Nintendo Switch- This Switch Aint Turning Me On

"I have been waiting for years for Nintendo to return to their former glory and honestly thought that the Switch would be the console to turn their fortunes around. Unfortunately it seems that Nintendo still have a lot to learn to compete in today’s market."

James Hobbs from Gameondaily shares his thoughts on the Nintendo Switch and why is he left disappointed

Well I've just preordered it. I have a Wii U so could play Zelda on it but I wanna play it mobile.

But the prices of those controllers and peripherals...what a farce!!

And that online system better be great. Luckily we get to test it out for free but if it's anything like what it is now, FORGET paying for that crap.

Moonman2807d ago

On Treehouse, the console looks comfortable and well designed. It's a nice looking console. Hopefully more game reveals and information will come from now E3.

Gazondaily2807d ago

Yeah man. Nintendo can't afford to treat this like the Wii U. They need to go ham on the games.

I reckon they will as well. Third party support will probably suck though.

Why o why2807d ago

Just give me some Mario Kart, Zelda and a bomberman and I'll be good. . Didn't get to watch the conference as it was at 4am UK time. I'll have to sift through the videos to see what's up but from the general slimming only Nintendo fans are happy. . .

Erik73572807d ago

I really don't get the hate bandwagon thing going on n4g on this.

It looks like it's first year will be better than ps4's first year was.

maybelovehate2807d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

They are saying you will get 3 hours of Zelda gameplay mobile. Which probably means closer to 2 hours. I am waiting for reviews, as badly as I want Zelda. Plus a 720 screen at that close of distance is just unacceptable. Not competitive with where the current mobile market is.

Edit: charging while you play isn't really mobile. Unless you plan to carry a portable battery in your backpack everywhere you go.

Gazondaily2807d ago

You can charge as you play which is cool with me.

I charge my phone and watch movies in a similar fashion.

Kokyu2807d ago

Agreed if I wanted to charge while I play then why buy it at all.

Gazondaily2807d ago

I mean I just wanna lay in bed and play it. Odd to explain but having a screen further and kinda laying up doesn't suit me.

But yeah, when I go to work etc, that battery life is toss although I won't be playing for 1 hour plus (can charge in between).

A lot of the success of this depends on how well it works remotely too tbh. And whether I wont get hand cramps holding the thing .

But playing SF2 with my mate at work with this would be great

Utalkin2me2807d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

@Septic

If you have to charge and play, then that makes it less appealing for being portable. Then on top of that carry carts and sd cards around with you and cables and charger packs. Just doesn't make portable sense to me. And i feel its something that Nintendo heavily missed on.

Gazondaily2807d ago

Yeah gotta agree that the battery life is pretty terrible. 2 hours is crap. And of they say 2 hours then expect it to be even less.

Charging it all the time will be a chore tbh now that I think of it.

The charge time is based on it being used mobile right? The controller itself when it's docked won't be that bad I imagine? I don't recall info on that.

Kokyu2807d ago

So you're dropping 300$ just to play Zelda......wow

maybelovehate2807d ago

It would actually be 360.. 430 if you want a real controller.

Gazondaily2807d ago

Not just Zelda though but that's a big driver for me. My mates and I are excited for it plus I have a mate currently playing it and he says it's great.

I can see why people are dismissive (like my mate who wrote this article ). I'm taking a punt on it. An expensive one and perhaps risky knowing Nintendos series of failures.

King_Lothric2806d ago

Let's make the sum
Switch: 300
Zelda game: 60
Pro controller: 60
Taxes

Almost $500 just to play Zelda at 900p

Wow

christocolus2807d ago

I'm definitely getting one but not at launch. That controller is pricey but that Zelda looks amazing. According to new info the game runs 1080p/60fps docked and 900p/60fps undocked. I need that game.

Gazondaily2807d ago

Yeah I'm not bothered about the resolution to be fair. This is more a mobile console hybrid and I just wanna come home, jump in bed and play Zelda.

Or play Zelda at work secretly....

