Horizon: Zero Dawn’s Open World Is the Star of the Show - IGN

Horizon's story feels like it may be a little thin, but its world is rammed with post-historic surprises.

GtR35olution3014d ago

Ill be buying this game first day. Game looks amazing

ThatGuyDart3014d ago

Same. Got the Collectors Edition off Amazon. Seems like Horizon is going to be for the PS4 what the first Uncharted game was for the PS3.

Babadook73014d ago

Another PlayStation exclusive - another lowball score from ign. Calling it now.

snoopgg3014d ago

Bet you it gets a better review then scalebound.

3013d ago
candystop3014d ago

Yeah and looks can be deceiving! Hope it turns out great though for you guys!

DashArrivals3014d ago

oh... my... God

I've been avoiding any gameplay videos for so long that a sneaky little short gif is ok, for my Gameplay diet LMAO

I wasn't disappointed. ty

The 10th Rider3014d ago

You do know that a great game series and a separate, great game can exist side by side and both be great, right? Uncharted doesn't cancel out Tomb Raider, Tekken doesn't cancel out Street Fighter, Mario doesn't cancel out Yooka Laylee, Halo doesn't cancel out Killzone, etc... Otherwise we'd be left with only one game worth playing in any genre.

Silly gameAr3014d ago

Nice troll kid. Kick rocks.

Sm30003014d ago

I'm team sony all the way, but this will more than likely take a back seat to zelda, just being honest.
I'm getting both anyway

no_ripley3013d ago

this is the dumbest comment i've read in a while.

you know that the Zelda series is one of the highest ranked game series with millions of fans over the world?

you shouldn't even mention HZD when you talk about Zelda.

poor troll!

How would IGN know if its thin on story if they havent showed much of the story? Personally im glad they haven't since i want to experience it myself.

Muzikguy3014d ago

Probably just preparing for their 7/10 score

badz1493014d ago

LOL we somehow know they are preparing for it

WeAreLegion3013d ago

Kinda Funny played a good bit of it. Greg Miller seems to think it's a good story, so far. I'm more inclined to trust him over these new IGN people.

rainslacker3013d ago

They base the premise on the fact the side quests are more like FarCry, than The Witcher.

Seems a bit premature at this point though, since i doubt their hands on had any part of the actual story presented beyond the mentioned tutorial.

Got the collectors edition fully paid off already!

I can't wait! Horizon: Zero Dawn is going to be absolutely insane

Nu3013d ago

Is it safe to say that Breath of the Wild will be a much more memorable game.

no_ripley3013d ago

Horizon Zero Dawn will soon be forgotten, trust me.

If this game had anything special to it the devs would've shown it.

guyman3013d ago

Ok all knowing and unbiased schn0dd3r (whatever the hell that means) if you say horizon won't be memorable, it won't be memorable - after all, only your opinion and taste matters, no one elses

Genuine-User3014d ago (Edited 3014d ago )

This is the only preview that I have read which has mixed feelings about the story. Gameplay and graphics look incredible though, and I'm sure it'll having a decent-good story once we get to play the entire game.

UCForce3014d ago

Well, I think Aloy is going to be my favorite character especially her voice and personality.

dp2774073014d ago (Edited 3014d ago )

@genuine.
No it was compared to Fallout before, after its first showing or so saying the stories and voice acting seemed stiff but thats been the only complaints I've seen and that could have been from IGN also plus I believe they were only talking about it in a panel so maybe not a fair point from me.

Overload3014d ago

Some of the writing isn't the greatest, but overall it looks outstanding. The story and premise sound cool though.

rainslacker3013d ago

I've only seen one example of the dialogue, and it seemed rather rudimentory. More like some cursory narrative to give purpose to the next task to move on to.

Not exactly shakespeare, and the animation was stiff, although I heard it's gotten better, with that awkward pause that comes from a choice system, but I think the general story we've been given some hints seem to show that it could have something much deeper.

I'm kind of on an information embargo with this game. Haven't looked forward to a game this much for as long as I can remember.

UCForce3014d ago

GG confirmed that there will be photo mode. Here their tweets : https://mobile.twitter.com/...

ClayRules20123014d ago

Photo Mode!!!! My prayers have been answered. This is going to make the experience even that much more enjoyable =)

butchertroll3014d ago

You can change time of day. It's phenomenal :

https://gifyu.com/images/HZ...

starchild3014d ago (Edited 3014d ago )

That's great news. Photo modes are a must. Especially for games with outstanding graphics like Horizon.

Edit @ butchertroll

That's an impressive feature for a photo mode. I love games with dynamic time of day changes. Being able to control that on the fly for photos is a very nice option to have.

joab7773014d ago

It dies feel like they were looking for things wrong with it, but I can't discount the statement, more Far Cry than Witcher. I know the Witcher is something special, but after FC3, I couldn't take the , clear this are over and over gameplay. It's sounds more like Skyrim in the sense that you wander off in a direction and find new things, new areas and creatures.

