the specs of it essentially makes it a 9th gen console. It may be held back by MS on purpose to avoid splitting the user base... for now at least.

No doubt that if the Pro was given the chance to flex its muscle we would see things not possible on a stock PS4 but sony's parity clause prohibits that from happening so all we get are higher res games and an increase in fps. Nothing more nothing less.

MS might actually go back on their parity clause knowing well that their user base being significantly smaller means less people to piss off by jumping right into dedicated 9th gen scorpio software. I expect them to do that which could force sony's hand in doing the same.

I mean lets face it, the 8th gen hasnt really lived up to the generations past. The whole idea of a mid gen refresh is basically these companies trying to take a mulligan and start over. I say lets stop kidding ourselves with the 8th gen. I fully ready for the 9th to begin and nintendo is kicking things off in March so you know Ms and Sony will have to follow suit.

Well some people will be upset if they are jumping to a new gen already, that's why Microsoft have been saying it's not a new gen.

But what defines a new gen anyway? The PS4 Pro is over twice as powerful than the PS4, and 3 times the Xb1. The rumored specs of the Scorpio put it around 3-3.5 times as powerful as the PS4, but only about 50% more than the PS4 Pro.

If the Scorpio is just faster with no new features then they can reasonably claim it's not a new gen.

Digital Foundry suggests it's not as much as an upgrade as people expected and the other says it's a next gen console. Neither off those sound like a good end to this story.

I think many parts of Scorpio are new gen. Even parts of PS4 Pro are new gen. But a new gen console is not just about the hardware. There's the software and more importantly the intent to be a new generation. And Ms clearly said many time they don't want new generations anymore.
Moreover the timing is not right for the start of a new gen with MEA, RDR2, SWBF2 and the many SW games incoming etc etc all new games are full into this generation. You don't start a new gen just with hardware

You guys are taking this way too literally. They're just saying it's so spec'd up it's like it may as well be a next gen console. It is still an Xbox one and it will play Xbox One games. It will be able to play them with enhanced graphics just like the PS4 pro (but even more so) but what's different than the pro is they upgraded pretty much everything, not just the gpu like in the case of the pro. MS themselves have been very clear that Scorpio is an upgraded xb1.

Read between the lines.

He's saying that Sony didn't make the Pro contemporary to the current technology available while MS, according to him, has. Makes sense though. The reason is that Sony used old tech when they built PS4 and modified it with a small budget just to go fast with old engines.

MS OTOH, custom built almost everything on the XB1 so it could be full DX12 compatible (which was an anchor for the system to run properly), and Vega is the first Full DX12 card since the XB1 launched. The white paper article from the other day even mentions the tile-based rasterizer (only in AMD's XB1 and Vega GPUs) as being one of the main reasons Nvidia outperforms AMD all the time (Nvidia's had them for years). It's because MS built a new generation of machine architecture with the XB1 that they are going to be able to use the newest tech available for Scorpio while still maintaining SW compatibility.

Again, he is saying Scorpio is way more powerful than the Pro. It doesn't matter what you call it though, mid gen or next gen, because it will be the same product either way. MS said at the beginning that it's a marathon and not a sprint. Sony sprinted with both PS4 and Pro's development and it's paid off early, but even Sony admitted the PS4 is nearly tapped out. MS didn't sprint and look at how much more the XB1 does now than when it launched... "impossible" things like BC... and it's still improving every day.

I agree it is a next level system. Just that they are not moving on in the traditional sense. Phil was trying to explain this before re revealed Scorpio. When a company moved to the next gen in the pass, the focus for the new system was separate from that of the old. That means that it would be designed so differently, that the games made for it would mostly not be made for the older version. M$ has decided to this time build a much more powerful system and keep same OS that would allow developers to just downgrade games to work on the older system (just like PC).
So X1 will get the same games until it become less feasible to downgrade games and that's when most have moved on to Scorpio

Xbox 360 had BC in the beginning but abandoned BC halfway through the console lifespan with about a third of Xbox games actually working well on Xbox 360. You can't play the first Xbox 's games on Xbox One.

