“Tracer is gay! Take that gamers!” - Most Gamers don´t have a problem with Tracer being a lesbian

Just recently Blizzard released a Christmas inspired "Overwatch" comic called "Tracer Reflections", and in that comic, it became clear that Tracer is a lesbian. Well, that shouldn´t be a big deal right? True, but sadly enough some people started to state that Gamers are homophobic and that they hate Tracer now. So this is my (Robin Ek, TGG) take on the matter.

It's ridiculous to make a big deal and get in an uproar about this. A character is gay, whoopdy frigging doo, it literally changes nothing for anyone. She's not going to play any differently in game now 😂

And of course the SJWs are out parading as if this is some sort of victory. I would imagine very few are mad about this, some will be happy and most won't care. It's ok though, we'll carry on with our lives while they fall behind in irrelevancy with their lies 🙂

Exactly, it doesn´t change anything of me either. Tracer will be Tracer. It´s like when people whined about Dumbledore (Harry Potter) being gay (the movies). So what? I don´t care what sexuality real or fictional characters have. As it´s all about presenting the character (s) in question as good as possible (their story and so on).

I absolutely love the Harry Potter world, I grew up with the books but now it just seems she says things that fly in the face of her own books just to pander to different groups. Not sure if the dumbledore thing applies to that, I think it could be hinted at in the books, I can't remember. Anyway off topic rant there, sorry. Totally agreed on characters story and how it's presented. That's the most important thing by far.

Who cares if she is gay or not? Besides, the acknowledgement that she is, is diminished by the fact that she's part of a large ensemble of characters, when we get a lead character in a big franchise then we will see what people think.

- I have sadly enough not had the pleasure to read the books (at least not yet), because I´ve been busy reading the Discworld books ;) I get your point though. So I hope that she doesn't toss in characters like that just to get some PC points. I should point out that Terry Pratchett has created both homosexual and transsexual characters throughout his Discworld series. Pratchett never made a lot of fuss about it though, and I think his first LGBT character showed up +20 years ago.

It's not that she tosses in characters for pc points it's more what she says afterwards. There's the new harry potter play that she wrote and one of main roles was given to a black woman. I am quick to say that a black woman casting isn't the problem, it's that when people complained that it went against the character from the book, Rowlings response was that she never described the characters color. However in one of the books she describes her as going pale due to fear and in her early drawings of the characters, the actual black character was shaded in to depict that while the character in question wasn't. So for me that was just annoying because I'm all about continuity. However, with that said, I'm still gonna go and see the play next month because I'm not going to let something like that get in the way of enjoying Harry Potter 😀

Going pale is the color shift of your skin when it moves blood away from the outer layers from things like overwhelming fear, being nauseous, or losing body tempurature. Its just associated with white. But works with mostcolors. Eg bale blue paint job on a car

Actually, there are quite a lot of people having a meltdown over Tracer being gay. The official Blizzard Overwatch forum is ground zero. I've seen people say "Uninstalling" after hearing the news. It's pretty funny, but just like those celebrating, they are the minority. The rest of us don't really care.

Wonder what people would be more pissed over. Her being gay, or making her decide to go a more traditional relationship route. My money would be on her marrying a man would piss off all these people happy about this current state, because a fictional characters right to decide to do her own thing(as silly as that sounds) is not acceptable if she happens to be gay.

Would be an interesting social experiment to say the least, and since Blizzard has already trolled the community with Tracer once with that victory pose thing, I think it'd be fitting.

Maybe if Overwatch actually had an over-arching narrative or some sort of progressing plot, then a character being gay might both have plot significance and (although I don't usually like this sort of writing) progressive significance. But as it stands, Overwatch doesn't have that, so a character being gay has no point and shouldn't be that much of a deal. It's like giving sexuality to the characters in Gigantic. It's a MOBA where creatures fight each other, who cares?

If you read between the lines regarding the whole issue with a gay character, those complaining/whining are giving the game publicity. Now the kids who need some sort of "alone time material" have an avenue for their 10-15 minutes. I wouldn't be surprised if the game sales go up because of this.
