Reggie: Switch Caters to ‘Different Market’ Than 3DS; Didn’t Push 3rd Party Support Enough at Reveal

The Nintendo Switch caters to a "different marketplace" than the 3DS, Nintendo executive Reggie Fils-Aimé has stated, who claims the existing handheld has a "robust" and "vibrant" future ahead of it.

So they learnt nothing from the humiliating wiiu performance, that it's due to lack of 3rd party support

Summons753081d ago

He said at the reveal...not overall. Or did we all forget E3 is still around the corner.

bouzebbal3081d ago

then they could change their policy by only showing 3rd party at the reveal and 1st party at e3. At least it will show a determination for doing better than before.
This is not good. They have damaged the brand much more than they try to fix things

ninsigma3081d ago

E3 happens after the switch releases. The conference last week was their best time to convince people.

_-EDMIX-_3081d ago

? Why would Electronic Arts Activision Ubisoft and numerous third parties withhold information about their own games? That has nothing to do with Nintendo.

Nintendo has zero authority over what third parties announce.

When PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were revealed he got a pretty respectable list of titles that would be coming to those platforms with Assassin's Creeds Call of Duty's even new IPs like Destiny.

Companies didn't just go out of their way to hide what they are making simply because they still have to compete with other publishers.

I'm sorry but it wasn't a secret that a bunch of Publishers were making PlayStation 4 and Xbox One games on those platforms were revealed.

All that this is showing is that such support doesn't exist.

Okay so Electronic Arts, Activision and Ubisoft have the division Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed as well as Call of Duty Destiny as well as Mass Effect Battlefront in Battlefield all just ready to be announced but decided at the biggest stage to announce it before the switch is released wasn't the right time to announce titles?

Ooooooh OK bud.

But you're still waiting for Resident Evil 2002 remaster as well as Resident Evil 0 remaster as well as Resident Evil Revelations 2 as well as Resident Evil 7 for the Wii U right?

So wait till E3? Lol you sure?

So you're telling me it's going to seriously take you years to realize that they have nothing planned for this platform?

deafdani3081d ago (Edited 3081d ago )

If they did it the other way around, people right now would be shitting on them anyway claiming they're not making games for Switch.

Anyway, I don't think the Switch will get any relevant western third party support. All it will get is Indies, and Japanese support (which has been already shown at the Switch event), besides Nintendo's own support, which is starting strong.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3081d ago

You still don't get it.
Reggie is talking about the montage they had. He saying they should had shown each titles that were in the montage instead of putting them all together.

PhoenixUp3081d ago

Why not push 3rd party support at the reveal? What benefit could Nintendo possibly have for not becoming that aggressive

_-EDMIX-_3081d ago

Trust me , it's because it doesn't exist.

wonderfulmonkeyman3081d ago

Too soon to say that, negative nancy.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3081d ago

Uh that what he talking about. The montage that had Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, I am Setsuna, Disgaea 5 Complete and all the other titles. He saying they should had shown them instead of a montage.

Nintendo is a bunch of fucking morons!! That's been the case for the past 15 yrs give er take, why do ppl not understand this?!?!? How many times are Nintendo gonna fuck up and make moronic decisions over and over and over and over and over and over and over again?

_-EDMIX-_3081d ago

How could they push support that doesn't exist? That really isn't up to them, if a publisher decides they're not going to support this platform that's pretty much their choice and out of Nintendo's hands.

Nintendo had so many chances to get support by openly communicating and clearly they chose to go their own route so they basically sealed their own fate with their own incompetence.

The fact that there's 80 Nintendo switch games in development is pretty damn question about considering when the PlayStation 4 first was announced Sony announced that they had well over 1,000 teams working on PlayStation 4 games.

Clearly they're up to their old tricks.

This is just one of those situations where you reap what you sow.

wonderfulmonkeyman3081d ago

Neither you nor your relatives work at Nintendo, and you therefore have no more of a clue than anyone else does as to what's being planned by third parties for the Switch.

_-EDMIX-_3080d ago

That's not really answering the question of why would third parties hide their own releases despite the platform releasing in less than 2 months?

So what would it hurt Nintendo to tell consumers that well over a thousand developers are working on it like PlayStation 4? What would it benefit developers by hiding the existence of their games?

I'm sorry but I don't see any logic behind this it just doesn't make sense from anyone's perspective to hide such information and all that tells me is that it simply doesn't exist.

Trust me Activision was not looking to hide the existence of Destiny, Ubisoft was not looking to hide the division or Watch Dogs those companies were desperate to show off those properties because clearly they must compete on a new platform for dominance.

.... that's if the new platform even looks like it's going to be successful in the lack of open competition by Third parties tells me they've all but given up on competing on the platform.

For Electronic Arts did not announce all their major titles coming to the switch is basically saying Activision has all free rein to do so but it tells me that neither publisher care about the platform because I'm 100% doubtful that on the reveal of PlayStation 5 or the next Xbox both those Publishers would just sit back and remain silent and let the other publisher take all the free marketing.

I'm sorry but that would just never happen.

You have to read in between the lines on this one and realize that Electronic Arts simply showing FIFA is an extremely bad thing.

I'm sorry but you wouldn't never see something like that out of PlayStation 5 or Xbox reveal.