I don't think the Xbox Scorpio is going to be next gen at all, it going to take every bit of extra horsepower the Xbox Scorpio has to produce 4k graphics natively and I doubt they will be able to do that with all current games as is. I think there will be little difference in how games look between the PS4 Pro and the Xbox Scorpio, the only real difference is PS4 doing 4k with a combination of extra graphics power and proprietary software tricks and Xbox One doing 4k with brute force system power (problem being it takes lot of power to do true 4k) either way, if you can't tell a real difference, which most will not, what difference does it really make.

We will see soon enough, if games don't look measurably better on Xbox One Scorpio over PS4 Pro than I doubt it going to make much difference. Games look really great and are running pretty well on PS4 pro and there are a lot of really good looking and interesting exclusives coming to PS4 in general.

Plus there are some pretty unique development tools coming to PS4 development software that may eliminate any advantage Scorpio could have.

Scorpio is just the first in a trend of new console cycles. Each new console will play all previous consoles titles (from Xbox 360 on) as well as exclusives for the new console. This way, a new console can be released about every 5 years with the previous console before it supported for about 2 years. So, lets say in 20 years I can still play every Xbox title ever made (except OG Xbox titles) on whatever console is current. This is what the whole "Nobody left behind" comment means.

In the end, the PS4 Pro will run most games around 1600 to 1800p, obviously it varies by title. Different titles use different upscaling tech as well. Those same games might run at native 2160p on the Scorpio, maybe with some slight graphical changes too. We'll probably see some more games with 60fps support on the Scorpio as well, but I don't think all that many. And then it'll almost assuredly have a 4K Blu ray player.

It'll be up to the consumer (/4K TV owner haha) whether those differences will be worth the price difference of 50-150 bucks come the holidays (I personally expect that it'll launch at 399, Microsoft has learned from the Xbox One, and that the Pro will drop 50 bucks around then).

For me (personal opinion inbound) Microsoft will have to market hard, becuase the higher resolutions get the harder it is to tell the damn difference (for example, I see the difference from 720p to 1080p MUCH more noticeable than 1440p to 2160p, even though numerically they're identical changes proportionally). The difference in graphical quality to an actual person will probably be quite a bit less than the difference between the Xbox One and PS4. I'd personally choose the Pro for the much more impressive exclusives line-up, but again, an opinion. I personally don't have an interest in 4K Blu ray movies, and I can't discern resolution differences as well as some can. Probably just need to be closer to my TV.

After reading the post, I'm going to start a new trend in 2017. Any developer who bashes any console manufacturer for any reason (excluding something serious) will be boycotted. I get so tired of developers always trash talking other console manufacturers just to get that added bonus, to release games on the competitors console later. Just say "there's certain aspects the Scorpio has the Pro doesn't" and be done with it. Calling the PS4 Pro a half assed upgrade just proves you were either paid to say it, or biased.

I wouldn't worry about it. Most high profile devs dont' go out of their way to bash a console maker. Sad truth is, is that one day, those fan boys you piss off now, may be the one's that help sell your game in the future. On top of that, if you go to far, getting support from the console maker themselves for marketing becomes much harder.

So many people still haven't seen through the fact that the PS4 Pro (and very like the XB1 Scorpio), aren't as powerful as they appear to be. These console have much more GPU than their vanilla counterparts, but the CPU is very much unchanged (ignoring clock speeds). The Scorpio very likely uses a 8 core jaguar CPU, that is upclocked to 2-2.5 ghz, instead of the 1.75 ghz of the original XB1.

The XB1 Scorpio is very much just a mid-gen upgrade. The 360 was over 5 times as powerful as the OG Xbox, vastly superior to its older sibling interms of GPU, ram, and CPU. The Scorpio has better ram and GPU than the base XB1, but the overall power very likely isn't the touted 4 times power increase, just like the PS4 pro isn't really twice as power as the vanilla PS4. Then you have to factor in diminishing returns, which affects hardware and real-world performance more and more as processing power increases.

I think people realize this as the PS4P. Most seem to understand what it is, because Sony was pretty clear on what it was capable of. Of course there is some marketing spin in there, but for the most part, Sony hasn't gone to great lengths to oversell the console, and like most of this gen, are letting the games sell the system....or in this case, by showing the differences to the games.

I really haven't seen anyone say that the PS4P is supposed to be a next gen console, or that it's a beast. Just that it can do more than the PS4, and come to understand what they're getting with the kind of 4K they are offering.

