots of money...good vision

Christopher3d ago

The marketing behind this is so heavy that I worry about the actual outcome. Why are they just not showing us the product, why all this talking in market speak?

Lightning773d ago

Probably because the next xbox isn't ready to release yet?

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Who knows.

Eonjay2d ago

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Obscure_Observer2d ago

There´s a lot of people interested on Xbox Next and its ability to run games from major stores like Steam.

We know that the PS6 is just around the corner as well, but so far, no news on what it might improve over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

However, Sony already made public that their priority and actual focus is the PS6. So its not "very early" to talk about next gen when the very console manufactures are talking about it.

The score for the first Plants Vs Zombies is such great, iconic music that it has a timeless quality. Not quite the level of Minecraft, but wonderful in its own right.