The mobile element is great for me

Utalkin2me2807d ago

Its more of a home console with a little portability. I mean, again terrible battery life, no storage space, need a bag to carry extra items such as carts, sd cards, cables and such. Two main things Nintendo should have focused on was battery life and storage.

yeahokwhatever2807d ago

lol @ 900p undocked. Its got a 720p screen.. Zelda looked really bad for something not out yet. It looks like its straight outa 2006.

rjason122807d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

Yeah right dude, I think you need lasik.

@cock

Dude you're garbage, that's why you're trolling in Switch articles, can't even find video games to kill time.

EddieNX 2807d ago

Youre just hating cus its cartoons style. Deal with it, it looks beautiful. A full open world Zelda and people still complain.

Kokyu2807d ago

Yep looked a lot like shadow of Colossess a Ps2 game. Zelda isnt running 900p undocked its running 720p undocked and 900p docked thats garbage.

bamillington2807d ago

i like the look of it but gonna hang on for black friday or cyber monday

CrimsonWing692807d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

Where are the fanatics and fanboys to defend the Switch, now?

I called this after the very first reveal of this console. When I saw that it's running on a Tegra X1 SoC I was told I knew nothing about what I was talking about. The console would be more superior than an Xbone.

http://arstechnica.com/gami...

I said games wouldn't be simply ported to the Switch due to the architecture difference, I was told I know nothing about what I'm talking about. Well look at Skyrim not being the remastered version... It's a Switch specific version.

I said the battery power for mobility will probably be similar to the Wii U gamepad... well you're looking at 2-6 hours of battery life depending on the game. What they really mean is indie or VC games will run about 6 hours while AAA titles will probably go 2 - 3 hours. Hope it's a short flight.

I said Nintendo needs multiplatform games to compete with the libraries of its competitors as well as its exclusives. It's using the same third party support we've seen on the Wii U at launch. It's always strong at first but once sales don't bring a return on investment from these devs guess what, Wii U all over again.

So where are these mentally challenged fanboys now? Defend this console with your bull sh*t like usual. Be Nintendo enablers instead of trying to make them change their business structure that hasn't been working for them except for the lightning in a bottle Wii.

rjason122807d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

Right here you no-life pos. I hope this thing sells like hot cakes, just so people can rub your nose in it.

Go right ahead, I betcha it makes you feel sooooo good! Must be a ton of fun to write out an essay worth of shit of something you don't like.

CrimsonWing692807d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

I'll just get this out of the way now, "Told ya' so"

Also yes, yes it does feel sooooooo good and sure is a ton of fun to write out an essay that upsets you kool-aid drinking Nintendo enabling fanboys. You all defended this console blindly after so many said otherwise and now that you're wrong all you can say is "I hope this thing sells".

Real talk for a sec, oh it will sell from blind brand loyalists. It'll be great fora year or two... until every fanboy bought it then the sales will plateau hard. This was Nintendo's chance, I was hoping they'd make me eat my words... but no, Nintendo doing what Nintendo does best and dropping the ball.

Angeljuice2807d ago

@rjason12

Everyone who predicted it would be underpowered and overpriced with serious issues was told that they knew nothing and to "wait and see".

We waited, we saw, we were proven to be bang on with our predictions. Now we're being told to go away and keep our opinions to ourselves.

It doesn't work that way.

Kokyu2807d ago

Fanboys are fanboys they dont get it. If the Switch flops Nintendo ia in serious Sega like trouble.......they need new leadership and fresh ideas.

rjason122807d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

Fanboys, fanboys, fanboys. Man I swear, you guys are broken records, saying the same shit day in and day out.

They won't be in Sega like trouble in the foreseeable future and they have a new president if you didn't notice. And fresh ideas? Ya mean like how they always make new and different games?

@Kokyu
I am a "fanboy" so fucking what, I really don't care, it's just a baseless accusation from someone who probably thinks their a "hardcore gamer". Their stock constantly goes up and down, it didn't even hit the July 16 low. Wii wasn't a fluke, they knew what they were doing, only reason it was a "fluke" Is because you didn't like it. Still sold more than whatever your favorite system did.

