Forget Hardcore and Casual, Nintendo Switch is for the Lapsed Gamer

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "Switch isn't aimed at the hardcore gamer, often characterized as a basement dweller whose only non-gaming priority is a steady supply of Mountain Dew. Neither is Switch aimed at the casual gamer, seen as a nursing home resident or soccer mom with a severely impaired frontal lobe. Switch, like every other video game system on the planet, is aimed at both groups, which are far more amorphous and unpredictable than forum-goers and incendiary columnists might suggest. Importantly, it's also aimed at what could be described as lapsed gamers."

I don't really agree.

Hardcore gamer for me is someone who wants to play great games on any system, which gamer wouldn't want to play games on a Switch, I can't wait to have a go, I haven't been this excited about a console since the original PlayStation.

wonderfulmonkeyman3063d ago

Pretty much this. Though I'd argue that, with games like Skylanders on the Switch, it will also draw in some casuals, but on the whole most of its games seem to be aimed at core gamers.

SR3883062d ago

Same here hardcore to me is always playing games and loving them no matter what :)........ To most I thought hardcore was "gamers" such as kids to teens who need graphix, violence, shooting and graphix lol

Uken123062d ago

Hit the nail on the head. hardcore gamers are people who play games. Doesn't matter the system. I've owned all big 3 every gen because they all have good offerings. (Except when I got dusted buying an Xbox1 for Master Chief Collection aka the most broken game ever that was pretty much pointless to have).

* I play games on PC,Wii U,XB1,PS4,Vita,3DS,PSP & soon to be Switch.

Not sure what class that puts me in but I love games and play the ones that interest me.

It just so happens that a ton of games on multiple consoles/handelds & PC interest me.

Not sure how anybody can call themselves a "hardcore" gamer when you play like 3-4 games ever.

mechlord3062d ago

like every other balanced gamer on earth, ill wait for games i want to be exclusively available there, mostly rpgs. If not, ill pass. got plenty on my plate as it is.

I know. Personally I think Japanese Developers might make a bit of a comeback given the appeal in Japan. PS4 basically sold the same as Wii U in Japan. So they may have more reason to develop on Switch. Hopefully.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild (Switch 2)- The Best Way To Play, But Zelda Notes Sucks| NL

"

Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is undoubtedly the best way to play one of the greatest games of all time. The visual and performance enhancements remove any issues that you may have had to endure with the original game. It's practically flawless from that perspective.

Sadly, the Zelda Notes app really brings the whole thing down. Useful features that should have been implemented in-game have been relegated to your smartphone, and using it completely breaks immersion in this incredible world. I'm only thankful that it's not even remotely mandatory. Leave Zelda Notes to one side, and you've got the definitive presentation of a modern classic." - Ollie Reynolds | NintendoLife

nice improvement to the clarity. Really makes everything look less blurry, especially in the distance.

really hope we see more free improvements like this on Switch 1 games.

Jin_Sakai9d ago

First game I played on Switch 2. Much sharper and cleaner image compared to the original.

Cacabunga8d ago

I won’t be able to notice difference unless both versions are side by side

Snookies129d ago

A lot of games that have no official Switch 2 update already run WAY better just from the hardware itself. It's fantastic getting to play all these games in a much better state. So glad I hardly played any of my Switch collection over the years, lol. This will make experiencing them for the first time so much better.

Levii_929d ago

A nice resolution upgrade to one of my fav games but i’m still not buying the Switch “2”

darthv729d ago (Edited 9d ago )

This and Mario/Bowser are ones I will pop in later. I hope other devs offer some patches, like xenon racer on SW1 is 30fps and it really is better at 60.

Goodguy019d ago (Edited 9d ago )

Great it was 60 frames on switch 1 though. Definitely sacrificed resolution however.

Neonridr9d ago

I mean it targeted 60 on the Switch 1, but it wasn't always solid.

GhostScholar9d ago

I’ll never know why fans let Nintendo get away with not competing graphically and never putting their games on sale.

Chard8d ago

Unfortunately the games are fun. They’ve got us by the balls

GhostScholar8d ago

I’m a fan of their exclusives as well but if the hardware had the same capabilities as the x and ps5 and I could have all the third party stuff plus the Nintendo exclusives it would be my main console

Neonridr8d ago

@GhostScholar - if the Switch 2 had the same capabilities as the X and PS5 it would cost over $1000 and the battery would last for 5 minutes.