I'd love an amazing story also, and I am sure it is good, but what matters most, knowing how great the world will be is combat and progression. I don't want it to be easy and I don want some strategy and fore thought, and it sounds like that is exactly what it is. I am happy!

GNCFLYER3013d ago

IGN bro. I always read their stuff on PS for the entertainment value alone.

A PS game could be perfect and they would give it a 10. Then you read the review and are like, what did I just read if it got a 10.

ClayRules20123014d ago (Edited 3014d ago )

Guerrilla Games's has achieved something truly remarkable with this games graphics "in my opinion" The level of detail in the game world of Horizon is something for other developers to aspire to achieve.

Also, the detail placed apon the character model of
is incredible & subtle. I believe it can stand well against other top tier character models, such as Nathan Drake in U4. Aside from the mixed feelings, I'm still so excited for all of us to play this game =)

Lamboomington3014d ago

It looks great, but honestly can't compete with games like Uncharted 4, and that's okay, because it's a more demanding type of game. It's an open world game.

ClayRules20123014d ago

I get what your saying. However, to render the level of detail that GG's has achieved in this game, to such a beautiful & gorgeous level, impresses me even more than lNaughty Dog's incredble U4.
Of course, Uncharted has facial animations that are the best so far this gen "in my opinion" and it's combat is extremely responsive, along with remarkable animations across the board.

100_SavAGe3014d ago

Regardless for my love of Uncharted 4 and naughty dog in general what Guerrilla games have made really stands up to uncharted 4 in terms of graphics it might actually look better for its open scale imo

starchild3014d ago

I need to see it in person on my own screen before I can really judge it accurately.

Kurdishcurse3013d ago

it can and it did, easily i might add. the only reason why uncharted looked good, is because of the linear design and insane amount of motion blur, to hide those pesky framedrops. not to mention you only get to explore an atoms worth of what you see in that overrated game. this on the other hand...

The 10th Rider3014d ago

Guerrilla Games has always been one of the top devs out there graphics wise. It's great to see them trying something out than Killzone and it looks to be working out for them. Great way to kick off the 2017 gaming year.

ClayRules20123014d ago

I agree with you 💯 bud. KZ2 still looks really great today "in my opinion"

Naughty Dog.
Quantic Dream.
Sony Santa Monica.
Guerrilla Games.
Have all lead the charge in visually amazing/incredible looking games, that raise the bar for the gaming industry "in my opinion"

starchild3014d ago

Yeah, Killzone 2 at the time was a really impressive technical tour de force. I'm really glad though that they have created a new IP this generation, which will allow them to more fully spread their wings.

The 10th Rider3014d ago

ClayRules2012,

The list you've got is pretty great! Crytek and Epic Games used to be there, along with ID software. I'd throw DICE on that list for sure. Maybe throw Turn 10, Sucker Punch, and/or Insomniac on there, as well. I wouldn't say they're the top graphics wise, but what the mainline Mario devs manage to pull out of such underpowered consoles is pure wizardry, even if it doesn't stand up against games on the other consoles. Sunshine, Galaxy 1/2, and 3D World were all gorgeous.

If I had to pick a top four right now it'd probably be (in no particular order) Gorilla Games, Dice, Naughty Dog, and Sony Santa Monica. Can't make up my mind on the fifth :P

ClayRules20123013d ago

Thanks, Rider!

Yeah, I'd throw Dice on that list. Their work on Star Wars Battlefront is pretty amazing across the board. Battlefied 1 too. Crytech used to impress me, but now, I feel like they're all talk. Add Quantic Dream to that list, bud =) lol.
Yeah, wizadry at its finest for sure. Props to them.
Nice & respectable top 4. How do you feel about Quantic Dream? I feel HR & Beyond last generation was pretty remarkable, from a visual standpoint. Especially Beyond, which looks better than many "Next Gen" games today. I think Detroit: Become Human looks absolutely amazing, from the little shown, and I expect more footage shown will impress me more, from a graphics standpoint. Character models looked very real & fantastic "in my opinion" But I'm not like OMGOSH from them, yet. Like I was with there games last gen.

no_ripley3013d ago

gameplay/story > graphics

rainslacker3013d ago

I'm really hoping they get more recognition for their skill outside the FPS Killzone fans that up until now are the main group that recognized their talent. KZ is popular among PS fans, but never caught fire outside that fan base, and KZ can't get talked about without it becoming a KZ vs. Halo BS thread.

GG is one of the top devs in the world in terms of graphics. They make solid games, and I hope this branching out allows them to show off the talent they have more in the studio.

rainslacker3013d ago

GG is probably Sony's most talented developers when it comes to visuals. They really don't get as much praise as they should. probably because they made Killzone, which went up against the all heralded Halo. Even ND doesn't match them graphically in every way, and I expect that Horizon will outdo UC4 in this area, because the two studios tend to trade places on which looks better with each release. Maybe not the tiny details that ND is known for, but certainly the actual graphics. SSM also gets their jabs in too. All three studios are part of ICE team, which makes the API's which run Sony's game engines and get put out to 3rd party for development.