And finally, we'd still see a Switch no matter what, I've heard this bs doom and gloom shit for over 15 years now, they've been around long before any of us were born and will continue to be around long after we're all gone. Though I will say that if the Switch doesn't do well, kimishima may oversee an entirely different approach to their consoles, as the Switch has Iwata written all over it.

Kokyu2807d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

@rjasonq12

You really have no idea what your talking about because you're a fanboy. Its ok its hard for fanboys to know they are fanboys but let me educate you. The "new president" has been part of Nintendo leadership for years its uncommon for Nintendo or any Japanese company really to hire from outside the company, Japanese companies prefer to promote from within, so the "new president" isnt new he is the just like all the Nintendo hite ups he is old hat.

Thats the first point the second point is yes a third flop will sink Nintendo as their capitol is tied, listen closely, to their stock which took a big hit after this presentation so 3 flops and your out. If the damn Wii hadnt been a fluke success we wouldnt even be seeing a damn Switch. Learn something next time before you open your mouth, it will make you look more intelligent.

Ye, Custom Robo Arena was a lot better than Pokemon anyways, now that's a game.

Eonjay1d 22h ago

Interestingly this comes like a day after they announced they would be at the Tokyo Games Show.

Vits1d 21h ago

We should all really hope so. Otherwise, this could lead to many issues, as they hold patents on numerous game mechanics. And when I say numerous, I truly mean it. Take this one, for example:

"Abstract: In an example of a game program, a ground boarding target object or an air boarding target object is selected by a selection operation, and a player character is caused to board the selected boarding target object. If the player character aboard the air boarding target object moves toward the ground, the player character is automatically changed to the state where the player character is aboard the ground boarding target object, and brought into the state where the player character can move on the ground."

In plain English, do you guys remember that super amazing mechanic where you surf on the water with a Pokémon, and then when you hit land, it changes to you walking? Yeah, they patented that.

1d 4h ago
porkChop2d ago

A patent lawsuit? What Pokémon-related patent could Palworld even be infringing that other similar games haven't? This makes no sense. Feels like Nintendo just trying to throw its weight around to bully competitors, just like they do with emulators even though they're legal.

Kaii2d ago

They can't Innovate their own IP, but when others are breaking the ceiling, they run to the courts, gtfo Nintendo/Gamefreak.

Companies' gatekeeping mechanics behind the patent system to stifle innovation, consumers will always pick the better product, it's not the consumer's fault that Gamefreak has sat on their lazy assess for years.

Kornholic2d ago

"Consumers will always pick the better product"

Since when?

swedishMeatwad1d 12h ago

You can't argue with _subjective_ taste. Some people are going to like games you find crappy. I'm happy not everyone has the same taste.

Kornholic1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

@swedishMeatwad

PS5 Pro is obviously objectively the better product when compared to the base PS5, but the majority of consumers interested in a PS5 will not be picking Pro over base PS5.

There are countless examples like this out there.

The_Blue1d 19h ago

Rather you like it or not COD has many accessible options and customization that allows for better experience than most other FPS.

Knightofelemia2d ago

The Palworld has been out since January of 2024 and now Nintendo finally decides to do something. I fail to see how Palworld is like Pokemon besides evolving monsters. There are other games out there as well where you can capture and level up monsters. Tales of Symphonia 2 does that capture monsters and have them fight with you and they evolve when levelling up. The two games might share some similarities but what game doesn't borrow from another game. I could understand if Palworld was just a straight on copy clone of Pokemon but it's not. Nintendo is starting to become a pain in the ass. Going full gung ho with rom sites that I can see, purposely taking down pictures from a strategy guide for Mario 64 the strategy guide never came to North America and Nintendo had the pictures taken down. Where does it every stop with Nintendo?

babadivad1d 22h ago

Monsters don't evolve in Palworld

Software_Lover1d 18h ago

It's because Palworld became a worldwide viral success. Nintendo can't fathom someone else being that popular when it comes to a small monster catching game.

VersusDMC1d 18h ago

Nintendo is only acting now because they just finished a lawsuit which they won.

https://www.nintendolife.co...