So both MS and Sony create a console based around PC architecture so logically EVERY upgrade can be called "Next generation" in exactly the same way a PC gamer might upgrade the graphics card and CPU of his PC. The result for PC has been backwards compatibility and now consoles will also follow that same path. Regardless of all the fuss and bickering I'm looking forward to seeing what's on offer. It's such an exciting time when new consoles are revealed. It's just a shame if this is followed by disappointment. Fingers crossed for them. This may fill the Xbox hole in my setup as there's still no way I can justify buying the current one. Yes, Phil Spencer confirmed this in an interview during last years E3. He said that every game will work with the Original Xbox One, the Xbox One S and the Scorpio.

I have a xbox 1 S, and I'd like for the Scorpio to play most games on all xbox ones, but I'd still like for them to develop some titles , built from the ground up, to truly take advantage of the hardware. I think you people need to understand that xbox will never need to release a different new console again. Its going to be just like games on windows.When finally they will keep one OS and they can change the look or change whatever and just keep releasing better hardware. This bullshit where you have a console for 5 years and the games dont work on the next one is insane. Ive been playing the same games on pc on like 5 new windows OS systems updated ontop of each other.This is the xbox plan. In fact i heard sony is planning something similar. They finally have a very good OS and its based off Linux so they should for sure do the same thing.Its good for business to continue having your games. Honestly this update in specs is really not even that much different of a job from ps3/360 to ps4/xboxone. It was a small jump yet it was so called next gen consoles. PS4 Pro and this should be recognized as 10th gen consoles anyway. How a new generation is usually defined is new hardware from better chips being released and the competition aspect is another reason for these "updated" machines to and their main competition is PC. With Intel releasing a new chip that's $64 that's replacing a $110 chip on the CPU market and AMD ruling the budget GPU by releasing a GPU that has performance on par with a $200 GPU for only $100, PC gaming is getting cheaper and cheaper and consoles are having a hard time catching up.

I always said. Xbox Scorpio is next generation console not a part of Xbox One family. PS4 Pro is PS4 family because using same amount GDDR5 memory with higher speed, using same CPU cores with overclock and same Bluray Drive. Only GPU upgraded, console not designed new technology Chip's!

But Scorpio CPU, GPU, Memory everything design new technologies. Not anymore EsRam over there, not AMD Jaguar CPU cores, not Pitcairn AMD GPU every single chip new technologies.

And Scorpio not giving only 2.3x boost for overall performance difference like PS4 to PS4 Pro. It's gives more then 4.5x overall performance difference between orjinal Xbox One. Scorpio not a mid gen upgrade like PS4 Pro. It's totally Next Generation!

For Xbox it is. And it is what we wanted when we considered next gen but weren't willing to pay 3 yrs ago. I thinks with the advent of 4 k and VR though, it worked out well. Instead of paying $700, we pay twice over 6 yrs.

But Xbox may have considered going next gen and putting real pressure on Sony and Nintendo. They have BC so they could have also compensated current owners in some way. Siftware could have mirrored this gen, offering games on both systems for awhile, but creating new software for Scorpio.

Sony would have to make a move, and Nintendo would be in real trouble!

Huh. Well, if it gets new games the OG Xbox One models can't play, then yes it's a new generation.

If it gets games the OG models can play, it's an upgrade (even if it's a really powerful one).

Either way, it's a new console and I'm excited. I wouldn't say PS4 Pro was half*** though. I mean, it was a decent little upgrade. Idk. I'm not into all these console wars. I like the PS4 Pro- got my PSVR and Vita, but also have a Wii U and 3DS and 2 Switches preordered, and an Xbox One and Gaming PC. And will definitely be getting Scorpio day one.

While other people play one single console and mock all the rest, pretending they're getting all the best games and none of the other consoles are "worth buying", I'm playing all the consoles and ACTUALLY AM getting all the best games.

No chance after the leaked White paper at digital foundry, remember they had the pro spec months before and it was 100% Scorpio shows a similar technique to checkerboard rendering, I thought it as a true 4K machine, the chip has been downgraded too. Now if I was a MS fan I would be furious, I understand marketing speak but come on digital foundry said the console can not be the beast MS said it is.