Glad, I’m about to downgrade when they raise the price. For me, I don’t really access much or care about the games they have in the library and if I do, it’d be cheaper to just buy them over time rather than stick to some expensive subscription model.

crazyCoconuts1d 23h ago

When you're new to the service you've got an avalanche of games to play. After you catch up, I agree, it's not worth it beyond the Essential tier for me.
That being said, the Essential tier is the best deal in console gaming imo, based on the monthly games you get to keep.

Profchaos1d 17h ago

Yeah same will be downgrading $214 aud is insane and we don't even get the streaming capabilities in Australia which they said would make the top level subscription cheaper.

If i was to just buy the games I actually play that come to the service id be far better off.

Ill keep the essential tier to retain the games ive collected since the ps3 and for mp but I'm not convinced of the premium tiers value any more

victorMaje1d 14h ago

Went back to essential a few months ago. I’m buying more physical and it has helped in finishing more games.

Profchaos1d 4h ago

Tend to agree if i go to the trouble of buying a disc ill typically finish it

Alos882d ago

Extra is probably the best value for money right now, Premium doesn't have anything special enough to justify paying the additional imo.

OtterX1d 23h ago

*unless you have a Portal & you catch Premium on discount during Days of Play or Black Friday.

Yea, I really do wish they'd up their effort on Premium titles, but allowing a large catalog of titles that can stream to your Portal without even having to use your PS5 is pretty awesome. We travel about 2 hours to stay with my inlaws from time to time, so it's been pretty killer to only need to take my Portal for that!

andy851d 22h ago

Yup if you have a portal premium is the best tier for sure

KyRo1d 6h ago

Extra has been getting worse and worse each month. I've had it since it's launch and it's been great to play some games I may not have played but the selection has been declining rapidly for a while now. My sub runs out in August and I'll be going back to essential. They actually add games to that which are more appealing.

jznrpg1d 23h ago

Add some more classics with trophies. Vagrant Story first

OtterX1d 23h ago

Nice choice. I agree!

Jeanne D'Arc was my favorite PS+ catalog title from last year & I Platinumed it!

Eonjay1d 21h ago

I like Ridge Racer, Tekken and Grandia. Add Xenogears, digimon World 3, Classic GTA and ill be happy

jznrpg1d 19h ago

Jeanne D’Arc was great!

@Eonjay there is a Grandia collection available for PS4, I’m not sure if it’s been on plus already or not

darthv721d 23h ago

cloud streaming to the portal, without using the ps5, is the selling point of premium to me.

Obscure_Observer1d 23h ago

If the consumers are happy, Sony is even happier.

It is what it is.

Eonjay1d 21h ago

I tend to agree with you.

True, they have pretty different audiences..and some People just have both at home or a PS and a PC that emulates more or less everything from Nintendo.

Knightofelemia8d ago

Xbox hasn't been a competitor since the XB360. Last generation and this generation Sony has been running circles around Xbox. As for Sony vs Nintendo Sony runs circles yes but I don't really see Nintendo as competition. Nintendo does their own thing and it works.

Lightning777d ago

Details are important. Console sales yes. Overall games Xbox seems to be doing fairly well in that department.

LoveSpuds7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

MS were doing so well that they had to start selling their games on their main competitors system which in turn results in around 30% of each sale going to Sony as the platform holder.

I do think tjat MS' fortunes will improve now that they are actually selling games rather than giving them away for pennies on the dollar.

Something that occurs to me is that the more success MS published games have elsewhere, the more stark it will become that selling games is much more profitable than renting them. If that becomes highly noticable, I wonder what the shareholders (who ultimately run the show) will make of a service which has stagnated for years?

crazyCoconuts7d ago

PlayStation doesn't compete with third party games, they compete on consoles. They profit from third party games. If you're not comparing consoles there's no point in comparing.

drivxr7d ago

Console wars are over.

Eventually, everyone else will catch up to this fact.

attilayavuzer7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

I think it's all PS fans have left at this point. Console wars were always a competition for fourth place behind Nintendo, PC and mobile. If Xbox evaporates into a hybrid virtual platform, then PS will be perennially left in last place.

Christopher7d ago

Strange, I recall all those FCC documents and witness testimonies saying the exact opposite... Guess Microsoft doesn't know what it's talking about?

PanicMechanic7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Great analysis. Just joking.

Pretending like companies give a f about where they “rank” against each other is just super retarded. This isn’t the World Cup.

Tell me, how does “PC” compete against a brand like PlayStation? It just doesn’t make sense at all. What you just said, is complete and utter nonsense

BlaqMagiq17d ago

I don't think PS cares about being in this so-called "last place" you came up with when they're making profits hand over fist.

microsoft wanted to crush sony into dust and they had the money to do it, but with such weak leadership it was always going to fail

Reaper22_7d ago

Had the money? They still have the money but the industry has changed since xbox 360. Microsoft is the number one publisher in gaming. I'd hardly call that failing.

IRetrouk7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

The industry hasn't changed though, just ms, Microsoft was the no1 publisher for a month in december 2024, the actual no1 for fy2024 was tencent if game sales are all that's being counted.

Profchaos7d ago

Money doesn't mean you'll be successful large corporations have entered and failed before like Nec