ClayRules20123013d ago (Edited 3013d ago )

I honestly see where your coming from, bud. I still believe Naughty Dog are Sony's best & most talented studio, especially when looking at their pedigree last generation. They not only raise the bar for graphics with every new game release, but they add those little details to the things in the world or onto the character model or animation that others wouldn't even think of.

I do believe this generation might be a bit different tho. Sony's other developers aren't playing around haha. I agree, Sony Santa Monica's work on GOW 3 still holds up well today. GOW PS4 by SSM looks bloody incredible. I actually think that game demo looked better than U4. Horizon: Zero Dawn, for being an open world game, is visually more impressive to look at "in my opinion" the level of detail Guerrilla has been able to achieve with the open world & character model of Aloy is something remarkable. Sony's ICE team is pretty awesome.

How do you feel about QD's work in the graphics department? Even tho they aren't owned by Sony.

Kurdishcurse3013d ago

preorders are for the weak willed. maybe you should check the games launch status before buying.

Dark_Knightmare23013d ago

Who the hell are you to tell someone what they should do with their money. Guess what I preorder games I'm interested in all the time and it's not because I'm "weak willed" but because I like getting preorder bonuses, supporting devs I like etc.

_-EDMIX-_3013d ago

I know right, nothing says strong will then a person waiting to play a game based on someone else's opinion ...

/s

I preorder whatever I feel like it , I buy whatever I feel like it.

If anything I would say will might have to do with the freedom to choose to do something of your own volition, I don't know, just a guess.

-Thanos3014d ago

Between Zelda, this, and Digimon World, this year is off to an amazing start for gaming.

starchild3014d ago

This and Nioh will occupy a huge amount of my time the first half of 2017.

DanteVFenris6663013d ago

Gravity rush 2, yakuza 0, tales of Berseria, Zelda, horizon, Nioh, Resident evil 7.

The first quarter of this year has been killer

_-EDMIX-_3013d ago

I really want to watch someone playing that Digimon game as I feel like I'm going to purchase a used sometime next year when I have a little free time during a drought.

It looks really interesting.

I just wish it released 20 years ago lol

Sony Announces Ghost of Tsushima Anime, Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn Movies

Sony is hosting its press conference at the start of CES 2025 in Las Vegas. As usual, PlayStation took the spotlight during the presentation, but not in the way you'd expect.

Grilla115d ago

Yeah but with terminator style bots and the Illuminate. More potential imo.

They better not be afraid of leaning into it hard.

S2Killinit115d ago

How when the game is literally inspired by a movie?

Goodguy01116d ago

Lmao, sony making more shows, films, and remasters this generation.

Lightning77116d ago

Yet let's ignore Ghost of Yotei, Intergalactic, wolverine and Santa Monica's New IP.

Yep all TV shows and remasters alright.....

Hereandthere115d ago

Ghost of Yotei looks like a ps 4 pro game at best, intergalactic only showed 4 seconds of in game footage, despite being in development for more than 4 years, wolverine might be good, Santa Monica's New IP was just for you to fill space and cover for sonys lack of 1st party games.

DarXyde115d ago

Remasters aren't games?

Didn't realize the same folks making games are also making films and shows (which Sony actually has been making before games, but ok).

Silly comment aside , Ghost of Tsushima as an anime sounds grand. Don't care too much about Horizon or Helldivers media, but it sounds cool to get more Jin.

Army_of_Darkness115d ago (Edited 115d ago )

You do realize Sony has a completely separate movies and tv series division right? They are simply catching on and actually taking advantage of their popular gaming ips

Redemption-64115d ago

Naaaaa, you are supposed to pretend they don't have a completely separate movie/TV division

Lightning77115d ago

@Here uh huh Right watch Ghost Of Yotei get the highest score on meta this year. ND doesn't miss so I expect Intergalactic to be a damn near Master piece, insomniac making Wolverine so you know they'll knock it out of the park. Santa Monica will probably announce their new IP this year and it'll be epic. It's about track record and all these studios have great track records. You wanna argue facts go ahead I'll win.

Now that's gonna freakin dope.

-Foxtrot115d ago

I really hope they get the guy who played Jinn to play him in the film.

Elda115d ago

If true then there's hope.

gigoran8115d ago

out of all the titles they could have chosen, those 3 could actually make decent movies.

-Foxtrot115d ago (Edited 115d ago )

They’ve tried a Horizon series and it fell apart, what makes them think a film is going to work with a shorter run time.

I was hoping the GoT series would focus on Jinn after the main game.

S2Killinit115d ago

Im not sure about the show or why it allegedly fell apart, but the story in Horizon is pretty cool. I can see people enjoying it.

Michiel1989113d ago

they probably recorded some footage for it and now want to make a quick buck out of the remnants. You know what they say: fail once, rip your audience off.

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic158d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23158d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1158d ago (Edited 158d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Not worth the money. It isn't like remastered games going from PS3 to PS4, or 360 to Xbox One. Sorry, but those jumps in graphics were extremely noticeable.

If you didn't have the original you can pick that up for 5 or 10 bucks too on marketplace.