Atlus should get on this and sue Nintendo as SMT came out before Pokemon. If Nintendo is going to play this game.

isarai2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

This feels like a scare tactic more than anything else. There's nothing here dozens of other games haven't already done, they're just mad this game showed people how much the pokemon series has been slackin and are desperately trying to make an example out of them.

How's about instead of spending all that money on court fees and lawyers you invest it into making pokémon better?

Profchaos1d 23h ago

I think if it was a scare tactic it would have happened when the game came out I have a feeling they've been building a case for a while

isarai1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

It did happen even before the game came out, they tried several tomes before and nothing came of it

Profchaos1d 22h ago

I was pretty sure the only statement they made was they would investigate

The 'Steam Deck 2' seems a lot more promising with Ryzen Z2 chips announced

The 'Steam Deck 2.0' needs to make use of the AMD Ryzen Z2 chips if it wants a fighting chance against the competition.

I think when the next wave of these handhelds release I'll see what's available and finally grab one. The handheld aspect is nice, but I really just need something small to take with me when traveling. Been using my Series S, which has been good, but it would be nice having my PC library on the go.

Yui_Suzumiya2d ago

Steam Deck OLED is the best gaming device I've owned in 35 years. Give it a chance and you might be quite happy.

Tapani2d ago

I appreciate it is a great device, but simply not enough to run the games I play. I’m also going to wait for a Z2E or Z3E OLED version of Steam Deck before jumping in.

I want to run games at medium/optimized settings at 60fps for 3hrs+, and we are not there yet.

redrum062d ago

Tbh, I mostly play on my Steam Deck OLED since I got it, leaving my Series X in the dust. There's something really enjoyable about handheld gaming, and the speakers and screen are amazing on this device, despite it being 800p.

1d 16h ago
RiseNShine2d ago

I have the Rogue Ally and miss the Steam Deck, i love the extra power of the Ally but i am sooo tired of a million issues with windows and games, i miss the simplicity of SD, you launch a game and it works as long as it's supported, period, Valve really turned PC gaming in a console experience, so SD 2 is day one for me.

redrum062d ago

Had the Steam Deck OLED, sold it for a Legion Go, then sold the Legion Go to get a Steam Deck OLED again. SteamOS is so much better than Windows.

1d 16h ago
UltimateOwnage2d ago

Deck doesn't need a "fighting chance". Specs have never won in the grant scheme of things. Value has, and the Deck has significant value and usability advantages over its so called "superior" competitors. Ask Nintendo how being in 1st place in sales in the next gen race with last gen handheld hardware works.

redrum062d ago

Nintendo has good exclusive first party titles to compete with the rest, so that's not quite a fair comparison

__SteakDeck__1d 20h ago

@redrum06 But Valve has their own killer app, and that’s Steam.

Vits1d 16h ago

Ask Nintendo how much that helped them with the Gamecube and the Wii U. Exclusives alone aren't really anything, they are just one factor in what makes a devie provide value.

1d 16h ago
Kosic2d ago

The steam deck has been my go to device since I got it.
I've tried an Ally and LeGo, both are decent handhelds, but I prefer the design of the deck with steam OS and window boot.

If they release a Deck 2 with a big enough upgrade. I'd definitely get one of those.

1d 16h ago
kryteris1d 19h ago

it would be rad if they used the same board layout and cooling allowing previous owners to upgrade.

No ‘The Sims 5’ Coming as EA Sets Multiplayer Expansion to Current Game

Electronic Arts‘ popular free-to-play life-simulation video game franchise “The Sims” is breaking from tradition, with the gaming company confirming Tuesday that there are no plans for a “The Sims 5” game as the successor to the current edition, “The Sims 4.”

Instead, “The Sims 4,” now a 10-year-old title and the longest-running installment in the franchise’s 25-year history, will continue to receive updates and paid expansions, most notably a multiplayer mode and partnering with some “Sims” players who develop their own custom content for the game to sell it through the EA store as “Creator Kits.”

Inzoi will be better anyways. Sims 4 is garbage.
